Abstract Background Pectus carinatum (PC) mainly present at the growth spurt time of the early teenage years or the puberty. Poor outer appearance is a major reason for seeking help for surgeons to increase self-confidence and self-esteem. At present, minimally invasive repair (MIR) is one of effective ways to correct the chest wall deformity. Therefore, there is great practical significance to conduct clinical research on MIR about the adolescent PC. Methods We applied Abramson procedure in PC group or we applied Abramson procedure and Nuss procedure in PC/PE group. We retrospectively reviewed the results of 41 cases who underwent the surgical correction at our department from January 2020 to April 2023. Results All the procedures were successfully done without severe complications. The median operation Time was 80 min in PC group while was 130 min in PC/PE group. The median LOS were 4 days in PC group while 5 days in PC/PE group. The median compression depth was 32 mm in PC group while 12 mm in PC/PE group. Postoperatively, there are some complications. All Pneumothorax patients being treated conservatively were found in 9 patients in two groups. One patient suffered overcorrection after operation. There were 3 patients suffered steel wires breakage in two groups. One patient reoperation postoperatively for the dislocation of the bar secondary to steel wires breakage. Conclusions The Abramson procedure or Abramson procedure and Nuss procedure have good short-term results in repair PC and PC/PE. Select one or two procedures should be done individually based on whether the lower plane over depressed after Abramson procedure.

The accurate three-dimensional wind field obtained from a Doppler lidar not only helps to comprehend the refined structure of complex airflow but also provides important and valuable solutions for many fields. However, the underlying homogeneity assumption of the typical wind retrieval methods, such as Doppler Beam Swinging (DBS) and Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) based on a single-lidar, will introduce the measurement uncertainty in complex terrain. In this paper, a new design of a wind measurement campaign involving seven lidars was carried out, which contained the three-lidar-based Virtual Tower (VT) using a time-space synchronization technique and four single-lidars with different elevation angles. This study investigates the performance of VT and VAD measurements under various conditions and evaluates the sensitivity of wind measurement uncertainty of VAD to the horizontal spatial- and probe volume-average effects associated with elevation angles of the laser beam. The inter-comparison results between VT and four VADs show consistent trends with small relative errors under neutral atmospheric conditions with weak wind velocity. Under convective or high Turbulence Intensity (TI) conditions, the relative errors between VT and VAD become larger and more fluctuant. Moreover, it is found that the measurement uncertainty of VAD increases at a given elevation angle with the increasing measurement heights, which is caused by the horizontal homogeneity associated with the conical scanning area. Additionally, the simulated and measured results of four VADs indicate that a larger elevation angle corresponds to a lower measurement uncertainty for a given height.

Aircraft wake vortices are serious threats to aviation safety. The Pulsed Coherent Doppler Lidar (PCDL) has been widely used in the observation of aircraft wake vortices due to its advantages of high spatial-temporal resolution and high precision. However, the post-processing algorithms require significant computing resources, which cannot achieve the real-time detection of a wake vortex (WV). This paper presents an improved Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) method for WV locating and grading based on PCDL data to avoid the influence of unstable ambient wind fields on the localization and classification results of WV. Typical WV cases are selected for analysis, and the WV locating and grading models are validated on different test sets. The consistency of the analytical algorithm and the CNN algorithm is verified. The results indicate that the improved CNN method achieves satisfactory recognition accuracy with higher efficiency and better robustness, especially in the case of strong turbulence, where the CNN method recognizes the wake vortex while the analytical method cannot. The improved CNN method is expected to be applied to optimize the current aircraft spacing criteria, which is promising in terms of aviation safety and economic benefit improvement.

