Abstract: WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. Abstract: We present the version of the point source catalogue of the XXL Survey that was used, in part, in the first series of XXL papers. In this paper we release, in our database in Milan and at CDS: (i) the X-ray source catalogue with 26056 objects in two areas of 25 deg2; (ii) the associated multiwavelength catalogues with candidate counterparts of the X-ray sources in the infrared, near-infrared, optical, and ultraviolet (plus spectroscopic redshift when available); and (iii) a catalogue of spectroscopic redshifts recently obtained in the southern XXL area. We also present the basic properties of the X-ray point sources and their counterparts. Abstract: Galaxy clusters trace the highest density peaks in the large-scale structure of the Universe. Their clustering provides a powerful probe that can be exploited in combination with cluster mass measurements to strengthen the cosmological constraints provided by cluster number counts. We investigate the spatial properties of a homogeneous sample of X-ray selected galaxy clusters from the XXL survey, the largest programme carried out by the XMM-Newton satellite. The measurements are compared to $\Lambda$-cold dark matter predictions, and used in combination with self-calibrated mass scaling relations to constrain the effective bias of the sample, $b_{eff}$, and the matter density contrast, $\Omega_{\rm M}$. We measured the angle-averaged two-point correlation function of the XXL cluster sample. The analysed catalogue consists of $182$ X-ray selected clusters from the XXL second data release, with median redshift $\langle z \rangle=0.317$ and median mass $\langle M_{500} \rangle\simeq1.3\cdot10^{14} M_\odot$. A Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis is performed to extract cosmological constraints using a likelihood function constructed to be independent of the cluster selection function. Abstract: Superclusters form from the largest enhancements in the primordial density perturbation field and extend for tens of Mpc, tracing the large-scale structure of the Universe. We characterise XLSSsCN01, a rich supercluster at z~0.3 detected in the XXL Survey, composed of X-ray clusters of different virial masses and luminosities. As one of the first studies on this topic, we investigate the stellar populations of galaxies in different environments in the supercluster region. We study a magnitude-limited (r10.8) of galaxies in the virialised region and in the outskirts of 11 XLSSsCN01 clusters, in high- and low-density field. We compute the stellar population properties of galaxies using spectral energy distribution and spectral fitting techniques, and study the dependence of star formation rates (SFR), colours, and stellar ages on environment. For r-12 and with (g-r)_rf10.8, no trends with environment emerge, as massive galaxies are mostly already passive in all environments. No differences among low- and high-density field members and cluster members emerge in the sSFR-mass relation. The luminosity-weighted age-mass relation of the passive populations within cluster virial radii show signatures of recent environmental quenching. The study of luminous and massive galaxies in this supercluster shows that while environment has a prominent role in determining the fractions of SFing/blue galaxies, its effects on the star formation activity in SFing galaxies are negligible., 16 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: Context. We present an estimation of cosmological parameters with clusters of galaxies. Aims. We constrain the $\Omega_m$, $\sigma_8$, and $w$ parameters from a stand-alone sample of X-ray clusters detected in the 50 deg$^2$ XMM-XXL survey with a well-defined selection function. Methods. We analyse the redshift distribution of a sample comprising 178 high S/N clusters out to a redshift of unity. The cluster sample scaling relations are determined in a self-consistent manner. Results. In a lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) model, the cosmology favoured by the XXL clusters compares well with results derived from the Planck S-Z clusters for a totally different sample (mass/redshift range, selection biases, and scaling relations). However, with this preliminary sample and current mass calibration uncertainty, we find no inconsistency with the Planck CMB cosmology. If we relax the $w$ parameter, the Planck CMB uncertainties increase by a factor of $\sim$10 and become comparable with those from XXL clusters. Combining the two probes allows us to put constraints on $\Omega_m$=0.316$\pm$0.060, $\sigma_8$=0.814$\pm$0.054, and $w$=-1.02$\pm$0.20. Conclusions. This first self-consistent cosmological analysis of a sample of serendipitous XMM clusters already provides interesting insights into the constraining power of the XXL survey. Subsequent analysis will use a larger sample extending to lower confidence detections and include additional observable information, potentially improving posterior uncertainties by roughly a factor of 3., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables, accepted as a letter by Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Context. The next generation of galaxy surveys will provide cluster catalogues probing an unprecedented range of scales, redshifts, and masses with large statistics. Their analysis should therefore enable us to probe the spatial distribution of clusters with high accuracy and derive tighter constraints on the cosmological parameters and the dark energy equation of state. However, for the majority of these surveys, redshifts of individual galaxies will be mostly estimated by multiband photometry which implies non-negligible errors in redshift resulting in potential difficulties in recovering the real-space clustering. Aims. We investigate to which accuracy it is possible to recover the real-space two-point correlation function of galaxy clusters from cluster catalogues based on photometric redshifts, and test our ability to detect and measure the redshift and mass evolution of the correlation length r0 and of the bias parameter b(M,z) as a function of the uncertainty on the cluster redshift estimate. Methods. We calculate the correlation function for cluster sub-samples covering various mass and redshift bins selected from a 500 deg2 light-cone limited to H < 24. In order to simulate the distribution of clusters in photometric redshift space, we assign to each cluster a redshift randomly extracted from a Gaussian distribution having a mean equal to the cluster cosmological redshift and a dispersion equal to σz. The dispersion is varied in the range \hbox{$\sigma_{(z=0)}=\frac{\sigma_{z}}{1+z_{\rm c}} = 0.005,0.010,0.030$} and 0.050, in order to cover the typical values expected in forthcoming surveys. The correlation function in real-space is then computed through estimation and deprojection of wp(rp). Four mass ranges (from Mhalo > 2 × 1013h-1M⊙ to Mhalo > 2 × 1014h-1M⊙) and six redshift slices covering the redshift range [0, 2] are investigated, first using cosmological redshifts and then for the four photometric redshift configurations. Results. From the analysis of the light-cone in cosmological redshifts we find a clear increase of the correlation amplitude as a function of redshift and mass. The evolution of the derived bias parameter b(M,z) is in fair agreement with theoretical expectations. We calculate the r0−d relation up to our highest mass, highest redshift sample tested (z = 2,Mhalo > 2 × 1014h-1M⊙). From our pilot sample limited to Mhalo > 5 × 1013h-1M⊙(0.4 < z < 0.7), we find that the real-space correlation function can be recovered by deprojection of wp(rp) within an accuracy of 5% for σz = 0.001 × (1 + zc) and within 10% for σz = 0.03 × (1 + zc). For higher dispersions (besides σz > 0.05 × (1 + zc)), the recovery becomes noisy and difficult. The evolution of the correlation in redshift and mass is clearly detected for all σz tested, but requires a large binning in redshift to be detected significantly between individual redshift slices when increasing σz. The best-fit parameters (r0 and γ) as well as the bias obtained from the deprojection method for all σz are within the 1σ uncertainty of the zc sample.

