1. Sustainability of Artemisia umbelliformis gathering in the wild: An integration of ecological conditions and harvesting exposure

Abstract

Harvesting of wild plants is a traditional practice that is sustainable if the plant populations reproduce and persist. The génépi, Artemisia umbelliformis, occurs on crests and summits in the Alps, and is harvested mainly by amateurs. However, little is known about the ecology of this species and the practice of harvesting has received little scientific attention. Here we assess the sustainability of génépi harvesting through an integrative approach combining: (1) the quantification of spatial ecological variation across the distribution of A. umbelliformis in the southern Alps and (2) the examination of the social-ecological parameters that modulate the intensity of harvesting practices. We showed that topographic roughness is important for the presence of the species at a 25‑m resolution, while its cover at a 1‑m resolution is mainly influenced by space availability (with a fine‑grained stony substrate and limited vegetal cover). Our results show how the amateur activity of harvesting depends on resource availability, sitehiking attractiveness, and to a lesser extent the accessibility of the harvesting site. More precisely, harvesting intensity is more closely correlated with resource availability at the landscape scale than at the harvesting site scale, with a stronger importance of plant density in a large zone (500 m and 1 km buffers) than local density in a given site. Finally, we map both the potential ecological sensitivity of A. umbelliformis and its exposure to harvesting to produce an integrated ecological risk assessment for the conservation of this species. This study illustrates how the concept of the niche can be more precisely recognised by integrating both human and ecological dimensions, particularly when dealing with the sustainability of wild plant harvesting.

Abstract

Abstract Decades of theory and scholarship on the concept of human well‐being have informed a proliferation of approaches to assess well‐being and support public policy aimed at sustainability and improving quality of life. Human well‐being is multidimensional, and well‐being emerges when the dimensions and interrelationships interact as a system. In this paper, we illuminate two crucial components of well‐being that are often excluded from policy because of their relative difficulty to measure and manage: equity and interrelationships between humans and the environment. We use a mixed‐methods approach to review and summarize progress to date in developing well‐being constructs (including frameworks and methods) that address these two components. Well‐being frameworks that do not consider the environment, or interrelationships between people and their environment, are not truly measuring well‐being in all its dimensions. Use of equity lenses to assess well‐being frameworks aligns with increasing efforts to more holistically characterize well‐being and to guide sustainability management in ethical and equitable ways. Based on the findings of our review, we identify several pathways forward for the development and implementation of well‐being frameworks that can inform efforts to leverage well‐being for public policy.

Abstract

Agrobiodiversity is a promising nature-based solution in the pursuit of sustainable agriculture. In wine-growing systems, commercial pressure and varietal regulations have narrowed agrobiodiversity in vineyards despite higher diversity being an important buffer against the effects of climate change. If drivers of grape diversity change are well-understood at national to global scales, little is known about the local, past or anticipated trajectories that drive agrobiodiversity dynamics depending on growers’ cultural values, practices and choices. We combined quantitative agricultural census data and qualitative ethnographic approaches to characterise changes in the diversity of grape varieties from 1960 to 2020 at the communal and vineyard levels in a French wine-growing region, and to decipher the drivers of change. We highlight that vineyards have drastically changed in 60 years, with a decline in planted area and in farm number. We outline that despite a loss of varietal richness across both vineyard and communal scales, varietal richness remains high and evenness have increased across geographic scales in 2020. Ethnographic field observations emphasize that growers account for external drivers (e.g., market changes, regulation and policy, technology, environmental), but also cultural values when they choose which grape varieties to plant. Grape diversity was maintained despite market integration as an insurance to spread production risk, mitigate market volatility and address environmental uncertainties. Securing livelihoods in the midst of market changes has been a major concern for growers over the last six decades and remains so. Despite a pessimistic future vision of the vineyard shared by most growers, the Gaillac region has a cultural heritage that values diversity and that thereby supports adaptation to climate change. We expect that environmental factors may play a more important role in grape selection and planting sites in the future under the influence of climate change and pesticide reduction policies. In order to expand individual initiatives resulting in diversified grape selection, growers need to be better connected with stakeholders at a variety of institutional levels.

4. Biocultural Drivers Responsible for the Occurrence of a Cassava Bacterial Pathogen in Small-Scale Farms of Colombian Caribbean

Abstract

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a primary crop for food security of millions of people worldwide. In Colombia, the Caribbean region contributes about half of the national cassava production, despite major socioeconomic constraints such as unequal land property, omnipresence of middlemen, low and unstable prices, armed conflict, climate change and phytosanitary issues. Among the latter is Cassava Bacterial Blight (CBB), a disease caused by the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. manihotis (Xpm) that leads to irreversible damage to plants, impeding growth and productivity. In 2016, we analyzed the role of sociocultural and agricultural practices on CBB prevalence in small-scale fields of a village of the Colombian Caribbean region, where farmers live almost exclusively from the sale of their cassava production. Semi-structured interviews (48) were conducted with all farmers who cultivated cassava to document individual sociodemographic characteristics, cassava farming practices, and perceptions about CBB occurrence. Cassava Bacterial Blight was diagnosed in the field and the presence of Xpm was further confirmed upon laboratory analysis of collected diseased leaf samples. Our data show that (i) according to the risks perceived by farmers, CBB is the main disease affecting cassava crops in the village and it could indeed be detected in about half of the fields visited; (ii) CBB occurrence depends strongly on land property issues, likely because of an inadequate phytosanitary control during acquisition of cuttings when farmers are forced to rent the land; and (iii) there is a strong positive correlation between the use of commercial fertilizers and the occurrence of CBB in the village of Villa López.

Abstract

Abstract Resource management and conservation interventions are increasingly embracing social–ecological systems (SES) concepts. While SES frameworks recognize the connectedness of humans and nature, many fail to acknowledge the complex role of sociocultural factors in influencing people's interactions with the environment. As such, when indicators in SES frameworks are used to measure the social dimension, easy to measure, socioeconomic indicators are the norms, while more complex social and cultural indicators are rare. To develop meaningful indicators of resilience in SES we need to understand local definitions of resilience. In this paper we describe methods used in a biocultural approach to illuminate sociocultural factors that Pacific Islanders identify as important for resilient communities. We focus specifically on two dimensions of sociocultural factors, “Connectedness to People and Place” and “Indigenous and local knowledges, skills, practices, values and worldviews,” which relate to many interventions, but are not usually monitored. We offer examples of indicators that may be appropriate to measure under these dimensions. Increased use of biocultural indicators will bring additional insight on the types and combinations of indicators that work best in given contexts.

