In this paper, the reflection phenomenon of plane harmonic waves in a functionally graded thermoelastic medium is studied based on the generalized theory of thermoelasticity. The boundary is assumed to be stress free and thermally insulated. For the incidence of quasi-longitudinal (QL) wave or quasi-transverse (QT) type wave, there may exist three types of reflected waves. For each reflected wave, the corresponding slowness vector is resolved to define its phase speed and reflected angle. Further, the effect of the functionally graded factor on the phase speeds, reflected angles as well as the reflection coefficients for the incidence of QL or QT wave were investigated and shown graphically. This work investigates the interactions between the soil and a superstructure subjected to various seismic waves using variable-kinematics finite beam elements. Artificial boundary conditions based on springs and dashpots with appropriate elastic and viscous coefficients were adopted to ensure the absorption of the incident waves and simulate the infinite domain condition. The one-dimensional finite element formulation is obtained with a unified formalism that enables arbitrary structural models to be adopted. Lagrange-type expansions have been used in this work to approximate the beam kinematics and facilitate the application of artificial boundary conditions. Both pressure and shear waves with different incidence angles have been considered, and the dynamic responses calculated with the current approach have been compared with analytical solutions when available. The results have demonstrated the accuracy and potentialities of the methodology and provided reasonable confidence for future applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was conducted to describe a prenatal case of congenital hydrocephalus and hemivertebrae with a 6q terminal deletion and to investigate the possible correlation between the genotype and phenotype of the proband. We performed an array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) analysis on a fetus diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus and hemivertebrae. The deletion, spanning 10.06 Mb from 6q25.3 to 6qter, was detected in this fetus. The results of aCGH, karyotype and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses in the healthy parents were normal, which confirmed that the proband’s copy- number variant (CNV) was de novo. This deleted region encompassed 97 genes, including 28 OMIM genes. We discussed four genes (TBP, PSMB1, QKI and Pacrg) that may be responsible for hydrocephalus while the T gene may have a role in hemivertebra. We speculate that five genes in the 6q terminal deletion region were potentially associated with hemivertebrae and hydrocephalus in the proband.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the cytological adequacy rates of different needle passes in ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid nodules and, thus, to help establish the criterion for selecting the number of needle passes according to the characteristics of thyroid nodules. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This single-center and randomized prospective study involved 207 consecutive patients with 240 solid or predominantly solid thyroid nodules. These nodules were randomly divided into a 1-pass group, a 2-pass group, and a 3-pass group. Then the nodules were sent for cytopathological diagnosis, and cytological results were classified according to the Bethesda classification. Bethesda I was defined as inadequate, and Bethesda Ⅱ-Ⅵ were defined as adequate. Then the cytological adequacy rates of different groups were compared. RESULTS: In total, 221 nodule specimens were considered as adequate and 19 nodule specimens inadequate. The overall adequacy rate was 92.1%. However, there were no significant differences among the 1, 2, and 3-pass groups in terms of adequacy rates (91.3%, 92.5%, and 92.5%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The number of needle passes does not significantly affect the cytological adequacy in ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration of solid or predominantly solid thyroid nodules.
