The development of carbon-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts to substitute the expensive and unstable platinum-based ORR catalysts is of great importance for their optimal utilization in energy conversion and storage. Herein, we report the production of highly active carbon-based ORR catalyst from well-designed core–shell type hybrid metal–organic framework (MOF). Cobalt- and nitrogen-codoped porous carbon leaves (Co,N-PCLs) are prepared via a simple one-step pyrolysis of well-designed leaf-shaped core-shell type hybrid MOFs (ZIF-L@ZIF-67, ZIF (zeolitic imidazolate framework) is a subclass of MOF), which contain two different metal ions (Zn2+ in core and Co2+ in shell) and sufficient nitrogen source with a thin flat morphology. The structural and compositional features of resulting Co,N-PCLs are characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and N2 sorption isotherms, and the analyses reveal that they possess the ideal structural and compositional features for ORR, such as numerous carbon nanotubes (CNTs), substantial Co- and N-doping, large surface area, and high pore volume while maintaining the advantageous thin leaf-shape. Owing to such unique structural and compositional features, Co,N-PCLs display much better ORR activity than their counterparts prepared from the parent materials (ZIF-L or ZIF-67). In addition, Co,N-PCL even shows a better electrochemical stability and a better methanol tolerance compared to commercial Pt/C material.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease due to the current epidemics of obesity and diabetes. The pregnane X receptor (PXR) is a xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptor known for trans-activating liver genes involved in drug metabolism and transport, and more recently implicated in energy metabolism. The gut microbiota can modulate the host xenobiotic biotransformation and contribute to the development of obesity. While the male sex confers a higher risk for NAFLD than women before menopause, the mechanism remains unknown. We hypothesized that the presence of PXR promotes obesity by modifying the gut-liver axis in a sex-specific manner. Male and female C57BL/6 (wild-type/WT) and PXR-knockout (PXR-KO) mice were fed control or high fat diet (HFD) for 16-weeks. Serum parameters, liver histopathology, transcriptomic profiling, 16S-rDNA sequencing, and bile acid (BA) metabolomics were performed. PXR enhanced HFD-induced weight gain, hepatic steatosis and inflammation especially in males, accompanied by PXR-dependent up-regulation in hepatic genes involved in microbial response, inflammation, oxidative stress, and cancer; PXR-dependent increase in intestinal Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio (hallmark of obesity) and the pro-inflammatory Lactobacillus, as well as a decrease in the anti-obese Allobaculum and the anti-inflammatory Bifidobacterum, with a PXR-dependent reduction of beneficial BAs in liver. The resistance to NAFLD in females may be explained by PXR-dependent decrease in pro-inflammatory bacteria (Ruminococcus gnavus and Peptococcaceae). In conclusion, PXR exacerbates hepatic steatosis and inflammation accompanied by obesity- and inflammation-prone gut microbiome signature, suggesting that gut microbiome may contribute to PXR-mediated exacerbation of NAFLD.

Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are interesting materials owing to their interesting structural features and their many useful properties and applications. In particular, the structural features are greatly important to optimize the MOFs' porosities and so properties. Indeed, the MOFs' well-developed micropore and high surface area are the most important structural features, and as such, many practical applications of MOFs originate from these structural features. We herein demonstrate a strategy for improving the crystallinity of MOFs, and so increasing the porosity and surface area of poorly crystalline MOFs by making them in core-shell-type hybrids through the induced growth on the well-crystalline template. Although poorly crystalline versions of MOFs generate naturally in the absence of the well-crystalline template, well-crystalline versions of MOFs produce inductively in the presence of the well-crystalline template. In addition, the crystallinity enhancement of MOFs brings together the improvement in their porosities and surface areas. The surface areas and pore volumes of the well-crystalline versions of MOFs produced through the induced growth on the template are calculated based on this study, indicating that MOF surface areas increase by up to 7 times compared to the poorly crystalline versions.