6. Pond fishing in the Congolese cuvette: a story of fishermen, animals, and water spirits

Abstract

In the Congo basin, fishing activities are a major source of protein and of income for many households. Fishermen combine a broad range of fishing methods adapted to the seasonality of the floodplain and the particular features of its habitats. Pond fishing is a collective fishing method that consists in emptying pools still flooded during the low-water season in the otherwise dry floodplain in order to capture the fish that have sought shelter there. This practice is widespread in central Africa but has rarely been described in detail. Studies often depict this activity as quite simple and practiced by groups of women only. Our study, conducted in the region of Mossaka, in Congo Republic, reveals another reality. We found that pond fishing engages dozens of men, women and children working together and that this activity is based on a range of skills and know-how. Pond fishing is one of the most productive and socially valued fishing methods in the region. Like the technical dimensions of pond fishing, its social and symbolic dimensions are also little described in literature on the subject. Because pond ownership is a source of income and prestige, pond fishing crystallizes social competition. Yet, the collective nature of this fishery enhances alliances and social networks. Pond fishing is also rooted in beliefs about multiple relationships between humans, fish, crocodiles, and supernatural forces inhabiting the ponds. Pond fishing, like collective fishing as a whole, has been in decline for the last 50 years. Fishermen nowadays engage preferentially in individual techniques. We examine whether these individual fishing methods allow maintenance of the social and cultural functions of inland fisheries.

Abstract

Diverse and productive ecosystems and human well-being are too often considered opposing targets. This stems mainly from nature being perceived as separate from culture, which results in resilience indicators that focus predominantly on either ecosystems or humans, and that overlook the interplay between the two. Meanwhile, global targets for biodiversity conservation and human well-being have yet to be satisfactorily achieved. We believe that in order to develop effective, culturally appropriate, and equitable conservation strategies that ensure social-ecological resilience, conservation planners and practitioners must conceive of human and ecological well-beings as an interrelated system. By giving nature a voice, and by viewing nature and people as an undifferentiated whole, some indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC) have philosophical bases for achieving well-being for both humans and nature. Biocultural approaches to conservation ground management in local knowledges, practices, and ontologies. These approaches encompass both the biological and cultural aspects of a system, address complex relationships and feedbacks within human and ecological well-being, and offer flexible frameworks that facilitate synthesis across different metrics, knowledge systems, and ontologies. The process of developing indicators of resilience with a biocultural approach could help (1) overcome the human-nature dichotomy that often makes global approaches incompatible with local approaches by integrating local peoples' diverse forms of relating to nature, (2) reflect two-way feedbacks between people and their environment by focusing on processes, not just final states, and (3) define, measure, and monitor ecological and human well-being as a whole. It can also facilitate dialog between IPLCs and global decision-makers who are disconnected from local realities, and between people from a diversity of disciplinary, ontological, and professional backgrounds.

8. Effects of farmer social status and plant biocultural value on seed circulation networks in Vanuatu

Abstract

Seed circulation among farmers, which is embedded in composite social networks, is a key process in the dynamics of seed systems that shape crop diversity. We analyzed the daily circulation of biological objects, i.e., cultivated plants (31 species, 284 landraces), within a community of first-generation migrants (16 households, 30 persons) living on the island of Vanua Lava in the South Pacific archipelago nation of Vanuatu. By combining participant observation, ethnobiological inventories, and social network analysis, we investigated how farmer social status and plant biocultural value affect plant circulation. Plant biocultural value was estimated by referring to their local classification according to uses, cultivation practices, growing environments, and biological properties. An aggregate plant circulation network (577 events) and three subnetworks (i.e., for starchy, side dish, or snack food categories) sharing the same 30 nodes were analyzed using exponential random graph models. Evidence that farmer social status influences the patterns of plant circulation was found through the distribution of structural parameters of the network, including: dyadic reciprocity; in-degree, out-degree, and their correlation; triadic cycling; and transitivity. At the scale of the aggregate network, direct or indirect reciprocity was not observed. Instead, a high out-degree (i.e., being a more frequent giver) and a negative correlation between in-degree and out-degree both confer prestige and reinforce hierarchy. These results suggest that some of the social dynamics of the Melanesian-type Big Man political system may persist, even though the system itself no longer exists in traditional form. Moreover, based on our comparative analysis of the three subnetworks, farmer social status appears to influence greatly the circulation of plants with high biocultural value while having little influence on plants with low biocultural value. Farmer social status and plant biocultural value (following their local classification) are important factors for understanding the social rules shaping seed circulation.

El bienestar humano es multidimensional y el bienestar surge cuando las dimensiones e interrelaciones interactúan como un sistema. En este trabajo, iluminamos dos componentes fundamentales del bienestar que frecuentemente son excluidos de políticas debido a su relativa dificultad para medir y gestionar: la equidad y las interrelaciones entre las personas y el medio ambiente. Usamos métodos mixtos para revisar y resumir el progreso hasta la fecha en el desarrollo de construcciones de bienestar (incluyendo marcos y métodos) que abordan estos dos componentes. Estructuras de bienestar que no consideran el medio ambiente, o interrelaciones entre las personas y su entorno, no están midiendo el bienestar en todas sus dimensiones. El uso de enfoques de equidad para evaluar los marcos de bienestar es consistente con el aumento en esfuerzos para caracterizar más holísticamente el bienestar y para orientar la gestión de la sustentabilidad de forma ética y equitativa. Le bien-être humain est multidimensionnel; il est favorisé par l’interaction entre ses multiples dimensions qui constituent un système. Dans cet article, nous soulignons deux composantes cruciales du bien-être qui sont souvent exclues des politiques publiques en raison de leur relative difficulté à mesurer et à gérer: l'équité et les relations entre les humains et l’environnement. Nous utilisons des méthodes mixtes pour inventorier et résumer les progrès réalisés à ce jour dans le développement et l’application des cadres conceptuels du bien-être (y compris des cadres d’analyse et des méthodes) qui traitent de ces deux composantes. Les cadres d’analyse sur le bien-être qui ne tiennent pas compte de l'environnement ou des relations entre les humains et l’environnement, ne mesurent pas le bien-être dans toutes ses dimensions. L’adoption de l’équité dans les méthodes d’évaluation du bien-être, permet de caractériser plus holistiquement la notion de bien-être et ainsi de développer une approche de la durabilité plus éthique et équitable. Abstract

