Recently, more accessible transcriptomic approaches have provided a new and deeper understanding of envi- ronmental toxicity. The present study focuses on the transcriptomic profiles of green microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii exposed to new industrially promising material, TiO2 nanotubes (NTs), as an example of a widely used one-dimensional nanomaterial. The first algal in vitro assay included 2.5 and 7.5 mg/L TiO2 NTs, resulting in a dose-dependent negative effect on biological endpoints. At a working concentration of 7.5 mg/L, RNA - sequencing showed a mainly negative effect on the cells. In summary, the results indicated metabolic disrup- tion, such as ATP loss, damage to mitochondria and chloroplasts, loss of solutes due to permeated membranes, and cell wall damage. Moreover, apoptosis-induced transcripts were detected. Interestingly, reactivation of transposons was observed. In signalling and transcription pathways, including chromatin remodelling and locking, the annotated genes were downregulated., V poslední době poskytly přístupnější transkriptomické přístupy nové a hlubší porozumění o environmentální toxicitě. Tato studie se zaměřuje na transkriptomické profily zelených mikrořas Chlamydomonas reinhardtii vystavených novému průmyslově slibnému materiálu, TiO2 nanotrubičkám (NTs), jako příkladu široce používaného jedno-dimensionálního nanomateriálu. První test na řasách in vitro zahrnoval 2,5 a 7,5 mg/l TiO2 NT, což vedlo k negativnímu účinku na biologické parametry závislém na dávce. Při pracovní koncentraci 7,5 mg/l vykazovalo sekvenování RNA převážně negativní účinek na buňky. V souhrnu výsledky naznačovaly metabolickou poruchu, jako je ztráta ATP, poškození mitochondrií a chloroplastů, ztráta rozpuštěných látek v důsledku permeovaných membrán a poškození buněčné stěny. Navíc byly detekovány apoptózou indukované transkripty. Je zajímavé, že byla pozorována reaktivace transpozonů. V signálních a transkripčních drahách, včetně remodelace a uzamčení chromatinu, byly anotované geny podregulovány.

In this work, in-situ annealing of TiO2 nanotube (TNT) layers in an XRD chamber was carried out to investigate the crystallization process of the TNT layers in details. TNT layers of different thicknesses, i.e. 1, 5 and 20 & mu;m, and of different morphology, i.e. double wall vs. single wall, were annealed in the temperature range from room temperature to 500 degrees C with two distinctly different annealing rates. Additionally, three different annealing atmospheres were explored, namely air as an oxidative, N2 as an inert, and 5%H2/95%N2 as a reductive atmosphere. XRD patterns were measured every 15 degrees C of the heating ramp and the crystallite sizes of anatase phase were calculated from the anatase peak using Scherer equation at each data point. The differences in crystallization behavior for the different TNT layers as well as the effect of the annealing atmosphere for 5 & mu;m thick TNT layers are described and discussed., V této práci bylo provedeno in-situ žíhání vrstev TiO2 nanotrubiček (TNT) v XRD komoře, aby se detailně prozkoumal proces krystalizace vrstev TNT. Vrstvy TNT o různých tloušťkách, tj. 1, 5 a 20 um, a různé morfologie, tj. s dvojitou stěnou vs. s jednoduchou stěnou, byly žíhány v teplotním rozsahu od pokojové teploty do 500 °C se dvěma zřetelně odlišnými rychlostmi žíhání. Kromě toho byly zkoumány tři různé žíhací atmosféry, jmenovitě vzduch jako oxidační, N2 jako inertní a 5%H2/95%N2 jako redukční atmosféra. XRD paterny byly měřeny každých 15 stupňů Celsia rampy ohřevu a velikosti krystalitů fáze anatasu byly vypočteny z píku anatasu pomocí Schererovy rovnice v každém datovém bodě. Jsou popsány a diskutovány rozdíly v krystalizačním chování pro různé vrstvy TNT a také vliv žíhací atmosféry pro vrstvy TNT o tloušťce 5 um.