The pregnane X receptor (PXR, NR1I2) is a xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptor that defends against toxic agents. We have shown that PXR promotes chronic ethanol (EtOH)-induced steatosis. Therefore, we examined the role of PXR in binge EtOH-induced hepatotoxicity. Male wild type (WT) and Pxr-null mice were orally administered three binge doses of EtOH (4.5 g/kg, every 12 hours) and euthanized four hours after the final dose. Pxr-null mice displayed higher basal mRNA levels of hepatic lipogenic transcription factor sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c (Srebp-1c) and its target stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (Scd1) and the lipid peroxide detoxifying aldo-keto reductase 1b7 (Akr1b7) and higher protein levels of EtOH-metabolizing alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1). In both genotypes, binge EtOH-induced triglyceride accumulation was associated with inhibition of fatty acid β-oxidation and upregulation of Srebp-1c- regulated lipogenic genes and hepatic CYP2E1 protein. Unexpectedly, gene expression of Cyp2b10, a constitutive androstane receptor target gene, implicated in EtOH hepatotoxicity, was PXR-dependent upregulated by binge EtOH. Also, PXR-dependent was the binge EtOH-induced inhibition of hepatic Akr1b8 mRNA, and protein levels of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) 1A1 and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2, but increased pro-apoptotic Bax protein expression, leading to increases in residual EtOH concentration and the cellular oxidative stress marker, malondialdehyde. In contrast, Pxr-null mice displayed increased Akr1b7 gene and ADH1 protein expression and hypertriglyceridemia following binge EtOH exposure. Taken together, this study demonstrates that PXR ablation prevents EtOH induced upregulation of Cyp2b10 and that PXR potentiates binge EtOH-induced oxidative stress and inhibition of EtOH catabolism, but protects against alcoholic hyperlipidemia.

Organic solvent-tolerant enzymes are generally stable in organic solvents, but the conformational changes of the enzymes in organic solvents have not been well studied. As cold-adapted enzymes exhibit increased conformational flexibility as compared with their mesophilic counterparts, we investigated the effects of polar organic solvents (dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, and ethanol) on the flexibility and stability relationship in the organic solvent-tolerant, cold-adapted lipases PML and LipS. To our surprise, both PML and LipS exhibited increased conformational flexibility as organic solvent concentration increased. The conformational flexibility required for maximal enzymatic activity differed between PML and LipS, suggesting distinct conformations of PML and LipS in each organic solvent for maximal enzymatic activity. However, greater structural flexibility of PML and LipS in organic solvents was associated with lower thermal denaturation midpoints. Our study suggests that the effects of organic solvents on conformational flexibility are specific to cold-adapted enzymes displaying intrinsic conformational flexibility at low temperatures. Organic solvent-tolerant, cold-adapted enzymes could be used to investigate the flexibility and stability relationship in enzymes in many different organic solvents.

Au or Ag nanoparticles-embedded hollow carbon spheres, which display outstanding catalytic activity and excellent recyclability, are prepared by a one-step pyrolysis of metal-organic framework (MOF) hybrids consisting of polystyrene cores and MOF shells loaded with noble metal ions (polystyrene@ZIF-8/M(n+) ; M(n+) = Au(3+) or Ag(+) ).

In this paper, we propose a new/next-generation type of CT examinations, the so-called Interior Computed Tomography (ICT), which may presumably lead to dose reduction to the patient outside the target region-of-interest (ROI), in dental x-ray imaging. Here an x-ray beam from each projection position covers only a relatively small ROI containing a target of diagnosis from the examined structure, leading to imaging benefits such as decreasing scatters and system cost as well as reducing imaging dose. We considered the compressed-sensing (CS) framework, rather than common filtered-backprojection (FBP)-based algorithms, for more accurate ICT reconstruction. We implemented a CS-based ICT algorithm and performed a systematic simulation to investigate the imaging characteristics. Simulation conditions of two ROI ratios of 0.28 and 0.14 between the target and the whole phantom sizes and four projection numbers of 360, 180, 90, and 45 were tested. We successfully reconstructed ICT images of substantially high image quality by using the CS framework even with few-view projection data, still preserving sharp edges in the images.

