Introduction: Rhythm disorders (RDs) or arrhythmias are poor prognostic factors during heart failure (HF). Our objective was to study the frequency of rhythm disorders presented by patients treated for HF in Parakou, Benin in 2017. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study. It consisted of a systematic recruitment of all patients admitted for heart failure in the cardiology units of the city of Parakou from March to August 2017. The diagnosis of RDs was made by cardiac auscultation completed by electrocardiographic recording (standard and Holter over 24 hours). The Lown classification was used to describe the severity of ventricular TRs. The threshold for significance was p < 5%. Results: A total of 83 heart failure patients aged 61.47 ± 15.97 years with a sex ratio of 1.08 were selected. Arrhythmia was detected by auscultation in 20.48%; by standard electrocardiogram (ECG) in 25.83% and by Holter ECG in 97.59% of patients. Among the arrhythmias detected by Holter ECG, 81.48% were atrial, including 28.79% of atrial fibrillation. RDs was ventricular in 90.12% of which 47.95% were severe. Left ventricular systolic dysfunction was significantly associated with ventricular arrhythmias. On the other hand, the frequency of ventricular arrhythmias was not associated with the severity of the HF according to the NYHA classification. Conclusion: In Parakou, RDs are frequent in patients with HF. Holter ECG should be included in the follow-up of heart failure patients in order to improve their management.

Aims: To describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices of health care personnel regarding venous thromboembolic disease prophylaxis (VTE) in the hospital setting to Parakou in 2017. Study Design: A descriptive cross-sectional study with prospective data collection. Place and Duration of Study: Departments of medicine and medical specialties, Departments of surgery and surgical specialties, Departments of gyneco-obstetrics and intensive care at the Hospital University of Parakou (CHUD-B), in northern Benin, between February 2017 and May 2017. Methodology: We included all health professionals working in these services who consented to participate. The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) guidelines for the management of VTE were used as the reference for the assessment of knowledge, attitudes and practices. The evaluation form consisted of two parts, one addressed to physicians and the other to paramedics. The data were analyzed with SPSS 21 software with a significance level of 5% for comparisons. Results: A total of 223 health workers participated in the study. The knowledge level of the health workers was good in 52.47%, attitudes were correct in 37.67% and practices were adequate in 4.32%. Overall, health professionals had a good knowledge-attitude-practice (KAP) score in 5.83% of the cases. Factors significantly associated with a good overall KAP score were practice on medical departments, continuing education of staff, status of doctors, knowledge of VTE guidelines and existence of VTE prevention protocols. Conclusion: Venous thromboembolic disease prophylaxis is moderately known by the health care personnel in Parakou, but attitudes and practices are not satisfactory. This highlights the need for continuous training.

La traduction a des principes et techniques pour sa pratique, et ceci devient intéressant lorsque l’on maîtrise ces techniques pour la traduction des langues. Mais, le problème du niveau de langue est un facteur majeur dans ce processus car il est toujours un handicap à une traduction réussie. L’objectif de cette étude est de discuter et d’analyser les principes et techniques de la pratique de la traduction pour étudier les fonctions de chaque processus et techniques. La recherche est faite avec un questionnaire distribué aux étudiants de la deuxième année de BAPES 1 anglais à l’Ecole Normale Supérieure de Porto-Novo. Un test leur a été aussi distribué pour traduction afin que nous apprécions le niveau de maîtrise des principes et pratiques de la traduction. Les résultats obtenus que lorsque les étudiants comprennent réellement les principes et la pratique technique de la traduction, ils produisent meilleurs résultats alors qu’en absence du respect des procédures, la production des étudiants en langue d’arrivée est mauvaise. Le chercheur a suggéré cependant que les étudiants doivent recevoir un meilleur enseignement des principes et techniques de la pratique de la traduction pour une traduction acceptable de la langue de départ à la langue source

