Abstract

This paper addresses the challenge of mitigating low-frequency flow noise signals in autonomous underwater vehicles through the optimization of a placoid-scale skin. Drawing inspiration from the bio-inspired surface features of cylindrical shell structures, an enhanced design of placoid-scale skin is developed using 3D printing technology. This improved structure effectively reduced boundary layer vortices and wake intensity, thereby contributing to the suppression of low-frequency flow noise signals. Experimental results demonstrate that the notable reduction in low-frequency flow noise within the frequency range of 0–500 Hz, with average noise reduction of approximately 5 dB observed at 150 Hz. This reduction is validated by a combination of numerical simulations and experimental testing, confirming the efficacy of the optimized placoid-scale skin in attenuating the low-frequency flow noise associated with uniformly advancing turbulent boundary layers underwater. 9. Highly Sensitive Optoelectronic Oscillator-Based FBG Sensor via Coarse Sampling and Vernier Effect

Abstract

A highly sensitive method utilizing coarse frequency sampling and Vernier effect for optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To generate the Vernier effect, the frequency sampling interval is set close to the free spectral range of the OEO. Cubic spline fitting and power normalization were applied to obtain smooth sampling curve. The peak frequency of the fitted curve was chosen to measure the spectral shift. In the temperature test experiment, a controllable sensitivity was achieved by changing the sampling interval. The sensitivity of 222.84kHz $/^{\circ }$ C was obtained, which was 127.26 times higher than that of traditional single-loop OEO. Our method requires no modifications to the sensing circuit. Furthermore, it can be used in other OEO-based sensors, indicating promising application prospects.

Abstract

The application of a bidirectional laser requires the laser intensity in both directions to be balanced. However, the CW and CCW light intensities in current bidirectional erbium-doped fiber laser experiments differ due to the gain competition effect. There is no report on equalizing the intensity in the CW and CCW directions. This paper proposes a bidirectional non-reciprocal optical attenuator using the Faraday optical rotation effect. Continuous attenuation adjustment is realized by changing the angle between the polarizer's transmission axis and the linear polarized light. In this study, we analyzed the influence of different parameters on the device's performance, built a non-reciprocal attenuator, and tested the bidirectional attenuation curve, which was consistent with the simulation results. The device was integrated into a bidirectional fiber laser, and the light intensity in both directions was balanced through non-reciprocal adjustment. Combined with closed-loop control, the average intensity difference fluctuation between the two directions was controlled at 0.28% relative to the average power, realizing stable long-term bidirectional fiber laser intensity equalization. Abstract

Interferometric fiber-optic hydrophones are an important means in the field of underwater acoustic detection. The design of the hydrophone sensor head is the key technology related to its detection sensitivity. In this paper, a high-sensitivity cuboid interferometric fiber-optic hydrophone based on planar rectangular film sensing is proposed, and the sensitivity of the sensor is compared with that of the widely used air-backed mandrel hydrophone under the same conditions. The acoustic characteristic models of the two types of sensors were established by theoretical calculation and simulation analysis to obtain the theoretical pressure sensitivity. Some experiments were performed to examine the theory and design. According to the experiment results, the mean phase sensitivity of the mandrel type was −112.85 dB re 1 rad/μPa in the operating frequency range of 10–300 Hz, and that of the cuboid type was −84.50 dB re 1 rad/μPa. The latter was 28.35 dB higher than the former was. These results are useful for improving hydrophone sensitivity.

46. All-optical broadcast and multicast technologies based on PPLN waveguide

Abstract

All-optical 1×4 broadcast and 1×3 multicast experiments of a 40-Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying (RZ-OOK) signal based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide are demonstrated in this letter. Clear opened eye diagrams and error-free performance are achieved for the broadcast signals at 1541.3, 1543.7, 1548.5, and 1550.9 nm. Multicast technology uses cascaded second-harmonic generation and difference-frequency generation in a Ti:PPLN waveguide. An error-free operation with a negligible power penalty is achieved for the three wavelength-division multiplexing multicast signals at 1533, 1537, and 1541 nm.
