BACKGROUND: Maternal lipidomic profiling offers promise for characterizing lipid metabolites during pregnancy, but longitudinal data are limited. This study aimed to examine associations of longitudinal lipidomic profiles during pregnancy with multiple neonatal anthropometry using data from a multiracial cohort. METHODS: We measured untargeted plasma lipidome profiles among 321 pregnant women from the NICHD Fetal Growth Study-Singletons using plasma samples collected longitudinally during four study visits at gestational weeks (GW) 10-14, 15-26, 23-31, and 33-39, respectively. We evaluated individual lipidomic metabolites at each study visit in association with neonatal anthropometry. We also evaluated the associations longitudinally by constructing lipid networks using weighted correlation network analysis and common networks using consensus network analysis across four visits using linear mixed-effects models with the adjustment of false discover rate. FINDINGS: Multiple triglycerides (TG) were positively associated with birth weight (BW), BW Z-score, length and head circumference, while some cholesteryl ester (CE), phosphatidylcholine (PC), sphingomyelines (SM), phosphatidylethanolamines (PE), and lysophosphatidylcholines (LPC 20:3) families were inversely associated with BW, length, abdominal and head circumference at different GWs. Longitudinal trajectories of TG, PC, and glucosylcermides (GlcCer) were associated with BW, and CE (18:2) with BW z-score, length, and sum of skinfolds (SS), while some PC and PE were significantly associated with abdominal and head circumference. Modules of TG at GW 10-14 and 15-26 mainly were associated with BW. At GW 33-39, two networks of LPC (20:3) and of PC, TG, and CE, showed inverse associations with abdominal circumference. Distinct trajectories within two consensus modules with changes in TG, CE, PC, and LPC showed significant differences in BW and length. INTERPRETATION: The results demonstrated that longitudinal changes of TGs during early- and mid-pregnancy and changes of PC, LPC, and CE during late-pregnancy were significantly associated with neonatal anthropometry. Graduate students often serve as a liaison between a university and its surrounding community through their participation in educational outreach programs. Astronomy graduate students' responses to openended survey questions about their experience volunteering with an educational outreach program were qualitatively coded to investigate how participating in educational outreach influenced their identity and self-efficacy as scientists and educators. We found that "connecting with students" and "difficulty managing behavior" enhanced and diminished, respectively, participants' confidence and identity as scientists and educators. We suggest ways in which universities and departments can aid graduate students' experience in educational outreach and the myriad of benefits that the individual, university, and community may reap when a higher value is placed on participation in educational outreach in graduate programs.

Background and aimsMetabolomic profiling is a systematic approach to identifying biomarkers for dietary patterns. Yet, metabolomic markers for dietary patterns in pregnant individuals have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to identify plasma metabolomic markers and metabolite panels that are associated with the Mediterranean diet in pregnant individuals.MethodsThis is a prospective study of 186 pregnant individuals who had both dietary intake and metabolomic profiles measured from the Fetal Growth Studies-Singletons cohort. Dietary intakes during the peri-conception/1st trimester and the second trimester were accessed at 8-13 and 16-22 weeks of gestation, respectively. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was measured by the alternate Mediterranean Diet (aMED) score. Fasting plasma samples were collected at 16-22 weeks and untargeted metabolomics profiling was performed using the mass spectrometry-based platforms. Metabolites individually or jointly associated with aMED scores were identified using linear regression and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression models with adjustment for potential confounders, respectively.ResultsAmong 459 annotated metabolites, 64 and 41 were individually associated with the aMED scores of the diet during the peri-conception/1st trimester and during the second trimester, respectively. Fourteen metabolites were associated with the Mediterranean diet in both time windows. Most Mediterranean diet-related metabolites were lipids (e.g., acylcarnitine, cholesteryl esters (CEs), linoleic acid, long-chain triglycerides (TGs), and phosphatidylcholines (PCs), amino acids, and sugar alcohols. LASSO regressions also identified a 10 metabolite-panel that were jointly associated with aMED score of the diet during the peri-conception/1st trimester (AUC: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.57, 0.91) and a 3 metabolites-panel in the 2nd trimester (AUC: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.50, 0.86).ConclusionWe identified plasma metabolomic markers for the Mediterranean diet among pregnant individuals. Some of them have also been reported in previous studies among non-pregnant populations, whereas others are novel. The results from our study warrant replication in pregnant individuals by future studies.Clinical trial registration numberThis study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov.