The influence of annealing temperature, the crystallinity, textural properties of magnetically guidable anodic TiO2 nanotubes in form of single tube powders on the photocatalytic decomposition of model organic dye is investigated for the first time. The powders were prepared from self-organized anodic TiO2 nanotube layers (grown on Ti) by etching in piranha solution, detaching them from the Ti substrate, and annealing in a wide range of temperatures (400-900 degrees C). The nanotubular shape was preserved up to 800 degrees C. Powders annealed up to 800 degrees C did not contain any detectable rutile phase, which is unique among other TiO2 nanomaterials at this temperature. Part of the obtained TiO2 ST-NT powders was decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles using an oleic acid-based synthesis. The TiO2 ST-NT and TiO2 ST-NT@Fe3O4NPs powders were characterized in terms of morphology, crystallinity, and specific surface area. Finally, all materials were exploited for the photocatalytic decomposition of a model dye. The best photocatalytic performance of TiO2 ST-NT and TiO2 ST-NT@Fe3O4NPs powders were obtained at annealing temperatures of 600 and 700 degrees C, respectively. The synergy resulting from annealing, crystallite size, and specific surface area enhances the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 ST-NT and TiO2 ST-NT@Fe3O4NPs powders under UV light. This approach goes beyond the classical Kasuga alkaline hydrothermal approach, enabling the preparation of large quantity of TiO2 nanotubes without any impurities (such as e.g. Na or Ca content resulting from the Kasuga approach)., V této práci je poprvé zkoumán vliv teploty žíhání, krystalinity, texturních vlastností magneticky ovladatelných anodických nanotrubiček TiO2 ve formě prášků na fotokatalytický rozklad modelového organického barviva. Prášky byly připraveny ze samoorganizovaných vrstev anodických nanotrubiček TiO2 (vyrostlých na Ti) leptáním v roztoku piraňa, jejich oddělením od substrátu Ti a žíháním v širokém rozsahu teplot (400–900 °C). Nanotubulární tvar byl zachován až do 800 °C. Prášky žíhané do 800 °C neobsahovaly žádnou detekovatelnou rutilovou fázi, což je mezi ostatními nanomateriály TiO2 při této teplotě unikátní. Část získaných prášků TiO2 ST-NT byla dekorována nanočásticemi Fe3O4 pomocí syntézy na bázi kyseliny olejové. Prášky TiO2 ST-NT a Ti02 ST-NT@Fe3O4NPs byly charakterizovány z hlediska morfologie, krystalinity a specifického povrchu. Nakonec byly všechny materiály využity pro fotokatalytický rozklad modelového barviva. Nejlepší fotokatalytické vlastnosti prášků TiO2 ST-NT a TiO2 ST-NT@Fe3O4NPs byly získány při teplotách žíhání 600 a 700 °C, respektive. Synergie vyplývající z žíhání, velikosti krystalitů a specifické plochy povrchu zvyšuje fotokatalytickou aktivitu prášků TiO2 ST-NT a TiO2 ST-NT@Fe3O4NPs pod UV světlem. Tento přístup přesahuje klasický alkalický hydrotermální přístup Kasuga a umožňuje přípravu velkého množství nanotrubiček TiO2 bez jakýchkoli nečistot (jako je např. obsah Na nebo Ca vyplývající z přístupu Kasuga).

Detection of visible light is a key component in material characterization techniques and often a key component of quality or purity control analyses for health and safety applications. Here in this work, to enable visible light detection at gigahertz frequencies, a planar microwave resonator is integrated with high aspect ratio TiO2 nanotube (TNT) layer-sensitized CdS coating using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. This unique method of visible light detection with microwave-based sensing improves integration of the light detection devices with digital technology. The designed planar microwave resonator sensor was implemented and tested with resonant frequency between 8.2 and 8.4 GHz and a resonant amplitude between -15 and -25 dB, depending on the wavelength of the illuminated light illumination on the nanotubes. The ALD CdS coating sensitized the nanotubes in visible light up to similar to 650 nm wavelengths, as characterized by visible spectroscopy. Furthermore, CdS-coated TNT layer integration with the planar resonator sensor allowed for development of a robust microwave sensing platform with improved sensitivity to green and red light (60 and 1300%, respectively) compared to the blank TNT layers. Moreover, the CdS coating of the TNT layer enhanced the sensor's response to light exposure and resulted in shorter recovery times once the light source was removed. Despite having a CdS coating, the sensor was capable of detecting blue and UV light; however, refining the sensitizing layer could potentially enhance its sensitivity to specific wavelengths of light in certain applications., Detekce viditelného světla je klíčovou součástí technik charakterizace materiálů a často klíčovou součástí analýz kontroly kvality nebo čistoty pro aplikace v oblasti ochrany zdraví a bezpečnosti. V této práci je pro umožněna detekce viditelného světla na gigahertzových frekvencích integrován planární mikrovlnný rezonátor s vrstvou TiO2 nanotrubic (TNT) s vysokým poměrem stran se světlo citlivým povlakem CdS pomocí techniky depoziceatomárníchvrstev (ALD). Tato unikátní metoda detekce viditelného světla s mikrovlnným snímáním zlepšuje integraci zařízení pro detekci světla s digitální technologií. Navržený planární mikrovlnný rezonátorový senzor byl implementován a testován s rezonanční frekvencí mezi 8,2 a 8,4 GHz a rezonanční amplitudou mezi -15 a -25 dB, v závislosti na vlnové délce osvětleného světelného osvětlení na nanotrubičkách. Povlak ALD CdS sensitizoval nanotrubice ve viditelném světle až do vlnových délek podobných 650 nm, jak je charakterizováno spektroskopií ve viditelném světle. Kromě toho integrace TNT vrstvy potažené CdS s planárním rezonátorovým senzorem umožnila vývoj robustní platformy mikrovlnného snímání se zlepšenou citlivostí na zelené a červené světlo (60 a 1300 %, v tomto pořadí) ve srovnání s prázdnými vrstvami TNT. Kromě toho povlak CdS vrstvy TNT zlepšil odezvu senzoru při expozici světlu a vedl ke kratší době zotavení po odstranění světelného zdroje. Navzdory tomu, že má CdS povlak, senzor byl schopen detekovat modré a UV světlo; rafinace sensitizační vrstvy by však mohla potenciálně zvýšit její citlivost na specifické vlnové délky světla v určitých aplikacích.

