8. Extrinsic Factors Affecting the Accuracy of Biomedical NER

Abstract

Biomedical named entity recognition (NER) is a critial task that aims to identify structured information in clinical text, which is often replete with complex, technical terms and a high degree of variability. Accurate and reliable NER can facilitate the extraction and analysis of important biomedical information, which can be used to improve downstream applications including the healthcare system. However, NER in the biomedical domain is challenging due to limited data availability, as the high expertise, time, and expenses are required to annotate its data. In this paper, by using the limited data, we explore various extrinsic factors including the corpus annotation scheme, data augmentation techniques, semi-supervised learning and Brill transformation, to improve the performance of a NER model on a clinical text dataset (i2b2 2012, \citet{sun-rumshisky-uzuner:2013}). Our experiments demonstrate that these approaches can significantly improve the model's F1 score from original 73.74 to 77.55. Our findings suggest that considering different extrinsic factors and combining these techniques is a promising approach for improving NER performance in the biomedical domain where the size of data is limited.

9. Channel model-based multiple layers satellite-ground integrated data allocation strategy

Abstract

To address the problem of inefficient satellite-ground link handover, unbalanced data allocation, and high probability of data transmission interruptions in space-air-ground integrated networks, a channel model-based multiple layers satellite-ground integrated data allocation strategy (CMDAS) was proposed for the satellite-ground integrated data transmission scenario with a multi-layer architecture. Considered various factors, e.g., the satellite-ground distance, free space path loss, channel gain, and remaining service time, a service capacity quantification model of low earth orbit satellites based on the Shannon’s capacity theory was constructed, thus generating data allocation strategies. Considered the risk of data transmission interruptions with historical interaction information and dynamically adjusted data allocation strategies based on a reliability acknowledgement mechanism, the efficiency of data transmission was improved and satellite-ground link seamless handover with interruption avoidance was realized. The simulation results show that the performances of the proposed strategy outperform other baseline algorithms in terms of delivery ratio, average delivery latency, and interruption ratio.

Abstract

Thermal expansion of MAX phases along different directions tended to be different because of the anisotropy of hexagonal crystals. Herein, a new Hf2SeC phase was synthesized and confirmed to be relatively isotropic, whose coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) were determined to be 9.73 {\mu}K-1 and 10.18 {\mu}K-1 along a and c directions. The strong M-S bond endowed Hf2SC and Zr2SC lower CTEs than Hf2SeC and Zr2SeC. A good relationship between the thermal expansion anisotropy and the ratio of elastic stiffness constant c11 and c33 was established. This straightforward approximation could be used to roughly predict the thermal expansion anisotropy of MAX phases.

Abstract

The elemental diversity is crucial to screen out ternary MAX phases with outstanding properties via tuning of bonding types and strength between constitutive atoms. As a matter of fact, the interactions between M and A atoms largely determine the physical and chemical properties of MAX phases. Herein, Se element was experimentally realized to occupy the A site of a MAX phase, Zr2SeC, becoming a new member within this nanolaminated ternary carbide family. Comprehensive characterizations including Rietveld refinement of X-ray Diffraction and atom-resolved transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to validate this novel MAX phase. The distinct thermal conduction behaviors emerged are attributed to the characteristic interactions between Zr and Se atoms.