Parity-time (PT) symmetry has garnered significant attention in the field of photonics owing to its remarkable properties. High-performance lasers, which require simultaneous gain and loss, serve as an ideal platform for harnessing the exceptional properties of PT symmetry. In this study, we present and experimentally verify a polarimetric PT-symmetry fiber laser that uses a polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg grating (PM-FBG). This design allows for tunable, switchable dual-wavelength operation with narrow linewidth and orthogonal single-polarization characteristics. By converting two equal-length yet distinct polarization states into two spatial subspaces sharing a common wavelength space, we can achieve PT symmetry. Regulating the polarization controllers (PCs) enables interconversion between PT-symmetry phases. During the PT-symmetric phase (or PT exact phase), a dual-wavelength laser is realized with wavelength fluctuations below 0.098 nm and power fluctuations below 2.175 dB. At this stage, light propagates through both ordinary and extraordinary wavelength-spaces. During the PT-broken phase, one waveguide has a net gain and the other incurs a net loss, leading to a single longitudinal mode (SLM) laser output. The wavelength and power fluctuations of left-wavelength λ1 and right-wavelength λ2 remain below 0.002 nm and 0.770 dB over a 20-minute period, during single-wavelength operation. By adjusting the axial strain on the PM-FBG, the laser output can be tuned within the wavelength range of 1549.754 nm to 1551.690 nm, while maintaining a linewidth variation of less than 0.130 kHz. As the wavelength is adjusted, the azimuth sum of λ1 and λ2 consistently remains close to 90 degrees, accompanied by degrees of polarizations exceeding 99%.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of mortality with an estimated half a billion people affected in 2019. However, detecting signals between specific pathophysiology and coronary plaque phenotypes using complex multi-omic discovery datasets remains challenging due to the diversity of individuals and their risk factors. Given the complex cohort heterogeneity present in those with coronary artery disease (CAD), we illustrate several different methods, both knowledge-guided and data-driven approaches, for identifying subcohorts of individuals with subclinical CAD and distinct metabolomic signatures. We then demonstrate that utilizing these subcohorts can improve the prediction of subclinical CAD and can facilitate the discovery of novel biomarkers of subclinical disease. Analyses acknowledging cohort heterogeneity through identifying and utilizing these subcohorts may be able to advance our understanding of CVD and provide more effective preventative treatments to reduce the burden of this disease in individuals and in society as a whole.

This paper describes a novel compact fiber sensor with high sensitivity for the simultaneous measurement of underwater salinity and temperature by simulation. The structure is based on a highly birefringent, asymmetric, full-circular hole photonic crystal fiber (HB-A-FCH PCF), which achieves the birefringence value of 2.83 × 10-3 at the wavelength of 2.2 µm. In addition, with ethanol-filled specific air holes, the temperature sensitivity of HB-A-FCH PCF is remarkably improved. Therefore, considering the high birefringence property, we simulate a Michelson interferometer-based sensor setup with air holes as fluid microchannels and simultaneously measure salinity and temperature through the spectral responses of the x- and y-polarization state. Theoretical analysis shows the sensor can achieve the salinity and temperature sensitivity up to 5.1472 nm/% and −0.8987 nm/°C in x-polarized fundamental mode, respectively, whereas the salinity and temperature sensitivity up to 4.5386 nm/% and −0.8000 nm/°C in y-polarized fundamental mode, respectively.

A 1550 nm all-fiber dual-polarization coherent Doppler lidar (DPCDL) was constructed to measure the depolarization ratio of atmospheric aerosols. In lidar systems, the polarization state of the laser source is typically required to be that of linearly parallel polarization. However, due to the influence of the fiber-optical transmission and the large-mode field output of the telescope, the laser polarization state changes. Hence, a polarizer was mounted to the emitting channel of the telescope to eliminate the depolarization effect. A fiber-optical polarization beam splitter divided the backscattered light into components with parallel and perpendicular polarization. The DPCDL used two coherent channels to receive each of these two polarization components. A calibration procedure was designed for the depolarization ratio to determine the differences in gain and non-responsiveness in the two polarization channels. The calibration factor was found to be 1.13. Additionally, the systematic error and the measured random error of the DPCDL were estimated to evaluate the performance of the system. The DPCDL’s systematic error was found to be about 0.0024, and the standard deviation was lower than 0.0048. The Allan deviations of a 1-min averaging window with a low SNR of 19 dB and a high SNR of 27 dB were 0.0104 and 0.0031, respectively. The random errors at different measured heights were mainly distributed below 0.015. To confirm the authenticity of the atmospheric depolarization ratio measured with the DPCDL, two field observations were conducted with the use of a co-located DPCDL and micro-pulse polarization lidar to perform a comparison. The results showed that the correlation coefficients of the aerosol depolarization ratios were 0.73 and 0.77, respectively. Moreover, the two continuous observations demonstrated the robustness and stability of the DPCDL. The depolarization ratios were detected in different weather conditions.

