5. Space Qualification Issues in Acousto-optic and Electro-optic Devices

Abstract

Satellite and space-based applications of photonic devices and systems require operational reliability in the harsh environment of space for extended periods of time. This in turn requires every component of the systems and their packaging to meet space qualifications. Acousto- and electro-optical devices form the major components of many current space based optical systems, which is the focus of this paper. The major space qualification issues are related to: mechanical stability, thermal effects and operation of the devices in the naturally occurring space radiation environment. This paper will discuss acousto- and electro-optic materials and devices with respect to their stability against mechanical vibrations, thermal cycling in operating and non-operating conditions and device responses to space ionizing and displacement radiation effects. Selection of suitable materials and packaging to meet space qualification criteria will also be discussed. Finally, a general roadmap for production and testing of acousto- and electro-optic devices will be discussed.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) devices that are fabricated using in-house grown, high-quality single crystals of mercurous bromide (Hg2Br2). The Hg2Br2 crystals were grown using physical vapor transport (PVT). The quality of the Hg2Br2 single crystals are determined using high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the (220) reflection was found to be 0.029 degrees, which is a significant improvement in the growth of Hg2Br2 bulk single crystals. The diffraction efficiencies of the fabricated AOTF device in the long wavelength infrared (LWIR) found to be 26% which is the highest reported. The device was tested for point detection and for imaging capabilities in the LWIR range. The study shows promising results using Hg2Br2 in LWIR AOTF-based technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both Schaefer-Bergmann diffraction and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy were used to measure the six independent elastic-stiffness coefficients of the trigonal, non-piezoelectric crystal a-α-BaB2O4. The two measurement sets resulted in a root-mean-square variance of 1.2%. Abstract

Abstract: Large crystals of Hg2Cl2 and Hg2Br2 (48mm in diameter, up to 600g in weight) have been grown by the physical vapor transport (PVT) technique in closed ampoules in vertical configuration without contact with the ampoule walls. The starting materials have been pre-purified by resublimation. Seed selection has been accomplished by having a narrow tubing at the tip of the growth ampoule. Thermochemical analysis of the system is done and discussed. The grown crystals show good transparency and good crystallographic quality. An acousto-optic modulator built from the Hg2Cl2 crystal showed good performance consistent with predicted device parameters. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