International audience; Biodiversity-based agriculture is the main form of agriculture practiced by smallholder farmers, who produce half the world's food, especially in the Global South. This form of agriculture relies on planned biodiversity intentionally managed by farmers and on the associated biodiversity that spontaneously colonizes the agroecosystem. In recent decades, there have been increasing calls from researchers and society to support biodiversity-based agriculture as an alternative paradigm to today's industrial agriculture. Building adapted governance and management systems for enhancing farmers' access to agrobiodiversity is a key challenge for the development of biodiversity-based agriculture. To achieve this, a better understanding of how farmer's access agrobiodiversity is needed, and in particular, how this access is affected by interactions between farmers and with institutions, i.e., social networks. In this article, we first review the literature on the role of social networks in farmers' access to agrobiodiversity, in the form of crop diversity and associated biodiversity, and the related knowledge to manage this diversity. This review points at a major knowledge gap concerning how the composition and structure of these networks affect farmers' access to agrobiodiversity. Then, we review literature on social-ecological networks to identify how this framework developed for environmental management could contribute in getting a better understanding of the role of social networks' structure and composition in farmers' access to agrobiodiversity. Based on this review, we propose a social-ecological network framework dedicated to crop diversity. Finally, we present potential applications of this framework to develop new participatory approaches for agrobiodiversity management and governance, adapted to biodiversity-based agriculture.

Abstract

Unidad de excelencia María de Maeztu CEX2019-000940-M Homogenization of crop portfolios from the field to the global scale is raising concerns about agricultural adaptation to climate change. Assessing whether such trends threaten farmers' long-term adaptive capacity requires a thorough understanding of changes in their crop portfolios, identification of the drivers of change, and the implications such changes have for local nutrition and food production. We reviewed the available literature on farmers' reports of climate-driven crop changes. Small-scale farmers tend to adopt water-demanding crops, even in areas where models predict that reduced rainfall will reduce yields. The adoption of horticultural cash-crops combined with the abandonment of subsistence cereals modifies farmers' nutritional inputs in terms of calories and nutrients, potentially undermining their food security. Farmers' knowledge contributes to understand trends in crop diversity and support the design of strategies for adaptation to climate change.

Abstract

Achieving sustainable development globally requires multilevel and interdisciplinary efforts and perspectives. Global goals shape priorities and actions at multiple scales, creating cascading impacts realized at the local level through the direction of financial resources and implementation of programs intended to achieve progress towards these metrics. We explore ways to localize global goals to best support human well-being and environmental health by systematically comparing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with regionally-derived well-being dimensions that encompass components of social–ecological resilience across the Pacific Islands. Our research shows that, in the context of the Pacific, there are overlaps but also significant gaps between regional conceptions of well-being and the globally-derived SDGs. Some dimensions, related to human health and access to infrastructure and finances, are well represented in the SDGs. Other dimensions of high importance when localizing perspectives of well-being, such as those regarding connections between and across people and place and Indigenous and local knowledge, are not. Furthermore, internationally generated indicators may result in trade-offs and measurement challenges in local contexts. Creating space for place-based values in global sustainability planning aligns with international calls for transformational changes needed to achieve global goals. We identify challenges in applying SDG indicators at the local level and provide lessons learned to foster equitable and holistic approaches and outcomes for sustainability.

Based on ethnoecological fieldwork , in this paper we examine how people living in the cuvette centrale of the Congo basin have adopted flood-recession agriculture on islands in the Congo River, taking advantage of a secular shift since the 1980s in the hydrological regime of the Congo River. Analyses of the hydrological data reveal that this shift decreased flood risk and significantly extended the growing season on the islands, long enough to enable cultivation of fast-maturing varieties of manioc and other crops. Flood-recession farming on islands in the river is today not only an important source of food, but also a source of income for women, who are primarily responsible for seasonal cultivation of fields during the low-water season. Hydrological changes alone are insufficient to explain the adoption of the new agricultural practice; adoption also arose as a result of dynamic interactions among river fishing, trading, and broader socioeconomic forces. Climate-change models project an increased frequency of extreme floods. Our results suggest that this change may limit island cultivation in the future. More generally, our findings point to the importance of looking beyond single-factor, solely environmental explanations in studies of climate-change adaptation

Abstract

This chapter introduces the basic principles of network analysis and provides an overview of the main types of questions that can be answered in the field of ecological and social systems studies. Social interactions between actors affect ecosystem dynamics via their role in the circulation of biological resources and of the knowledge associated with their management. The application of network analysis methods to the study of these two main types of mechanisms is illustrated by three case studies whose results have been published and analyzed in the articles by Thomas and Caillon, Labeyrie et al., and Salpeteur et al. These examples highlight the need to associate network analysis with qualitative approaches, which are essential to understand the social rules and norms regulating interactions between individuals, and are also necessary to understand how these interactions fit into the general system of interactions in the studied social systems.

Abstract

International audience; One adaptation for farming wetlands is constructing raised fields (RF), i.e., elevated earth structures. Studies of RF agriculture have focused mostly on the vestiges of RF that were cultivated by pre-Columbian populations in the Americas. Ironically, whereas RF agriculture is still practiced nowadays in many parts of the world, including the Congo Basin, these actively farmed RF have received scant attention. Yet, studying how RF function today can shed new light on ongoing debates about pre-Columbian RF agriculture. Also, in a context of climate change and widespread degradation of wetlands, the study of RF agriculture can help us evaluate its potential as part of an environmentally sustainable use of wetlands. We carried out an ethnoecological study of RF agriculture combining qualitative and quantitative methods over a total of eight months' fieldwork in the Congo Basin. We found that RF show great diversity in size and shape and perform several functions. Incorporation of grasses such as green manure, allows RF to produce high yields, and RF agriculture decreases flooding risk. However, it is labor-intensive and is likely always only one component of a multi-activity subsistence system, in which fishing plays a great role, that is both resilient and sustainable.