Abstract: The XXL Survey is the largest homogeneous and contiguous survey carried out with XMM-Newton. Covering an area of 50 square degrees distributed over two fields, it primarily investigates the large-scale structures of the Universe using the distribution of galaxy clusters and active galactic nuclei as tracers of the matter distribution. Given its depth and sky coverage, XXL is particularly suited to systematically unveiling the clustering of X-ray clusters and to identifying superstructures in a homogeneous X-ray sample down to the typical mass scale of a local massive cluster. A friends-of-friends algorithm in three-dimensional physical space was run to identify large-scale structures. In this paper we report the discovery of the highest redshift supercluster of galaxies found in the XXL Survey. We describe the X-ray properties of the clusters members of the structure and the optical follow-up. The newly discovered supercluster is composed of six clusters of galaxies at a median redshift z around 0.43 and distributed across approximately 30 by 15 arc minutes (10 by 5 Mpc on sky) on the sky. This structure is very compact with all the clusters residing in one XMM pointing; for this reason this is the first supercluster discovered with the XXL Survey. Spectroscopic follow-up with WHT (William Herschel Telescope) and NTT (New Technology Telescope) confirmed a median redshift of z = 0.43. An estimate of the X-ray mass and luminosity of this supercluster and of its total gas mass put XLSSC-e at the average mass range of superclusters; its appearance, with two members of equal size, is quite unusual with respect to other superclusters and provides a unique view of the formation process of a massive structure., A&A, accepted; special XXL issue

Abstract: Context. The XXL Survey is the largest survey carried out by the XMM-Newton satellite and covers a total area of 50 square degrees distributed over two fields. It primarily aims at investigating the large-scale structures of the Universe using the distribution of galaxy clusters and active galactic nuclei as tracers of the matter distribution. Aims. This article presents the XXL bright cluster sample, a subsample of 100 galaxy clusters selected from the full XXL catalogue by setting a lower limit of $3\times 10^{-14}\,\mathrm{erg \,s^{-1}cm^{-2}}$ on the source flux within a 1$^{\prime}$ aperture. Methods. The selection function was estimated using a mixture of Monte Carlo simulations and analytical recipes that closely reproduce the source selection process. An extensive spectroscopic follow-up provided redshifts for 97 of the 100 clusters. We derived accurate X-ray parameters for all the sources. Scaling relations were self-consistently derived from the same sample in other publications of the series. On this basis, we study the number density, luminosity function, and spatial distribution of the sample. Results. The bright cluster sample consists of systems with masses between $M_{500}=7\times 10^{13}$ and $3\times 10^{14} M_\odot$, mostly located between $z=0.1$ and 0.5. The observed sky density of clusters is slightly below the predictions from the WMAP9 model, and significantly below the predictions from the Planck 2015 cosmology. In general, within the current uncertainties of the cluster mass calibration, models with higher values of $\sigma_8$ and/or $\Omega_m$ appear more difficult to accommodate. We provide tight constraints on the cluster differential luminosity function and find no hint of evolution out to $z\sim1$. We also find strong evidence for the presence of large-scale structures in the XXL bright cluster sample and identify five new superclusters., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 25 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables. Abstract: X-ray extragalactic surveys are ideal laboratories for the study of the evolution and clustering of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The XXL Survey spans two fields of a combined 50 $deg^2$ observed for more than 6Ms with XMM-Newton, occupying the parameter space between deep surveys and very wide area surveys; at the same time it benefits from a wealth of ancillary data. This paper marks the first release of the XXL point source catalogue selected in the 2-10 keV energy band with limiting flux $F_{2-10keV}=4.8\cdot10^{-14}\rm{erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}}$. We use both public and proprietary data sets to identify the counterparts of the X-ray point-like sources and improved upon the photometric redshift determination for AGN by applying a Random Forest classification trained to identify for each object the optimal photometric redshift model library. We also assign a probability to each source to be a star or an outlier. We model with Bayesian analysis the X-ray spectra assuming a power-law model with the presence of an absorbing medium. We find an average unabsorbed photon index of $\Gamma=1.85$ and average hydrogen column density $\log{N_{H}}=21.07 cm^{-2}$. We find no trend of $\Gamma$ or $N_H$ with redshift and a fraction of 26% absorbed sources ($\log N_{H}>22$). We show that the XXL-1000-AGN number counts extended the number counts of the COSMOS survey to higher fluxes and are fully consistent with the Euclidean expectation. We constrain the intrinsic luminosity function of AGN in the 2-10 keV energy band where the unabsorbed X-ray flux is estimated from the X-ray spectral fit up to z=3. Finally, we demonstrate the presence of a supercluster size structure at redshift 0.14, identified by means of percolation analysis of the XXL-1000-AGN sample. Abstract: We study the characteristics of the galaxy cluster samples expected from the European Space Agency's Euclid satellite and forecast constraints on cosmological parameters describing a variety of cosmological models. The method used in this paper, based on the Fisher Matrix approach, is the same one used to provide the constraints presented in the Euclid Red Book (Laureijs et al.2011). We describe the analytical approach to compute the selection function of the photometric and spectroscopic cluster surveys. Based on the photometric selection function, we forecast the constraints on a number of cosmological parameter sets corresponding to different extensions of the standard LambdaCDM model. The dynamical evolution of dark energy will be constrained to Delta w_0=0.03 and Delta w_a=0.2 with free curvature Omega_k, resulting in a (w_0,w_a) Figure of Merit (FoM) of 291. Including the Planck CMB covariance matrix improves the constraints to Delta w_0=0.02, Delta w_a=0.07 and a FoM=802. The amplitude of primordial non-Gaussianity, parametrised by f_NL, will be constrained to \Delta f_NL ~ 6.6 for the local shape scenario, from Euclid clusters alone. Using only Euclid clusters, the growth factor parameter \gamma, which signals deviations from GR, will be constrained to Delta \gamma=0.02, and the neutrino density parameter to Delta Omega_\nu=0.0013 (or Delta \sum m_\nu=0.01). We emphasise that knowledge of the observable--mass scaling relation will be crucial to constrain cosmological parameters from a cluster catalogue. The Euclid mission will have a clear advantage in this respect, thanks to its imaging and spectroscopic capabilities that will enable internal mass calibration from weak lensing and the dynamics of cluster galaxies. Abstract: We present the analysis of our 13 and 22 cm ATCA observations of the central region of the merging galaxy cluster A3921 (z=0.094). We investigated the effects of the major merger between two sub-clusters on the star formation (SF) and radio emission properties of the confirmed cluster members. The origin of SF and the nature of radio emission in cluster galaxies was investigated by comparing their radio, optical and X-ray properties. We also compared the radio source counts and the percentage of detected radio galaxies with literature data. We detected 17 radio sources above the flux density limit of 0.25 mJy/beam in the central field of A3921, among which 7 are cluster members. 