1. The role of manganese in CoMnOx catalysts for selective long-chain hydrocarbon production via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

Abstract: Abstract Cobalt is an efficient catalyst for Fischer−Tropsch synthesis (FTS) of hydrocarbons from syngas (CO + H2) with enhanced selectivity for long-chain hydrocarbons when promoted by Manganese. However, the molecular scale origin of the enhancement remains unclear. Here we present an experimental and theoretical study using model catalysts consisting of crystalline CoMnOx nanoparticles and thin films, where Co and Mn are mixed at the sub-nm scale. Employing TEM and in-situ X-ray spectroscopies (XRD, APXPS, and XAS), we determine the catalyst’s atomic structure, chemical state, reactive species, and their evolution under FTS conditions. We show the concentration of CHx, the key intermediates, increases rapidly on CoMnOx, while no increase occurs without Mn. DFT simulations reveal that basic O sites in CoMnOx bind hydrogen atoms resulting from H2 dissociation on Co0 sites, making them less available to react with CHx intermediates, thus hindering chain termination reactions, which promotes the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons.

Abstract: This review summarizes the syntheses and applications of metal oxysulfides. Bulk compounds of rare earth and transition metals are discussed in the section Introduction. After a presentation of their main properties and applications, their structures are presented and their syntheses are discussed. The section Bulk Materials and Their Main Applications is dedicated to the growing field of nanoscaled metal oxysulfides. Synthesis and applications of lanthanide-based nanoparticles are more mature and are discussed first. Then, works on transition-metal based nanoparticles are presented and discussed. Altogether, this review highlights the opportunities offered by metal oxysulfides for application in a range of technological fields, in relation with the most advanced synthetic routes and characterization techniques.

3. Risk Analysis and Technology Assessment of Emerging (Gd,Ce)2O2S Multifunctional Nanoparticles: An Attempt for Early Safer-by-Design Approach

Abstract: Acceptability and relevance of nanoparticles in the society is greatly improved using a safer-by-design strategy. However, this is difficult to implement when too late in the development process or when nanoparticles are already on the market (e.g., TiO2). We employ this strategy for emerging nanoparticles of lanthanide oxysulfide of formula (Gd,Ce)2O2S, relevant for photocatalysis as well as for multimodal imaging, as the bandgap of the nanoparticles, related to their Ce content, impacts their ability to absorb visible light. As a first step, we investigated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a function of cerium content, in abiotic conditions and in vitro using murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line. We demonstrate that, at sub-lethal doses, Ce-containing oxysulfide nanoparticles are responsible for a higher ROS intracellular formation than cerium-free Gd2O2S nanoparticles, although no significant inflammatory response or oxidative stress was measured. Moreover, there was no significant loss of cerium as free cation from the nanoparticles, as evidenced by X-ray fluorescence mapping. Based on these results, we propose a risk analysis for lanthanide oxysulfide nanoparticles, leading to a technology assessment that fulfills the safer-by-design strategy.

Abstract: International audience; Transition metal carbides (TMCs) have attracted great interest due to their mechanical and catalytic properties but their syntheses generally require energy-consuming processes with temperatures above 800 °C. We report here a solid-state metathesis reaction between metal chlorides (ZrCl 4 , NbCl 5 , MoCl 3 , MoCl 5 , HfCl 4 , TaCl 5 , WCl 6) and potassium dispersed in carbon (graphite or acetylene black). The reaction is initiated at room temperature or with gentle heating below 75 °C. Within seconds, it produces carbon-supported carbide or metallic nanoparticles of diameter below 50 nm. The phase speciation depends on the metal and different process parameters. In some cases (ZrCl 4 , NbCl 5 , HfCl 4 , TaCl 5), the metal is further converted into a hydride upon neutralization of the reaction crude with ethanol. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Based on thermodynamic and kinetic considerations, we propose a mechanism explaining the coexistence of several phases (metal, carbide, hydride) and their occurrence at each step of the reaction.