In this paper, we propose and design a magnetic field and temperature sensor using a novel petaloid photonic crystal fiber filled with magnetic fluid. The PCF achieves a high birefringence of more than 1.43 × 10−2 at the wavelength of 1550 nm via the design of material parameters, air hole shape and the distribution of the photonic crystal fiber. Further, in order to significantly improve the sensitivity of the sensor, the magnetic-fluid-sensitive material is injected into the pores of the designed photonic crystal fiber. Finally, the sensor adopts a Mach–Zehnder interferometer structure combined with the ultra-high birefringence of the proposed petaloid photonic crystal fiber. Magnetic field and temperature can be simultaneously measured via observing the spectral response of the x-polarization state and y-polarization state. As indicated via simulation analysis, the sensor can realize sensitivities to magnetic fields and temperatures at −1.943 nm/mT and 0.0686 nm/°C in the x-polarization state and −1.421 nm/mT and 0.0914 nm/°C in the y-polarization state. The sensor can realize the measurement of multiple parameters including temperature and magnetic intensity and has the advantage of high sensitivity.

We report a dual-wavelength fiber laser sensor based on a uniform fiber Bragg grating (UFBG) and a Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film-coated long-period grating (LPG) as sensor probe for simultaneous detection of relative humidity (RH) and temperature. Two UFBGs and the LPG were inscribed in three single mode fibers utilizing phase/amplitude mask technology and mobile scanning technique via the 248 nm UV laser. In our experiment, the RH function based on the differential intensity measurement at dual-wavelength output from 30% to 85% is in a quadratic equation, and the RH sensitivity coefficient of 0.358 dB/% shows good linear relationship and stability from 55% to 85%. Meanwhile, the temperature sensitivity coefficients based on wavelength detection and differential intensity detection are 9.1 pm/°C and 0.21 dB/°C, respectively. The structure of dual-wavelength fiber laser sensor with high signal to noise ratio (SNR), narrow spectral width and good stability enables simultaneous measurement of the RH and temperature with high accuracy and good repeatability.

A single longitudinal mode (SLM) dual-wavelength switchable erbium-doped fiber laser (DW-EDFL) based on polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg grating Fabry–Perot cavity (PMFBG-FP) cascaded multiple sub-ring cavities (MSCs) is proposed. A PMFBG-FP with a narrow-band transmission peak and MSCs was implemented as an optical filter to achieve stable dual-wavelength laser output and guaranteed SLM status. By stretching the PMFBG, a highly stable dual-wavelength tunable output could be achieved with a maximum tuning interval of 0.17 nm. The optical signal-to-noise-ratio (OSNR) at dual-wavelength lasing was higher than 57 dB, and the optimal wavelength and power fluctuations within 0.5 h were 0.01 nm and 0.79 dB, respectively. Meanwhile, the measured linewidths of each wavelength were 1.55 kHz and 1.65 kHz, respectively. The measured polarization states of the two laser wavelengths were linear and orthogonal, with a degree of polarization (DOP) of nearly 100%.

Huaneng Rudong 300 MW offshore wind farm project is located in eastern China. The wake effect is one of the major concerns for wind farm operators, as all 70 units are plotted in ranks, and the sea surface roughness is low. This paper investigated the wake intensity by combining a field test and a numerical simulation. To carry out further yaw optimization, a Gaussian wake model was adopted. Firstly, a 3D Light Detection and Ranging device (LiDAR) was used to capture the features in both horizontal and vertical directions of the wake. It indicated that Gaussian wake model can precisely predict the characteristics under time average and steady state in the wind farm. The predicted annual energy production (AEP) of the whole wind farm by the Gaussian model is compared with the calculation result of the actuator line (AL)-based LES method, and the difference between the two methods is mostly under 10%.