Abstract

Monitoring and evaluation are central to ensuring that innovative, multi-scale, and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability are effective. The development of relevant indicators for local sustainable management outcomes, and the ability to link these to broader national and international policy targets, are key challenges for resource managers, policymakers, and scientists. Sets of indicators that capture both ecological and social-cultural factors, and the feedbacks between them, can underpin cross-scale linkages that help bridge local and global scale initiatives to increase resilience of both humans and ecosystems. Here we argue that biocultural approaches, in combination with methods for synthesizing across evidence from multiple sources, are critical to developing metrics that facilitate linkages across scales and dimensions. Biocultural approaches explicitly start with and build on local cultural perspectives — encompassing values, knowledges, and needs — and recognize feedbacks between ecosystems and human well-being. Adoption of these approaches can encourage exchange between local and global actors, and facilitate identification of crucial problems and solutions that are missing from many regional and international framings of sustainability. Resource managers, scientists, and policymakers need to be thoughtful about not only what kinds of indicators are measured, but also how indicators are designed, implemented, measured, and ultimately combined to evaluate resource use and well-being. We conclude by providing suggestions for translating between local and global indicator efforts.

International audience; n AbstrAct: Measuring progress toward sustainability goals is a multifaceted task. International , regional, and national organizations and agencies seek to promote resilience and capacity for adaptation at local levels. However, their measurement systems may be poorly aligned with local contexts, cultures, and needs. Understanding how to build effective, culturally grounded measurement systems is a fundamental step toward supporting adaptive management and resilience in the face of environmental, social, and economic change. To identify patterns and inform future efforts, we review seven case studies and one framework regarding the development of culturally grounded indicator sets. Additionally, we explore ways to bridge locally relevant indicators and those of use at national and international levels. The process of identifying and setting criteria for appropriate indicators of resilience in social-ecological systems needs further documentation , discussion, and refinement, particularly regarding capturing feedbacks between biological and social-cultural elements of systems. n Indigenous and other place-based, local communities increasingly face an assortment of externally codified development and sustainability goals, regional commitments, and national policies and actions that are designed, in part, to foster adaptation and resilience at the local level. Resilience refers to the capacity of a system to absorb shocks and disturbances and to catalyze renewal, adaptation, transformation, and innovation (Béneét al. 2013). Identifying and setting criteria for the underlying factors that confer resilience to a community are the first steps toward effectively aligning external sustainability-seeking processes, often associated with resourcing mechanisms, with locally relevant and locally embraced approaches to sustaining environmental health and community well-being in the face of environmental, social, and economic change (Fazey et al. 2011; Folke et al. 2003).

Abstract

In the Congo basin, fishing activities are a major source of protein and of income for many households. Fishermen combine a broad range of fishing methods adapted to the seasonality of the floodplain and the particular features of its habitats. Pond fishing is a collective fishing method that consists in emptying pools still flooded during the low-water season in the otherwise dry floodplain in order to capture the fish that have sought shelter there. This practice is widespread in central Africa but has rarely been described in detail. Studies often depict this activity as quite simple and practiced by groups of women only. Our study, conducted in the region of Mossaka, in Congo Republic, reveals another reality. We found that pond fishing engages dozens of men, women and children working together and that this activity is based on a range of skills and know-how. Pond fishing is one of the most productive and socially valued fishing methods in the region. Like the technical dimensions of pond fishing, its social and symbolic dimensions are also little described in literature on the subject. Because pond ownership is a source of income and prestige, pond fishing crystallizes social competition. Yet, the collective nature of this fishery enhances alliances and social networks. Pond fishing is also rooted in beliefs about multiple relationships between humans, fish, crocodiles, and supernatural forces inhabiting the ponds. Pond fishing, like collective fishing as a whole, has been in decline for the last 50 years. Fishermen nowadays engage preferentially in individual techniques. We examine whether these individual fishing methods allow maintenance of the social and cultural functions of inland fisheries. Dans le bassin du Congo, la pêche constitue une source majeure de protéines et de revenus pour de nombreux foyers. Les pêcheurs combinent une grande diversité de techniques de pêche, adaptées aux facteurs hydrologiques saisonniers et aux milieux prospectés. La pêche aux étangs est une technique de pêche collective qui consiste à écoper des mares d’eau dans la plaine d’inondation durant la saison des basses eaux, de manière à capturer les poissons qui s’y étaient réfugiés. Cette pratique, largement répandue en Afrique centrale, a rarement été décrite en détail. Les études dépeignent souvent cette activité comme une pêche relativement simple et exclusivement féminine. Notre étude, réalisée dans la région de Mossaka en République du Congo, montre une autre réalité. Dans cette région, la pêche aux étangs est pratiquée par plusieurs dizaines d’hommes, femmes et enfants travaillant ensemble, et nécessite de nombreux savoirs et savoir-faire. La pêche aux étangs est une des pêches les plus productives et les plus valorisées de cette région. Tout comme les dimensions techniques, les aspects sociaux et symboliques de la pêche aux étangs ont peu été décrits dans la littérature. Source de prestige et de richesse, la pêche aux étangs cristallise des rapports de compétition. Cependant, la nature collective de cette pêche favorise le renforcement de relations sociales d’alliances. Cette pêche est également ancrée dans des croyances mettant en jeu de nombreuses relations entre les pêcheurs, les poissons, les crocodiles et les génies habitant les étangs. La pêche aux étangs, à l’image des autres pêches collectives, est en déclin. Les pêcheurs favorisent aujourd’hui des techniques de pêche individuelles. Nous examinons si ces pratiques individuelles permettent de maintenir les fonctions sociales et culturelles des activités de pêche.

Abstract

In the Pacific, coastal communities have compensated for chronically low capacity of governments to manage fisheries by implementing local regulations in their marine tenure areas. In order to investigate the performance of community-based fisheries management (CBFM) in Vanuatu, trajectories and factors of change in CBFM systems since the 1990s were analysed. Focal group interviews were conducted in seven villages on Efate island in 2011 and supplemented by a review of supporting literature. Results reveal the increasing and excessive reliance of CBFM systems on external agencies that promoted overly complex management plans. Examination of trends in CBFM systems shows that community and national fishing rules that were highly acceptable by local societies were more likely to be enforced in the long run. In particular, the establishment of marine reserves was the most widespread and best enforced community rule for the purposes of conservation, ecotourism, and/or fisheries. Overall, the results challenge the current effectiveness of CBFM in achieving sustainability of reef fisheries in Vanuatu, and highlight the over-reliance on small marine reserves as a management tool. Community initiatives must be strengthened by new specific national regulations governing subsistence and commercial reef fisheries as part of a multi-scale co-management approach.