The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst-AGN (active galactic nucleus) connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of ∼100 pc over the 4.9-7.6 μm region are examined to study the gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe ii] λ5.34 μm and [Ar ii] λ6.99 μm lines are bright on the nucleus and in the starburst ring, as opposed to H2 S(5) λ6.91 μm, which is strongly peaked at the center and surrounding ISM. The high-ionization [Mg v] line is resolved and shows a broad, blueshifted component associated with the outflow. It has a nearly face-on geometry that is strongly peaked on the nucleus, where it reaches a maximum velocity of −650 km s−1, and extends about 400 pc to the east. Regions of enhanced velocity dispersion in H2 and [Fe ii] ∼ 180 pc from the AGN that also show high L(H2)/L(PAH) and L([Fe ii])/L(Pfα) ratios to the W and N of the nucleus pinpoint regions where the ionized outflow is depositing energy, via shocks, into the dense interstellar medium between the nucleus and the starburst ring. These resolved mid-infrared observations of the nuclear gas dynamics demonstrate the power of JWST and its high-sensitivity integral-field spectroscopic capability to resolve feedback processes around supermassive black holes in the dusty cores of nearby luminous infrared galaxies.

Background/objectivesThere is evidence of black-white differences in vitamin D status and cardiometabolic health. This study aimed to further evaluate the joint associations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and parathyroid hormone (PTH) with risks of diabetes and related cardiometabolic comorbidities among white and black women.Subjects/methodsWe cross-sectionally and prospectively analyzed data from 1850 black and 3000 white postmenopausal women without cardiovascular disease or dialysis at baseline from the Women's Health Initiative-Observational Study. Weighted Cox proportional hazards analyses and weighted logistic regression models were used to examine the joint associations of 25(OH)D and PTH with incident diabetes and prevalence of other diabetes-related cardiometabolic comorbidities (including CKD, hypertension, or obesity).ResultsWe identified 3322 cases of obesity (n = 1629), hypertension (n = 2759), or CKD (n = 318) at baseline and 453 incident cases of diabetes during 11 years of follow-up. Cross-sectionally, lower 25(OH)D and higher PTH were independently associated with higher prevalence of hypertension [odds ratio (OR) = 0.79; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.72-0.87 and OR = 1.55; 95% CI: 1.39-1.73] among white women only. When stratified by diabetes status, compared to women with 25(OH)D ≥50 nmol/L and PTH ≤6.89 pmol/L (65 pg/mL), women who did not have diabetes with vitamin D deficiency (6.89 pmol/L) had higher prevalence of CKD, hypertension, or obesity (OR = 4.23; 95% CI: 2.90-6.18) than women who had diabetes (OR = 1.89; 95% CI: 0.96-3.71). Background: Postmenopausal women represent the highest population-based burden of cardiovascular disease, including sudden cardiac death (SCD). Our understanding of the etiology and risk factors contributing to fatal coronary heart disease (CHD) and SCD, particularly among women, is limited. This study examines the association between dietary magnesium intake and fatal CHD and SCD. Materials and Methods: We examined 153,569 postmenopausal women who participated in the Women's Health Initiative recruited between 1993 and 1998. Magnesium intake at baseline was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, adjusting for energy via the residual method. Fatal CHD and SCD were identified over an average follow-up of 10.5 years. Results: For every standard deviation increase in magnesium intake, there was statistically significant risk reduction, after adjustment for confounders, of 7% for fatal CHD (hazard ratio [HR] 0.93, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.89-0.97), and 18% risk reduction for SCD (HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.58-1.15) the latter of which did not reach statistical significance. In age-adjusted quartile analysis, women with the lowest magnesium intake (189 mg/day) had the greatest risk for fatal CHD (HR 1.54, 95% CI 1.40-1.69) and SCD (HR 1.70, 95% CI 0.94-3.07). This association was attenuated in the fully adjusted model, with HRs of 1.19 (95% CI 1.06-1.34) for CHD and 1.24 (95% CI 0.58-2.65) for SCD for the lowest quartile of magnesium intake. Conclusions: This study provides evidence of a potential inverse association between dietary magnesium and fatal CHD and a trend of magnesium with SCD in postmenopausal women. Future studies should confirm this association and consider clinical trials to test whether magnesium supplementation could reduce fatal CHD in high-risk individuals.

