A ternary blend, wherein a tertiary acceptor is incorporated into a donor:non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) binary blend has emerged as a promising strategy for improving power conversion efficiency and stability of organic bulk heterojunction photovoltaics (OPVs). However, the effects of the tertiary component remain elusive due to the complex variation of crystallinity and morphology of donor and acceptor phases during thermal annealing. Herein a combination of in situ transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy utilized during annealing identifies that (1) the addition of the tertiary component (O-IDFBR) delays the glass transition temperature of edge-on-oriented polymer donor (P3HT), prohibits the glass transition of face-on-oriented polymer donor (P3HT), broadens the crystallization temperature of O-IDTBR, and enhances the overall crystallinity of the donor and acceptor phases (P3HT and O-IDTBR), and (2) the ternary component induces homogeneously distributed nanoscale domains rather than a microscale separation between the donor and acceptor as observed in the binary blend. The optimized nanoscale domain morphology, driven by slower crystallization and enhanced overall crystallinity leads to a more stable morphology, resulting in superior device performance and stability.

Despite recent breakthroughs in the fabrication of spin-coated small-area devices (≤0.1 cm2) with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of more than 17%, printed large-area organic solar cells (OSCs) are significantly less efficient because of the intrinsic differences between the coating dynamics of the two types of OSCs. The PCEs of printed large-area (∼100 cm2) OSCs have typically been decreased compared with those of small-area spin-coated devices. In this work, an efficient low-temperature printing method to fabricate high-efficiency large-area nonfullerene-based OSC modules is successfully demonstrated. A systematic study of the relationship between the concentration of the photoactive solution and the resulting film properties reveals that the large-area modules (85 cm2) produced in this work deliver excellent performance, yielding PCEs of up to 8.18% with a geometric fill factor of 85%. These novel OSC modules are ∼87% as efficient as small-area printed single cells (cell PCE ∼9.43% with 1 cm2).

Recent breakthroughs in molecular design have allowed for remarkable achievement in the field of non-fullerene acceptor (NFA)-based organic solar cells (OSCs) with high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of over 15%. However, despite such promising advances, the inferior stability of OSCs under operating conditions remains a prominent challenge that must be overcome for their practical realization. Here, versatile ternary photoactive systems with simultaneously enhanced efficiency and photostability are developed by introducing a small amount of fullerene (PC71BM) into a narrow band gap NFA-based bulk heterojunction nanocomposite (PTB7-Th:IEICO-4F); this approach leads to an enhanced PCE of 10.55% and a prolonged lifetime, retaining approximately 80% of the initial PCE after 500 h of operation under continuous illumination. Based on the energy levels and surface energies of the component materials, cascade energetic alignment facilitates electron transfer without trapping. The PTB7-Th/PC71BM interface provides an energy barrier to suppress recombination between holes in PTB7-Th and electrons in IEICO-4F. Moreover, a small amount of PC71BM promotes favorable molecular packing and orientation of IEICO-4F, leading to enhanced electron mobility and balanced charge transport. A study using transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that the ternary blend effectively suppresses the evolution of charge recombination.

‘Sol–gel’-processed transition metal oxide (TMO) thin films sandwiched by an organic photoactive layer and metal electrodes have proven to be a versatile interlayer for photovoltaics with long-term stability on the laboratory scale; however, chemical defects and dewetting (or shrinkage) processes during sol–gel synthesis on top of the photoactive layer often cause performance variations, impeding the development of large-area photovoltaic modules. Here, we demonstrate that a low surface energy difference at the organic interface allows long-range diffusion of metal ion precursors to promote continuous chemical synthesis associated with oxo-bridge formation. Using high-resolution Auger electron spectroscopy, we confirm that the resultant TMO thin film on top of the suitable surface has a defect-free and continuous metal–oxygen network (MON) with a high oxygen/metal ratio. Our findings can be applied to obtain organic/perovskite photovoltaic modules having long-term stability, approaching an efficiency of 4.2%/14.5% and maintaining over 80% of their initial efficiency for up to 1500 hours/2000 hours with an area of 10.8 cm2/9.06 cm2.