The direct and indirect radiation forcing of aerosol particles deeply affect the energy budget and the atmospheric chemical and physical processes. To retrieve the vertical aerosol mass fluxes and to investigate the vertical transport process of aerosol by a coherent Doppler lidar (CDL), a practical method for instrumental calibration and aerosol optical properties retrieval based on CDL and sun photometer synchronization observations has been developed. A conversion of aerosol optical properties to aerosol microphysical properties is achieved by applying a well-developed algorithm. Furthermore, combining the vertical velocity measured simultaneously with a CDL, we use the eddy covariance (EC) method to retrieve the vertical turbulent aerosol mass fluxes by a CDL and sun photometer with a spatial resolution of 15 m and a temporal resolution of 1 s throughout the planetary boundary layer (PBL). In this paper, we present a measurement case of 24-h continuous fluxes observations and analyze the diurnal variation of the vertical velocity, the aerosol backscatter coefficient at 1550 nm, the mean aerosol mass concentration, and the vertical aerosol mass fluxes on 13 April 2020. Finally, the main relative errors in aerosol mass flux retrieval, including sample error σF,S, aerosol optical properties retrieval error σF,R, and error introduced from aerosol microphysical properties retrieval algorithm σF,I, are evaluated. The sample error σF,S is the dominating error which increases with height except during 12:00–13:12 LST. The aerosol optical properties retrieval error σF,R is 21% and the error introduced from the aerosol microphysical properties retrieval algorithm σF,I is less than 50%.

Quantification of the horizontal patterns of phytoplankton and the distribution of suspended particles across the sea’s surface has been greatly improved by traditional passive oceanic color remote sensing technology. Lidar technology has already been proven to be effective positive remote sensing technology to construct high-resolution bathymetry models. Lidar technology significantly improves our ability to model biogeochemical processes in the upper ocean and provides advanced concepts regarding the vertical distribution of suspended particles and oceanic optical properties. In this paper, we present a novel optical approach to measuring the scattering intensity and characteristics of suspended particles within small angles backwards and distinguish water medium with different attenuation coefficients by a laboratory demonstration of the ocean Scheimpflug lidar system. The approach allows the direct determination of the scattering intensity over a small angle at the backward direction (175.8~178.8°) with an angular resolution of 0.38. Corrections for the effects of refraction at the air-glass-water interface were demonstrated. The data production (initial width and width attenuation rate of the laser beam) of the ocean Scheimpflug lidar system were utilized to distinguish water with different algae concentrations. Application for the measurement of backward scattering intensity and laser beam width were explored in distances up to several meters with spatial resolutions of millimeter precision.

Among the various challenges that spaceborne radar observations of the ocean face, the following two issues are probably of a higher priority: inadequate dynamic resolution, and ineffective vertical penetration. It is therefore the vision of the National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology of China that two highly anticipated breakthroughs in the coming decade are likely to be associated with radar interferometry and ocean lidar (OL) technology, which are expected to make a substantial contribution to a submesoscale-resolving and depth-resolving observation of the ocean. As an expanded follow-up of SWOT and an oceanic counterpart of CALIPSO, the planned “Guanlan” science mission comprises a dual-frequency (Ku and Ka) interferometric altimetry (IA), and a near-nadir pointing OL. Such an unprecedented combination of sensor systems has at least three prominent advantages. (i) The dual-frequency IA ensures a wider swath and a shorter repeat cycle which leads to a significantly improved temporal and spatial resolution up to days and kilometers. (ii) The first spaceborne active OL ensures a deeper penetration depth and an all-time detection which leads to a layered characterization of the optical properties of the subsurface ocean, while also serving as a near-nadir altimeter measuring vertical velocities associated with the divergence, and convergence of geostrophic eddy motions in the mixed layer. (iii) The simultaneous functioning of the IA/OL system allows for an enhanced correction of the contamination effects of the atmosphere and the air-sea interface, which in turn considerably reduces the error budgets of the two sensors. As a result, the integrated IA/OL payload is expected to resolve the ocean variability at submeso and sub-week scales with a centimeter-level accuracy, while also partially revealing marine life systems and ecosystems with a 10-m vertical interval in the euphotic layer, moving a significant step forward toward a “transparent ocean” down to the vicinity of the thermocline, both dynamically and bio-optically.

The observation and identification of wake vortex are considered important factors to reduce aviation accidents and increase airport capacity. In addition to aircraft parameters, the evolution process of the wake vortex is strongly related to atmospheric conditions, including crosswind, headwind, atmospheric turbulence, and temperature stratification. Crosswind generally affects the wake vortex trajectories by transporting them to the downwind direction. Additionally, the circulation attenuation of wake vortex is also influenced by crosswind shear or turbulence related to crosswind. This paper implemented the range height indicator (RHI) scanning mode of pulsed coherent Doppler lidar (PCDL) to study the influence of crosswind on wake vortex evolution. The crosswind was obtained from the non-wake vortex regions of the RHI sectors. The method, based on the measurements of radial velocity and spectrum with the broadening feature, was performed to locate wake vortex cores. The wake vortex trajectories with various crosswind strengths were comprehensively analyzed.

