Context. Labile soil carbon and nitrogen are important indicators for evaluating carbon sequestration and nutrient availability under forest management such as thinning. Aims. This study assessed the effects of thinning on labile soil carbon and nitrogen indices in a naturally regenerated oak forest. Methods. Un-thinned control, 15% thinning, and 30% thinning were set up, and labile soil carbon and nitrogen (microbial biomass, permanganate oxidisable carbon, dissolved carbon and nitrogen, and inorganic nitrogen) and C:N balance indices (C:N ratio and threshold element ratio) were measured after 6 years. Key results. Thinning generally increased labile soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations (P < 0.01); however, their fraction within the total soil carbon and nitrogen decreased under thinning. Redundancy analysis revealed that the remaining deadwood mass was the most influential factor affecting such differences in labile soil carbon and nitrogen indices across the three treatments (P < 0.01), although soil moisture had an effect as well (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the dissolved C:N ratio was higher than threshold element ratio only in 15% and 30% thinnings, indicating that thinning could shift the limiting factor for microbial growth from carbon to nitrogen by adding deadwoods, which provided carbon-rich substrates. Conclusions. Overall, results demonstrate that deadwood retention and soil microclimatic changes could be the significant factors affecting soil carbon and nitrogen storage and the associated microbial affinity in thinned forests. Implications. Therefore, sustainable forestry strategies for thinning residue management should be addressed to reinforce soil carbon and nitrogen conditions and the forest ecosystem functions. This study focused on understanding biodiversity variability in response to climate change as an environmental stressor from a carbon cycle perspective. As the frequency and magnitude of environmental stresses are expected to increase due to rising carbon concentrations, these changes may affect the variability in biodiversity. However, several studies have argued that conventional methods for biodiversity assessment, primarily based on arithmetic indices utilized in national policies, are inadequate for accurately assessing these interactions among species, abiotic changes, and material cycling. Here, we indicate that environmental stressors that occur at various scales and domains, from macroscopic to microscopic, and their effects on ecosystems are multi-dimensional. Furthermore, environmental stresses not only affect organisms inhabiting these ecosystems but these organisms, in return, influence the carbon cycle through life history changes resulting from these stresses. The results of our review suggest that these processes are sequentially interconnected, forming self-reinforcing feedback loops. Ultimately, an integrated approach is necessary to understand biodiversity variability in complex and open ecosystems. The effect of invertebrates like termites and beetle larvae on dead wood could be time-dependent due to changes in wood traits and invertebrate species composition over time. This study assessed changes in the impact of termites and beetle larvae on dead wood decomposition in two tree species, Pinus densiflora and Quercus acutissima, in South Korea over a 6-year period (2016–2022). Wood samples were prepared, with half of them encased in a stainless-steel mesh to prevent access by invertebrates larger than 0.26 mm. These samples were placed in three regions representative of different environments in South Korea (southern, eastern, and western). Significant variations in the mass loss of dead wood were observed based on the tree species, region, and time (p < 0.05). The mean standardized invertebrate effect, assessed with Hedges' d and a 95% confidence interval, was 0.83 ± 2.19 for P. densiflora and 1.08 ± 2.26 for Q. acutissima. Termites were found in the southern and western regions, with the highest invertebrate effect after two years. Our results indicate that the influence of invertebrates, especially termites, on dead wood decomposition could be most significant during the initial decomposition stages, as noted in the southern region of this research. Aims: An open-field warming experiment enables us to test the effects of projected temperature increase on change in plant phenology with fewer confounding factors and to study phenological response to temperature ranges beyond natural variability. This study aims to (i) examine the effect of temperature increase on leaf unfolding and senescence of oriental oak (Quercus variabilis Blume) under experimental warming and (ii) measure temperature-related parameters used in estimating phenological response to temperature elevation. Methods: Using an open-field warming system with infrared heaters, we increased the air temperature by ∼3°C in the warmed plots compared with that of the control plots consistently for 2 years. Leaf unfolding and senescence dates of Q. variabilis seedlings were recorded and temperature-related phenological parameters were analysed. Important Findings: The timing of leaf unfolding was advanced by 3-8 days (1.1-3.0 days/°C) and the date of leaf senescence was delayed by 14-19 days (5.0-7.3 days/°C) under elevated air temperatures. However, the cumulative degree days (CDD) of leaf unfolding were not significantly changed by experimental warming, which suggest the applicability of a constant CDD value to estimate the change in spring leaf phenology under 3°C warming. Consistent ranges of advancement and temperature sensitivity in spring phenology and delayed autumn phenology and proposed temperature parameters from this study might be applied to predict future phenological change.