This work aims to investigate the chemical and/or structural modification of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V (TiAlV) alloy surfaces to possess even more favorable properties toward cell growth. These modifications were achieved by (i) growing TiO2 nanotube layers on these substrates by anodization, (ii) surface coating by ultrathin TiO2 atomic layer deposition (ALD), or (iii) by the combination of both. In particular, an ultrathin TiO2 coating, achieved by 1 cycle of TiO2 ALD, was intended to shade the impurities of F- and V-based species in tested materials while preserving the original structure and morphology. The cell growth on TiO2-coated and uncoated TiO2 nanotube layers, Ti foils, and TiAlV alloy foils were compared after incubation for up to 72 h. For evaluation of the biocompatibility of tested materials, cell lines of different tissue origin, including predominantly MG-63 osteoblastic cells, were used. For all tested nanomaterials, adding an ultrathin TiO2 coating improved the growth of MG-63 cells and other cell lines compared with the non-TiO2-coated counterparts. Here, the presented approach of ultrathin TiO2 coating could be used potentially for improving implants, especially in terms of shading problematic F- and V-based species in TiO2 nanotube layers.

In this work, for the first time, the influence of the crystallinity of TiO2 nanotube (TNT) layers on their gas phase photocatalytic performance was investigated under ISO standards using two distinct model pollutants, namely, hexane and acetaldehyde. TNT layers (1 mu m thick) on 5 x 10 cm(2) large Ti substrates were employed in this work due to their excellent adhesion to Ti upon annealing at high temperatures. Annealing of the TNT layers was carried out in a temperature range between 300 and 700 degrees C, resulting in TNT layers with different crystallinities, i.e., from the pure anatase phase to an 85% rutile phase. The superior performance of the TNT layers annealed at 600 degrees C with mixed anatase and rutile phase compared to other specimens was observed for both model pollutants, stemming from the band alignment between the two crystalline phases. For higher annealing temperatures, however, the photocatalytic performance of the TNT layers was reduced due to a partial disintegration of the TNTs. No surface contamination of the TNT layers with residues of pollutant degradation products was observed after experiments.

In this work, for the first time 3D Ti-Nb meshes of differentcomposition,i.e., Ti, Ti-1Nb, Ti-5Nb, and Ti-10 Nb, were produced by direct inkwriting. This additive manufacturing method allows tuning of the meshcomposition by simple blending of pure Ti and Nb powders. The 3D meshesare extremely robust with a high compressive strength, giving potentialuse in photocatalytic flow-through systems. After successful wirelessanodization of the 3D meshes toward Nb-doped TiO2 nanotube(TNT) layers using bipolar electrochemistry, they were employed forthe first time for photocatalytic degradation of acetaldehyde in aflow-through reactor built based on ISO standards. Nb-doped TNT layerswith low concentrations of Nb show superior photocatalytic performancecompared with nondoped TNT layers due to the lower amount of recombinationsurface centers. High concentrations of Nb lead to an increased numberof recombination centers within the TNT layers and reduce the photocatalyticdegradation rates.