Hypertension is the strongest cardiovascular risk factor worldwide. May Measurement Month (MMM) is an international campaign for blood pressure (BP) screening initiated by the International Society of Hypertension. This work aims to estimate the proportion and the levels of awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension in participants of the MMM survey in Benin in 2018. A cross-sectional survey focused on people aged ≥18 years was conducted in May 2018 in nine rural and urban areas in Benin. A sampling of volunteers was done. BP was measured following the MMM protocol. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mm Hg and/or a diastolic BP ≥90 mm Hg (mean of the second and third readings) and/or taking antihypertensive medication. Linear regression was used to identify BP associations. A total of 2035 people were screened, including 55.9% women. The mean age was 44.2 ± 15.9 years. The percentage with hypertension was 35.4%. Introduction: Hypertension disorders of pregnancy are one of the leading causes of maternal and fetal deaths. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of hypertension among pregnant women having participated in the STEPS survey in Benin in 2015. Methods: This was a database analysis. STEPS survey included consenting adults aged 18 to 69 years, living in Benin for at least 6 months prior to the survey. The participants were selected in households by a three-stage random sampling technique. The World Health Organization (WHO) STEPS instrument was used for data collection. After an individual interview with the participant at home, blood pressure was measured according to WHO recommendations. Pregnant women database was extracted for analysis. A multivariable logistic regression was done for associated factors identification. Results: A total of 2800 women (out of 5127 people) participated in the STEPS study of which 240 declared to be pregnant. The mean age was 28.9 ± 6.8 years. The prevalence of hypertension was 13.3%. Severe hypertension represented 2.9%. Hypertension during pregnancy was associated with primary school education level (compared to none, adjusted OR = 0.3, 95% CI [0.1 - 0.9], p = 0.042). No significant association was found with behavioral factors. Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension during pregnancy is high in Benin. In-depth studies and targeted interventions for prevention should be implemented.

Introduction: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are often accompanied by cardiovascular sequelae. The objective of this study was to describe the prognosis in the postpartum period of patients with HDP in Departmental University Hospital of Borgou CHUD-B from Parakou in 2020. Methods: The study was prospective with a descriptive and analytical design and was conducted from January 2020 to September 2020. Patients with HDP were recruited from the gynecology-obstetrics department and each followed for 3 months in the cardiology department. HDP was classified according to the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy, and blood pressure (BP) was taken according to WHO recommendations. Self-measurement of BP at home was performed to assess blood pressure control outside the hospital. Epidata 3.1 and SPSS 21 software were used for data processing and analysis. P values Results: During the study period, the hospital frequency of HDP was 15.6%. The frequency of maternal complications in the postpartum period was 28% (severe hypertension: 23.2%; eclampsia: 3.6%; puerperal psychosis: 1.2%). At the end of the three-month follow-up, blood pressure returned to normal in 73.2% of cases; it persisted in 26.8% of women. Factors associated with persistence of hypertension after multivariate analysis were, overweight/obesity RRa 8.664 [1.566 - 47.941], (p = 0.013); family history of hypertension RRa 6.499 [1.493 - 28.289], (p = 0.013); history of hypertension in previous pregnancies RRa 7.764 [1.561 - 38.601], (p Conclusion: The frequency of HDP is not negligible at CHUD-B/A. The evolution of these HDP was marked in more than a quarter of cases by complications in the postpartum period followed by a persistence of hypertension 3 months after childbirth predicted by cardiovascular risk factors.