Abstract: International audience; The formation of iron phosphide nanoparticles (FexP) is a well‐studied process. It usually uses air‐sensitive phosphorus precursors such as n‐trioctylphosphine or white phosphorus. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of a remarkably stable tetrakis(acyl)cyclotetraphosphane, P4(MesCO)4. We demonstrate that this compound can be used as a stoichiometric source of P(0) species in order to synthesize FeP and Fe2P nanoparticles at only 250 °C. This tunable process provides a route to monodisperse nanoparticles with different compositions and crystallinities. We combine X‐Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) to study the local order and bonding in the amorphous and crystalline materials. We show that crystalline FeP forms via an intermediate amorphous phase (obtained at a lower temperature) that presents local order similar to that of the crystalline sample. We explore their electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic and neutral electrolytes. In both electrolytes, amorphous FeP is a more efficient catalyst than crystalline FeP, itself more efficient than crystalline Fe2P. Our study paves the way for a more systematic investigation of amorphous metal phosphide phases in electrocatalysis. It also shows the beneficial use of PDF on the highly challenging characterization of amorphous nanomaterials.

Abstract: International audience; Bimetallic nickel-cobalt nanoparticles are highly sought for their potential as catalytic and magnetic nanoparticles. These are typically prepared in organic solvents in the presence of strong stabilizing ligands such as tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP). Due to the variety of cobalt crystallographic phases and to the strong interaction of the ligands with the metallic surfaces, forming fcc nanoparticles rather than phase mixture is a challenging endeavor. Here, using a two-step synthesis strategy that aims at a core-shell nickel-cobalt morphology, we demonstrated that many parameters have to be adjusted: concentration of the metal precursors, stoichiometry of TOP, and heating program from room temperature to 180 °C. We found optimized conditions to form size-controlled fcc NiCo nanoparticles from preformed Ni nanoparticles, and the phase attribution was confirmed with a combination of X-Ray diffraction on powder and X-Ray absorption spectroscopy at Co K edge. We then investigated the early stages of Co nucleation on the nickel using a lower stoichiometry of Co, down to 0.05 equiv. vs. Ni. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled to energy-dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy, we showed that cobalt reacts first on the nickel nanoparticles but easily forms cobalt-rich larger aggregates in the further steps of the reaction.

Abstract: International audience; The discovery of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) represented a major breakthrough in modern organic chemistry, allowing the transition metal-free activation of chemical bonds in mild conditions. Consequently, FLP chemistry involving molecular Lewis acids and Lewis bases has witnessed an impressive advancement in the last decade. Nevertheless, the range of viable catalytic reactions is limited due to the formation of too stable adducts between the reaction substrate and the Lewis acid/base couple and to the high distance between catalytic sites borne by separated molecular pairs in solution. In contrast, traditional heterogeneous catalysts made of transition metal nanoparticles present adjacent active sites, although they usually require harsher conditions to be activated. The design of an FLP on metallic nanoparticles could allow the activation of small molecules in milder conditions. Herein, we propose the concept of a NanoFLP in a colloidal solution where one partner is a phosphine Lewis base and the other is the Lewis acid surface of a NiCo nanoparticle. We attempt to apply this concept to the hydrosilylative reduction of benzaldehyde. While a classical surface organometallic path through the oxidative addition of the silane on the sole metal center cannot be disproved at this stage, the reaction requires the presence of at least 5 mol % phosphine in conjunction with the NiCo nanoparticles, which represent a tenfold excess of phosphines vs metal surface atoms, a situation that should disfavor the presence of free metal sites apt to perform the oxidative addition. We identify a correlation between the Tolman cone angle and the silane conversion, consistent with both mechanisms; however, we found no clear correlation between the Tolman electronic parameter and the reaction outcome. The influence of silane bulkiness was also investigated and a less bulky phosphine was required for the reaction to work with a bulkier silane. Structural analyses evidenced that the nanoparticles are not altered during the reaction, which led us to propose the formation of a NanoFLP as a transient species in solution.

The ultimate goal was to create a unified international network for younger chemists to connect and share ideas. Successful efforts led to the official launch of IYCN as an associated organization of IUPAC at the 46th World Chemistry Congress (IUPAC2017) held in Brazil.

Abstract: International audience; Bimetallic phosphide nanoparticles are drawing a great interest as a family of nanomaterials. Controlling their fine features such as surface composition, core crystal structure and overall composition is a key to further application. Copper and nickel are particularly interesting first-raw metals for their abundance and relevance in several branches of catalysis. In order to synthesize crystalline bimetallic phosphide Ni-CuP nanoparticles, core-shell copper-nickel nanoparticles were reacted with white phosphorus (P 4). Surprisingly, hollow monocrystalline (Ni,Cu) 2 P nanoparticles were formed alongside Cu nanoparticles and crystallized in a phase isostructural to Ni 2 P. Using a combination of local and ensemble analytic techniques, we showed that this unique structure is the result of several competing processes: phosphorus migration, interaction of stabilizing ligands with copper as well as metal phosphide phase crystallization. This study provides important mechanistic insights to rationalize bimetallic phosphide nanoparticles syntheses. Beyond metal phosphides, this well-characterized case study about competing diffusion and crystallization processes is of major relevance for the advancement of materials sciences at the nanoscale.