In this work, the cytotoxicity of black TiO2 nanotubes in comparison to their white counterparts is exploited for the first time. To provide a comprehensive overview, the toxicity is also assessed in comparison to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using two different cell lines. The TiO2 nanotube layers were prepared by anodic oxidation of Ti foils and investigated in the as-prepared white form, and in the black form, achieved by reduction via comproportionation reaction of Ti and TiO2. Additionally, a part of the black TiO2 nanotube layers was coated with a thin TiO2 coating with a nominal thickness of similar to 0.275 nm by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). Pulmonary A549 cells and neural SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to a wide range of TiO2 nanotube concentrations (1-500 mu g/mL) fo(r) 24 and 48 h. Then, the cytotoxicity was evaluated using cell viability and glutathione assessments. Essentially, no reduction in cell viability was observed after incubating the cells with TiO2 nanotubes up to 100 mu g/mL, while MWCNTs decreased the cell viability at a similar concentration significantly. In addition, ALD TiO2 coating on the black TiO2 nanotubes caused disappearance of mild toxic effects of white and black TiO2 nanotubes due to the shading of carbon and fluorine species incorporated within the TiO2 nanotube walls.

2-dimensional FeSx nanosheets of different sizes are synthesized by applying different numbers of atomic layer deposition (ALD) cycles on TiO2 nanotube layers and graphite sheets as supporting materials and used as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochemical results confirm electrocatalytic activity in alkaline media with outstanding long-term stability (>65 h) and enhanced catalytic activity, reflected by a notable drop in the initial HER overpotential value (up to 26 %). By using a range of characterization techniques, the origin of the enhanced catalytic activity was found to be caused by the synergistic interplay between in situ morphological and compositional changes in the 2D FeSx nanosheets during HER. Under the application of a cathodic potential in alkaline media, the as-synthesized 2D FeSx nanosheets transformed into iron oxyhydroxide-iron oxysulfide core-shell nanoparticles, which exhibited a higher active catalytic surface and newly created Fe-based HER catalytic sites.

Urinary-based infections affect millions of people worldwide. Such bacterial infections are mainly caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) biofilm formation in the bladder and/or urinary catheters. Herein, the authors present a hybrid enzyme/photocatalytic microrobot, based on urease-immobilized TiO2/CdS nanotube bundles, that can swim in urea as a biocompatible fuel and respond to visible light. Upon illumination for 2 h, these microrobots are able to remove almost 90% of bacterial biofilm, due to the generation of reactive radicals, while bare TiO2/CdS photocatalysts (non-motile) or urease-coated microrobots in the dark do not show any toxic effect. These results indicate a synergistic effect between the self-propulsion provided by the enzyme and the photocatalytic activity induced under light stimuli. This work provides a photo-biocatalytic approach for the design of efficient light-driven microrobots with promising applications in microbiology and biomedicine., Močové infekce postihují miliony lidí po celém světě. Takové bakteriální infekce jsou způsobeny hlavně tvorbou biofilmu Escherichia coli (E. coli) v močovém měchýři a/nebo močových katétrech. V této práci je představen hybridní enzym/fotokatalytický mikrorobot, založený na svazcích nanotrubiček TiO2/CdS imobilizovaných ureázou, který dokáže plavat v močovině jako biokompatibilním palivu a reagovat na viditelné světlo. Při osvětlení po dobu 2 hodin jsou tyto mikroroboty schopny odstranit téměř 90 % bakteriálního biofilmu v důsledku vytváření reaktivních radikálů, zatímco holé fotokatalyzátory TiO2/CdS (nepohyblivé) nebo mikroroboty potažené ureázou ve tmě nevykazují žádný toxický účinek. Tyto výsledky naznačují synergický účinek mezi vlastním pohonem poskytovaným enzymem a fotokatalytickou aktivitou indukovanou světelnými podněty. Tato práce poskytuje zajímavý foto-biokatalytický přístup pro návrh účinných, světlem řízených mikrorobotů, se slibnými aplikacemi v mikrobiologii a biomedicíně.