9 galaxies with star-forming optical spectra were observed in the collision region of the merging sub-clusters. They were not detected at radio wavelengths, giving upper limits for their star formation rate significantly lower than those typically found in late-type, field galaxies. Most of these star-forming objects are therefore really located in the high density part of the cluster, and they are not infalling field objects seen in projection at the cluster centre. Their SF episode is probably related to the cluster collision that we observe in its very central phase. None of the galaxies with post-starburst optical spectra was detected down our 2$\sigma$ flux density limit, confirming that they are post-starburst and not dusty star-forming objects. We finally detected a narrow-angle tail (NAT) source associated with the second brightest cluster galaxy (BG2), whose diffuse component is a partly detached pair of tails from an earlier period of activity of the BG2 galaxy., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A, date of acceptance 29/06/2006. Abstract: We combine multi-object spectroscopy from the 2dF and EFOSC2 spectrographs with optical imaging of the inner 30'x30' of A2384 taken with the ESO Wide Field Imager. We carry out a kinematical analysis using the EMMIX algorithm and biweight statistics. We address the possible presence of cluster substructures with the Dressler-Shectman test. Cluster galaxies are investigated with respect to [OII] and H{\alpha} equivalent width. Galaxies covered by our optical imaging observations are additionally analysed in terms of colour, star formation rate and morphological descriptors such as Gini coefficient and M20 index. We study cluster galaxy properties as a function of clustercentric distance and investigate the distribution of various galaxy types in colour-magnitude and physical space. The Dressler-Shectman test reveals a substructure in the east of the 2dF field-of-view. We determine the mass ratio between the northern and southern subcluster to be 1.6:1. In accordance with other cluster studies, we find that a large fraction of the disk galaxies close to the cluster core show no detectable star formation. Probably these are systems which are quenched due to ram-pressure stripping. The sample of quenched disks populates the transition area between the blue cloud and the red sequence in colour-magnitude space. We also find a population of morphologically distorted galaxies in the central cluster region. The substructure in the east of A2384 might be a group of galaxies falling onto the main cluster. We speculate that our sample of quenched spirals represents an intermediate phase in the ram-pressure driven transformation of infalling field spirals into cluster S0s. This is motivated by their position in colour-magnitude space. We present a sample of 22 distant (z>0.8) galaxy clusters and cluster candidates selected from the 9 deg2 footprint of the overlapping X-ray Multi Mirror (XMM) Large Scale Structure (LSS), CFHTLS Wide and Spitzer SWIRE surveys. Clusters are selected as extended X-ray sources with an accompanying overdensity of galaxies displaying optical to mid-infrared photometry consistent with z>0.8. Abstract: We present a spectrophotometric analysis of the galaxy pop. in the area of the merging cluster Abell 3921 at redshift 0.093. We investigate the impact of the complex cluster environment on galaxy properties such as morphology or star formation rate. We combine multi-object spectroscopy from the 2dF spectrograph with optical imaging taken with the ESO WFI. We carry out a redshift analysis and determine cluster velocity dispersions using biweight statistics. Applying a Dressler-Shectman (DS-)test we seek evidence for cluster substructure. Cluster and field galaxies are investigated with respect to [OII] and H{\alpha} equivalent width, SFR and morphological descriptors such as concentration index and Gini coefficient. We study these cluster galaxy properties as a function of clustercentric distance and investigate the spatial distribution of various galaxy types. Applying the DS-test we find a 3rd component (A3921-C) in addition to the two main subclusters (A3921-A and A3921-B) already known. The re-determined mass ratio between the main components A and B is approx. 2:1. Similar to prev. studies of galaxy clusters, we find that a large fraction of the disk galaxies close to the cluster core show no detectable star formation. These are likely systems that are quenched due to ram pressure stripping. We also find quenched spirals at rather large distances of 3 to 4 Mpc from the cluster core. A3921-C might be a group of galaxies falling onto the main cluster components. We speculate that the unexpected population of quenched spirals at large clustercentric radii in A3921-A and A3921-B might be an effect of the ongoing cluster merger: shocks in the ICM might give raise to enhanced ram pressure stripping and at least in part be the cause for the quenching of star formation. Abstract: Aims. We investigate the morphology and dynamics of the massive nearby galaxy cluster Abell 1413.Methods. Using wide field imaging and spectroscopic data obtained from observations at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and archival SDSS data, we build a sample of more than 250 galaxies covering a region centered on the cluster and extending to its outskirts on large scales.Results. We probe the cluster morphology analyzing the projected density distribution of galaxies and find a strong variation in the ellipticity of the distribution, from 0.8 at the center of the cluster down to ~0.35 at the periphery. This may be the tracer of a prolate global mass distribution, slightly attenuated in the collisional distribution of the gas. We also study the large scale environment, identifying several structures associated to the cluster and organized along the major axis in the North-South direction. From spectroscopic data we derive the velocity dispersion and we investigate the overall dynamics of the cluster. The regular velocity dispersion supports the case for a prolate cluster aligned in the plane of the sky and embedded in a larger scale structure.