Abstract: International audience; Alkali cations are required for the colloidal synthesis of Ln$_2$O$_2$S nanoplates in organic solvent. Based on a thorough experimental analysis using various lanthanides and three alkali ions, we challenge the commonly accepted scenario of partial lanthanide substitution by the alkali, which is supposed to favor the sulfide insertion over the oxide one. Using SAXS-WAXS on aliquots taken from the synthesis medium, we demonstrate the formation of an alkali-stabilized oleate mesophase acting as a template for nanoparticles nucleation and growth. As a consequence, the alkali is not incorporated into the crystalline structure; nanoparticle growth requires only a low alkali concentration that can be readily washed away from the final nanoparticles powder. We expect that similar mesophases may form in other colloidal synthesis using oleates and small cations.

Bulk compounds of rare earth and transition metals are discussed in the section Introduction. After a presentation of their main properties and applications, their structures are presented and their syntheses are discussed. The section Bulk Materials and Their Main Applications is dedicated to the growing field of nanoscaled metal oxysulfides. Synthesis and applications of lanthanide-based nanoparticles are more mature and are discussed first. Then, works on transition-metal based nanoparticles are presented and discussed. Altogether, this review highlights the opportunities offered by metal oxysulfides for application in a range of technological fields, in relation with the most advanced synthetic routes and characterization techniques.

Abstract: International audience; Capping ligands play an important role in the chemistry of nanoparticles synthesized with organic surfactants. This is relevant to a number of device applications where heating may cause major modifications of crystalline nanoparticles including amorphization, surface rearrangements or sintering. Ultrathin monodisperse Ln2O2Sx oxysulfide nanoparticles (Ln=lanthanide) obtained in a mixture of oleylamine, oleic acid and 1‐octadecene show promising luminescence and light absorption properties. In view of applications, one open question concerns the thermal behavior and the role of the ligands on the thermal reactivity of the nanoparticles. In this report, we show that the thermal stability of Gd2O2Sx nanocrystals is limited because of their non‐stoichiometric composition and strongly depends on the annealing atmosphere. The sintering temperature of the nanoparticles is lower in air than in inert atmosphere because of a rapid degradation of the ligands. Annealing the nanoparticles in air enables removing the ligands without altering the nanocrystals structure. The decomposition of the Gd2O2Sx nanocrystals in inert atmosphere exhibits a complex multi‐step behavior that was precisely modeled. This work gives a comprehensive description of the stability conditions of lanthanide oxysulfide nanoparticles. It establishes the conditions for their practical use and opens the way to major improvements of the surface activity of Ln2O2S nanoparticles and related nanocrystals.

Abstract: International audience; Among the inorganic compounds, many oxides and sulfides are known to be semiconductors. At the crossroads of these two families, oxysulfide MxOySz compounds were much less investigated because they are scarce in nature and complex to synthesize. Amongst them, lanthanide oxysulfide Ln2O2S (Ln = lanthanide) are indirect bandgap semiconductors, with wide gaps, except Ce2O2S. (Gd,Ce)2O2S anisotropic nanoparticles with hexagonal structure were obtained over the whole composition range and exhibit colors varying from white to brown with increasing Ce concentration. Bandgap engineering is thus possible, from 4.7 eV for Gd2O2S, to 2.1 eV for Gd0.6Ce1.4O2S, while the structure is preserved with a slight lattice expansion. Surprisingly, due to the limited thickness of the lamellar nanoparticles, the bandgap of the nanoparticles is direct as validated by density functional theory on slabs. The fine control of the bandgap over a wide range, solely triggered by the cation ratio, is rarely described in the literature and highly promising for further development of this class of compounds. We propose a multi-regime mechanism to rationalize the bandgap engineering over the whole composition range. This should inspire the design of other bimetallic nanoscaled compounds, in particular in the field of visible light photocatalysis.