Electric-field driven chemical doping modulation in a blend of solution-processed organic semiconductors (OSCs) and solid-state ionic liquids (SSILs) in response to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) provides a new exciting opportunity to facilitate printable and low-power chemical gas sensors (chemiresistors). In order to fully exploit this opportunity, a fundamental understanding of the molecular-level interactions among the OSCs, SSILs, and VOC components during the device operation is urgently needed. Herein, we demonstrate a highly sensitive and selective VOC gas sensor using π-conjugated polymer (here, P3HT as a model homopolymer) and SSIL blends. A newly developed SSIL forms a semi-crystalline solid at room temperature. P3HT with high molecular weight and regioregularity allows an extremely well-interconnected network in blends desirable for efficient charge transport. In P3HT:SSIL blends, we identify electric-field driven strong chemical interactions between π-CP and SSIL to tune the electrical conductivity of the π-CP. The enlarged interfacial areas in blends and the solid-state nature of the SSIL ensure highly tunable electrochemical interactions between them, efficiently modulating the electrical conductivity of the π-CP further upon exposure to different polar and non-polar VOCs. Our results demonstrate the π-conjugated polymer/SSIL complex as a new highly sensitive and selective gas sensor and provide a key scientific understanding of its molecular-level operational mechanism critical for developing molecular sensors towards next generation noninvasive diagnostics.

Recently, emerging third-generation photovoltaic technologies have shown rapid progress in device performance; the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are now surpassing 19% and 25%, respectively. Despite this dramatic enhancement, their efficiencies are theoretically limited based on the detailed balance model which accounts for inevitable loss mechanisms under operational conditions. Integrated solar cells, formed by monolithically integrating two photoactive layers of perovskite and BHJ with complementary absorption, provide a promising platform for further improvement in solar cell efficiency. In perovskite/BHJ integrated solar cells (POISCs), high bandgap perovskite offers high open-circuit voltage with minimal losses while low bandgap organic BHJ extends absorption bandwidth by covering the near-infrared region, resulting in additional photocurrent gain. Different from conventional tandem solar cells, integrated solar cells contain merged photoactive layers without the need for complicated recombination layers, which greatly simplifies fabrication processes. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in POISCs, including operational mechanism and structural development, and remaining challenges on the road toward efficient devices.

Elimination of charge trapping at defects is highly challenging for poly-crystalline organometal halide perovskites. Here, we report a new architecture for reinforcing the built-in electric field (Ein) across the photoactive layer with a pair of strong electric dipole layers (EDLs). The paired EDLs significantly intensify the Ein across the perovskite layer, resulting in suppressed charge trapping of photogenerated charges. As a result, our low-temperature processed P–I–N planar PeSC devices using the paired EDLs exhibit a higher power conversion efficiency (ηmax ∼ 19.4%) and a smaller device-to-device variation with a standard deviation (S.D.) of 0.70%, which far surpass those (ηmax ∼ 17.8%, S.D. ∼ 1.1%) of the devices with typical charge transport layers.

The advent of special types of polymeric semiconductors, known as “polymer blends,” presents new opportunities for the development of next‐generation electronics based on these semiconductors' versatile functionalities in device applications. Although these polymer blends contain semiconducting polymers (SPs) mixed with a considerably high content of insulating polymers, few of these blends unexpectedly yield much higher charge carrier mobilities than those of pure SPs. However, the origin of such an enhancement has remained unclear owing to a lack of cases exhibiting definite improvements in charge carrier mobility, and the limited knowledge concerning the underlying mechanism thereof. In this study, the morphological changes and internal nanostructures of polymer blends based on various SP types with different intermolecular interactions in an insulating polystyrene matrix are investigated. Through this investigation, the physical confinement of donor–acceptor type SP chains in a continuous nanoscale network structure surrounded by polystyrenes is shown to induce structural ordering with more straight edge‐on stacked SP chains. Hereby, high‐performance and transparent organic field‐effect transistors with a hole mobility of ≈5.4 cm2 V–1 s–1 and an average transmittance exceeding 72% in the visible range are achieved., The confinement effect of semiconducting polymer (SP) is a core factor directly influencing the charge transport properties of polymer blend electronic systems. This study generalizes that the physical confinement of donor–acceptor type SP can induce continuously connected SP network in insulating polymer matrix and the structural ordering with more straight edge‐on stacked SP chains enable an efficient charge transport.