Abstract

International audience; Seed circulation among farmers, which is embedded in composite social networks, is a key process in the dynamics of seed systems that shape crop diversity. We analyzed the daily circulation of biological objects, i.e., cultivated plants (31 species, 284 landraces), within a community of first-generation migrants (16 households, 30 persons) living on the island of Vanua Lava in the South Pacific archipelago nation of Vanuatu. By combining participant observation, ethnobiological inventories, and social network analysis, we investigated how farmer social status and plant biocultural value affect plant circulation. Plant biocultural value was estimated by referring to their local classification according to uses, cultivation practices, growing environments, and biological properties. An aggregate plant circulation network (577 events) and three subnetworks (i.e., for starchy, side dish, or snack food categories) sharing the same 30 nodes were analyzed using exponential random graph models. Evidence that farmer social status influences the patterns of plant circulation was found through the distribution of structural parameters of the network, including: dyadic reciprocity; in-degree, out-degree, and their correlation; triadic cycling; and transitivity. At the scale of the aggregate network, direct or indirect reciprocity was not observed. Instead, a high out-degree (i.e., being a more frequent giver) and a negative correlation between in-degree and out-degree both confer prestige and reinforce hierarchy. These results suggest that some of the social dynamics of the Melanesian-type Big Man political system may persist, even though the system itself no longer exists in traditional form. Moreover, based on our comparative analysis of the three subnetworks, farmer social status appears to influence greatly the circulation of plants with high biocultural value while having little influence on plants with low biocultural value. Farmer social status and plant biocultural value (following their local classification) are important factors for understanding the social rules shaping seed circulation.

Le cocotier dans le village de Vetuboso (ile de Vanua Lava, Vanuatu, Pacifique Sud) presente tous les attributs pour etre classe parmi les objets socialement valorises. Present avant l’arrivee des premiers Hommes, cet arbre est en effet toujours associe aux mythes fondateurs et a une multitude d’usages tant materiels qu’immateriels. Il est pourtant presente a l’enqueteur comme l’arbre « des Blancs ». Par une approche culturelle, l’auteur tentera de comprendre ce changement de statut en analysant la place physique et sociale du cocotier au sein de son nouvel espace, la cocoteraie. Cette derniere peut etre qualifiee d’espace « de Blancs » dont ont ete herites les pratiques et le materiel biologique. Sa nouvelle fonction economique est percue comme une contrainte qui ne peut etre evitee, le coprah etant l’unique source de revenu. La cocoteraie est un espace « gourmand » empietant sur celui des jardins et de la foret ou vivent les esprits. Elle « capture » aussi definitivement l’espace au sein d’une famille sur plusieurs generations a cause de la longevite et de la multiplication des cocotiers. Le cocotier, objet social, est ainsi percu comme l’arbre « des Blancs » principalement pour son rapport au lieu. Pour revaloriser son image, il faut donc le sortir de son espace. Mais quelle valeur sociale les habitants de Vetuboso lui accorderont-ils si un jour le cocotier retrouve son lieu ?

Abstract

In a context of globalization, Article 8j. from the Convention on Biological Diversity recognizes the value of biodiversity and formalizes its mixed nature through its biological as well as cultural dimensions. This new definition raises questions more than it solves them. We demonstrate that national and international organizations, local communities, and even researchers from different disciplines (anthropology, botany or genetics) identify and evaluate biodiversity differently. The various stakeholder groups have developed an unavoidable social relation with multiple aspects of biodiversity that they relate to through their job or way of life. And therefore, they pursue various conservation purposes: the preservation of place’s memory through ancestral links, cultural diversity, phenotypic variability or evolutionary potential. Which disciplinary and ethical boundaries are these actors willing to compromise, in order to preserve biodiversity in the name of development? Which indicators should we choose to fulfil which goals? The contrasting examples of taro (a socially valued object, planted on taro pondfields inherited “from the ancestors”, linked to an important cultural diversity and to a narrow genetic-base) and coconut (a socially devalued object, cultivated in coconut plantations at the prompting of “the Whites” and genetically diverse despite few named types) demonstrate that same farmers from a village in Vanuatu (South Pacific) affirm traditional ecological knowledge though their management of taro, and still participate in a market economy by intensifying their crop of coconuts. Conservation and research programs should integrate ethical questions and political processes to reconcile systems of diversified values and representations.

À l’aide d’une posture à l’interface entre l’ethnobiologie et la géographie, nous démontrons comment les fleurs ornementales coupées peuvent faire le lien entre villes et campagnes, entre les villages producteurs et entre les différents agro‑écosystèmes existant le long du fleuve Amazone. Cette activité lucrative de vente de fleurs se traduit par un ajout d’activités et d’espèces, et non pas par une substitution ou une modification de la structure spatiale du système agricole traditionnel. La valorisation sociale des espèces est façonnée par l’espace où elles sont cultivées, par la nature fragile de leur matériel de propagation, et par leur vulnérabilité biologique. Rares et précieuses, les fleurs acquièrent aussi une valeur économique non négligeable. Cultiver de belles roses procure un statut social à l’agriculteur qui aime exposer ses savoir-faire hérités et transformés. By drawing on an approach at the intersection of ethnobiology and geography, we show how ornamental cut flowers effectively forge links between town and country, among producer villages, and between different agroecosystems found along the Amazon river, near Iquitos (Peru). This lucrative activity arose from the introduction of new farming practices and novel plant species, rather than by substitution or modification of the spatial structure of the traditional agricultural system. The social value of flower species is fashioned by the space where they are cultivated, by the fragile nature of their propagules, and by their biological vulnerability. Rare and precious, these flowers acquire a non-negligible economic value as well. The cultivation of beautiful roses begets a social stature to the farmer who wishes to demonstrate to others his or her inherited knowledge and know-how.