Abstract: Located at z = 0.203, A2163 is a rich galaxy cluster with an intra-cluster medium (ICM) that exhibits extraordinary properties, including an exceptionally high X-ray luminosity, average temperature, and a powerful and extended radio halo. The irregular and complex morphology of its gas and galaxy structure suggests that this cluster has recently undergone major merger events that involve two or more cluster components. In this paper, we study the gas structure and dynamics by means of spectral-imaging analysis of X-ray data obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. From the evidence of a cold front, we infer the westward motion of a cool core across the E-W elongated atmosphere of the main cluster A2163-A. Located close to a galaxy over-density, this gas 'bullet' appears to have been spatially separated from its galaxy (and presumably dark matter component) as a result of high-velocity accretion. From gas brightness and temperature profile analysis performed in two opposite regions of the main cluster, we show that the ICM has been adiabatically compressed behind the crossing 'bullet' possibly because of shock heating, leading to a strong departure of the ICM from hydrostatic equilibrium in this region. Assuming that the mass estimated from the Yx proxy best indicates the overall mass of the system and that the western cluster sector is in approximate hydrostatic equilibrium before subcluster accretion, we infer a merger scenario between two subunits of mass ratio 1:4, leading to a present total system mass of M500 $\propto 1.9 \times 1015 M_{\odot}$. The exceptional properties of A2163 present various similarities with those of 1E0657-56, the so-called 'bullet-cluster'. Abstract: We present a combined X-ray and optical analysis of three bimodal galaxy clusters selected as merging candidates at z ~ 0.1. These targets are part of MUSIC (MUlti--Wavelength Sample of Interacting Clusters), which is a general project designed to study the physics of merging clusters by means of multi-wavelength observations. Observations include spectro-imaging with XMM-Newton EPIC camera, multi-object spectroscopy (260 new redshifts), and wide-field imaging at the ESO 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes. We build a global picture of these clusters using X-ray luminosity and temperature maps together with galaxy density and velocity distributions. Idealized numerical simulations were used to constrain the merging scenario for each system. We show that A2933 is very likely an equal-mass advanced pre-merger ~ 200 Myr before the core collapse, while A2440 and A2384 are post-merger systems ~ 450 Myr and ~1.5 Gyr after core collapse, respectively). In the case of A2384, we detect a spectacular filament of galaxies and gas spreading over more than 1 h^{-1} Mpc, which we infer to have been stripped during the previous collision. The analysis of the MUSIC sample allows us to outline some general properties of merging clusters: a strong luminosity segregation of galaxies in recent post-mergers; the existence of preferential axes --corresponding to the merging directions-- along which the BCGs and structures on various scales are aligned; the concomitance, in most major merger cases, of secondary merging or accretion events, with groups infalling onto the main cluster, and in some cases the evidence of previous merging episodes in one of the main components. These results are in good agreement with the hierarchical scenario of structure formation, in which clusters are expected to form by successive merging events, and matter is accreted along large--scale filaments.

Abstract: We apply a matched-filter cluster detection algorithm to the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) i-band data for the Deep-1, Deep-2, Deep-3 and Deep-4 fields covering a total of 4square degrees. To test the implemented procedure we carry out simulations for assessing the frequency of noise peaks as well as estimate the recovery efficiency. We estimate that up to z~0.7 the catalogue is essentially complete for clusters of richness class R>~1. The recovered redshifts are in general overestimated by dz=0.1 with a scatter of sigma_dz~0.1, except at redshifts z>~1 where the estimated redshifts are systematically underestimated. The constructed cluster candidate catalogue contains 162 detections over an effective area of 3.112 square degrees corresponding to a density of ~52.1 per square degree. The median estimated redshift of the candidates is z=0.6. The estimated noise frequency is 16.9+-5.4 detections per square degree. From visual inspection we identify systems that show a clear concentration of galaxies with similar colour. Abstract: We present the Chandra analysis of the galaxy cluster A521 (z=0.247). The high resolution of the Chandra observation has allowed us to refine the original merging scenario proposed for A521, and to reveal new features in its X-ray emission. A521 has strongly substructured ICM density and temperature maps. Its X-ray diffuse emission is elongated along a NW/SE direction (SX2) and shows two major components, a main cluster and a northern group of galaxies. This latter is in turn substructured, showing a clump of cold and very dense gas centred on the BCG, and a northern tail aligned in the SX2 direction. A compression of the X-ray isophotes is also observed South of the BCG. We conclude that the northern group is infalling onto the main cluster along the NW/SE direction. This hypothesis is corroborated by the presence of a hot bar in the ICM temperature map located between the southern and northern regions, as the gas could be compressionally heated due to the subclusters' collision. The hot region corresponds to the eastern part of an over-dense ridge of galaxies, along which it was originally suggested that a merging of subclusters has recently occurred along the line of sight. An alternative hypothesis about the origin of the hot central bar is that we could observe in projection the shock fronts due to this older cluster-cluster collision. Two other structures possibly interacting with the main cluster are detected on the West and North-East sides of the BCG. We also uncover the presence of two northern edges in the ICM density. A521 is a spectacular example of a multiple merger cluster made up by several substructures converging at different epochs towards the centre of the system. Abstract: We present the results of a new spectroscopic and photometric survey of the central region of the galaxy cluster A3921 (z=0.094). We detect the presence of two dominant clumps of galaxies: a main cluster centred on the BCG (A3921-A), and a NW sub-cluster (A3921-B) hosting the second brightest cluster galaxy. The distorted morphology of the two sub-clusters suggests that they are interacting, while the velocity distribution of 104 confirmed cluster members does not reveal strong signatures of merging. By applying a two-body dynamical formalism to the two sub-clusters of A3921, and by comparing our optical results to the X-ray analysis of A3921 based on XMM observations (Belsole et al. 2004), we conclude that A3921-B is probably tangentially traversing the main cluster along a SW/NE direction. Our estimate of the star formation properties of the cluster members reveals substantial fractions of both emission-line (~13%) and post-star-forming objects (k+a's,~16%). A lack of bright k+a's with respect to higher redshift clusters is observed, while the fraction of k+a's increases towards fainter magnitudes. The spatial and velocity distributions of k+a's galaxies, their red colours and their moderate Balmer absorption lines suggest that their presence is difficult to relate to the on-going merging event. Star forming galaxies, which are mostly concentrated in A3921-B and between the two sub-clusters, share neither the same kinematics, nor the same projected distribution of the passive cluster members. Abstract: We present indications, based