Stretchable conductive materials have received great attention owing to their potential for realizing next-generation stretchable electronics. However, the simultaneous achievement of excellent mechanical stretchability and high electrical conductivity as well as cost-effective fabrication has been a significant challenge. Here, we report a highly stretchable and highly conducting polymer that was obtained by incorporating an ionic liquid. When 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate (EMIM TCB) was added to an aqueous conducting polymer solution of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), it was found that EMIM TCB acts not only as a secondary dopant but also as a plasticizer for PEDOT:PSS, resulting in a high conductivity of >1000 S cm–1 with stable performance at tensile strains up to 50% and even up to 180% in combination with the prestrained substrate technique. Ionic defects (e.g., organic cations and halide anions), preferably residing along grain boundaries (GBs) and on perovskite film surfaces, are known to be a major source of the notorious environmental instability of perovskite solar cells (PeSCs). Although passivating ionic defects is desirable, previous approaches using Lewis base or acid molecules as additives suppress only the negatively or positively charged defects, thus leaving oppositely charged defects. In this work, both the cationic and anionic defects inside methyl ammonium lead tri-iodide (MAPbI3 ) are simultaneously passivated by introducing a zwitterionic form of the amino acid, L-alanine, into the precursor solution as an additive. L-alanine has both positive (NH3 + ) and negative (COO- ) functional groups at a specific solvent pH, thereby passivating both the cation and anion defects in MAPbI3 . The addition of L-alanine increases the grain size of the perovskite crystals and lengthens the charge carrier lifetime (τ > 1 µs), leading to improved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 20.3% (from 18.3% without an additive) for small-area (4.64 mm2 ) devices and 15.6% (from 13.5%) for large-area submodules (9.06 cm2 ). More importantly, the authors' approach also significantly enhances the shelf storage and photoirradiation stabilities of PeSCs.

Printed polymer solar cells (PSCs) were demonstrated by doctor-blade coating a zinc oxide (ZnO) material, slot-die coating photoactive and PEDOT:PSS materials, and screen-printing a silver (Ag) electrode. To make a PEDOT:PSS film on a hydrophobic photoactive layer, we tried to modify various types of commercial PEDOT:PSSs (Clevios P, N 1005, S 305, AI 4083) with the surfactants Zonyl FS-300 and FS-31 (Capstone® Dupont™). The addition of the FS-31 surfactant successfully reduced the contact angle of PEDOT:PSS on the hydrophobic photoactive layer, and the wetting property was sufficiently developed, even using a slot-die coating method. A relatively thick PEDOT:PSS layer, Clevios P modified by FS-31, prevents the penetration of the Ag ink solvent into the photoactive layer. Accordingly, a power conversion efficiency of 4.06% was attained in the printed PSCs.

Despite recent dramatic enhancements in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) resulting in values over 10%, the manufacturing of tandem organic solar cells (OSCs) via current printing technologies is subject to tremendous challenges. Existing complicated tandem structures consisting of six or more component layers have been a major obstacle that significantly increases the complexity of printing processes and substantially sacrifices the PCE for printed devices. Here, an innovative printing method is reported that simplifies the fabrication process of the tandem OSCs. By developing a new printing technique using a nanocomposites containing interfacial and photoactive materials, a simultaneously printed bilayer of consisting of interfacial and photoactive layers, achieved through vertical self-organization, is successfully demonstrated, resulting in tandem OSCs with only four printed layers. Moreover, by rigorously controlling the molecular weight of the interfacial materials, the self-assembly characteristics are improved and an efficient tandem OSC is yielded with a PCE of 9.1% achieved in printed layers.