Abstract

Abstract

The importance of seed provisioning in food security and nutrition, agricultural development and rural livelihoods, and agrobiodiversity and germplasm conservation is well accepted by policy makers, practitioners and researchers. The role of farmer seed networks is less well understood and yet is central to debates on current issues ranging from seed sovereignty and rights for farmers to GMOs and the conservation of crop germplasm. In this paper we identify four common misconceptions regarding the nature and importance of farmer seed networks today. (1) Farmer seed networks are inefficient for seed dissemination. (2) Farmer seed networks are closed, conservative systems. (3) Farmer seed networks provide ready, egalitarian access to seed. (4) Farmer seed networks are destined to weaken and disappear. We challenge these misconceptions by drawing upon recent research findings and the authors’ collective field experience in studying farmer seed systems in Africa, Europe, Latin America and Oceania. Abstract

In this chapter, we develop new indicators and statistical tests to characterize patterns of crop diversity at local scales to better understand interactions between ecological and socio-cultural functions of agroecosystems. Farms, where a large number of crops (species or landraces) is grown, are known to contribute a large part of the locally available diversity of both rare and common crops but the role of farms with low diversity remains little understood: do they grow only common varieties—following a nestedness pattern typical of mutualistic networks in ecology—or do ‘crop–poor’ farmers also grow rare varieties? This question is pivotal in ongoing efforts to assess the local-scale contribution of small farms to global agrobiodiversity. We develop new network-based approaches to characterize the distribution of local crop diversity (species and infra-species) at the village level and to validate these approaches using meta-datasets from 10 countries. Our results highlight the sources of heterogeneity in crop diversity at the village level. We often identify two or more groups of farms based on their different levels of diversity. In some datasets, ‘crop–poor’ farms significantly contribute to the local crop diversity. Generally, we find that the distribution of crop diversity is more heterogeneous at the species than at the infra-species level. This analysis reveals the absence of a general pattern of crop diversity distribution, suggesting strong dependence on local agro-ecological and socio-cultural contexts. These different patterns of crop diversity distribution reflect an heterogeneity in farmers’ self-organized action in cultivating and maintaining local crop diversity, which ensures the adaptability of agroecosystems to global change.

Abstract

Afin de comprendre comment et pourquoi les agriculteurs choisissent leur portefeuille de cultivars de taros, une étude ethnobotanique a été menée sur l’île de Vanua Lava qui se distingue des autres îles Banks par ses tarodières, irriguées en alternance. Dans le village de Ve¯tuboso, le nalot (pudding) préparé à base de taros, dont les meilleurs sont cultivés dans les tarodières, scande tous les moments importants de la vie sociale. Les agriculteurs choisissent leur portefeuille de vingt cultivars parmi les quatre-vingt-seize présents dans le village, distingués selon onze critères morphologiques et nommés principalement en fonction de leur origine (reproduction sexuée, mutation somatique ou introduction). Sur un échantillon de douze agriculteurs, six cultivars qualifiés de communs (83 % des pieds de taros) sont choisis pour leurs atouts agronomiques et organoleptiques. À l’inverse, les quarante cultivars rares (8 % des pieds), piliers de la diversité, sont conservés à des fins sociales pour préserver un héritage familial ou une parcelle d’histoire mythique, pour se démarquer des autres et pour valoriser un produit d’échange. Sachant que seule la prise en compte exhaustive des parcelles permet de recenser l’ensemble des cultivars du village, c’est au final la multiplicité des stratégies des « collectionneurs », des « sélectionneurs » et des « conservateurs », qui dessine la richesse du patrimoine cultural du village et l’inscrit dans la logique de diversité culturelle propre aux sociétés mélanésiennes. An ethnobotanic research was realised to understand how and why farmers are choosing their cultivars’ portfolio in a village named Vêtuboso from Vanua Lava island, well-known for its irrigated pondfields. The nalot (pudding) prepared with taros which tastied and firmest ones are cultivated on pondfields is essential to each step of the social life. Farmers are choosing twenty cultivars among the ninety-six planted in the village that are distinguished thanks to eleven morphogical criteria and named according to their origin (sexual reproduction, somatic mutation and introduction). In a sample of twelve farmers, six of them called ‘‘common cultivars’’ (83 %of all planted taros) are selected because of their agronomic and organoleptic qualities. At reverse, forty rare cultivars (8 % of plants) are conserved for their social value to preserve a familial (heirloom) or mythic heritage, to be different from the other farmers, and/or to hold a valuable exchange product. To conserve the whole village’s diversity, all ponds have to be taken into account. Thus, it is the diversity of individual strategies, classified in ‘‘collectors’’, ‘‘selectors’’ and ‘‘conservators’’, that is responsible from the richness of the farming patrimonial, and that comes within the scope of cultural diversity’s logic, peculiar to Melanesian societies.

Abstract

International audience; The circulation of seed among farmers is central to agrobiodiversity conservation and dynamics. Agrobiodiversity, the diversity of agricultural systems from genes to varieties and crop species, from farming methods to landscape composition, is part of humanity’s cultural heritage. Whereas agrobiodiversity conservation has received much attention from researchers and policy makers over the last decades, the methods available to study the role of seed exchange networks in preserving crop biodiversity have only recently begun to be considered. In this overview, we present key concepts, methods, and challenges to better understand seed exchange networks so as to improve the chances that traditional crop varieties (landraces) will be preserved and used sustainably around the world. The available literature suggests that there is insufficient knowledge about the social, cultural, and methodological dimensions of environmental change, including how seed exchange networks will cope with changes in climates, socio-economic factors, and family structures that have supported seed exchange systems to date. Methods available to study the role of seed exchange networks in the preservation and adaptation of crop specific and genetic diversity range from meta-analysis to modelling, from participatory approaches to the development of bio-indicators, from genetic to biogeographical studies, from anthropological and ethnographic research to the use of network theory. We advocate a diversity of approaches, so as to foster the creation of robust and policy-relevant knowledge. Open challenges in the study of the role of seed exchange networks in biodiversity conservation include the development of methods to (i) enhance farmers’ participation to decision-making in agro-ecosystems, (ii) integrate ex situ and in situ approaches, (iii) achieve interdisciplinary research collaboration between social and natural scientists, and (iv) use network analysis as a conceptual framework to bridge boundaries among researchers, farmers and policy makers, as well as other stakeholders.

