Abstract

A series of γ-alumina with different pore sizes (5.7 nm–21.6 nm) and similar specific surface areas were synthesized via an organic-free method and their adsorption rates and capacities for Congo red (CR), direct blue 78 (DB78) and direct green 26 (DG26) were investigated. The kinetics study reveals that the dye adsorptions of all γ-alumina samples fit the pseudo-2nd-order model. For CR, its k2 and the pore size of absorbent are in a linear relationship at low dye concentrations. Both of the experimental results and Langmuir isotherm calculation results suggest that the dye adsorption capacities of the γ-alumina prepared in our lab are much higher than those of other γ-alumina reported in literatures. GA-1 with the largest specific area of surface and largest size of pores exhibits a CR adsorption capacity up to 4213.6 mg/g. In addition, initial dye adsorption rates of the γ-alumina prepared in-house are much higher than that of the γ-alumina prepared with the commercially available alumina under the same conditions.

27. Head-Up Display Graphic Warning to Support Collision Avoidance: Effect of Graphic Animation and Border on Driving Behavior and Eye Movement Pattern

Abstract

Several studies have determined the positive effect of head-up display (HUD) graphic warning to support collision avoidance. However, the visual complexity of the graphic warning may overburden the driver. Design principles and empirical evidence suggest that animation and border designs may increase visual saliency and reduce the visual complexity of graphic warnings. This study aimed to examine the effects of animation (within-subject factors: animated/non-animated) and border (within-subject factors: with/without border) on drivers’ attention and driving performance. Thirty drivers (19 females) experienced five warning conditions (the no-warning condition was the baseline condition) in simulated driving conditions. The results showed the positive effects of animation and border designs on the visual detection time (animation: 25.64% reduction; border: 6.73% reduction) and attention allocation strategies (animation: 9.53% less dwell time on the warning; border: 6.62% less dwell time on the warning) when compared with the original HUD warning. We only observed a positive effect of borders on brake reaction time (17.14% reduction). However, the positive effect of the border design on brake reaction time was only observed in the non-animated warning condition, and not in the animated warning condition. A limitation of the study is that the results were generated from young and inexperienced drivers, and they should be generalized to other driver groups only with caution. Overall, we recommend using non-animated warnings with borders in conditions that require fast reactions, and animated warnings with borders in conditions that require a superior attention strategy.

Abstract

The characteristics of unsteady cavitation flow under different cavitation numbers are investigated experimentally. An optical test rig is designed to visualize the cavitation flow and the cavity length is defined based on high-speed camera technology. The development of cavitation flow can be divided into inception and fusion region, expansion region and collapse region. Due to the interaction between the re-entrant jet and the cavity interface, the cavitation bubbles near the solid wall collapse earlier than them in the downstream. The cavitation number is also the important factor determining the cavity length pulsation. Further analysis shows that the smaller the cavitation number, the smaller the frequency of cavity length fluctuations and the larger the mean cavity length. The cavitation intensity is stronger at lower cavitation number. Meanwhile, the cycle collapsing frequency of cavitation is around 220–320 Hz. With the decrease of cavitation number, the amplitude of cavitation pulsation increases while the corresponding collapsing frequency decreases.

Abstract

Luminescence from BaFBr:Eu2+ phosphors by photosimulation of longer wavelength than F absorption bands was seen after x-irradiation for 10 sec. This was due to the surface states or intrinsic defects of the powders. Results indicated that the luminescence by photostimulation into F bands can be reduced by electron migration from F centers into the surface states or intrinsic defects, hence reducing the x-ray storage or image stability. Surface passivation can reduce these defects and enhance the phosphors or image plate quality.

Abstract

Many synthesis parameters can influence zeolite crystallization, which include the molar ratio of reagents, water content, temperature, the selection of extraframework cations (organic or inorganic template) and so on. In this paper, two new materials, BUCT-1 with cuboid morphology and BUCT-2 with plate-like morphology were obtained based on the synthesis conditions of ITQ-17 by adjusting the GeO2/SiO2 ratio, H2O/TO2 ratio and temperature. The influence of the three factors on crystal size, crystallinity and phase selection and transformation was carefully discussed. Therein, phase selection and transformation is determined by their synergistic effects; while the influence on crystal size and crystallinity is different for different materials, which is caused by the differences in their structure, or in other words, the building unit, and chemical composition. In addition, the structure of BUCT-2 has already been solved as the stacking of sti layers, and it was identified as pure germanate molecular sieves. Meanwhile, through the characterization of XRD, ICP-AES, IR and STA, some topological information on BUCT-1, such as unit cell parameters, pore size and connectivity, was predicted and the work to present its final structure is still going on. 48. Modeling and performance analysis of public safety wireless networks

Abstract

Public safety wireless networks (PSWNs) play a vital role in operations of emergency agencies such as police and fire departments. In this thesis, we describe analysis and modeling of traffic data collected from the Emergency Communications for Southwestern British Columbia (E-Comm) PSWN. We analyze network and agency call traffic and find that lognormal distribution and exponential distribution are adequate for modeling call holding time and call interarrival time, respectively. We also describe a newly developed wide area radio network simulator, named WarnSim. We use WarnSim simulations to validate the proposed traffic model, evaluate the performance of the E-Comm network, and predict network performance in cases of traffic increase. We also provide recommendations on allocating E-Comm network resources to deal with the increased traffic volume.