Background Recent evidence suggests that racial/ethnic differences in circulating levels of free or bioavailable 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25[ OH ]D) rather than total 25( OH )D may explain apparent racial disparities in cardiovascular disease ( CVD ). We prospectively examined black-white differences in the associations of total, free, and bioavailable 25( OH )D, vitamin D-binding protein, and parathyroid hormone levels at baseline with incident CVD (including nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and CVD death) in postmenopausal women. Methods and Results We conducted a case-cohort study among 79 705 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 79 years, who were free of CVD at baseline in the WHI-OS (Women's Health Initiative Observational Study). A subcohort of 1300 black and 1500 white participants were randomly chosen as controls; a total of 550 black and 1500 white women who developed incident CVD during a mean follow-up of 11 years were chosen as cases. We directly measured total 25( OH )D, vitamin D-binding protein, albumin, parathyroid hormone, and calculated free and bioavailable 25( OH )D. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine their associations with CVD risk. Although vitamin D-binding protein and total, free, and bioavailable 25( OH )D were not significantly associated with CVD risk in black or white women, a significant positive association between parathyroid hormone and CVD risk persisted in white women (hazard ratio comparing the highest quartile with the lowest, 1.37; 95% CI , 1.06-1.77) but not in black women (hazard ratio comparing the highest quartile with the lowest, 1.12; 95% CI, 0.79-1.58), independent of total, free, and bioavailable 25( OH )D or vitamin D-binding protein. Conclusions Circulating levels of vitamin D biomarkers are not related to CVD risk in either white or black women. Higher parathyroid hormone levels may be an independent risk factor for CVD in white women.

Findings on maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and neonatal anthropometry are inconsistent, and may at least be partly due to variations in gestational week (GW) of 25(OH)D measurement and the lack of longitudinal 25(OH)D measurements across gestation. The aim of the current study was to examine the associations of longitudinal measures of maternal 25(OH)D and neonatal anthropometry at birth. This study included 321 mother⁻offspring pairs enrolled in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Fetal Growth Studies⁻Singletons. This study was a prospective cohort design without supplementation and without data on dietary supplementation. Nevertheless, measurement of plasma 25(OH)D reflects vitamin D from different sources, including supplementation. Maternal concentrations of total 25(OH)D were measured at 10⁻14, 15⁻26, 23⁻31, and 33⁻39 GW and categorized as 75 nmol/L. Generalized linear models were used to examine associations of 25(OH)D at each time-point with neonate birthweight z-score, length, and sum of skinfolds at birth. This paper presents the first results from draw-a-scientist tests (DASTs) over five years that were used to measure the effect of 8-10 week long astronomy clubs and week long summer camps on 3rd-5th grade elementary school students' perceptions of scientists. We facilitated these DASTs prior to these clubs or camps, which provide a baseline for a student's initial conception of scientists, and once at the end, to determine whether their conception changed, possibly as a result of their involvement. In total we analyze 89 pairs of DASTs using a numerical grading scheme designed to quantify the presence of various features in the drawn scientist and their activities. We find that there is a gender imbalance in both the pre- and postclub drawings, with only 32% and 35%, respectively, of students drawing female scientists. We also find that a third to a half of the scientists have a stereotypical appearance and/or are performing stereotypical activities. Although we find insignificant changes (<5%) in most categories, we do find an 8% increase in the number of scientists that have a stereotypical appearance, which is worth following up, but a significant 12% decrease in the number of scientists who are performing stereotypical activities. In addition, we present some possible improvements to implementing DASTs and discuss other possible assessments that could provide a more direct method of gauging the effect of these astronomy clubs or camps.