Abstract

Si l’on considere qu’un patrimoine est constitue d’entites (materielles ou non) transmises entre generations de personnes pour signifier leur appartenance a un meme groupe social et affirmer la singularite de ce groupe, les varietes traditionnelles de plantes cultivees par les communautes paysannes constituent des modeles interessants a etudier. La « mise en patrimoine » des elements d’une culture releve avant tout de mecanismes sociaux et politiques qui sous-tendent les manieres qu’ont les groupes humains de se differencier les uns des autres. Toutefois, les objets vivants, et plus particulierement les plantes domestiquees (especes et varietes), presentent aussi des caracteristiques particulieres sur lesquelles il convient de reflechir.

Abstract

Globalization is a process that encompasses the accelerated and simultaneous circulation of ideas, goods, and human beings (Appadurai, 1996). In an Amazonian context, this chapter aims at analyzing the impacts of particular land status ownership on the resilience and flexibility of traditional communities facing globalization (Kramer et al, 2009). The Amazon has been part of the global market since the 16th century: from the drogas do Sertao, through the rubber boom, to Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) and acai (Euterpe oleracea), the global demand for Amazonian products has played a crucial role in the phases of human population of this rich basin (Bunker, 1985). Mark Harris (2006), following Moran and Parker, characterizes the “cabocla” populations by their ecological adaptations as well as their economic versatility. During the 1990s and 2000s, a great number of “traditional” and/or indigenous communities were granted land rights in Brazil. Innovative legal statuses were created, either for the sake of environmental protection or as a function of the peculiar special social status of some social groups, mainly indigenous people and remnants of escaped slave communities (i.e. remnant quilombola communities). At the core of these rights is the recognition of a “special relationship” between these traditional communities and their territories. Due to the acknowledgement of this particular link, almost 30% of the Legal Amazon is officially under the responsibility of traditional communities.1 However, traditional communities are now facing contradictory pressures induced by Brazilian public policies and globalization. Abstract

Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott), cultivated in Vêtuboso, a village of northern Vanuatu, Melanesia, was surveyed to: (I) assess the extent of morphological and molecular variation being maintained by growers at the village level and, (2) compare this diversity with the diversity found in the crops in Vanuatu. Ethnobotanical data were combined with AFLP analysis to elucidate possible sources of variation. Folk assessment of variation is based on: (a) morphological characteristics (11 characters), (b) names and (c) classification according to habitat, uses, origin and agronomic adaptation. This 3-fold approach allowed growers to differentiate 96 morphotypes, all of which are given distinct vernacular names. AFLP finger-prints successfully differentiated all these 96 morphotypes which do not present a significant intra-clonal variation. But genetic results showed no clear groupings according to geographic origin or habitat of morphotypes and stated that the diversity found within the village was comparable with the overall diversity found in Vanuatu. Local nomenclature and stories associated with each cultivar suggested' three sources of diversity: introductions (38%), somatic mutations (15%) and sexual recombinations (48%). AFLP results confirm folk beliefs about origin at least for three pairs of mutants. The 11 so-called wild forms analysed by AFLP were suggested to be feral, escapes from domestication. A dynamic in situ conservation strategy (DISC), favouring a broadening of the national genetic base, was discussed for taro.

Abstract

International audience; In many small countries of the South Pacific, the production of copra has a predominant place in the rural economy. To provide high- yielding planting materials to farmers, coconut cultivars are usually selected by a research institution and improved seeds are produced in centralized seed gardens. In the Vanuatu archipelago, the dissemination of such a type of material is slowed down by the fact that the villages are difficult to reach, by the cost of transport and of the seeds, especially when the price of copra is low. So, farmers get their planting materials at a low cost mainly through an informal selection of seed selection and supply. In 1995, the COGENT network initiated a survey on the coconut cultivars that are conserved in situ by the farmers in Asia and in the South Pacific. In Vanuatu, the initial results of this survey show that there is a wide range of morphological types of coconut identified by the farmers and also a lot of uses which can be related to these types. The possibility to improve the informal system of seed supply while maintaining a large coconut genetic diversity by in situ conservation is discussed.; La production de coprah occupe une place importante dans l'économie des petits pays du Pacifique Sud. Dans l'archipel du Vanuatu, la demande des planteurs pour du matériel végétal amélioré par la recherche et produit dans des champs semenciers centralisés est cependant fortement limitée par le coût des semences et les difficultés d'accès aux villages dans un contexte mondial marqué par le faible niveau des prix du coprah. Un système informel d'approvisionnement en semences pourvoit en grande partie aux besoins de planteurs suivant des modalités encore mal connues. Une étude a été initiée en 1995 par le COGENT afin d'inventorier les cultivars conservés in situ par les fermiers au Vanuatu. Les premiers résultats de cette enquête, réalisée suivant des méthodes participatives, mettent en évidence la grande variété de morphotypes identifiés par les planteurs et les usages en relation avec ceux-ci. Les possibilités d'amélioration de la gestion du système semencier informel par une « sélection à la ferme », tout en maintenant une diversité génétique, sont discutées.

