The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

SCINTILLATING FIBER DETECTOR, STRUCTURE-FUNCTION F2(X - Abstract
A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV is presented. The x-range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q2 range is between 280 GeV2 and 3670 GeV2. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb-1. The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q2 values.

The process ppBAR --> e-nu-gamma + X is studied as square-root s = 630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters-kappa and lambda which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WW-gamma coupling. We find kappa = 1(-2.2)+2.6 and lambda = 0(-1.8)+1.7 and their 95% confidence limits -3.5 < kappa < 5.9 and -3.6 < lambda < 3.5. The results are model independent and in good agreement with the standard model values, kappa = 1 and lambda = 0.

A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN ppBAR Coolider at square-root s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb-1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

Results are given on a search for the decay W+/- --> pi+/--gamma with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. No signal for such a process is observed and upper limits on the ratio R = GAMMA(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma)/GAMMA(W+/- --> e+/--nu) < 4.9 x 10(-3) and on the branching ratio BR(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma) < 5.4 x 10(-4) are derived at 95% confidence level.

We describe a program of studies aimed at determining whether the track stub/preshower technique of electron identification can be used at the highest operating luminosities of the proposed LHC collider. The proposal covers detector and electronics developments required for the construction of a track-stub and preshower detector preceding the electromagnetic calorimeter of an LHC experiment.

- Abstract
The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using collisions at GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to beg
τ W /ge W =0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). The decay modeZ→τ+ →τ+ is observed and also found to be consistent withe-τ universality.- Published

- Abstract
Background: It is generally believed that the pathogenesis of PINK1/parkin-related Parkinson's disease (PD) is due to a disturbance in mitochondrial quality control. However, recent studies have found that PINK1 and Parkin play a significant role in mitochondrial calcium homeostasis and are involved in the regulation of mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contact sites (MERCSs)., Objective: The aim of our study was to perform an in-depth analysis of the role of MERCSs and impaired calcium homeostasis in PINK1/Parkin-linked PD., Methods: In our study, we used induced pluripotent stem cell-derived dopaminergic neurons from patients with PD with loss-of-function mutations in PINK1 or PRKN. We employed a split-GFP-based contact site sensor in combination with the calcium-sensitive dye Rhod-2 AM and applied Airyscan live-cell super-resolution microscopy to determine how MERCSs are involved in the regulation of mitochondrial calcium homeostasis., Results: Our results showed that thapsigargin-induced calcium stress leads to an increase of the abundance of narrow MERCSs in wild-type neurons. Intriguingly, calcium levels at the MERCSs remained stable, whereas the increased net calcium influx resulted in elevated mitochondrial calcium levels. However, PINK1-PD or PRKN-PD neurons showed an increased abundance of MERCSs at baseline, accompanied by an inability to further increase MERCSs upon thapsigargin-induced calcium stress. Consequently, calcium distribution at MERCSs and within mitochondria was disrupted., Conclusions: Our results demonstrated how the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria work together to cope with calcium stress in wild-type neurons. In addition, our results suggests that PRKN deficiency affects the dynamics and composition of MERCSs differently from PINK1 deficiency, resulting in differentially affected calcium homeostasis. © 2023 The Authors. - Abstract
Introduction: Thrombolysis has been shown to improve neurological recovery in acute stroke. But the response to thrombolysis is variable across patients. We sought to investigate this variability by analyzing the lesion patterns following systemic thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) and tirofiban in middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke., Methods: One hundred three consecutive stroke patients (67 +/- 14 years) were grouped according to the site of MCA occlusion and successful or failed recanalization as assessed with magnetic resonance angiography. Infarct lesions were analyzed in T2-weighted magnetic resonance images after 10 days., Results: Patients recovered markedly upon successful recanalization following thrombolysis (p < 0.05) but remained severely impaired when there was no recanalization within 24 h. Infarct lesions were smaller after successful than after failed recanalization (p < 0.005). They occurred throughout the cerebral cortex on the cerebral convexity in distal MCA occlusions with large individual heterogeneity. In contrast, there was a large lesion overlap in insular cortex, basal ganglia, internal capsule, and paraventricular white matter in proximal MCA occlusions., Conclusion: Systemic thrombolysis with rtPA and tirofiban of MCA occlusions resulted in early neurological recovery and preferentially peri-insular infarcts. In failed recanalization of the MCA stem there was a large lesion overlap in the hemispheric white matter and a lack of recovery.