on a sample of 303 Abell clusters, for a relation between the dynamical state of clusters and the alignments of galaxy members with their parent cluster major axis orientation as well as with the large scale environment within which the clusters are embedded. The statistical results are complemented with a deep, wide-field case study of galaxy alignments in the cluster A521, which is characterised by multiple merging events (Maurogrdato et al 2000, Ferrari et al. 2003) and whose galaxy members show a strong alignment signal out to $\sim 5 h^{-1}$ Mpc. Our results show that galaxy alignments appear to be stronger the more dynamically young is the cluster, especially when found in high-density environments. Abstract: Recent analysis of the SSRS2 data based on cell-counts and two-point correlation function has shown that very luminous galaxies are much more strongly clustered than fainter galaxies. In fact, the amplitude of the correlation function of very luminous galaxies ($L > L^*$) asymptotically approaches that of $R \ge 0$ clusters. In this paper we investigate the properties of the most luminous galaxies, with blue absolute magnitude $M_B \le -21$. We find that: 1) the population mix is comparable to that in other ranges of absolute magnitudes; 2) only a small fraction are located in bona fide clusters; 3) the bright galaxy-cluster cross-correlation function is significantly higher on large scales than that measured for fainter galaxies; 4) the correlation length of galaxies brighter than \MB $ \sim -20.0$, expressed as a function of the mean interparticle distance, appears to follow the universal dimensionless correlation function found for clusters and radio galaxies; 5) a large fraction of the bright galaxies are in interacting pairs, others show evidence for tidal distortions, while some appear to be surrounded by faint satellite galaxies. We conclude that very luminous optical galaxies differ from the normal population of galaxies both in the clustering and other respects. Abstract: We have developed a method for detecting clusters in large imaging surveys, based on the detection of structures in galaxy density maps made in slices of photometric redshifts. This method was first applied to the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) Deep 1 field by Mazure et al. (2007), then to all the Deep and Wide CFHTLS fields available in the T0004 data release by Adami et al. (2010). The validity of the cluster detection rate was estimated by applying the same procedure to galaxies from the Millennium simulation. Here we analyse with the same method the full CFHTLS Wide survey, based on the T0006 data release. Abstract: We present a weak-lensing analysis of the merging cluster A2163 using Subaru/Suprime-Cam and CFHT/Mega-Cam data and discuss the dynamics of this cluster merger, based on complementary weak-lensing, X-ray, and optical spectroscopic datasets. From two dimensional multi-component weak-lensing analysis, we reveal that the cluster mass distribution is well described by three main components, including a two component main cluster A2163-A with mass ratio 1:8, and its cluster satellite A2163-B. The bimodal mass distribution in A2163-A is similar to the galaxy density distribution, but appears as spatially segregated from the brightest X-ray emitting gas region. We discuss the possible origins of this gas-dark matter offset and suggest the gas core of the A2163-A subcluster has been stripped away by ram pressure from its dark matter component. The survival of this gas core to the tidal forces exerted by the main cluster let us infer a subcluster accretion with a non-zero impact parameter. Dominated by the most massive component of A2163-A, the mass distribution of A2163 is well described by a universal Navarro-Frenk-White profile as shown by a one-dimensional tangential shear analysis, while the singular-isothermal sphere profile is strongly ruled out. Comparing this cluster mass profile with profiles derived assuming intracluster medium hydrostatic equilibrium (H.E.) in two opposite regions of the cluster atmosphere has allowed us to confirm the prediction of a departure from H.E. in the eastern cluster side, presumably due to shock heating. Yielding a cluster mass estimate of M_{500}=11.18_{-1.46}^{+1.64}\times10^{14}h^{-1}Msun, our mass profile confirm the exceptionally high mass of A2163, consistent with previous analyses relying on the cluster dynamical analysis and Yx mass proxy., 17 pages, 11 figures, ApJ, in press. Abstract: We analyse the two--dimensional all--sky distribution of rich Abell and ACO galaxy clusters by using counts in cells and measuring the high--order area--averaged angular correlation functions. Confirming previous results, we find a well defined hierarchical relation between the two and three--point correlation functions, remarkably constant with scale. In the angular range $2^\circ \le \theta \le 4^\circ$, the southern sample, limited at $b_{II} \le -40^\circ$ and including both Abell and ACO clusters, shows a remarkable hierarchical behavior up to the 6th order, while northern Abell clusters give positive correlations in the same range only up to the 4th order. The inferred deprojected values of the 3--D coefficients $S_J$, where $S_J = \bar{\xi}_J / {\bar{\xi}_2}^{J-1}$, are similar to those measured for the galaxy distribution, and consistent with theoretical predictions. These results are confirmed to the 4th order by our analysis of a 3--D sample of Abell and ACO clusters. Assuming that selection effects and / or the absence of a cluster fair sample are the reason of the difference between the two galactic hemispheres, and between Abell and ACO clusters, our results indicate that the statistical properties of the cluster distribution originate from the underlying galaxy distribution and show that the biasing between clusters and galaxies is non--linear., Comment: 29 pp., (ApJ, accepted for publication). Abstract: The variation of the galaxy clustering properties is analyzed when either the luminosity range, the depth or the location in space, or the morphology class of the tested subsample varies. Although these variations are examined with the two-point correlation functions, it is shown that the results derived from them are difficult to interpret because of normalization problems. Thus the study rather concentrates on the void probability function, which is free of normalization effects and provides information on the high order properties of the statistics.

32. The Void Probability Function as a Statistical Indicator

Abstract: Recent results concerning the galaxy distribution at scales < 100 h−1 Mpc (Ho = 100 h kms−1 Mpc−1) show a number of characteristics which cannot be described by conventional statistical models. Correlation functions, for instance, can in no way give account of the presence of voids of the cellular (or spongy) appearance of the local galaxy distribution (M. Geller, this conference). There is clearly a need for new kinds of statistical models and statistical indicators.

Abstract: A method for estimating the void probability function (VPF) from any volume- and absolute magnitude-limited galaxy catalog is developed and applied to three volume- and magnitude-limited subclasses from the CfA catalog which involve different luminosity classes. The VPF is calculated for each subclass and the count probability of finding N galaxies in a volume V is calculated for N = 1 to 4, successively. It is shown that each of the samples obeys a scaling invariance predicted by the class of hierarchical models, suggesting that this property applies to the whole galaxy distribution. This result permits a comparison of the VPFs for the three samples, and is it shown that bright galaxies are more clustered than faint ones in the samples studied. Estimations of the two-point correlation functions show that bright and faint galaxies appear to obey a universal distribution. 24 references.

