The robust tensor completion (RTC) problem, which aims to reconstruct a low-rank tensor from partially observed tensor contaminated by a sparse tensor, has received increasing attention. In this paper, by leveraging the superior expression of the fully-connected tensor network (FCTN) decomposition, we propose a $\textbf{FCTN}$-based $\textbf{r}$obust $\textbf{c}$onvex optimization model (RC-FCTN) for the RTC problem. Then, we rigorously establish the exact recovery guarantee for the RC-FCTN. For solving the constrained optimization model RC-FCTN, we develop an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based algorithm, which enjoys the global convergence guarantee. Moreover, we suggest a $\textbf{FCTN}$-based $\textbf{r}$obust $\textbf{n}$on$\textbf{c}$onvex optimization model (RNC-FCTN) for the RTC problem. A proximal alternating minimization (PAM)-based algorithm is developed to solve the proposed RNC-FCTN. Meanwhile, we theoretically derive the convergence of the PAM-based algorithm. Comprehensive numerical experiments in several applications, such as video completion and video background subtraction, demonstrate that proposed methods are superior to several state-of-the-art methods.

One of the key problems in tensor completion is the number of uniformly random sample entries required for recovery guarantee. The main aim of this paper is to study $n_1 \times n_2 \times n_3$ third-order tensor completion based on transformed tensor singular value decomposition, and provide a bound on the number of required sample entries. Our approach is to make use of the multi-rank of the underlying tensor instead of its tubal rank in the bound. In numerical experiments on synthetic and imaging data sets, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed bound for the number of sample entries. Moreover, our theoretical results are valid to any unitary transformation applied to $n_3$-dimension under transformed tensor singular value decomposition.

The goal of tensor completion is to fill in missing entries of a partially known tensor under a low-rank constraint. In this paper, we mainly study low rank third-order tensor completion problems by using Riemannian optimization methods on the smooth manifold. Here the tensor rank is defined to be a set of matrix ranks where the matrices are the slices of the transformed tensor obtained by applying the Fourier-related transformation onto the tubes of the original tensor. We show that with suitable incoherence conditions on the underlying low rank tensor, the proposed Riemannian optimization method is guaranteed to converge and find such low rank tensor with a high probability. In addition, numbers of sample entries required for solving low rank tensor completion problem under different initialized methods are studied and derived. This paper describes a new algorithm for computing Nonnegative Low Rank Matrix (NLRM) approximation for nonnegative matrices. Our approach is completely different from classical nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) which has been studied for more than twenty five years. For a given nonnegative matrix, the usual NMF approach is to determine two nonnegative low rank matrices such that the distance between their product and the given nonnegative matrix is as small as possible. However, the proposed NLRM approach is to determine a nonnegative low rank matrix such that the distance between such matrix and the given nonnegative matrix is as small as possible. There are two advantages. (i) The minimized distance by the proposed NLRM method can be smaller than that by the NMF method, and it implies that the proposed NLRM method can obtain a better low rank matrix approximation. (ii) Our low rank matrix admits a matrix singular value decomposition automatically which provides a significant index based on singular values that can be used to identify important singular basis vectors, while this information cannot be obtained in the classical NMF. The proposed NLRM approximation algorithm was derived using the alternating projection on the low rank matrix manifold and the non-negativity property. Shape had been intuitively recognized to play a dominant role in determining the global motion patterns of bio-molecular assemblies. However, it is not clear exactly how shape determines the motion patterns. What about the local interactions that hold a structure together to a certain shape? The contributions of global shape and local interactions usually mix together and are difficult to tease part. In this work, we use symmetry to elucidate the distinct roles of global shape and local interactions in protein dynamics. Symmetric complexes provide an ideal platform for this task since in them the effects of local interactions and global shape are separable, allowing their distinct roles to be identified. Our key findings based on symmetric assemblies are: (i) the motion patterns of each subunit are determined primarily by intra-subunit interactions (IRSi), and secondarily by inter-subunit interactions (IESi); (ii) the motion patterns of the whole assembly are fully dictated by the global symmetry/shape and have nothing to do with local iESi or IRSi. Dial-a-ride problem (DARP) deals with the transportation of users between pickup and drop-off locations associated with specified time windows. This paper proposes a novel algorithm called multi-atomic annealing (MATA) to solve static dial-a-ride problem. Two new local search operators (burn and reform), a new construction heuristic and two request sequencing mechanisms (Sorted List and Random List) are developed. Computational experiments conducted on various standard DARP test instances prove that MATA is an expeditious meta-heuristic in contrast to other existing methods. In all experiments, MATA demonstrates the capability to obtain high quality solutions, faster convergence, and quicker attainment of a first feasible solution. It is observed that MATA attains a first feasible solution 29.8 to 65.1% faster, and obtains a final solution that is 3.9 to 5.2% better, when compared to other algorithms within 60 sec., Comment: To be presented at the IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics (SOLI), Singapore, 2018