Recently, the most efficient tandem polymer solar cells (PSCs) have used poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) as a p-type component of recombination layer (RL). However, its undesirable acidic nature, originating from insulating PSS, ofPSS drastically reduces the lifetime of PSCs. Here, we demonstrate the efficient and stable tandem PSCs by introducing acid-free self-doped conducting polymer (SCP), combined with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), as RL forPSS-free tandem PSCs. Moreover, we introduce an innovative and versatile nanocomposite system containing photoactive and p-type conjugated polyelectrolyte (p-CPE) into the tandem fabrication of an ideal self-organized recombination layer. In our new RL, highly conductive SCP facilitates charge transport and recombination process, and p-CPE helps to achieve nearly loss-free charge collection by increasing effective work function of indium tin oxide (ITO) and SCP. Because of the synergistic effect of extremely low electrical resistance, ohmic contact, and pH neutrality, tandem devices with our novel RL performed well, exhibiting a high power conversion efficiency of 10.2% and a prolonged lifetime. These findings provide a new insight for strategic design of RLs using SCPs to achieve efficient and stable tandem PSCs and enable us to review and extend the usefulness of SCPs in various electronics research fields.

The fabrication of organic photovoltaic modules via printing techniques has been the greatest challenge for their commercial manufacture. Current module architecture, which is based on a monolithic geometry consisting of serially interconnecting stripe-patterned subcells with finite widths, requires highly sophisticated patterning processes that significantly increase the complexity of printing production lines and cause serious reductions in module efficiency due to so-called aperture loss in series connection regions. Herein we demonstrate an innovative module structure that can simultaneously reduce both patterning processes and aperture loss. By using a charge recombination feature that occurs at contacts between electron- and hole-transport layers, we devise a series connection method that facilitates module fabrication without patterning the charge transport layers. With the successive deposition of component layers using slot-die and doctor-blade printing techniques, we achieve a high module efficiency reaching 7.5% with area of 4.15 cm2., The fabrication of organic photovoltaic modules usually relies on patterning techniques which limit their efficiencies. Here, the authors propose a module structure that avoids the patterning steps, and use doctor-blade printing and slot-die coating to fabricate large-area modules reaching 7.5% efficiencies.

We devised an electrochemical patterning process for large-area perovskite photovoltaic modules., Realizing industrial-scale, large-area photovoltaic modules without any considerable performance losses compared with the performance of laboratory-scale, small-area perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been a challenge for practical applications of PSCs. Highly sophisticated patterning processes for achieving series connections, typically fabricated using printing or laser-scribing techniques, cause unexpected efficiency drops and require complicated manufacturing processes. We successfully fabricated high-efficiency, large-area PSC modules using a new electrochemical patterning process. The intrinsic ion-conducting features of perovskites enabled us to create metal-filamentary nanoelectrodes to facilitate the monolithic serial interconnections of PSC modules. By fabricating planar-type PSC modules through low-temperature annealing and all-solution processing, we demonstrated a notably high module efficiency of 14.0% for a total area of 9.06 cm2 with a high geometric fill factor of 94.1%.

The formation of pinhole-free perovskite photoactive films with full surface coverage has been a tremendous challenge for up-scaling planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) while maintaining their high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Particularly, a significant mismatch between the surface energies of a hydrophilic perovskite precursor solution and a hydrophobic organic charge transport layer (CTL) has been a major cause for the poor and random surface coverage of perovskite photoactive films, which drastically reduces the scalability and reproducibility of PSCs. Here, we report a universal method to create extremely compact perovskite photoactive films on a variety of hydrophobic CTLs. By introducing an amphiphilic conjugated polyelectrolyte as an interfacial compatibilizer, we succeed in improving the wettability of perovskite precursor solutions on hydrophobic CTLs and fabricating perovskite photoactive films over large areas. Our approach enables the scalable fabrication of planar PSCs with large areas (1 cm2, PCE of 17%) while preserving nearly 90% of the PCEs of the corresponding small-area devices (PCE of 19%).