Abstract: An X-ray survey with the XMM-Newton telescope, XMM-XXL, has identified hundreds of galaxy groups and clusters in two 25 deg$^2$ fields. Combining spectroscopic and X-ray observations in one field, we determine how the kinetic energy of galaxies scales with hot gas temperature and also, by imposing prior constraints on the relative energies of galaxies and dark matter, infer a power-law scaling of total mass with temperature. Our goals are: i) to determine parameters of the scaling between galaxy velocity dispersion and X-ray temperature, $T_{\rm 300kpc}$, for the halos hosting XXL-selected clusters, and; ii) to infer the log-mean scaling of total halo mass with temperature, $\langle \ln M_{200} \, | \, T, z \rangle$. We apply an ensemble velocity likelihood to a sample of $> 1500$ spectroscopic redshifts within $132$ spectroscopically confirmed clusters with redshifts $z < 0.6$ to model, $\langle \ln \sigma_{\rm gal}\,|\,T,z\rangle$, where $\sigma_{\rm gal}$ is the velocity dispersion of XXL cluster member galaxies and $T$ is a 300 kpc aperture temperature. To infer total halo mass we use a precise virial relation for massive halos calibrated by N-body simulations along with a single degree of freedom summarizing galaxy velocity bias with respect to dark matter. For the XXL-N cluster sample, we find $\sigma_{\rm gal} \propto T^{0.63\pm0.05}$, a slope significantly steeper than the self-similar expectation of $0.5$. Assuming scale-independent galaxy velocity bias, we infer a mean logarithmic mass at a given X-ray temperature and redshift, $\langle\ln (E(z) M_{200}/10^{14}\,{\rm M}_{\odot})|T,z\rangle=\pi+\alpha \ln(T/T_p )+\beta\ln (E(z)/E(z_p) )$ using pivot values ${\rm k}T_{p}=2.2\,{\rm keV}$ and $z_p=0.25$, with normalization $\pi=0.45\pm0.24$ and slope $\alpha=1.89\pm0.15$. Abstract: We present a detailed spatial and dynamical analysis of the central $\sim$~2.2~\h~Mpc region of the galaxy cluster Abell~521 (z=0.247), based on 238 spectra obtained at the 3.6~m Telescope of ESO and at the CFHT. From the analysis of the 125 galaxies confirmed members of the cluster, we derive a mean velocity of $74019 ^{+112}_{-125}$ km/s and detect a complex velocity distribution with high velocity dispersion, $1325 ^{+145}_{-100}$ km/s), but clear departure from a single gaussian component. The general structure of the cluster follows a NW/SE direction, crossed by a perpendicular high density ``ridge'' of galaxies in the core region. The northern region of the cluster is characterized by a lower velocity dispersion as compared to the whole cluster value; it hosts the BCG and a dynamically bound complex of galaxies, and it is associated to a group detected in X-ray (Arnaud et al 2000). This region could be in pre-merger stage onto the main cluster nearly in the plane of the sky. These results, taken together with the fact that most of the clumps detected on the isodensity maps, as well as the early type galaxies and the brightest ones are aligned, suggest that this NW/SE direction is the preferred one for the formation of this cluster. The central high dense region shows a lower velocity location ($73625 ^{+344}_{-350}$ km/s) and significantly higher scale ($1780 ^{+234}_{-142}$ km/s) as compared to the whole cluster values. This is due to the presence of a low-velocity group of galaxies with a high fraction of emission line objects. This can be explained in a scenario in which a merging of subclusters has recently occurred along the direction of the ``ridge'' with a significant component along the line of sight., Comment: 21 pages, 32 figures, uses aa.cls style, Latex. Abstract: We propose a method to map the temperature distribution of the hot gas in galaxy clusters that uses resolved images of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect in combination with X-ray data. Application to images from the New IRAM KIDs Array (NIKA) and XMM-Newton allows us to measure and determine the spatial distribution of the gas temperature in the merging cluster MACS J0717.5+3745, at $z=0.55$. Despite the complexity of the target object, we find a good morphological agreement between the temperature maps derived from X-ray spectroscopy only -- using XMM-Newton ($T_{\rm XMM}$) and Chandra ($T_{\rm CXO}$) -- and the new gas-mass-weighted tSZ+X-ray imaging method ($T_{\rm SZ}$). We correlate the temperatures from tSZ+X-ray imaging and those from X-ray spectroscopy alone and find that $T_{\rm SZ}$ is higher than $T_{\rm XMM}$ and lower than $T_{\rm CXO}$ by $\sim 10\%$ in both cases. Our results are limited by uncertainties in the geometry of the cluster gas, contamination from kinetic SZ ($\sim 10\%$), and the absolute calibration of the tSZ map ($7\%$). Abstract: Measurement of the gas velocity distribution in galaxy clusters provides insight into the physics of mergers, through which large scale structures form in the Universe. Velocity estimates within the intracluster medium (ICM) can be obtained via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, but its observation is challenging both in term of sensitivity requirement and control of systematic effects, including the removal of contaminants. In this paper we report resolved observations, at 150 and 260 GHz, of the SZ effect toward the triple merger MACS J0717.5+3745 (z=0.55), using data obtained with the NIKA camera at the IRAM 30m telescope. Assuming that the SZ signal is the sum of a thermal (tSZ) and a kinetic (kSZ) component and by combining the two NIKA bands, we extract for the first time a resolved map of the kSZ signal in a cluster. The kSZ signal is dominated by a dipolar structure that peaks at -5.1 and +3.4 sigma, corresponding to two subclusters moving respectively away and toward us and coincident with the cold dense X-ray core and a hot region undergoing a major merging event. We model the gas electron density and line-of-sight velocity of MACS J0717.5+3745 as four subclusters. Combining NIKA data with X-ray observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra, we fit this model to constrain the gas line-of-sight velocity of each component, and we also derive, for the first time, a velocity map from kSZ data (i.e. that is model-dependent). Our results are consistent with previous constraints on the merger velocities, and thanks to the high angular resolution of our data, we are able to resolve the structure of the gas velocity. Finally, we investigate possible contamination and systematic effects with a special care given to radio and submillimeter galaxies. Up to now ∼ 50% of the survey has been completed, providing about 2000 galaxy redshifts.