Low-level wind shear is usually to be a rapidly changing meteorological phenomenon that cannot be ignored in aviation security service by affecting the air speed of landing and take-off aircrafts. The lidar team in Ocean University of China (OUC) carried out the long term particular researches on the low-level wind shear identification and regional wind shear inducement search at Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) from 2015 to 2020 by operating several pulsed coherent Doppler lidar (PCDL) systems. On account of the improved glide path scanning strategy and virtual multiple wind anemometers based on the rang height indicator (RHI) modes, the small-scale meteorological phenomenon along the glide path and/or runway center line direction can be captured. In this paper, the device configuration, scanning strategies, and results of the observation data are proposed. The algorithms to identify the low-level wind shear based on the reconstructed headwind profiles data have been tested and proved based on the lidar data obtained from December 2018 to January 2019. High spatial resolution observation data at vertical direction are utilized to study the regional wind shear inducement at the 36L end of BCIA under strong northwest wind conditions.

Ocean water column information profiles are essential for ocean research. Currently, water column profiles are typically obtained by ocean lidar instruments, including spaceborne, airborne and shipborne lidar, most of which are equipped with a 532 nm laser; however, blue wavelength penetrates more for open ocean detection. In this paper, we present a novel airborne dual-wavelength ocean lidar (DWOL), equipped with a 532 and 486 nm laser that can operate simultaneously. This instrument was designed to compare the performance of 486 and 532 nm lasers in a single detection area and to provide a reference for future spaceborne oceanic lidar (SBOL) design. Airborne and shipborne experiments were conducted in the South China Sea. Results show that—for a 500-frame accumulation—the 486 nm channel obtained volume profiles from a depth of approximately 100 m. In contrast, the vertical profiles obtained by the 532 nm channel only reached in a depth of 75 m, which was approximately 25% less than that of 486 m channel in the same detection area. Results from the inverse lidar attenuation coefficient α(z) for the DWOL show that the maximum value of α(z) ranged from 40 to 80 m, which was consistent with the chlorophyll-scattering layer (CSL) distribution measured by the shipborne instrument. Additionally, α486(z) decreased for depth beyond 80 m, indicating that the 486 nm laser can potentially penetrate the entire CSL.

Based on the investigation of the application of machine-made sand in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, this paper analyses the supply and demand of local machine-made sand, combined with the application of machine-made sand in highway engineering projects such as Hangzhou Shaoxing Taizhou expressway. It discusses the problems existing in the current machine-made sand industry, such as slow overall application, uneven quality and low application of high-grade concrete, and puts forward many measures to promote high-quality machine-made sand. In the application of high-grade concrete, it is suggested that the government should develop the machine-made sand market jointly with many departments, increase efforts to crack down on the inferior sand, cultivate the high-quality machine-made sand market, and improve the engineering quality of the machine-made sand concrete.

Optical and geometrical characteristics of the cirrus clouds over Naqu (4508 m a.s.l., 31.48° N, 92.06° E), in the Tibetan Plateau were determined from LiDAR and radiosonde measurements performed during the third TIbetan Plateau EXperiment of atmospheric sciences (TIPEX III) campaign from July to August 2014. For the analysis of the temperature dependence, the simultaneous observations with LiDAR and radiosonde were conducted. Cirrus clouds were generally observed ranging from 5.2 km to 12 km above ground level (AGL) (i.e., 9.7 km to 16.5 km a.s.l.), with the midcloud temperatures ranging from −79.7 to −26.0 °C. The cloud thickness generally differed from 0.12 to 2.55 km with a mean thickness of 1.22 ± 0.70 km, and 85.7% of the measurement cases had thickness smaller than 1.5 km. The retrievals of linear particle depolarization ratio, extinction coefficient, and optical depth of cirrus clouds were provided. Moreover, the multiple scattering effect inside of cirrus clouds was corrected. The linear particle depolarization ratio of the cirrus clouds varied from 0.36 to 0.52, with a mean value of 0.44 ± 0.04. The optical depth of the cirrus clouds was between 0.01 and 3 following the scheme of Fernald-Klett method. Sub-visual, thin, and opaque cirrus clouds were observed at 4.76%, 61.90% and 33.34% of the measured cases, respectively. The temperature and thickness dependencies of the optical properties were studied in detail. A maximum cirrus thickness of around 2 km was found at temperatures between −60 and −50 °C. This study shows that the mean extinction coefficient of the cirrus clouds increases with the increase of temperature. Conversely, the measurements indicate that the linear particle depolarization ratio decreases with the increasing temperature. The relationships between the existence of cirrus clouds and the temperature anomaly (temperature difference from the mean value of the temperature during July and August 2014 over Naqu) and deep convective activity are also discussed. The formation of cirrus clouds is investigated and also its apparent relationship with the South Asia High Pressure, the dynamic processes of Rossby wave, and deep convective activity over the Tibetan Plateau. The outgoing longwave radiation of cirrus clouds is calculated with the Fu-Liou model and is shown to increases monotonously with the increase of optical depth.