40. Biodiversité(s), quand les frontières entre culture et nature s'effacent

Abstract

La notion de biodiversite affirme l’unite de la vie dans toute la diversite de ses manifestations, a tous les niveaux de son org a n i s a t i on 1 . Elle exprime la valeur inherente a cette diversite qui est a la fois le produit singulier de processus naturels relevant du temps long de l’evolution et le fruit de l’« histoire humaine de la n a t u r e». L’imprecision de la notion contribue a faire son succes par sa vertu federatrice: elle semble pouvoir rassembler dans un meme combat la protection de la nature et la defense de la diversite culturelle. Depuis la creation du terme par Walter G. Rosen en 1986 et sa formalisation juridique dans la convention sur la diversite biologique (CDB) de 1992, la lutte contre l’appauvrissement de la diversite biologique traduit un changement profond dans la strategie des programmes et des politiques de protection de la nature. L’erosion de la biodiversite, en effet, ne designe pas simplement l’extinction massive des especes ou la disparition des espaces vierges de toute activite humaine. Elle revele avant tout la fragilite des systemes naturels et semi-naturels malmenes qui peinent a repondre aux besoins et aux attentes des societes. Loin de s’opposer au developpement, la conservation de la diversite biologique, domestique aussi bien que sauvage, se decouvre desormais comme la condition necessaire de sa durabilite. La biodiversite tend alors a fonctionner comme une norme qui permet d’evaluer et de corriger, quand cela s’impose, l’impact des hommes sur l’evolution de leur environnement. La remise en cause de la maniere dont les societes industrielles exploitent intensivement les ressources naturelles s’accompagne d’une reevaluation des formes dites traditionnelles de mise en valeur des milieux et des modes de vie qui leur sont attaches. Reconnaissant que la disparition des usages locaux et la perte des savoir-faire jouent un role determinant dans les mecanismes qui favorisent l’erosion de la diversite biologique, l’article 8j de la CDB promeut ainsi les savoirs des «c o mmunautes locales et peuples autochtones ». La diversite culturelle est Sophie Caillon est doctorante en geographie a l’universite d’Orleans. Elle mene des recherches sur l’agrobiodiversite au Vanuatu (Pacifique Sud). Patrick Degeorges est professeur de philosophie, doctorant en sociologie politique a l’Institut d’etudes politiques de Paris.

Abstract

Floodplains of large tropical rivers are environments characterized by periodic flooding from the river and its tributaries. Numerous studies emphasize the paradoxical aspect of these ecosystems, between ‘productive’ environments naturally fertilized by alluvial deposits, or 'constraining' and ‘risky’ environments. Livelihoods in the floodplains are varied, but in most cases people combine agricultural activities with fishing, pastoralism, hunting and the extraction of wild plant resources. Although the complementarity of production activities is recognized in most studies as an adaptation to exploit the diversity of natural resources at different stage of flooding, this multi-activity is rarely examined in detail. Adopting an interdisciplinary, systemic and diachronic approach, this thesis aims to demonstrate how multi-activity enhances the adaptation to a fluctuating environment whose dynamics can be observed at three main time scales: the seasonal scale, the historical scale and the scale of the individual's life. This work is based on ethnographic interviews, on collection of eco-hydrological data and on landscape analysis conducted during a period of eight months in the village of Mossaka in the Congolese cuvette region in the Congo basin. Firstly, we show that the spatial and temporal association of a diversity of activities allow the inhabitants of Mossaka to adapt to the seasonal variability of water level. These include a diversity of fishing techniques, several agricultural systems (raised-field agriculture and flood-recessional agriculture) in which a rich agrobiodiversity is planted, and many other activities—some depending on natural resources, others not. Secondly, by reconstructing the dynamics of the social-ecological system over time, we examine how the different activities, and their relative importance, have changed since the pre-colonial period and we identify the main drivers of change. In particular, we describe the demographic, ecological, economic and social changes that have led to the rapid adoption of flood-recessional agriculture in the last thirty years. Finally, by analyzing the life stories of several inhabitants of Mossaka, we show that the great flexibility of the multi-activity livelihood system allows people to adapt to different challenges and uncertainties—particularly social ones. This thesis contributes to the few studies that examine in an integrated manner the diversity of livelihood activities in floodplain environments, and advocates greater recognition of the importance of multi-activity livelihood systems and of social diversity. This work also contributes to a better understanding of the Congolese Cuvette region, which despite its major ecological and economic role has so far attracted little scientific interest., Les plaines inondables des grands fleuves tropicaux sont des milieux caractérisés par leurs inondations périodiques au rythme des crues et des décrues. La littérature est abondante à souligner l’aspect paradoxal de ces écosystèmes, entre milieux ‘productifs’, naturellement fertilisés par les dépôts d’alluvions, et milieux ‘contraignants’ et ‘risqués’. Les modes d’exploitation mis en place par les populations vivant dans les plaines inondables sont variés mais dans la majorité des cas, les populations combinent des activités agricoles avec des activités de pêche, de pastoralisme, de chasse, et d’extraction de produits forestiers ligneux et non ligneux. La complémentarité des activités de production est reconnue dans la plupart des études comme une adaptation permettant de valoriser la diversité des ressources naturelles aux différents stades d’inondation, mais cette pluriactivité est rarement examinée en détail. En adoptant une démarche interdisciplinaire, systémique et diachronique, ce travail de thèse vise à démontrer en quoi la pluriactivité favorise l’adaptation des populations à un environnement fluctuant dont la dynamique peut s’observer à trois échelles de temps : l’échelle saisonnière, l’échelle historique du ‘temps long’, et l’échelle de la vie de l’individu. Ce travail repose sur des entretiens ethnographiques, sur la collecte de données éco-hydrologiques, et sur des analyses du paysage réalisés pendant une période de terrain de huit mois dans le village de Mossaka dans la région de la Cuvette congolaise du bassin du Congo. Nous montrons dans un premier temps que l’association spatiale et temporelle d’une multiplicité de techniques de pêche, de plusieurs systèmes agricoles (agriculture sur champs surélevés et agriculture de décrue) dans lesquels est plantée une riche agrobiodiversité ainsi que de nombreuses autres activités dépendantes ou non des ressources naturelles, permettent aux habitants de Mossaka de s’adapter à la variabilité saisonnière du niveau d’eau. Ensuite, en reconstituant la diachronie du système social-écologique, nous regardons comment les différentes activités de subsistance et leur importance relative ont évolué depuis la période précoloniale et nous identifions les principaux leviers de changements. Nous décrivons plus particulièrement les changements démographiques, écologiques, économiques et sociaux qui ont conduit à l’adoption rapide de l’agriculture de décrue depuis une trentaine d’années. Enfin, en analysant les récits de vie de plusieurs habitants de Mossaka, nous montrons que la grande flexibilité des systèmes de subsistance pluriactifs des individus permet de répondre à différents enjeux et incertitudes notamment d’ordre social. Ce travail de thèse constitue un apport au faible nombre d’études qui regardent de manière intégrée les différentes activités composant les systèmes de subsistance en plaines inondables et se prononce en faveur d’une meilleure reconnaissance de la pluriactivité et également de la diversité sociale. Ce travail participe aussi à une meilleure compréhension de la région de la Cuvette congolaise qui, malgré son rôle écologique et économique majeur, a jusque-là peu attiré les intérêts scientifiques.
