The effects of the recommended dose of 200 mg iron and of half that dose injected on the first day of life on health, iron status and performance during the 4 week suckling period were studied in 2'123 piglets. All piglets received creep feed and soil which was supplemented with 14 g iron per kg. Neither mortality nor the prevalence of arthritis, meningitis and foot abscess (each disease affecting about 1% of the piglets) differed between the two groups. The low dose of 100 mg iron decreased blood haemoglobin concentration at weaning (110 ± 19 vs.120 ± 15 g/l), but did not affect growth rate.An 2’123 Saugferkeln wurde untersucht, welche Auswirkungen die Injektion der empfohlenen Dosis von 200 mg Eisen bzw. der halben Dosis am ersten Lebenstag auf den Gesundheitszustand, den Eisenstatus und das Wachstum während der vierwöchigen Säugezeit hatte. Allen Ferkeln wurde ein Ferkelbeifutter und mit 14 g Eisen pro kg angereicherte Wühlerde angeboten. Die unterschiedliche Eisendosierung beeinflusste weder die Sterblichkeit noch die Prävalenz an Arthritis, Meningitis und Panaritium, an denen je rund 1 % der Ferkel erkrankte. Die Injektion von 100 mg Eisen reduzierte die Hämoglobinwerte zum Zeitpunkt des Absetzens (110 ± 19 gegenüber 120 ± 15 g/l), zeigte aber keinen Einfluss auf das Wachstum der Ferkel.Le présent travail de recherche, mené avec 2’123 porcelets allaités, avait pour objectif d’étudier les effets de l’injection, le premier jour de vie, d’une dose recommandée de 200 mg de fer de même que de la moitié de cette dose sur l’état de santé, le statut ferrique et la croissance des porcelets pendant les quatre semaines d’allaitement. Tous les porcelets avaient en plus à disposition de la terre à fouiller enrichie de 14 g de fer par kg et d’un aliment complémentaire. Les différents dosages en fer n’ont influencé ni la mortalité ni la prévalence de l’arthrite, de la méningite et du panaris, chaque affection ayant touché environ 1% des porcelets. Les valeurs de l’hémoglobine au moment du sevrage étaient plus basses chez les porcelets qui avaient reçu 100 mg de fer (110 ± 19 contre 120 ± 15 g/l), mais leur croissance n’a toutefois pas été influencée.Sono stati eseguiti dei test su 2’123 lattonzoli per osservare gli effetti sulla salute, sul tenore di ferro e sulla crescita di iniezioni della dose raccomandata di 200 mg di ferro e della metà della dose. Le iniezioni sono state effettuate il primo giorno di vita e i lattonzoli osservati per un periodo di quattro settimane. A tutti i suinetti è stata data terra per grufolare con 14 g di ferro per kg e un alimento complementare. Le differenze nella dose non hanno avuto alcun un influsso né sulla mortalità né sulla prevalenza di artrite, meningite e patereccio. Ciascuna di queste prevalenze ha toccato circa l’1% dei suinetti. I valori di emoglobina alla fine dello svezzamento erano più bassi nei suinetti che avevano ricevuto 100 mg di ferro (110 ± 19 rispetto al 120 ± 15 g/l). An experimental model for postweaning diarrhea with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli F4 (ETEC F4) was set up in piglets, and the efficacy of 1% chestnut-tannin extract in preventing diarrhea was subsequently assessed. In a first trial (infection model), 32 Swiss Large White piglets (age: 24 days; average BW: 7.8 ± 0.8 kg) were randomly assigned to two experimental groups (infected [INF], noninfected [NINF]). In a subsequent trial, 72 Swiss Large White piglets (age: 26 days; average BW: 7.4 ± 1.5 kg) were blocked by BW and assigned within block to four experimental groups: NINF-CO: not infected and fed a standard control starter diet (CO); INF-CO: infected and fed the CO diet; NINF-TA: not infected and fed the CO diet supplemented with 1% chestnut extract containing 54% of hydrolysable tannins (TA); and INF-TA: infected and fed the TA diet. Both diets (TA and CO) were formulated to be isocaloric and isoproteic and to meet or surpass the nutritional requirements. In both trials, four days after weaning, piglets assigned to the INF group received an oral suspension of ETEC F4. Fecal score, ETEC shedding in feces (only in trial 2), and growth performance traits were measured for the following 14 days post infection. In both trials, more than 50% of the INF piglets developed diarrhea within six days post infection. Tannins reduced (P < 0.05) the average fecal score, the percentage of piglets in diarrhea, and the duration of diarrhea, whereas feed intake and the average daily gain were unaffected., PLoS ONE, 13 (5), ISSN:1932-6203