Abstract: Addressing fundamental questions regarding our understanding of the Universe, such as the cause of its accelerated expansion or the nature of dark matter, requires to confront theories and observations. In this context, galaxy clusters can be used as powerful observational probes. However, their current utilisation is limited by uncertainties and systematic effects, notably affecting the measurement of their mass, which is presumably dominated by dark matter.Galaxy clusters can be studied at different wavelengths: the hot gas composing the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM) shines in X-ray and is observable at millimetre wavelengths via the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect, whereas galaxies emit principally in the optical and infrared. Combining and comparing these observables allows us to reduce the uncertainties and systematics in the cosmological constraints obtained from clusters. In this context, this thesis aims at paving the way of future large surveys such as Euclid and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. It presents the multi-wavelengths analyses of a sample of clusters detected in X-ray in the XXL survey, spanning a wide range of masses and redshifts. The first part of the thesis introduces the cosmological context and presents the observational properties of galaxies and clusters, and the ingredients to build cosmological cluster samples. The second part concentrates on the optical characterisation of XXL clusters and the properties of their member galaxies. It starts by presenting XXL and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS), an optical counterpart survey. Then, it focuses on the characterisation of the CFHTLS photometric redshifts quality and their use to construct the optical galaxy luminosity functions (LF) of XXL clusters. The LF of satellite galaxies is found to slightly depend on cluster richness, the main optical mass proxy, but no significant redshift evolution is observed. Then, the study of the colour and active galactic nuclei (AGN) fraction in XXL cluster galaxies is performed, finding that the mass plays a key role in shaping AGN and star formation activity in clusters. Finally, the WaZP optical cluster finder algorithm is used to investigate the optical counterparts of XXL clusters. The third part of this thesis is dedicated to the observational project dedicated to the mapping of the SZ signal in three distant XXL clusters, with the high angular resolution NIKA2 camera. The preparation of the project is discussed, making use of the X-ray and optical data to predict the expected SZ signal. Then, the observation procedure at the telescope and the data reduction, dedicated to produce calibrated SZ maps, are presented. The project is still ongoing and one cluster, XLSSC102, at z = 0.97, has been partially observed. The development of the blind detection of galaxies potentially contaminating the SZ signal is developed, allowing for the serendipitous discovery of dusty star forming galaxies in the field of XLSSC102. The morphology and dynamical state of XLSSC102 are then characterised using optical, SZ and X-ray data and the radial ICM thermodynamics and mass profiles are measured combining SZ and X-ray data. This allows us to show that XLSSC102 is a merging cluster with a mass ∼ 3 × 10 14 M, and is compatible with the standard evolution scenario of cluster formation.; Répondre aux questions fondamentales concernant notre compréhension de l’Univers, comme la cause de son expansion accélérée ou la nature de la matière noire, requiert de confronter les théories aux observations. Dans ce contexte, les amas de galaxies peuvent être utilisés comme de puissantes sondes observationnelles. Cependant, à l’heure actuelle, leur utilisation est limitée par des incertitudes et des effets systématiques, qui affectent notamment la mesure de leur masse, que l’on présume dominée par la matière noire. Les amas de galaxies peuvent être étudiés à différentes longueurs d’onde : le gaz chaud qui compose le milieu intra-amas (ICM en anglais) émet des rayons X et est observable dans le domaine millimétrique via l’effet Sunyaev Zel’dovich (SZ), alors que les galaxies rayonnent principalement en optique et infrarouge. Combiner et comparer ces observables permet de réduire les incertitudes et les effets systématiques des contraintes cosmologiques issues des amas. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse a pour but de préparer les grands relevés observationnels du futur comme Euclid et le Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). Elle présente les analyses multi-longueurs d’onde d’un échantillon d’amas détectés en X dans le relevé XXL, couvrant une large gamme de masses et de redshifts. La première partie de cette thèse introduit le contexte cosmologique et présente les propriétés observationnelles des galaxies et amas de galaxies, ainsi que les ingrédients pour construire des échantillons cosmologiques d’amas. La deuxième partie traite de la caractérisation optique des amas XXL et des propriétés de leurs galaxies membres. Nous commençons par la présentation de XXL et du Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS), un relevé optique associé. Ensuite, nous nous concentrons sur la caractérisation de la qualité des redshifts photométriques du CFHTLS et sur leur utilisation pour construire les fonctions de luminosité (LF en anglais) optiques des galaxies d’amas XXL. Il apparaît que la LF des galaxies satellites dépend légèrement de la richesse des amas, le principal proxy de masse en optique, mais ne montre pas d’évolution significative avec le redshift. Ensuite, nous entreprenons l’étude de la couleur et de la fraction de galaxies à noyaux actifs (AGN en anglais) dans les galaxies d’amas XXL et montrons que la masse joue un rôle clé dans la régulation de l’activité de formation stellaire dans les amas. Pour finir, l’algorithme de détection d’amas WaZP est utilisé pour étudier la contrepartie optique des amas XXL. La troisième partie de cette thèse est consacrée au projet observationnel dédié à la cartographie du signal SZ de trois amas XXL distants, avec la camera à haute résolution angulaire NIKA2. La préparation du projet est discutée, en se servant des données optiques et X afin de prédire le signal SZ attendu. Ensuite, nous présentons la procédure d’observation au télescope et la réduction des données, dédiée à la production des cartes SZ étalonnées. Le projet est en cours et un amas, XLSSC102, à z = 0.97, a été observé partiellement. Nous développons ensuite une méthode de détection en aveugle des potentielles galaxies qui peuvent contaminer le signal SZ, permettant la découverte fortuite de galaxies poussiéreuses à haut taux de formation stellaire dans le champ de XLSSC102. La morphologie et l’état dynamique de XLSSC102 sont ensuite caractérisés grâce à la combinaison des données optiques, SZ et X et les profils radiaux de masse et de propriétés thermodynamiques de l’ICM sont mesurés en associant les données X et SZ. Cela permet de montrer que XLSSC102 est un amas en coalescence avec une masse de ∼ 3 × 10^14 Msol et est compatible avec le scénario d’évolution standard de la formation des amas.

Abstract: I aim to study to which accuracy it is actually possible to recover the real-space to-point correlation function from cluster catalogues based on photometric redshifts. I make use of cluster sub-samples selected from a light-cone simulated catalogue. Photometric redshifts are assigned to each cluster by randomly extracting from a Gaussian distribution having a dispersion varied in the range σ (z=0) = 0.005 à 0.050. The correlation function in real-space is computed through deprojection method. Four masse ranges and six redshifts slices covering the redshift range 0N200) est similaire à Σ(>masse), ainsi que la fonction de biais qui peut être reproduite à 1σ près.

Abstract: The document gives an overview of my research works from the last ten years: simulation of galaxy clusters at millimeter wavelengths, extraction of galaxy clusters from Planck data, cosmological constraints from cluster catalogues, estimation of cluster masses using the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background by clusters, studies of scaling laws, extraction of kinetic, relativistic and polarized Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects, follow-up of Planck clusters, design of future missions.; Ce manuscrit synthétise mes travaux de recherches des dix dernières années : simulation des amas de galaxies aux longueurs d'onde millimétriques, extraction des amas de galaxies des données Planck, obtention de contraintes cosmologiques à partir des catalogues d'amas, estimation de masse des amas par effet de lentille gravitationnelle sur le fond diffus cosmologique, étude des lois d'échelle des amas, extraction des effets Sunyaev-Zel'dovich cinétique, relativiste et polarisé, suivi d'amas Planck particuliers, définition des missions futures.