Abstract: International audience; N‐Heterocyclic carbene(NHC)‐stabilized copper nanoparticles are synthesized using a NHC‐borane and mesitylcopper(I) in thermal conditions (refluxing toluene for 2.5 h). Nanoparticles (NPs) with a size distribution of 11.6 ± 1.8 nm were obtained. The interaction between Cu NPs and NHC ligands was probed by XPS, showing the covalent binding of the NHC to the surface of the nanoparticles. Mechanistic studies suggest that the NHC‐borane plays two roles: contributing to the reduction of [CuMes]2 to release Cu0 species and providing NHC ligands to stabilize the copper nanoparticles

Abstract: International audience; Magnéli phases TinO2n-1 (3 < n ≤ 10) are mixed Ti 4+ /Ti 3+ oxides with high electrical conductivity. When used for water remediation or electrochemical energy storage and conversion, they are nanostructured and exposed to various environments. Therefore, understanding their surface reactivity is of prime importance. Such studies have been hindered by carbon contamination from syntheses. Herein we address this synthetic and characterization challenge through a new approach towards 50 nm carbon-free Ti4O7 and Ti6O11 nanoparticles. To do so, we take advantage of the different reactivities of rutile and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles versus H2, to use the former as precursors of TinO2n-1 and the latter as diluting agents. This approach is combined to silica templating in order to restrain particles growth. The surface reactivity of the Magnéli nanoparticles under different atmospheres was then evaluated quantitatively with synchrotron radiation-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, highlighting oxidized surfaces with lower conductivity than the core. This finding sheds a new light on the charge transfer occuring in these materials.

Abstract: For 100 years, IUPAC has supported chemists worldwide in all facets of their craft: industrial development, academic research, teaching, and many more. Mindful of nurturing its future leaders, since 2020 the Union ensured the attendance of the younger generation of chemists at the General Assembly and Congress in part through their “Young Observers” program [1]. It provides an opportunity for scientists below 40 to acquaint themselves with the work of the Divisions and Committees. The IUPAC Congress, which attracts several thousand attendees every two years, was not finely tuned to the expectations and contributions of the rising generation of chemists. However, the paradigm has begun to change. For the 47th Congress organized in Paris, France, 5-12 July 2019, the scientific executive committee, chaired by Clément Sanchez, enthusiastically received the proposal from a team of young chemists to build a “Young Chemists Symposium”, organized by younger chemists for the benefit of all the attendees.

Abstract: International audience; Bimetallic nanoparticles are widely studied, for example in catalysis. However, possible restructuring in the environment of use, such as segregation or alloying, may occur. Taken individually, state‐of‐the‐art analytical tools fail to give an overall picture of these transformations. This study combines an ensemble analysis (near‐ambient‐pressure X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy) with a local analysis (environmental transmission electron microscopy) to provide an in situ description of the restructuring of core–shell nickel‐cobalt nanoparticles exposed to cycles of reduction and oxidation. It reveals a partial surface alloying accompanied by fragmentation of the shell into smaller clusters, which is not reversible. Beyond this case study, the methodology proposed here should be applicable in a broad range of studies dealing with the reactivity of mono‐ or bi‐metallic metal nanoparticles.

Abstract: International audience; In situ techniques of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to investigate the thermal stability of Ni−Co core−shell nanoparticles (NPs). The morphological, structural, and chemical changes involved in the core− shell reconfiguration were studied during in situ annealing through simultaneous imaging and acquisition of elemental maps in the TEM, and acquisition of O 1s, Ni 3p, and Co 3p XP spectra. The core−shell reconfiguration occurred in a stepwise process of surface oxide removal and metal segregation. Reduction of the stabilizing surface oxide occurred from 320 to 440°C, initiating the core−shell reconfiguration. Above 440°C, the core−shell structure was disrupted through Ni migration from the core to the shell. This resulted in the formation of a homogeneous Ni−Co mixed alloy at 600°C. This study provides a mechanistic description of the alteration in the core−shell structures of NPs under vacuum conditions and increasing annealing temperature, which is crucial for understanding these technologically important materials.

