Abstract

Aluminum lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) sensitive to millimeter-wave photons have been shown to exhibit high quality factors, making them highly sensitive and multiplexable. The superconducting gap of aluminum limits aluminum LEKIDs to photon frequencies above 100 GHz. Manganese-doped aluminum (Al-Mn) has a tunable critical temperature and could therefore be an attractive material for LEKIDs sensitive to frequencies below 100 GHz if the internal quality factor remains sufficiently high when manganese is added to the film. To investigate, we measured some of the key properties of Al-Mn LEKIDs. A prototype eight-element LEKID array was fabricated using a 40 nm thick film of Al-Mn deposited on a 500 {\mu}m thick high-resistivity, float-zone silicon substrate. The manganese content was 900 ppm, the measured $T_c = 694\pm1$ mK, and the resonance frequencies were near 150 MHz. Using measurements of the forward scattering parameter $S_{21}$ at various bath temperatures between 65 and 250 mK, we determined that the Al-Mn LEKIDs we fabricated have internal quality factors greater than $2 \times 10^5$, which is high enough for millimeter-wave astrophysical observations. In the dark conditions under which these devices were measured, the fractional frequency noise spectrum shows a shallow slope that depends on bath temperature and probe tone amplitude, which could be two-level system noise. The anticipated white photon noise should dominate this level of low-frequency noise when the detectors are illuminated with millimeter-waves in future measurements. The LEKIDs responded to light pulses from a 1550 nm light-emitting diode, and we used these light pulses to determine that the quasiparticle lifetime is 60 {\mu}s., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Due to the large spin-orbital coupling in the layered 5d-transition metal chalcogenides compound, the occurrence of superconductivity in Ir2-xPdxTe2 offers a good chance to search for possible topological superconducting states in this system. We did comprehensive studies on the superconducting properties and electronic structures of single crystalline Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 samples. The superconducting gap size, critical fields and coherence length along different directions were experimentally determined. Macroscopic bulk measurements and microscopic low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy results suggest that Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 possesses a BCS-like s-wave state. No sign of zero bias conductance peak were found in the vortex core at 0.4K.

Abstract

Topological insulators (TIs) and graphene present two unique classes of materials which are characterized by spin polarized (helical) and non-polarized Dirac-cone band structures, respectively. The importance of many-body interactions that renormalize the linear bands near Dirac point in graphene has been well recognized and attracted much recent attention. However, renormalization of the helical Dirac point has not been observed in TIs. Here, we report the experimental observation of the renormalized quasi-particle spectrum with a skewed Dirac cone in a single Bi bilayer grown on Bi2Te3 substrate, from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. First-principles band calculations indicate that the quasi-particle spectra are likely associated with the hybridization between the extrinsic substrate-induced Dirac states of Bi bilayer and the intrinsic surface Dirac states of Bi2Te3 film at close energy proximity. Without such hybridization, only single-particle Dirac spectra are observed in a single Bi bilayer grown on Bi2Se3, where the extrinsic Dirac states Bi bilayer and the intrinsic Dirac states of Bi2Se3 are well separated in energy. The possible origins of many-body interactions are discussed. Our findings provide a means to manipulate topological surface states.

Abstract

The electronic and magnetic properties of iron-doped topological insulator Bi1.84-xFe0.16CaxSe3 single crystals were studied. By co-doping Fe and Ca atoms, ferromagnetic bulk states with different carrier density (from n-type to p-type) were obtained. Effective magnetic moments for each Fe atom was estimated as small as about 0.07$\mu$B. Magnetic and non-magnetic phases separation was observed in all samples. Our results suggest that the bulk ferromagnetism in Fe-doped Bi2Se3 is not intrinsic and regardless of carrier density.

Abstract

Ultra-thin Bi films show exotic electronic structure and novel quantum effects, especially the widely studied Bi (111) film. Using reflection high-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy, we studied the structure and morphology evolution of Bi (111) thin films grown on Bi2Se3. A strongly compressed, but quickly released in-plane lattice of Bi (111) is found in the first three bilayers. The first bilayer of Bi shows a fractal growth mode with flat surface, while the second and third bilayer show a periodic buckling due to the strong compression of the in-plane lattice. Abstract

A self-assembled iron(II) phthalocyanine single layer adsorbed on the topological insulator Bi2Te3 was investigated by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations. Although the molecule-substrate interaction is dominated by a relatively weak van der Waals force, the local density of states of Fe was found to strongly depend on the adsorption sites, resulting in a supermolecular lattice. Spin-polarized measurements show that the magnetic moment of iron(II) phthalocyanine persists with an in-plane magnetic easy axis, which was fürther confirmed by density functional calculations. Abstract

The surface magnetic property plays a key role in determining magnetic related quantum phenomena of magnetic topological insulators. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we investigate the surface magnetism and anisotropy of a Cr doped topological insulator: Cr0.05Sb1.95Te3. It is found that the topological surface state of Cr0.05Sb1.95Te3 is spin polarized in the surface plane while the bulk shows a ferromagnetism with an out-of-plane easy axis. The upper and lower branch of the helical Dirac cone harbors the opposite spin polarization and the polarization at the Dirac point is zero. Abstract