Introduction We previously reported that fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)‐klotho signaling plays a role in B cell immunity. Despite high serum levels of FGF23, a decline in immunity is frequently observed in patients on hemodialysis (HD); thus, abnormalities in the FGF23‐klotho signaling pathway in immune cells may occur in these patients. Methods We analyzed the number of klotho‐positive cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 10 male and 6 female patients on HD and 5 healthy male subjects using flow cytometry. We analyzed the abundance of cleaved klotho protein in the murine B cell line, A20, and in the serum of HD patients and healthy subjects (HS) using flow cytometry and Western blotting. The serum level of A disintegrin and metalloprotease 17 (ADAM17) was measured in HD patients and HS using enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Results The number of klotho‐positive B cells was reduced in HD patients. Serum ADAM17 was responsible for the reduction in klotho, as a specific ADAM17 inhibitor reversed this change. The total serum levels of ADAM17 were similar in HD patients and HS; however, activated ADAM17 was increased in the serum of HD patients. Conclusions We concluded that abnormal ADAM17 activation could contribute to the immunocompromised status in patients on HD, in line with the reported role of ADAM17 as an anti‐inflammatory and immunosuppressive factor., Klotho expression of lymphocyte was lower in the uremic patients (hemodialysis patient) than in healthy subjects, which was one of the causes for a decrease in a number of lymphocyte and immunocompromised status in uremic patients. It was one of the causes for the lower expression of klotho in lymphocyte of the patient that activated A disintegrin and metalloprotease 17 cleavaged klotho in lymphocyte.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine the cardiovascular eligibility rate for hormonal contraception among women in Porto-Novo, with reference to the criteria defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016 over a period of 4 months at the headquarters of the Beninese Association for the Family Promotion (ABPF) in Porto-Novo, Benin. It exhaustively included all women who came to renew their hormonal contraception. The verification procedure useful for the renewal of the contraceptive used included the search for cardiovascular risk factors (high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, obesity, smoking). Based on the eligibility criteria defined by WHO for each type of contraceptive and on the presence or absence of the risk factors sought, each woman surveyed was declared eligible or ineligible for continuation of the contraceptive in progress.

Reported ranges of normal values are mostly issued from studies performed with Caucasians. This study is a part of TAHES, a population-based prospective cohort study in Benin and aims to establish normal reference values for echocardiographic diameters of the proximal aorta in Africans.Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) examinations were performed by four cardiologists following pre-defined protocols, and analyzed off-line by a single observer. Aortic root diameters were measured during diastole for sinuses of Vasalva (SV), sinotubular junction (STJ) and proximal ascending aorta (AA), and during systole for annulus. Upper limits were defined as the 95th percentiles.We included 513 normotensive, non-diabetic, and cardiovascular disease-free individuals (206 men, 307 women, age 40 ± 14 years). The diameters of the proximal aorta were significantly greater in men. The inner-edge-to-inner-edge non-indexed upper values for the annulus, SV, STJ and AA were respectively 25, 34, 28.5, 32 mm in men and 22, 30, 26, 30 mm in women. The leading-edge-to-leading-edge upper values were respectively 38, 35, 36 for men and 34, 33, 32 mm for women. No significant differences between sexes were recorded for body surface area (BSA)-indexed diameters of the annulus, STJ and AA. BSA-indexed SV dimension was greater in men than women were. SV, STJ, AA indexed-diameters correlated with age in both sexes but not for annulus indexed-diameter.Normal values from a general population in West Africa could to differ from those established in Caucasian populations. Ethnic-specific reference diameters are here proposed for appropriate diagnosis of proximal aortic diseases in sub-Saharan Africa.

Hypertension constitutes a major health concern worldwide and particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global initiative of the International Society of Hypertension for raising awareness of high blood pressure (BP). This work aims to determine the prevalence, awareness and levels of treatment and control of hypertension among adults participating in the MMM Campaign in Benin in 2019 (MMM19). A cross-sectional survey including volunteers aged ≥18 years was carried out in June 2019 in 13 rural and urban areas in Benin. BP measurement followed the MMM19 protocol. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mmHg, or a diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg (based on the mean of the second and third readings) or taking antihypertensive medication. A total of 3637 people were screened with a female predominance (61.4%) and a mean age of 44.4 ± 16.1 years. A total of 1363 (37.5%) participants had hypertension. Of 1363 participants with hypertension: 64.5% were aware of their status and 43.9% were taking antihypertensive medication. Among 598 participants taking anti-hypertensive medication, 34.9% had controlled BP (systolic BP