43. Morphological classification of an optical sample of clusters of galaxies

Abstract: Clusters of galaxies are one of the main cosmological probes used to constrain the cosmological parameters, through their mass function and their growth rate. The measure of these two quantities require the determination of the dynamical state of clusters. The present and future large and deep sky surveys give access to a more complete information on clusters and legitimate the development of new methods of determination of their dynamical state. In this thesis, a new method of characterization of the cluster morphology has been developed. It is a 2+1D method using galaxies and it enables to develop a new morphological classification of clusters. Structures around clusters are detected and characterized in projection and along the line of sight using a wavelet analysis. The new classification consists in counting the number of structures in the vicinity of clusters, three clusters classes were defined : unimodal, bimodal and multimodal. The ellipticity and the Gaussianity of the distribution of radial velocities are also used to refine the classification. The method was applied to a subsample of 403 clusters from the C4cluster catalogue using data from the SDSS. The results are : 25% of the clusters are unimodals, 33% are bimodals and 42% are multimodals. The stability of the classification with respect to the different parameters used was also performed as well as a comparison with the results from other studies in the literature.; Les amas de galaxies sont l'une des sondes cosmologiques permettant de contraindre les modèles d'univers, via leur fonction de masse et leur vitesse de croissance, elles-mêmes mesurées par l'état dynamique des amas. Les grands relevés présents et futurs permettent d'avoir accès à une information plus nombreuse et plus complète sur les amas de galaxies et donc d'utiliser de nouvelles méthodes de détermination de leur état dynamique. Dans cette thèse, une nouvelle méthode de caractérisation morphologique 2+1D des amas a été développée afin d'établir une nouvelle classification des amas. Il s'agit d'une méthode optique basée sur la position et la vitesse radiale des galaxies. Les structures dans la zone d'influence des amas sont détectées et caractérisées en projection et dans l'espace des vitesses radiales à l'aide d'une analyse en ondelettes. À partir du nombre de structures, les amas sont classés en amas unimodal, bimodal ou multimodal. L'ellipticité de leur distribution projetée et la gaussianité de la distribution des vitesses radiales sont également utilisées pour raffiner la classification. Une analyse de la stabilité de la classification a également été réalisée ainsi qu'une comparaison avec les résultats de la littérature, que ce soit d'un point de vue statistique ou au niveau des amas individuels.

Abstract: Despite decades of intensive observational and theoretical work, we are still far from a complete and clear understanding of the nearby universe, the Milky Way (MW) and its neighbours. Among the satellites of the MW, the Small and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are of particular interest since they form the closest example of galaxies in gravitational and hydrodynamical interaction, and therefore constitute a unique laboratory to study the effect of tides and matter exchange on the chemical evolution and star formation history of a galaxy. The LMC is a low-mass barred disc galaxy, prototypical of gas-rich galaxies that are thought to play an important role in the build-up of large galaxies in the ΛCDM framework. Furthermore, with its present day metallicity of only third of solar, the chemical enrichment path followed by the LMC gives a heavy weight to the yields of metal-poor stellar generations, which makes the LMC an ideal environment to study nucleosynthesis at low metallicities. This thesis work aims at: 1) chemically characterizing the LMC bar population, 2) comparing the elemental trends of the MW and the LMC and interpreting the differences or similarities in terms of chemical evolution and/or nucleosynthesis processes (constraints on the nucleosynthetic sites and processes), 3) comparing the chemical evolution of the LMC bar and inner disc and interpreting the differences or similarities between the LMC bar and inner disc in the context of the bar formation. Our results show that the chemical history of the LMC experienced a strong contribution from type Ia supernovae as well as a strong s-process enrichment from metal-poor AGB winds. Massive stars made a smaller contribution to the chemical enrichment compared to the MW. The observed differences between the bar and the disc speak in favour of an episode of enhanced star formation a few Gyr ago, occurring in the central parts of the LMC and leading to the formation of the bar. This is in agreement with recently derived star formation histories.; Malgré des années de travaux théoriques et observationnels intensifs, nous sommes toujours loin d’une complète compréhension de l’univers proche, la Voie Lactée (MW) et ses galaxies voisines. Parmi les satellites de la MW, le Petit et le Grand Nuage de Magellan (LMC) sont particulièrement intéressants puisqu’ils forment le plus proche exemple de galaxies en interaction gravitationnelle et hydrodynamique, et partant, constituent un laboratoire unique pour étudier les effets des marées et l’échange de matière sur l’évolution chimique et l’histoire de la formation stellaire d’une galaxie. Le LMC est une galaxie de petite masse barrée à disque, prototype des galaxies riches en gaz que l’on pense jouer un rôle important dans la construction des grandes galaxies dans le cadre du ΛCDM. De plus, avec sa métallicité actuelle d’environ le tiers de la métallicité solaire, le chemin d’enrichissement chimique suivi par le LMC donne un grand poids aux yields des générations stellaires pauvres en métaux, ce qui fait du LMC un environnement idéal pour étudier la nucléosynthèse aux basses métallicités. Ce travail de doctorat vise à: 1) caractériser chimiquement la population de la barre du LMC, 2) comparer les tendances des éléments de la MW et du LMC et interpréter les différences ou ressemblance en termes d’évolution chimique et/ou de processus nucléosynthétiques (contraintes sur les sites et les processus nucléosynthétiques), 3) comparer l’évolution chimique de la barre et du disque interne du LMC et interpréter les différence ou ressemblance dans le contexte de la formation de la barre. Nos résultats montrent que l’histoire chimique du LMC a connu un forte contribution des supernovae de type I ainsi qu’un fort enrichissement en éléments s par les vents d’étoiles AGB pauvres en métaux. Par rapport à la MW, les étoiles massives ont eu une contribution plus petite à l’enrichissement chimique du LMC. Les différences observées entre la barre et le disque parlent en faveur d’un épisode de formation stellaire accrue il y a quelques Gyr, ayant lieu dans les zones centrales du LMC et conduisant à la formation de la barre. Ceci est en accord avec les histoires de la formation stellaire récemment dérivées.