The controlled formation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) or coordination polymers (CPs) with suitable components and structural features is one of the most important themes in MOF research. In particular, the reliable preparation of hybrid MOFs containing more than two different kinds of metal ions or organic linkers and a comprehensive understanding of the structural flexibility of MOFs are the central issues for the production of MOFs with the desired properties. We report the synthesis of micro-sized hybrid MOF particles [also known as coordination polymer particles (CPPs)] containing two or three kinds of metal ions in each particle: {FexMyM′1−x−y}-MIL-88B (MIL stands for Materials of Institut Lavoisier, M and M′ = Ga, Co, or Mn). Scanning electron microscopy images revealed the formation of well-defined uniform micro-sized hexagonal rods, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and elemental mapping images verified the simultaneous incorporation of two or three kinds of metal ions within the CPPs. Interestingly, the structural features of CPPs made from MIL-88B were controlled by altering the anions involved in the structure. Incorporating large acetylacetonate anions within the structure resulted in the closed MIL-88B structure with a small cell volume. However, the open MIL-88B structure with a large cell volume was obtained when small chloride anions were incorporated. The intermediate semi-open MIL-88B structure was also prepared using nitrate anions. Three different structural forms of MIL-88B were verified by powder X-ray diffraction, whole pattern fitting, and thermogravimetric analysis.

A convenient method for the confined incorporation of highly active bimetallic PdCo nanocatalysts within a hollow and porous metal-organic framework (MOF) support is presented. Several chemical conversions occur simultaneously during the one-step low temperature pyrolysis of well-designed polystyrene@ZIF-67/Pd2+ core-shell microspheres, where ZIF (zeolitic imidazolate framework) is a subclass of MOF: the polystyrene core is removed, resulting in a beneficial hollow and porous ZIF support; the ZIF-67 shell acts as a well-defined porous support and as a felicitous Co2+ supplier for metal nanoparticle formation; and Pd2+ and Co2+ are reduced to form catalytically active bimetallic PdCo nanoparticles in the well-defined micropores, inducing the confined growth of PdCo nanoparticles with excellent dispersity.

We consider the problem of fusing probability scores from a set of classifiers to estimate a final fused probability score. Our interest is in scenarios where the classifiers are statistically dependent. To that end, we propose a new classifier fusion approach that is data driven and founded on the statistical theory of copulas. Numerical results with both simulated and real data show that our copula based classifier fusion approach produces better probability scores than individual classifiers and outperforms existing probability score fusion approaches.

In this paper, we propose a regular vine copula based methodology for the fusion of correlated decisions. Regular vine copula is an extremely flexible and powerful graphical model to characterize complex dependence among multiple modalities. It can express a multivariate copula by using a cascade of bivariate copulas, the so-called pair copulas. Assuming that local detectors are single threshold binary quantizers and taking complex dependence among sensor decisions into account, we design an optimal fusion rule using a regular vine copula under the Neyman-Pearson framework. In order to reduce the computational complexity resulting from the complex dependence, we propose an efficient and computationally light regular vine copula based optimal fusion algorithm. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Hollow particles are considered to be fascinating materials due to their useful applications and unique properties. Understanding the formation mechanism of hollow structures is critical for their controlled formation. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of hollow metal–organic framework (hollow MOF) microparticles via a one-step solvothermal reaction of Zn(NO3)2 and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) without extra template materials. The formation mechanism study of the hollow MOF reveals a unique self-templated formation mechanism consisting of three stages: (1) spherical microparticles are initially formed during the early stage of the reaction, (2) the initially formed spherical microparticles act as self-templates for the growth of new crystalline MOF materials during the middle stage of the reaction, and (3) the initially formed spherical microparticles spontaneously disappear for the formation of hollow MOFs during the late stage of the reaction.

We investigated the compressed-sensing (CS)-based deblurring framework incorporated with the total-variation (TV) regularization penalty for effective image deblurring of high accuracy in x-ray imaging. We implemented the proposed algorithm and performed a systematic experiment to demonstrate its viability for image deblurring in x-ray nondestructive testing. We obtained x-ray images of several selected electronic components at an x-ray tube condition of 80 kVp and 1.25 mAs and investigated the imaging characteristics in terms of the noise power spectrum and the modulation. We expect the proposed deblurring method to be applicable to improve the image characteristics considerably in x-ray nondestructive testing.