Aim: Despite mounting empirical evidence regarding the positive effects of forest structural diversity (STRDIV) on forest functioning, the underlying biotic mechanisms and controlling abiotic factors remain poorly understood. This study provides the first assessment of the interactive effects of STRDIV and diversity in species and functional traits on aboveground biomass (AGB) in natural forests in West and East Africa. Location: West and East Africa. Time period: 2014–2020. Major taxa studied: Woody plants. Methods: Using data from 276 plots and 7993 trees of 207 species distributed across various types of natural forests and major climatic zones of Africa, linear mixed‐effects and structural equation models, we have evaluated how alternative causal relationships between STRDIV and taxonomic and functional diversity attributes influence AGB, while accounting for the effects of environmental covariates. We also assessed the consistency of these relationships across floristically and environmentally homogenous forest types. Results: We found that the positive effects of STRDIV on AGB were underpinned by both the community‐weighted mean (CWM) of trait values (selection effects) and species richness (niche complementarity), but the relative importance of these effects varied depending on forest types. Across the forest types, STRDIV primarily mediated the effects of CWM of traits and species richness on AGB. We also found that STRDIV–AGB relationships were constrained by resource (water and nutrient) availability. Main conclusions: Our findings provide novel insights into the role of functional traits as key determinants of the effects of STRDIV on AGB in tropical forests. We suggest that forest management and climate change mitigation strategies aimed at conserving biodiversity, and fostering biomass storage through increased STRDIV should focus on maintaining high levels of functionally dominant species while also increasing tree species diversity. We developed a simple forest soil carbon model (Korean Forest Soil Carbon model, KFSC) requiring a small number of parameters to evaluate the forest soil carbon stocks and dynamics. The KFSC was composed of live biomass (BIO), primary dead organic matter (DOM) (AWD: aboveground woody debris; BWD: belowground woody debris; ALT: aboveground litter; and BLT: belowground litter), and secondary DOM (HUM: humus and SOC: soil organic carbon). The KFSC was validated against six Pinus densiflora forests at Gyeonggi province in central Korea and validation results showed that the model predicted the AWD, ALT, and SOC stocks with high precision (r2=0.90-0.98, slope = 0.95-0.98). We simulated 160 years of carbon dynamics of the P. densiflora forests in Gyeonggi province (11,607 ha) under alternative clear-cut intervals that had been taking place in the past (30, 50, and 80 years). Simulated total SOC stock ranged from 298.7 to 520.5 Gg C depending on the scenario and increased with time in all scenarios. The estimated total SOC stock was higher in the scenario of less frequent clear-cut, while its annual increment was higher in the scenario of more frequent clear-cut in the past. The KFSC will be useful, especially for simulating soil carbon dynamics in forests with scarce information, and has the potential to estimate soil carbon dynamics at a national scale by incorporating with geographical information system. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Huperzia arctica (Tolm.) Sipliv. 1973 is a lycophyte species belonging to the Lycopodiaceae family, which is widely distributed in the Arctic region of Svalbard, Norway. To determine its taxonomic position, we sequenced the chloroplast genome of H. arctica. The complete chloroplast genome of H. arctica is 153,956 bp in length with 122 annotated genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, 31 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. To evaluate its evolutionary position, we performed phylogenetic analysis using 36 conserved orthologous protein-coding gene sequences from the chloroplast genomes of H. arctica and publicly available data from other Lycopodiaceae. H. arctica formed a monophyletic group with four other Huperzia species: H. lucidula, H. serrata, H. crispata, and H. javanica. Indian agriculture sector is a significant emitter of Green House Gas (GHG), which is projected to increase by 47% between 2011 and 2020. In response to this, India has committed itself to voluntarily reduce its emissions intensity (emissions per unit GDP) between 20 to 25 percent below 2005 levels by 2020. This would require rapid and significant scaling up of mitigation efforts including the agriculture sector, which remains a challenge, as mitigation is not a priority in Indian agriculture. The study found out that in-spite of numerous mitigation technologies that are readily available for takeoff, the scale of adoption and deployment is far from sufficient to meet the emission targets set by the Government of India, mainly due to lack of financial incentives, capacity building of farmers, and an enabling policy at different levels. This study identified a suite of feasible interventions for promoting low carbon agriculture such as: low tillage systems as it has negative costs due to savings on tillage and fuel; introduction of superior livestock breeds to reduce numbers (especially unproductive cattle) and increase yield; use of livestock wastes to produce energy for cooking and heating through bio-gas technology can not only reduce methane emission but also save electricity costs for the households and; introduction of carbon credits and exploration of domestic carbon markets. An enabling policy environment must be created for these interventions to take off.