A lidar detects atmospheric parameters by transmitting laser pulse to the atmosphere and receiving the backscattering signals from molecules and aerosol particles. Because of the small backscattering cross section, a lidar usually uses the high sensitive photomultiplier and avalanche photodiode as detector and uses photon counting technology for collection of weak backscatter signals. Photon Counting enables the capturing of extremely weak lidar return from long distance, throughout dark background, by a long time accumulation. Because of the strong solar background, the signal-to-noise ratio of lidar during daytime could be greatly restricted, especially for the lidar operating at visible wavelengths where solar background is prominent. Narrow band-pass filters must therefore be installed in order to isolate solar background noise at wavelengths close to that of the lidar receiving channel, whereas the background light in superposition with signal spectrum, limits an effective margin for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement. This work describes a lidar prototype operating at the Fraunhofer lines, the invisible band of solar spectrum, to achieve photon counting under intense solar background. The photon counting lidar prototype in Fraunhofer lines devised was used to observe the atmospheric boundary layer. The SNR was improved 2-3 times by operating the lidar at the wavelength in solar dark lines. The aerosol extinctions illustrate the vertical structures of aerosol in the atmospheric boundary over Qingdao suburban during summer 2011.

A brief description of the Water vapor, Cloud and Aerosol Lidar (WACAL) system is provided. To calibrate the volume linear depolarization ratio, the concept of “ Δ 90 ° -calibration” is applied in this study. This effective and accurate calibration method is adjusted according to the design of WACAL. Error calculations and analysis of the gain ratio, calibrated volume linear depolarization ratio and particle linear depolarization ratio are provided as well. In this method, the influences of the gain ratio, the rotation angle of the plane of polarization and the polarizing beam splitter are discussed in depth. Two groups of measurements with half wave plate (HWP) at angles of (0 ° , 45 ° ) and (22.5 ° , −22.5 ° ) are operated to calibrate the volume linear depolarization ratio. Then, the particle linear depolarization ratios measured by WACAL and CALIOP (the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) during the simultaneous observations were compared. Good agreements are found. The calibration method was applied in the third Tibetan Plateau Experiment of Atmospheric Sciences (TIPEX III) in 2013 and 2014 in China. Vertical profiles of the particle depolarization ratio of clouds and aerosol in the Tibetan Plateau were measured with WACAL in Litang (30.03° N, 100.28° E, 3949 m above sea level (a.s.l.)) in 2013 and Naqu (31.48° N, 92.06° E, 4508 m a.s.l.) in 2014. Then an analysis on the polarizing properties of the aerosol, clouds and cirrus over the Tibetan Plateau is provided. The particle depolarization ratio of cirrus clouds varies from 0.36 to 0.52, with a mean value of 0.44 ± 0.04. Cirrus clouds occurred between 5.2 and 12 km above ground level (a.g.l.). The cloud thickness ranges from 0.12 to 2.55 km with a mean thickness of 1.22 ± 0.70 km. It is found that the particle depolarization ratio of cirrus clouds become larger as the height increases. However, the increase rate of the particle depolarization ratio becomes smaller as the height increases.