Simple thermal treatment of three-dimensional Kagome-like [In(OH)(BDC)]n (In–MIL-68) hexagonal lumps in the presence of an extra amount of 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) induces structural and morphological transformations of the hexagonal lumps into three-dimensional quartz-structured [InH(BDC)2]n (QMOF-2) pointed hexagonal rods. Transformation processes have been monitored by scanning electron microscopy to verify the destruction of the In–MIL-68-based hexagonal lumps and the simultaneous reconstruction of QMOF-2-based pointed hexagonal rods. We have also discovered the production of In–MIL-68-based hexagonal wires as early-stage kinetic products and the generation of QMOF-2-based pointed hexagonal rods as final-stage thermodynamic products from one-step solvothermal reaction of In(NO3)3 with an excess amount of H2BDC.

Microsized chemosensor particle (CPP-16, CPP means coordination polymer particle), which is made from a metal-organic framework (MOF), is synthesized using pyrene-functionalized organic building block. This building block contains three important parts, a framework construction part, a Cu(2+) detection part, and a fluorophore part. PXRD studies have revealed that CPP-16 has a 3D cubic structure of MOF-5. During both MOF formation and sensing event, fluorophores within CPP-16 undergo dual changes in conformation and optical properties. After MOF construction, pyrene moieties experience an unusual complete conversion from monomer to excimer form. This conversion takes place due to a confinement effect induced by space limitations within the MOF structure. The selective sensing ability of CPP-16 on Cu(2+) over many other metal ions is verified by emission spectra and is also visually identified by fluorescence microscopy images. Specific interaction of Cu(2+) with binding sites within CPP-16 causes a second conformational change of the fluorophores, where they change from stacked excimer (CPP-16) to quenched excimer states (CPP-16·Cu(2+)).

A precise fabrication of nanobamboo structures made from hybrid coordination polymers of the type {Fex In1-x }-MIL-88B is demonstrated. The compositions of the hybrid coordination polymer nanobamboos of {Fex In1-x }-MIL-88B (x=0.06, 0.19, or 0.75) are regulated by altering the amount of metal ions used in the reactions. Interestingly, the formation of a virtual In-MIL-88B (precise structure, {Fe0.06 In0.94 }-MIL-88B), which cannot be created in a typical reaction, is induced by the assistance of a Fe-MIL-88B structure. The a and c cell parameters of {Fe0.06 In0.94 }-MIL-88B are calculated at 10.95 and 19.86 Å, respectively. These values of {Fe0.06 In0.94 }-MIL-88B are larger than those of pure Fe-MIL-88B owing to the large ionic size of In(3+) within the framework.

We present a target tracking system for passive radar suitable for a digital audio/video broadcast (DAB/DVB) network with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) illuminators of opportunity. In this system bistatic range and range-rate are available as a measurement while angular information is assumed unavailable or of very poor quality. There is also a novel association ambiguity between the signals and illuminators, this in addition to the usual one between the signals and targets, and hence an interesting data association problem. Our intention is to provide tracks directly in the geographic space (3-D Cartesian domain). Here, four filters are suggested. The first two are the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) based on a joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) modified to incorporate the additional assignment complexity. The other two filters are a bootstrap particle filter (BPF) and an auxiliary particle filter (APF) based on the data association under the probabilistic multi-hypothesis tracker (PMHT) measurement model, which means that each measurement's assignment is independent of all others. Simulation results show that these four filters can work properly, albeit naturally with different performance characteristics and complexity.

The development of new electrocatalysts for electrochemical oxygen reduction to replace expensive and rare platinum-based catalysts is an important issue in energy storage and conversion research. In this context, conductive and porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered promising materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to not only their high surface area and well-developed pores but also versatile structural features and chemical compositions. Herein, the preparation of bimetallic conductive 2D MOFs (Cox Niy -CATs) are reported for use as catalysts in the ORR. The ratio of the two metal ions (Co2+ and Ni2+ ) in the bimetallic Cox Niy -CATs is rationally controlled to determine the optimal composition of Cox Niy -CAT for efficient performance in the ORR. Indeed, bimetallic MOFs display enhanced ORR activity compared to their monometallic counterparts (Co-CAT or Ni-CAT). During the ORR, bimetallic Cox Niy -CATs retain an advantageous characteristic of Co-CAT in relation to its high diffusion-limiting current density, as well as a key advantage of Ni-CAT in relation to its high onset potential. Moreover, the ORR-active bimetallic Cox Niy -CAT with excellent ORR activity is prepared at a large scale via a convenient method using a ball-mill reactor.