We developed bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells (PSCs) by slot-die coating a poly(3-hexylthiophene):fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) composites with various solvents, such as chlorobenzene (CB), dichlorobenzene (DCB), or a CB/DCB co-solvent. To understand the effect of solvent on the uniform active layer film coating and charge carrier recombination, we characterized the coated films with UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, and analyzed the measured light intensity dependence of the cells׳ short-circuit current density ( J s c ) and open-circuit voltage ( V o c ) . The PSC with the active layer that was made with a CB/DCB co-solvent shows better uniform film quality and power conversion efficiency (PCE) due to its relatively small bimolecular and trap-assisted recombination. Finally, we successfully fabricated a uniform large-area PSC module from P3HT:PCBM with a CB/DCB co-solvent system, which shows a PCE of 1.73% under the condition of air mass 1.5.

A new architecture for manufacturing large-area polymer solar cells that does not produce concomitant aperture and Ohmic losses is presented. By introducing the innovative concept of metal-filamentary nanoelectrodes, which are vertically formed inside the main active layers, loss-free, widely expandable solar cells with the highest relative power conversion efficiency (ca. 90%) in organic photovoltaic systems are demonstrated.

Slot-die coating is one of the promising methods for fabricating large-area polymer solar cells (PSCs) due to its compatibility with roll-to-roll printing and one-dimensional direct patterning. In this study, we investigated correlations between conformal film morphology of intermixed poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) material and universal control factors such as shim length, substrate temperature, and coating speed. The observed correlation equation is better matched to the meniscus coating parameter equation rather than to the traditional high-viscosity extrusion slot-die coating parameter equation. Based on our findings regarding the governing factors of the thin film formation of bulk-heterojunction materials, we demonstrated the development of uniform large-area polymer solar cells with power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.07% under Air Mass 1.5condition and the possibility of high-throughput production.

Despite the high expectation of deformable and see-through displays for future ubiquitous society, current light-emitting diodes (LEDs) fail to meet the desired mechanical and optical properties, mainly because of the fragile transparent conducting oxides and opaque metal electrodes. Here, by introducing a highly conductive nanofibrillated conducting polymer (CP) as both deformable transparent anode and cathode, ultraflexible and see-through polymer LEDs (PLEDs) are demonstrated. The CP-based PLEDs exhibit outstanding dual-side light-outcoupling performance with a high optical transmittance of 75% at a wavelength of 550 nm and with an excellent mechanical durability of 9% bending strain. Moreover, the CP-based PLEDs fabricated on 4 µm thick plastic foils with all-solution processing have extremely deformable and foldable light-emitting functionality. This approach is expected to open a new avenue for developing wearable and attachable transparent displays.

As part of an ongoing investigation into the development of a dental digital radiographic (DDR) system using a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor, this study developed hardware and software with a graphical user interface to acquire and display intra-oral images from a prototype DDR system. The aim of this study was to develop a DDR system using a CMOS sensor and evaluate its characteristics. Electrical signals that were generated by the CMOS sensor were transformed into digital images by a control computer equipped using a USB board. The distance between the X-ray tube and the CMOS sensor was adjusted within the range of 10-40 cm to provide the optimal image quality. In order to evaluate the image quality according to variations in the dose, phantom images (60 kVp, 7 mA) were obtained at exposure times of 0.03, 0.05, 0.08, 0.10, and 0.12 s, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was calculated from the phantom image data. The modulation transfer function (MTF) was obtained from a Fourier transform of the line spread function, which was itself derived from the edge spread function of a sharp edge image acquired using the exposure conditions of 60 kVp, 7 mA, and 0.08 s exposure time. The best contrast and focus were obtained at 20 cm. The SNR level was found to increase with increasing exposure time ranging from 0.03 to 0.08 s. The results obtained at 10% of the MTF showed that the resolution of the DDR system was approximately 6.2 line pairs per millimeter. The characteristics of the prototype DDR system have potential applications in intra-oral dental radiographic imaging. The fully developed DDR system can be used for making a clinical diagnosis with further improvements in the acquisition time and spatial resolution.