The oral group treatment is still a common procedure in swine production. This project studied the effect of the application of 3 different formulations of antimicrobial premixes (1. chlortetracycline, 2. chlortetracycline + sulfadimidine + tylosin, 3. sulfadimidine + sulfathiazole + trimethoprim) via the liquid feeding system on the occurrence of tetracycline-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (Ent-Tetr) in the liquid feed. 156 and 112 feed samples were collected between April and December 2015 in 13 case and 14 control farms, respectively. The 27 farms were randomly selected pig fattening farms located in different parts of Switzerland. The number of feed samples that contained Ent-Tetr as well as the number of Enterobacteriaceae resistant to tetracycline per sample was significantly higher in the case group than in the control group. The use of any of the 3 antimicrobial combinations turned out to be the main risk factor for the occurrence of Ent-Tetr in the liquid feed. Our results suggest that liquid feed containing antimicrobials is a reservoir of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in swine production.Die orale Gruppentherapie ist eine immer noch verbreitete Managementmassnahme in der Schweineproduktion. Diese Arbeit untersuchte den Effekt der Applikation von 3 verschiedenen Formulierungen antibiotikahaltiger Arzneimittelvormischungen (1. Chlortetrazyklin, 2. Chlortetrazyklin + Sulfadimidin + Tylosin, 3. Sulfadimidin + Sulfathiazol + Trimethoprim) über die Flüssigfütterungsanlage auf das Vorkommen Tetrazyklin-resistenter Enterobacteraiaceae (Ent-Tetr) im Flüssigfutter. 156 bzw. 112 Futterproben wurden zwischen April und Dezember 2015 auf 13 Fall- bzw. 14 Kontrollbetrieben erhoben. Bei den 27 Betrieben handelte es sich um zufällig ausgewählte Schweinemastbetriebe aus verschiedenen Regionen der Schweiz. Die Anzahl Futterproben, die Tetrazyklin-resistente Enterobacteriaceae enthielten, sowie die Keimzahl Ent-Tetr pro Futterprobe waren signifikant höher in der Fall- als in der Kontrollgruppe. Der Einsatz der untersuchten Formulierungen von Arzneimittelvormischungen konnte als Hauptrisikofaktor für das Auftreten von Ent-Tetr im Flüssigfutter identifiziert werden. Die Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass antibiotikahaltiges Flüssigfutter ein Reservoir für Antibiotika-resistente Bakterien in der Schweineproduktion darstellt.Le traitement de groupe oral est une technique encore répandue dans la production porcine. Le présent travail étudie l’effet de l’application, au moyen du système d’alimentation liquide, de trois prémélanges de compositions différentes (1. Chlortétracycline, 2. Chlortétracycline + Sulfadimidine + Tylosine, 3. Sulfadimidine + Sulfathiazol + Trimethoprime) sur la présence d’entérobactériacées résistantes à la tétracycline (Ent-Tetr) dans l’aliment liquide. Entre avril et décembre 2015, 156 respectivement 112 échantillons d’aliments ont été prélevés dans 13 exploitations-test respectivement dans 14 exploitations de contrôle. Il s’agissait, pour ces 27 exploitations, d’exploitations d’engraissement de porcs choisies au hasard dans diverses régions de la Suisse. Le nombre d’échantillons contenant des entérobactériacées résistantes à la tétracycline ainsi que le nombre de germes Ent-Tetr par échantillon était significativement plus élevé dans les exploitations test que dans celles de contrôle. L’utilisation des formulations de prémélanges étudiées a pu être identifiée comme le facteur de risque principal de voir apparaitre des Ent-Tetr dans les aliments liquides. Ces résultats laissent à penser que, dans la production porcine, les aliments liquides contenant des antibiotiques représentent un réservoir pour les bactéries résistantes aux antibiotiques.La terapia di gruppo per via orale viene sempre considerata una diffusa misura gestionale nella produzione suina. Questo studio ha esaminato l’effetto dell’applicazione di tre diverse formulazioni di farmaci premiscelati (1 clorotetraciclina, 2 clorotetraciclina + sulfadimidina + tilosina, 3 sulfadimidina + sulfatiazolo + trimetoprima) via un sistema di alimentazione liquida sulla presenza di enterobatteriacee resistenti alla tetraciclina (Ent-Tetr) nel mangime liquido. Sono stati raccolti tra aprile e dicembre 2015, 156 risp. 112 campioni di mangime in 13 aziende infettate risp. 14 aziende di controllo. Le 27 aziende sono state scelte a caso tra le aziende di allevamento di suini provenienti da varie regioni della Svizzera. Il numero di campioni di mangime contenenti enterobatteriacee resistenti alla tetraciclina e il numero di batteri Ent-Tetr per campione di mangime erano significativamente più alti nel gruppo infettato che nel gruppo di controllo. L’uso delle formulazioni esaminate di farmaci premiscelati potrebbe essere identificato come un importante fattore di rischio per l’insorgenza di Ent-Tetr nel mangime liquido. I risultati suggeriscono che il mangime liquido contenente antibiotici possa creare un serbatoio per i batteri resistenti agli antibiotici nella produzione suina.

In this article, the current knowledge and knowledge gaps in the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in livestock and plants and importance in terms of animal and human health are discussed. Some recommendations are provided for generation of the data required in order to develop risk assessments for AMR within agriculture and for risks through the food chain to animals and humans.