Herein, we report the performance of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) as a catalyst for methanol electro-oxidation. Pd NPs were decorated onto anodic TiO2 nanotube (TNT) layers as supporting material that possess a large available surface area and direct electrical contact via the underlying titanium foil. Different Pd loadings (150 - 300 - 450 - 600 ALD cycles) show different particles sizes ranging between 7 and 12 nm, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. Coalescence dominated visibly from 450 ALD cycles, which led to a porous Pd layer all along the TNT walls rather than the growth of individual particles. Electrocatalytic performance was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), where the catalytic activity increased proportional with Pd loading up to the highest values for 400 and 450 cycles, whereas a further increase in the number of ALD cycles (N-ALD) did not show any additional improvement in methanol oxidation current densities. TNT layers decorated with 400, 450 and 600 Pd ALD cycles show featureless curves suggesting complete anti-poisoning ability or possibly a proof of a direct conversion from CH3OH to CO2 (without any intermediate byproducts). The lack of an oxidation peak during the anodic scan and therefore a reduction peak during the cathodic scan, confirms Pd NPs (stabilized by TiO2) efficiently utilize OHads and chemisorbed CH3OH in a way that its CO poisoning was inhibited. As a result, the tuned high surface area TNT layers exhibited excellent performance as a supporting material for Pd NPs against formation of electrochemical poisoning species. Finally, the mechanism of the TNT layers interaction with Pd NPs, which led to the propelling methanol oxidation reaction without loss in performance over cycling is postulated., V této práci je zkoumám potenciál nanočástic Pd (NP) připravených depozicí atomárních vrstev (ALD) jako katalyzátoru pro elektrooxidaci methanolu. Pd NP byly dekorovány na anodické TiO2 nanotrubicové (TNT) vrstvy jakožto na nosný materiál, který má velkou dostupnou povrchovou plochu a přímý elektrický kontakt přes podkladovou titanovou fólii. Různá množství deponovaného Pd (s využitím 150 - 300 - 450 - 600 cyklů ALD) vykazují různé velikosti částic - v rozmezí od 7 do 12 nm, jak odhalila transmisní elektronová mikroskopie. Koalescence dominovala viditelně od 450 cyklů ALD, což vedlo k porézní vrstvě Pd podél stěn TNT, spíše než k růstu jednotlivých částic. Elektrokatalytický výkon byl zkoumán pomocí cyklické voltametrie (CV), kde se katalytická aktivita zvyšovala úměrně s množstvím Pd až na nejvyšší hodnoty pro 400 a 450 cyklů, zatímco další zvýšení počtu cyklů ALD (N-ALD) neprokázalo žádné další zlepšení v hustotě proudu oxidace methanolu. Vrstvy TNT zdobené cykly 400, 450 a 600 Pd ALD vykazují nevýrazné křivky naznačující úplnou schopnost materiálu odolat katalytické otravě nebo možná důkaz přímé konverze z CH3OH na CO2 (bez jakýchkoli meziproduktů). Absence oxidačního píku během anodického skenu, a tedy redukčního vrcholu během katodického skenu, potvrzuje, že Pd NP (stabilizované TiO2) účinně využívají OHads a chemisorbovaný CH3OH takovým způsobem, že jejich otrava přes CO byla inhibována. Výsledkem je, že vyladěné TNT vrstvy s velkým povrchem vykazovaly vynikající výkon jako podpůrný materiál pro Pd NP proti tvorbě elektrochemických katalytické otravě. Nakonec je postulován mechanismus interakce vrstev TNT s Pd NP, který vedl k hnací oxidační reakci methanolu bez ztráty výkonu během cyklování.

In this work, the utilization of TiO2 nanotube (TNT) layers decorated with TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) as anodes in Li-ion microbatteries is reported for the first time. Such TiO2 NPs decorated TNT layers possess an increased amount of active material and a higher surface area compared with their non-decorated (blank) counterparts. TNT layers decorated with several different amounts of TiO2 NPs were tested by galvanostatic cycling tests. The capacities of the TiO2 NPs decorated TNT layer anodes increase with the amount of NPs decoration due to the enhancement of the capacitive effect. Indeed, an areal capacity of -126 pAh cm(-2) (vs 88 pAh cm(-2) for the non decorated TNT layer) at the 200th cycle has been obtained after optimizing the NPs loading. On the other hand, a too high NPs loading of the TNT layers leads to a reduced areal capacity due to clogging of the nanotube exteriors and a significant decrease in inner diameter of the nanotubes., V této práci je poprvé popsáno využití vrstev TiO2 nanotrubic (TNT), které jsou dekorované nanočásticemi TiO2 (NP), jako anody v Li-ion mikrobateriích. Takové vrstvy TNT zdobené Ti02 NP mají vykazují větší množství aktivního materiálu a větší plochu povrchu ve srovnání s jejich nedekorovanými protějšky. Vrstvy TNT zdobené různými množstvími TiO2 NP byly testovány galvanostatickými cyklickými testy. Kapacity anod s vrstvou TNT zdobených TiO2 NP se zvyšovali s množstvím dekorovaných NP v důsledku zvýšení kapacitního efektu. Po optimalizaci zatížení NP byla skutečně získána plošná kapacita -126 pAh cm-2 oproti 88 pAh cm-2 pro nedekorovanou vrstvu TNT ve 200. cyklu. Na druhou stranu příliš vysoké zatížení NPs vrstev TNT vedlo ke snížení plošné kapacity v důsledku zanášení vnějších částí nanotrubice a výraznému zmenšení vnitřního průměru nanotrubiček.
