Abstract

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an important tool for studying the structures of molecules and materials. Mainly due to their high costs, the NMR spectrometers are often not available for teaching experiments. Teaching NMR experiments cannot be performed routinely and effectively also because that the students are not able to understand the principles underlying the operational steps without proper and adequate training. In this work, a virtual NMR spectrometer (VMRS1.0) for teaching experiments, which is based on numerical computational simulation technology and can be operated like a real spectrometer, is presented. With the VMRS1.0, the students can perform basic NMR experiments, including tuning, shimming, field lock, power adjustment for radio frequency, selecting samples, acquiring data, fast Fourier transform and spectrum processing (i.e., phase correction, integration, chemical shift correction, auto peak finding and J-coupling constant measurement). In addition to the routine one-dimensional NMR experiments, more complicated experiments such as decoupling, DEPT and HMQC can also be performed on the VMRS1.0. With the virtual NMR spectrometer developed, the students can practice their experimental skills and gain deeper understandings of the underlying principles in a more easy and cost-efficient way.

Abstract

A time-of-flight imaging technique is introduced to visualize fluid flow and dispersion through porous media using NMR. As the fluid flows through a sample, the nuclear spin magnetization is modulated by RF pulses and magnetic field gradients to encode the spatial coordinates of the fluid. When the fluid leaves the sample, its magnetization is recorded by a second RF coil. This scheme not only facilitates a time-dependent imaging of fluid flow, it also allows a separate optimization of encoding and detection subsystems to enhance overall sensitivity. The technique is demonstrated by imaging gas flow through a porous rock.

Abstract

Improved oil recovery from asphaltenic oil reservoirs may provide the world with a significant source of lower-cost energy over many decades. However, the mechanisms through which the surface-active components in crude oil, such as asphaltenes and organic acids, affect incremental oil production are still unclear. In this study, we investigate crude oil/water interfacial films using shear and dilational rheology for mechanical properties and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to better understand its molecular species present at the interface that contribute to the development of viscoelastic behaviors. Dilational rheology has proven to be more sensitive to early time development of elasticity. In contrast, shear rheology provided more insights regarding the formation of elastic films at the macroscopic scale and late time interfacial changes. The presence of salts such as sodium chloride in the aqueous phase played a critical role in altering the dynamics of both the rheological properties development and the interfacial tension.

Abstract

An efficient algorithm is proposed, for solving a class of two- and 2.5-dimensional Fredholm integrals of the first kind with a tensor structure and a non-negativity constraint on estimated parameters of interest. This is an ill-conditioned problem wherein the singular values of the kernels decay rapidly to zero. Problems such as this are encountered in computing a density function from its moments, or in applications involving inverse Laplace transforms.