N-Substituted succinamic acid beta-sitosteryl ester derivatives were prepared and evaluated. Compounds 1 and 2 were prepared in 76-92% yields by the reaction of beta-sitosterol and succinic anhydride, followed by the activation of the resulting acid compound 1 by thionyl chloride or methyl chloroformate, and finally by amination with appropriate amines. Compound 2a (DANA87) was also easily obtained in one step by the direct addition of beta-sitosterol to dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) in 80% yield. Administration of the dietary compound DANA87 resulted in significant decreases in total plasma cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentrations compared with controls in a rat model. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol and plasma triglyceride levels were not affected. These findings indicate that DANA87 functions as TC and LDL cholesterol-reducing agent.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quantitative accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) rendered images acquired with multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) by means of distance measurements of a dry human skull for various slice thicknesses and acquisition modes. A radiologist directly measured the distance of line items on the skull surface to establish reference "gold standards." The skull specimen was scanned with a MDCT with various scanning parameters (slice thicknesses and acquisition modes). The use of X-ray computed microtomography (PCT) has increased in biomedical research and industrial applications. The inherited high quality of synchrotron radiation (SR) X-rays including high flux, collimation, and coherence, has been used recently to produce radiographic images with high spatial resolution and contrast. A simple and stable imaging system using an unmonochromatized SR source based on the principle of phase contrast X-ray imaging consists of a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector coupled with an optical lens system at the Pohang Light Source (PLS) 5C1 beamline. The spatial resolution of the imaging system was determined using the modulation transfer function (MTF), which was measured by step-by step calculations obtained from sharp edge images. Projection image data were obtained at 250 steps over 180 degrees of rotation with an acquisition time, depending on the imaged object materials, of 30 to 150 ms per projection image. The tomographic images were reconstructed using a simple filtered backprojection algorithm to reconstruct two-dimensional (2-D) images using projection data which may include characteristics of beam collimation and phase contrast. Although the use of a monochromatic X-ray beam has previously demonstrated to provide high resolution and enhanced contrast, our approach uses an unmonochromatized SR X-ray beam and shows similar image capability, without the needs for sophisticated X-ray optics, in an exposure time which is significantly less, by two orders of magnitude, than that for the monochromatic SR system. The current PLS 5C1 SR imaging system can produce projection images at a spatial resolution of 8.3 /spl mu/m over a field of view of about 5 mm at an exposure time of 30 ms per projection image for 1.5 /spl times/ optical magnification. This study presents the results of SR /spl mu/CT images of cancerous human breast tissue containing microcalcifications, mouse lumbar vertebra, and mouse coccygeal vertebra. The unmonochromatized SR /spl mu/CT imaging system provides an effective means of evaluating microstructures, not only in biomedical specimens but also in inorganic samples.

Despite recent breakthroughs in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), which have resulted in PCEs exceeding 22%, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still face serious drawbacks in terms of their printability, reliability, and stability. The most efficient PSC architecture, which is based on titanium dioxide as an electron transport layer, requires an extremely high-temperature sintering process (≈500 °C), reveals hysterical discrepancies in the device measurement, and suffers from performance degradation under light illumination. These drawbacks hamper the practical development of PSCs fabricated via a printing process on flexible plastic substrates. Herein, an innovative method to fabricate low-temperature-processed, hysteresis-free, and stable PSCs with a large area up to 1 cm2 is demonstrated using a versatile organic nanocomposite that combines an electron acceptor and a surface modifier. This nanocomposite forms an ideal, self-organized electron transport layer (ETL) via a spontaneous vertical phase separation, which leads to hysteresis-free, planar heterojunction PSCs with stabilized PCEs of over 18%. In addition, the organic nanocomposite concept is successfully applied to the printing process, resulting in a PCE of over 17% in PSCs with printed ETLs.