The most popular reconstruction algorithm for cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is based on the computationally-inexpensive filtered-backprojection (FBP) method. However, that method usually requires dense projections over the Nyquist samplings, which imposes severe restrictions on the imaging doses. Moreover, the algorithm tends to produce cone-beam artifacts as the cone angle is increased. Several variants of the FBP-based algorithm have been developed to overcome these difficulties, but problems with the cone-beam reconstruction still remain. In this study, we considered a compressed-sensing (CS)-based reconstruction algorithm for low-dose, high-quality dental CBCT images that exploited the sparsity of images with substantially high accuracy. We implemented the algorithm and performed systematic simulation works to investigate the imaging characteristics. CBCT images of high quality were successfully reconstructed by using the built-in CS-based algorithm, and the image qualities were evaluated quantitatively in terms of the universal-quality index (UQI) and the slice-profile quality index (SPQI).We expect the reconstruction algorithm developed in the work to be applicable to current dental CBCT systems, to reduce imaging doses, and to improve the image quality further.

The growth of one metal-organic framework (MOF) on another MOF for constructing a heterocompositional hybrid MOF is an interesting research topic because of the curiosity regarding the occurrence of this phenomenon and the value of hybrid MOFs as multifunctional materials or routes for fine-tuning MOF properties. In particular, the anisotropic growth of MOF on MOF is fascinating for the development of MOFs possessing atypical shapes and heterostructures or abnormal properties. Herein, we clarify the understanding of growth behavior of a secondary MOF on an initial MOF template, such as isotropic or anisotropic ways associated with their cell parameters. The isotropic growth of MIL-68-Br on the MIL-68 template results in the formation of core-shell-type MIL-68@MIL-68-Br. However, the unique anisotropic growth of a secondary MOF (MOF-NDC) on the MIL-68 template results in semitubular particles, and structural features of this unknown secondary MOF are successfully speculated for the first time on the basis of its unique growth behavior and morphological characteristics. Finally, the validation of this structural speculation is verified by the powder X-ray diffraction and the selected area electron diffraction studies. The results suggests that the growth behavior and morphological features of MOFs should be considered to be important factors for understanding the MOFs' structures.

The conjugation of Eu(3+)-doped coordination polymers constructed from Gd(3+) and isophthalic acid (H(2)IPA) with silica particles is investigated for the production of luminescent microspheres. A series of doping ratio-controlled silica@coordination polymer core-shell spheres is easily synthesized by altering the amounts of metal nodes used in the reactions, where the ratios of Gd(3+) and Eu(3+) are 10:0 (1a), 9:1 (1b), 8:2 (1c), 7:3 (1d), 5:5 (1e), and 0:10 (1f). The formation of monodisperse uniform core-shell structures is achieved throughout the entirety of a series. Investigations of the photoluminescence property of the resulting series of silica@coordination polymer core-shell spheres reveal that 20% Eu(3+)-doped product (1c) has the strongest emission intensity. The subsequent calcination process on the silica@coordination polymer core-shell structures (1a-f) results in the formation of a series of doping ratio-controlled silica@Gd(2)O(3):Eu core-shell microspheres (2a-f) with uniform shell thickness. During the calcination step, the coordination polymers within silica@coordination polymer core-shells are transformed into metal oxides, resulting in silica@Gd(2)O(3):Eu core-shell structures. The final etching process on the silica@Gd(2)O(3):Eu core-shell microspheres (2a-f) produces a series of hollow Gd(2)O(3):Eu microspheres (3a-f) as a result of the elimination of silica cores. The luminescence intensities of silica@Gd(2)O(3):Eu core-shell (2a-f) and hollow Gd(2) O(3):Eu microspheres (3a-f) also vary depending upon the doping ratio of Eu(3+) ions.