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes exhibit great potential for the degradation of organic pollutants. In this study, P-doped biochar (PBC500) was successfully synthesized by the pyrolysis of H3PO4-impregnated cow manure waste and was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the elimination of 17β-estradiol (E2). The characterization results showed that the surface area, defective structure, and functional groups (C=O and phosphorus-containing groups) of biochar increased after H3PO4 modification. PBC500 exhibited high PMS activation activity and excellent E2 degradation capacity; 97.91% of 3 mg/L E2 can be removed within 90 min using 0.2 g/L PBC500 and 1 mM PMS. Based on the quenching experiments and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, defective structures, C=O, and P-C groups on biochar act as active sites to promote the catalytic oxidation of E2 by generating O2− and 1O2. In addition, PBC500 displayed excellent reusability, achieving 65.15% E2 degradation after three reuse cycles. Overall, this study presented a new technique that supports a high efficiency, environmentally friendly, and low cost treatment method for E2 wastewater and simultaneously provided a new option for the resource utilization of livestock waste. The enormous increase in mid-IR sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution provided by the JWST spectrographs enables, for the first time, detailed extragalactic studies of molecular vibrational bands. This opens an entirely new window for the study of the molecular interstellar medium in luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We present a detailed analysis of rovibrational bands of gas-phase CO, H2O, C2H2, and HCN toward the heavily obscured eastern nucleus of the LIRG VV 114, as observed by NIRSpec and the medium resolution spectrograph on the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI MRS). Spectra extracted from apertures of 130 pc in radius show a clear dichotomy between the obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) and two intense starburst regions. We detect the 2.3 μ m CO bandheads, characteristic of cool stellar atmospheres, in the star-forming regions, but not toward the AGN. Surprisingly, at 4.7 μ m, we find highly excited CO (T ex ≈ 700–800 K out to at least rotational level J = 27) toward the star-forming regions, but only cooler gas (T ex ≈ 200 K) toward the AGN. We conclude that only mid-infrared pumping through the rovibrational lines can account for the equilibrium conditions found for CO and H2O in the deeply embedded starbursts. Here, the CO bands probe regions with an intense local radiation field inside dusty young massive star clusters or near the most massive young stars. The lack of high-excitation molecular gas toward the AGN is attributed to geometric dilution of the intense radiation from the bright point source. Drifting larval fish assemblages were investigated at three sections in the middle reach of the Yangtze River downstream of the Three Gorges Dam to reveal recovery gradients and to identify the major environmental factors influencing their temporal and spatial patterns. Larval fish in the river section closest to the dam showed lower abundance, later occurrence, narrower temporal niche breadth, and more pairs of dominant species with high niche overlap than those further from the dam. Water temperature, transparency, and discharge significantly influenced the larval fish assemblages. They showed longitudinal gradients of increased water temperature, decreased transparency, and increased discharge in a downstream direction. Our results suggested that hypolimnetic and clean water discharge from the dam heavily impacted larval fish assemblage in the river section near the dam. With an increased distance to the dam and the input of some major tributaries, this impact was gradually buffered, thus forming the longitudinal recovery gradients. We suggest that priority for conservation should shift from river sections closer to the dam to those further from the dam. Les larves de poisson dans le tronqon du fleuve situe le plus pres du barrage montrent une plus faible abondance, une apparition plus tardive, une niche temporelle plus etroite et plus de paires d'especes dominantes