Despite the recent unprecedented increase in the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of small-area devices (≤0.1 cm2 ), the PCEs deteriorate drastically for PSCs of larger areas because of the incomplete film coverage caused by the dewetting of the hydrophilic perovskite precursor solutions on the hydrophobic organic charge-transport layers (CTLs). Here, an innovative method of fabricating scalable PSCs on all types of organic CTLs is reported. By introducing an amphiphilic conjugated polyelectrolyte as an interfacial compatibilizer, fabricating uniform perovskite films on large-area substrates (18.4 cm2 ) and PSCs with the total active area of 6 cm2 (1 cm2 × 6 unit cells) via a single-turn solution process is successfully demonstrated. All of the unit cells exhibit highly uniform PCEs of 16.1 ± 0.9% (best PCE of 17%), which is the highest value for printable PSCs with a total active area larger than 1 cm2 .

Due to the short diffusion length of approximately 10 nm of an exciton in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) comprising electron donors and acceptors, a formation with well phase-separated nanomorphology in BHJ films has been one of the most important issues in achieving efficient charge separation and extraction in OSCs. By adding a small amount of a high boiling point solvent or molecules to a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solution, processing additive techniques have recently begun to offer an attractive and efficient method for controlling the nanoscale BHJ morphology of state-of-the-art OSCs with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding approximately 11%. However, it remains unknown whether the effect of processing additives can potentially pave the way for the ongoing development of various BHJ components and the commercialization of OSCs. Here, recent progress in understanding and developing the effects of processing additives on OSCs is highlighted. This overview suggests possible guidelines for a wide range of BHJ components with respect to morphological/structural evolution. Furthermore, the rational correlations among processing additives, BHJ components, and fabrication technologies and the performance of high-performance and low-cost OSCs are discussed along with future commercialization prospects.

Vertically self-assembled bilayers with an interfacial bottom layer and a photoactive top layer are demonstrated via a single coating step of a blend composed of an amine-containing nonconjugated polyelectrolyte (NPE) and an organic electron donor–acceptor bulk heterojunction composite. The self-assembled NPE layer reduces the work function of an indium tin oxide (ITO) cathode, which leads to efficient inverted organic solar cells without any additional interface engineering of the ITO.

As a part of the development of a dental digital radiographic (DDR) system using a CMOS sensor, we developed hardware and software based on a graphical user interface (GUI) to acquire and display intra-oral images. The aims of this study were to develop the DDR system and evaluate its physical properties. Electric signals generated from the CMOS sensor were transformed to digital images through a control computer equipped with a USB board. The distance between the X-ray tube and the CMOS sensor was varied between 10-40 cm for optimal image quality. To evaluate the image quality according to dose variance, phantom images (60 kVp, 7 mA) were obtained at 0.03, 0.05, 0.08, 0.10, and 0.12 s of exposure time and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was calculated form the phantom image data. The modulation transfer function (MTF) was obtained as the Fourier transform of the line spread function (LSF), a derivative of the edge spread function (ESF) of sharp edge images acquired at exposure conditions of 60 kVp and 0.56 mA. The most compatible contrast and distinct focal point length was recorded at 20 cm. The resolution of the DDR system was approximately 6.2 line pair per mm. The developed DDR system could be used for clinical diagnosis with improvement of acquisition time and resolution. Measurement of other physical factors such as detected quantum efficiency (DQE) would be necessary to evaluate the physical properties of the DDR system.

This study evaluated the quantitative measurements of three-dimensional (3D) volume images using multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) and one skull specimen. Twenty-one linear distances were measured five times each by vernier caliper. A dry human skull was imaged with MDCT for various acquisition parameters at slice thicknesses of 1.25, 2.50, 3.75, and 5.00 mm for the different acquisition modes of axial and spiral scan. The distance of each corresponding item displayed on 3D rendered images was measured seven times by an uninvolved observer using a 3D software tool. Data analysis was performed to determine if there were any statistically significant differences in acquisition parameters. No significant image differences were found among the scan modes for each slice thickness. For a given scan mode, acquisition slice thickness was the important factor for quantitative measurement of 3D rendered CT images.
