19. Effects of application of exogenous NO on the physiological characteristics of perennial ryegrass grown in Cd-contaminated soil

Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a nitric oxide [NO] donor) on cadmium (Cd) toxicity in ryegrass plants. In the present study, ryegrass plants subjected to Cd toxicity were treated with different concentrations of SNP (50, 100, 300 and 500 µM), SNP solution was poured into Cd-contaminated soil every seven days. Cd treatment inhibited the plants growth and the absorption of micronutrients, increased accumulation of Cd in both shoots and roots. In Cd-treated plants, the activities of antioxidant enzymes and the contents of proline, soluble protein and ascorbic acid (AsA) decreased dramatically, whereas the accumulation of superoxide anion (O2.-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) increased significantly. Addition of SNP significantly decreased O2.-, H2O2 and MDA accumulation in both shoots and roots of Cd-stressed plants, decreased the transport of Cd from roots to shoots, alleviated the inhibition of Ca, Fe, Mg and Zn absorption induced by Cd and promoted the plant growth. In SNP-treated plants, the chlorophyll content, the contents of proline, soluble protein and ascorbic acid, and the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase increased considerably. Addition of 300 µM SNP had the most significant alleviating effect against Cd toxicity while the addition of 500 µM SNP had no significant effect with Cd treatment. Based on these results, we concluded that the optimal concentrations of exogenous SNP could alleviate Cd induced stress and promote ryegrass plant growth.

Abstract

The growth and characterization of crystalline 1,1-dicyano-2,2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)ethylene (DDME) thin film with electrical switching property is reported. Optical spectroscopy shows that the film chemical structure is consistent with that of the powder material, suggesting that DDME material is very stable during the vacuum thermal deposition process.

42. In vivo expression of IL-12 and IL-13 in atopic dermatitis

Abstract

Previous studies in atopic dermatitis (AD) have shown that acute and chronic skin lesions are associated with a TH "2-type profile of cytokine expression. IL-12 and IL-13 are recently described cytokines, which possess TH "1- and TH "2-like actions, respectively. We have used the technique of in situ hybridization to examine the expression of IL-12 and IL-13 messenger RNA in skin biopsy specimens of acute and chronic skin lesions and uninvolved skin from patients with AD. When compared with normal control skin, the acute and chronic skin lesions and unaffected skin from patients with AD had significantly greater numbers of cells that were positive for IL-13 mRNA (p < 0.05). Acute AD skin lesions expressed a higher number of positive cells than those observed in chronic AD skin lesions (p < 0.05) or psoriasis skin lesions (p < 0.05) There was a significant increase in the numbers of IL-12 mRNA-positive cells in chronic skin lesions compared with acute lesions and uninvolved skin from patients with AD (p < 0.05). These data demonstrate that acute AD skin lesions are associated with an increased expression of IL-13 mRNA. In contrast, the relative increase in IL-12 mRNA in chronic AD skin lesions suggests a possible role for IL-12-producing cells in modulating chronic inflammation. Abstract

We present a direct observation of a structural transition at molecular scale in an organic p-nitrobenzonitrile (PNBN) thin film using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM images clearly show an ordered molecular structure of unrecorded regions in the films, while the PNBN molecular arrangements are disordered in the recorded regions. The current-voltage (I-V) measurements from the STM demonstrate a great increase of the conductance transition in the recorded regions after the voltage pulses. Those results suggest that the recording mechanism may be due to a crystalline structural transition, which is consistent with our previously proposed mechanism in another organic system for ultrahigh density data storage. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

A thin film of 1,1-dicyano-2,2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl) ethylene (DDME) has been grown by a modified vacuum deposition. The films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Highly ordered parallel molecular stacks were repeatedly observed with STM under ambient conditions. The dc current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of device Au/DDME/Au were measured, and the film was found to possess good electrical bistability and electrochromic properties. Nanometer-scale recording was realized on the film by applying pulse voltage between the STM tip and substrate. The possible switching mechanism is discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