In the project of the Third Tibetan Plateau Experiment of Atmospheric Science (TIPEX III), the intensive observation of cloud and precipitation in Nagqu was conducted from 1 July to 31 August 2014. The CL31 ceilometer and a WAter vapor, Cloud and Aerosol Lidar (WACAL) were deployed and focused on studying the cloud macroscopic characteristics and vertical distribution. The statistical result of CL31 ceilometer in continuous operation mode shows that the cloud occurrence is about 81% with a majority of simple one-layer cloud. The cloud base and top height are retrieved by improved differential zero-crossing method using lidar data. The results of cloud base height (CBH) are compared with CL31 ceilometer, showing a good consistency with each other, however, in some cases, the CL31 ceilometer overestimates the CBH and is also validated by synchronous radiosonde data. The time snippet comparisons of cloud property between CL31 ceilometer and lidar imply that the cloud properties have obvious diurnal variations with “U” shape distribution. The cloud development including the time-spatial distribution features also has distinct diurnal variations based on the lidar measurement. The detection range of lidar goes beyond the maximum height of CL31 ceilometer, offering substantial observations to the analysis of cirrus cloud radiation characteristics and formation mechanism.

The curing rate over one kind of MnO2 was relative slow for traditional polysulfide sealing, and it was difficult to flexibly adjust induction time and curing rate with low cost. The physical mixture of two kinds of MnO2 showed much rapid curing rate than that of corresponding single MnO2 alone, particularly, the physical mixture of δ-MnO2 and α-MnO2 showed superior curing performance to δ-MnO2 and α-MnO2 and lower curing rate than that of δ-MnO2 by photo assistance. The efficient and controllable polysulfide sealing can be achieved by facile physical mixture of different crystalline forms of MnO2 and/or turning on/off light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On April 16, 2022, China has successfully launched the world's first space-borne high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL), which is called the Aerosol Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL) onboard the DQ-1 satellite. The ACDL is expected to precisely detect the three-dimensional distribution of aerosol and cloud globally with high spatial-temporal resolutions. To assess the performance of the newly launched satellite lidar, the ACDL retrieved observations were compared with groundbased lidar measurements of atmospheric aerosol and cloud over northwest China from May to July 2022 by the exploitation of the Belt and Road lidar network (BR-lidarnet) initiated by Lanzhou University of China, as well as CALIPSO lidar observations. A total of six cases at daytime and nighttime, including clear days, dust events, and cloudy conditions, were selected for further analysis. Moreover, profiles of total attenuated backscatter coefficient (TABC) and volume depolarization ratio (VDR) at 532 nm measured by the ACDL, CALIPSO lidar and ground-based lidar are compared in detail. Comparison between the 532 nm extinction coefficient and lidar ratio obtained from ACDL HSRL retrieval and the Raman retrieval results obtained from BR-lidarnet. The achieved results revealed that the ACDL observations were in good agreement with the ground-based lidar measurements during dust events with a relative deviation of about -10.5 ± 25.4 % for the TABC and -6.0 ± 38.5 % for the VDR. Additionally, the heights of cloud top and bottom from these two measurements were well matched and comparable. Compared with the observation of CALIPSO, it also shows high consistency. This study proves that the ACDL provides reliable observations of aerosol and cloud in the presence of various climatic conditions, which helps to further evaluate the impacts of aerosol on climate and environment as well as the ecosystem in the future. The new-generation atmospheric environment monitoring satellite DQ-1, launched successfully in April 2022 carries the Aerosol and Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL) which is capable of globally profiling the aerosols and clouds optical properties with high accuracy. The ACDL/DQ-1 is a high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) with two-wavelength polarization detection, that can be utilized to derive the aerosol optical properties. The methods are specifically developed for the data processing and optical properties retrieval according to the specific characteristics of the ACDL system are introduced in detail in this paper. Considering the different signal characteristics and different background noise behaviours of each channel during daytime and nighttime, the procedures of data pre-processing, denoising process and quality control are applied to the original measurement signals. The aerosol and cloud optical properties products of the ACDL/DQ-1 including total depolarization ratio, backscatter coefficient, extinction coefficient, lidar ratio and colour ratio can be calculated by the retrieval algorithms presented in this paper. Two measurement cases with use of the ACDL/DQ-1 on 27th June 2022 and the global averaged aerosol optical depth (AOD) from 1st June to 4th August 2022 are provided and analysed, which demonstrated the measurement capability of the ACDL/DQ-1.