Due to the large spin-orbital coupling in the layered 5d-transition metal chalcogenides compound, the occurrence of superconductivity in doped Ir2–xPdxTe2 offers a good chance to search for possible topological superconducting states in this system. We did comprehensive studies on the superconducting properties and electronic structures of single crystalline Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 samples. The superconducting gap size, critical fields, and coherence length along different directions were experimentally determined. Macroscopic bulk measurements and microscopic low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy results suggest that Ir0.95Pd0.05Te2 possesses a BCS-like s-wave state. By combining scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory band calculations, we directly observe and resolve the onedimensional edge states of single bilayer (BL) Bi(lll) islands on clean Bi2Te3 and Bi(l Uncovered Bi2Te3 substrates. The edge states are localized in the vicinity of step edges having an ∼2 nm wide spatial distribution in real space and reside in the energy gap of the Bi(lll) BL. 39. High-field magnetization and electronic spin resonance study in the twisted honeycomb lattice α -Mn 2 V 2 O 7 .

Abstract

We report the single-crystal growth of Mn 2 V 2 O 7 and the results of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization up to 55 T and high-frequency electric spin resonance (ESR) measurements for its low-temperature α phase. Two antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at 17.5 K and 3 K and obvious magnetic anisotropy are observed in α -Mn 2 V 2 O 7 upon cooling. In pulsed high magnetic fields, the compound reaches the saturation magnetic moment of ∼10.5 μ B for each molecular formula at around 45 T after two undergoing AFM phase transitions at H c1 ≈ 16 T, H c2 ≈ 34.5 T for H //[11-0] and H sf1 = 2.5 T, H sf2 = 7 T for H //[001]. In these two directions, two and seven resonance modes are detected by ESR spectroscopy, respectively. The ω 1 and ω 2 modes of H //[11-0] can be well described by two-sublattice AFM resonance mode with two zero-field gaps at 94.51 GHz and 169.28 GHz, indicating a hard-axis feature. The seven modes for H //[001] are partially separated by the critical fields of H sf1 and H sf2 , displaying the two signs of spin-flop transition. The fittings of ω c1 and ω c2 modes yield zero-field gaps at 69.50 GHz and 84.73 GHz for H //[001], confirming the axis-type anisotropy. The saturated moment and gyromagnetic ratio indicate the Mn 2+ ion in α -Mn 2 V 2 O 7 is in a high spin state with orbital moment completely quenched. A quasi-one-dimensional magnetism with a zig-zag-chain spin configuration is suggested in α -Mn 2 V 2 O 7 , due to the special neighbor interactions caused by a distorted network structure with honeycomb layer., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Abstract

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a common psychiatric mood disorder affecting more than 1-2% of the general population of different European countries. Unfortunately, there is no objective laboratory-based test to aid BD diagnosis or monitor its progression, and little is known about the molecular basis of BD. Here, we performed a comparative proteomic study to identify differentially expressed plasma proteins in various BD mood states (depressed BD, manic BD, and euthymic BD) relative to healthy controls. A total of 10 euthymic BD, 20 depressed BD, 15 manic BD, and 20 demographically matched healthy control subjects were recruited. Seven high-abundance proteins were immunodepleted in plasma samples from the 4 experimental groups, which were then subjected to proteome-wide expression profiling by two-dimensional electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight/time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry. Proteomic results were validated by immunoblotting and bioinformatically analyzed using MetaCore. From a total of 32 proteins identified with 1.5-fold changes in expression compared with healthy controls, 16 proteins were perturbed in BD independent of mood state, while 16 proteins were specifically associated with particular BD mood states. Two mood-independent differential proteins, apolipoprotein (Apo) A1 and Apo L1, suggest that BD pathophysiology may be associated with early perturbations in lipid metabolism. Moreover, down-regulation of one mood-dependent protein, carbonic anhydrase 1 (CA-1), suggests it may be involved in the pathophysiology of depressive episodes in BD. Thus, BD pathophysiology may be associated with early perturbations in lipid metabolism that are independent of mood state, while CA-1 may be involved in the pathophysiology of depressive episodes.

Abstract

The localization of the cell wall proline-rich proteins (PRPs), and the gene expression of the cell wall glycine-rich proteins (GRPs) and the hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HRGPs) were examined in several dicot species. The PRPs are accumulated in the corner walls of the cortex where several cells are joined together and in the protoxylem cell walls of 3-day-old soybean root. In 1-month-old soybean plants, the PRPs are specifically deposited in xylem vessel elements of the young stem, and they are accumulated in both phloem fibers and xylem vessel elements and fibers of the older stem. Likewise, the PRPs are localized in xylem vessel elements and fibers in tomato, petunia, potato and tobacco stems. They are also found in outer and inner phloem fiber cell walls of tomato stem and in outer phloem fiber cell walls of petunia stem. The gene expression of the HRGPs and the GRPs is developmentally regulated in tomato, petunia and tobacco stems. HRGP mRNAs are abundant in outer and inner phloem regions, while GRP mRNAs are present mostly in primary xylem and in the cambium region. Immunocytochemical localization showed that the GRPs have a localization pattern similar to that of the PRPs in tomato, petunia and tobacco stems.