caracterisees par un grand chevauchement de leurs niches que les larves dans les tronqons plus eloignes du barrage. La temperature et la transparence de l'eau, ainsi que le debit ont une influence significative sur les assemblages de larves de poisson. Des gradients longitudinaux d'augmentation de la temperature de l'eau, de diminution de la transparence et d'augmentation du debit vers l'aval sont observes. Nos resultats donnent a penser que le rejet d'eau hypolimnique et d'eau propre du barrage a eu un important impact sur l'assemblage de larves de poisson dans le tronqon du fleuve a proximite du barrage. La distance croissante par rapport au barrage et l'apport de quelques grands affluents attenuent progressivement cet impact, produisant ainsi des gradients de retablissement longitudinaux. Aims/hypothesisThe aim of this work was to investigate the prospective relationship between low birthweight (LBW) and type 2 diabetes risk later in life and the mediation effects of type 2 diabetes biomarkers linking LBW to type 2 diabetes risk.MethodsWe measured baseline plasma concentrations of various type 2 diabetes biomarkers in 1,259 incident type 2 diabetes cases and 1,790 controls in the Women's Health Initiative-Observational Study. Self-report birthweights of the participants were recorded. BackgroundVitamin D supplementation may be an inexpensive intervention to reduce heart failure (HF) incidence. However, there are insufficient data to support this hypothesis. This study evaluates whether vitamin D plus calcium (CaD) supplementation is associated with lower rates of HF in postmenopausal women and whether the effects differ between those at high versus low risk for HF.Methods and resultsAnalyses were restricted to 35 983 (of original 36 282) women aged 50 to 79 years old in the Women's Health Initiative randomized trial of CaD supplementation who were randomized 1:1 in a double-blinded fashion to receive 1000 mg/d of calcium plus 400 IU/d of vitamin D3 or placebo. Overall, 744 adjudicated incident HF cases (intervention, 363; control, 381) occurred during a median follow-up of 7.1 (interquartile range, 1.6) years. CaD supplementation, compared with placebo, was not associated with reduced HF risk in the overall population, hazard ratio, 0.95; P=0.46. However, CaD supplementation had differential effects (P interaction=0.005) in subgroups stratified by baseline risk status of HF defined by the presence (high risk=17 449) or absence (low risk=18 534) of pre-existing HF precursors including coronary heart diseases, diabetes mellitus, or hypertension: 37% (hazard ratio, 0.63 [95% confidence interval, 0.46-0.87]) lower risk of HF in the low-risk versus hazard ratio, 1.06; P=0.51, in the high-risk subgroups.ConclusionsCaD supplementation did not significantly reduce HF incidence in the overall cohort, however, it was beneficial among postmenopausal women without major HF precursors while of little value in high-risk subgroups. ObjectiveTo evaluate the association between self-reported daily sitting time and the incidence of type 2 diabetes in a cohort of postmenopausal women.MethodsWomen (N=88,829) without diagnosed diabetes reported the number of hours spent sitting over a typical day. Incident cases of diabetes were identified annually by self-reported initiation of using oral medications or insulin for diabetes > 14.4 years follow-up.ResultsEach hour of sitting time was positively associated with increased risk of diabetes [risk ratio (RR): 1.05; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-1.08]. However, sitting time was only positively associated with incident diabetes in obese women. Obese women reporting sitting 8-11 (RR: 1.08; 95% CI 1.0-1.1), 12-15 (OR: 1.13; 95% CI 1.0-1.2), and ≥16 hours (OR: 1.25; 95% CI 1.0-1.5) hours per day had an increased risk of diabetes compared to women sitting ≤7 hours per day. These associations were adjusted for demographics, health conditions, behaviors (smoking, diet, and alcohol intake), and family history of diabetes. Time performing moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity did not modify these associations.ConclusionsTime spent sitting was independently associated with increased risk of diabetes diagnosis among obese women-a population already at high risk of the disease.