Abstract: Interlayer silylation of layered sodium octosilicate (Na-Oct) with various organoalkoxysilanes was conducted using hexadecyltrimethylammonium ion-exchanged layered octosilicate (C16TMA-Oct) as an intermediate in the presence or absence of tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF). The degree of silylation was increased by adding TBAF. It is suggested that F- ions perform a nucleophilic attack on the alkoxysilanes, which promotes the silylation reaction. C16TMA-Oct was silylated with octyltriethoxysilane (C8TES) or 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTES) to compare the reactivity of the two organoalkoxysilanes in the presence or absence of TBAF. A higher degree of silylation of C16TMA-Oct was observed with MPTES, suggesting the higher accessibility of this silylating agent into the interlayer polar region of C16TMA-Oct. Abstract: International audience; Designing well-defined nanoparticles and nanoalloys is a tremendous way to achieve in-depth understanding of their intrinsic properties. In particular, structure and composition of the core and the surface of nanoalloys can be investigated by a combination of state-of-the-art in situ microscopy and spectroscopy. These nanoalloys represent a playground to establish structure-properties relationships within the nano-matter. They provide a much needed understanding of the distribution of each element within the nanoparticles, depending on the environment (gaseous atmosphere, temperature, etc.). This distribution may evolve over time. Lighter elements, such as phosphorus, are critical to the reactivity of the nanoparticle's surface in reactions such as CO or CO 2 hydrogenation. Here, the rational design of nanoalloys will be discussed (reactants choice, composition control), in relation with their surface state. Consequences on heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic reactions, as well as for energy storage and conversion, will be illustrated through examples.

In this study we investigate hydride-assisted reduction reactions with special focus on the structural evolution of copper nanoparticles in the presence of phosphine and nitrogen-based ligands. These compounds are commonly used as stabilizing agents, therefore are important in the context of other catalytic reactions as well. In particular, we investigate the case of tri-n-butylphosphine. Our findings show that ultrasmall nano-objects are formed as key intermediates to produce catalytically active species in the hydrosilylation of benzaldehyde into the corresponding silyl alcohol. Moreover, we found that the strength of the hydride donor is essential for the formation of the active catalysts. Therefore, this work unveils the previously overlooked high sensitivity of copper nanoparticles toward coordinating ligands in the context of catalysis.

Abstract: Tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP) is used widely as a phosphorating agent to yield metal phosphide nanocatalysts, which are receiving intense attention because of their high performance in both electrochemical and hydrotreatment catalytic processes, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction and the hydrodesulfurization reaction. We used in situ ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the formation of nickel phosphide on the surface of a nickel foil at temperatures close to those employed to form nickel phosphide nanoparticles in the colloidal route. We showed that the onset of phosphorus insertion into nickel occurs at as low as 150 °C, which is much lower than that reported previously (>210 °C). Moreover, the formation of sp2 carbon was observed on the surface as the consequence of TOP alkyl chain decomposition. These findings provide new insights into the surface chemistry of metal phosphide nanoparticles, which are increasingly employed in several fields of catalysis. Our results demonstrate that even below 150 °C, significant phosphorus and carbon incorporation can occur during metal nanoparticle syntheses if TOP is employed as the stabilizing agent.

Abstract: International audience; Lanthanide oxysulfide nanoparticles have recently attracted interest in view of their potential applications, such as lighting devices and MRI contrast agents, which requires a good stability in air and a controlled surface. In order to address these issues, in this work, air-sensitive Ce2O2S nanoparticles of hexagonal shape were successfully prepared and characterized under inert conditions. Bimetallic Gd2(1–y)Ce2yO2S nanoparticles of similar shape and size were also synthesized for the whole composition range (y from 0 to 1). X-ray diffraction structural data are found to follow Vegard’s law up to y = 0.4, which is attributed to the loss of stability in air of Ce-rich nanocrystals beyond this threshold. This picture is supported by X-ray absorption spectra taken at the S K-edge and Ce L3-edge that show the partial oxidation of sulfide species and of CeIII to CeIV in the presence of air or water. A complementary near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study shows that at least two types of oxidized sulfur species form on the nanoparticle surface. Even in Gd2O2S nanoparticles that are generally considered to be air-stable, we found that sulfide ions are partially oxidized to sulfate in air. These results unveil the physicochemical mechanisms responsible for the surface reactivity of lanthanide oxysulfides nanoparticles in air.

Abstract: © 2016 American Chemical Society. Ruthenium catalysts supported on TiO2 have been shown to have competitive activity and selectivity for the methanation of CO2. In particular, a catalyst using preformed RuO2 nanoparticles deposited on a TiO2 support showed competitive performances in a previous study. In this work, ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to determine the chemical state of this catalyst under reaction conditions. The active state of ruthenium was found to be the metallic one. Surface adsorbates were monitored in the steady state, and CHx species were found to be favored over adsorbed carbon monoxide at increasing temperatures.