In this paper, we introduce limited-angle tomography in which the object being imaged is rotated around the center of an inclined X-ray beam, the so-called micro-DTS (digital tomosynthesis), with a few-view image reconstruction based on the compressed-sensing (CS) theory for applications of fast, low-dose X-ray imaging. We implemented an effective CS-based reconstruction algorithm for micro-DTS and performed systematic simulation works. The assessment of the image characteristics was performed by using several figures of merit such as the root-mean-square error (RMSE), the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and the universal image-quality index (UQI) to compare the reconstructed images to the simulated phantoms. According to our results, compared to the FBP-based method, the CS-based reconstruction method substantially enhanced image accuracy against image artifacts from few-view and limited-angle projections. In the simulation, 41 projections were used for the half-tomographic angles of 30°, 45°, and 60°, giving UQI values of 0.92 ∼ 0.97, which seems promising for potential applications of fast, low-dose X-ray imaging.

Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) is a limited-angle tomographic technique that provides some of the tomographic benefits of computed tomography (CT) but at reduced dose and cost. Thus, the potential for application of DTS to dental X-ray imaging seems promising. As a continuation of our dental radiography R&D, we developed an effective DTS reconstruction algorithm and implemented it in conjunction with a commercial dental CT system for potential use in dental implant placement. The reconstruction algorithm employed a backprojection filtering (BPF) method based upon optimal deblurring filters to suppress effectively both the blur artifacts originating from the out-focus planes and the high-frequency noise. To verify the usefulness of the reconstruction algorithm, we performed systematic simulation works and evaluated the image characteristics. We also performed experimental works in which DTS images of enhanced anatomical resolution were successfully obtained by using the algorithm and were promising to our ongoing applications to dental X-ray imaging. In this paper, our approach to the development of the DTS reconstruction algorithm and the results are described in detail.

Panoramic radiography with which only structures within a certain image layer are in focus and others out of focus on the panoramic image has become a popular imaging technique especially in dentistry. However, the major drawback to the technique is a mismatch between the structures to be focused and the predefined image layer mainly due to the various shapes and sizes of dental arches and/or to malpositioning of the patient. These result in image quality typically inferior to that obtained using intraoral radiographic techniques. In this paper, to overcome these difficulties, we suggest a new panoramic reconstruction algorithm, the so-called adaptive panoramic tomography (APT), capable of reconstructing multifocal image layers with no additional exposure. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we performed systematic simulation studies with a circular rotational movement and investigated the image performance.

Sensor localization using channel energy measurements of distributed sensors has been studied in various scenarios. However, it is usually assumed that the target does not move significantly during the time needed to collect and process the data from the sensors. We want to estimate the trajectory of a moving target using a network of distributed sensors that measure only the received signal strength (RSS), sampled and as a function of time, without knowledge of the target amplitude/source level. To reduce the communication load, sensors communicate a reduced data set to the fusion center (FC), generated through local processing. It consists of three characteristic parameters: i) the maximum measured amplitude, corresponding to the closest-point-of-approach (CPA); ii) the corresponding time index; and iii) the time it takes for the amplitude to diminish by 6 dB relative to the CPA. To generate the reduced data sets, each sensor calculates a local maximum likelihood (ML) estimate of its parameters. The accuracy of these local estimates can be reasonably described by their respective Fisher information matrices (FIMs). The FC combines the data transmitted by the sensors using a ML-like formulation based on the local FIMs. This results in a heavily nonlinear least-squares problem, which we initialize via geometrical considerations. This approach has a very low communication load, performs comparably to a centralized estimator, and due to the modularized setup, any measurement model at the sensors can be considered.

In this paper, we propose a multiobjective optimization framework for the sensor selection problem in uncertain Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The uncertainties of the WSNs result in a set of sensor observations with insufficient information about the target. We propose a novel mutual information upper bound (MIUB)-based sensor selection scheme, which has a low computational complexity, same as the Fisher information (FI)-based sensor selection scheme, and gives an estimation performance similar to the mutual information-based sensor selection scheme. Without knowing the number of sensors to be selected a priori, the multiobjective optimization problem (MOP) gives a set of sensor selection strategies that reveal different tradeoffs between two conflicting objectives: minimization of the number of selected sensors and minimization of the gap between the performance metric (MIUB and FI) when all the sensors transmit measurements and when only the selected sensors transmit their measurements based on the sensor selection strategy. Illustrative numerical results that provide valuable insights are presented. © 2016 IEEE.