Abstract: International audience; The interplay between crystallization and phosphorus diffusion in the versatile synthesis of metal phosphide nanoparticles from well-defined metal nanoparticles is studied by using a favorable "P(0)" source for mechanistic studies: white phosphorus. In this study, the reaction of Ni, Fe, Pd, and Cu nanoparticles with P 4 was quantitative even at relatively low temperatures thanks to the high reactivity of this soluble "P" source. Intermediate amorphous alloys could be identified for the first time in the case of Fe and Pd, while the quantitative character of the reaction provided a selective and controlled access to Pd 5 P 4 versus PdP 2 and Cu 3 P versus CuP 2. Morphological evolution of the nanoparticles with temperature and M/P stoichiometry was also discussed and provided new insights in the kinetics of the reaction in each case. Hollow Ni 2 P and FeP nanoparticles were finally obtained while the particularly high stability of the amorphous plain Pd 3 P nanoparticles was uncovered.

Abstract: A comparative study of the coordination modes of a (thiophosphinoyl)(trimethylsilyl)methanide (1–·Li+) and bis(thiophosphinoyl)methanide (2–·Li+) ligand with RhI was carried out. Several complexes were synthesized and characterized. For 1–·Li+, C~S coordination is forced, whereas for 2–·Li+, S~S and C~S coordination can be achieved. In one case, a dynamic equilibrium between these two modes of coordination was observed. DFT calculations were carried out to rationalize this phenomenon and the stability of the methanide compounds.

The procedure is versatile and readily yields TiC, VC, Mo2C and W2C nanoparticles on different types of carbons. The reaction is initiated at room temperature and proceeds within seconds. This novel synthetic route paves the way for a large variety of metal carbide–carbon nanocomposites that may be implemented in emerging nanotechnology fields.

Abstract: International audience; Research on nanomaterials and nanostructured materials is burgeoning because their numerous and versatile applications contribute to solve societal needs in the domain of medicine, energy, environment and STICs. Optimizing their properties requires in-depth analysis of their structural, morphological and chemical features at the nanoscale. In a transmission electron microscope (TEM), combining tomography with electron energy loss spectroscopy and high-magnification imaging in high-angle annular dark-field mode provides access to all features of the same object. Today, TEM experiments in three dimensions are paramount to solve tough structural problems associated with nanoscale matter. This approach allowed a thorough morphological description of silica fibers. Moreover, quantitative analysis of the mesoporous network of binary metal oxide prepared by template-assisted spray-drying was performed, and the homogeneity of amino functionalized metal-organic frameworks was assessed. Besides, the morphology and internal structure of metal phosphide nanoparticles was deciphered, providing a milestone for understanding phase segregation at the nanoscale. By extrapolating to larger classes of materials, from soft matter to hard metals and/or ceramics, this approach allows probing small volumes and uncovering materials characteristics and properties at two or three dimensions. Altogether, this feature article aims at providing (nano) materials scientists with a representative set of examples that illustrates the capabilities of modern TEM and tomography, which can be transposed to their own research.

Abstract: International audience; Bimetallic nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are interesting for the development of selective catalysts in reactions such as the reduction of CO2 by H2 to form hydrocarbons. Here the synthesis of Ni–Co NPs is studied, and the morphological and structural changes resulting from their activation (via oxidation/reduction cycles), and from their operation under reaction conditions, are presented. Using ambient‐pressure X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, it is found that the initial core–shell structure evolves to form a surface alloy due to nickel migration from the core. Interestingly, the core consists of a Ni‐rich single crystal and a void with sharp interfaces. Residual phosphorous species, coming from the ligands used for synthesis, are found initially concentrated in the NP core, which later diffuse to the surface.

Abstract: International audience; We present a study of the structure and reactivity of Ru nanoparticles of different sizes (1.3, 1.9, and 3.1 nm) for CO hydrogenation using gas-phase nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. In addition, the nanoparticles were characterized under reaction mixtures in situ by ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We found that during reaction the Ru is in the metallic state and that the diphosphine ligands [bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb)] on the surface of 1.9 and 3.1 nm nanoparticles not only act as capping and protecting agents but also stay on the surface during reaction and improve their activity and selectivity toward C 2 −C 4 hydrocarbons.

Its interaction with a number of metal surfaces is at the heart of major processes, such as Fischer-Tropsch synthesis or fuel-cell optimization. Recent works, coupling structural and nanoscale in situ analytic tools have highlighted the ability of metal surfaces and nanoparticles to undergo restructuring after exposure to CO under fairly mild conditions, generating nanostructures. This Minireview proposes a brief overview of recent examples of such nanostructuring, which leads to a discussion about the driving force in reversible and non-reversible situations.
