Abstract

We study the (1+1) focussing nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation for an initial condition with compactly-supported parabolic profile and phase depending quadratically on the spatial coordinate. In the absence of dispersion, using the natural class of self-similar solutions, we provide a criterion for blow-up in finite time, generalising a result by Talanov et al. In the presence of dispersion, we numerically show that the same criterion determines, even beyond the semi-classical regime, whether the solution relaxes or develops a high-order rogue wave, whose onset time is predicted by the corresponding dispersionless catastrophe time. The sign of the chirp appears to determine the prevailing scenario among two competing mechanisms for rogue wave formation. For negative values, the numerical simulations are suggestive of the dispersive regularisation of a gradient catastrophe described by Bertola and Tovbis for a different class of smooth, bell-shaped initial data. As the chirp becomes positive, the rogue wave seems to result from the interaction of counter-propagating dispersive dam break flows, as in the box problem recently studied by El, Khamis and Tovbis. Abstract

Models describing long wave-short wave resonant interactions have many physical applications from fluid dynamics to plasma physics. We consider here the Yajima-Oikawa-Newell (YON) model, which has been recently introduced combining the interaction terms of two long wave-short wave, integrable models, one proposed by Yajima-Oikawa, and the other one by Newell. The new YON model contains two arbitrary coupling constants and it is still integrable - in the sense of possessing a Lax pair - for any values of these coupling constants. It reduces to the Yajima-Oikawa or the Newell systems for special choices of these two parameters. We construct families of periodic and solitary wave solutions, which display the generation of very long waves. We also compute the explicit expression of a number of conservation laws.

Abstract

We consider the propagation of short waves which generate waves of much longer (infinite) wave-length. Model equations of such long wave-short wave resonant interaction, including integrable ones, are well-known and have received much attention because of their appearance in various physical contexts, particularly fluid dynamics and plasma physics. Here we introduce a new long wave-short wave integrable model which generalises those first proposed by Yajima-Oikawa and by Newell. By means of its associated Lax pair, we carry out the linear stability analysis of its continuous wave solutions by introducing the stability spectrum as an algebraic curve in the complex plane. This is done starting from the construction of the eigenfunctions of the linearised long wave-short wave model equations. The geometrical features of this spectrum are related to the stability/instability properties of the solution under scrutiny. Stability spectra for the plane wave solutions are fully classified in the parameter space together with types of modulational instabilities.

Abstract

Abstract Graphene enhanced thermoplastic composites offer the possibility of conductive aerospace structures suitable for applications from electrostatic dissipation, to lightning strike protection and heat dissipation. Spray deposition of liquid phase exfoliated (LPE) aqueous graphene suspensions are highly scalable rapid manufacturing methods suitable to automated manufacturing processes. The effects of residual surfactant and water from LPE on thin films for interlaminar prepreg composite enhancement remain unknown. This work investigates the effect of heat treatment on graphene thin films spray deposited onto carbon fibre/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites for reduced void content. Graphene thin films deposited onto CF/PEEK prepreg tapes had an RMS roughness of 1.99 μm and an average contact angle of 11°. After heat treatment the roughness increased to 2.52 μm with an average contact angle of 82°. The SEM images, contact angle, and surface roughness measurements correlated suggesting successful removal of excess surfactant and moisture with heat treatment. Raman spectroscopy was used to characterise the chemical quality of the consolidated graphene interlayer. Spectral data concluded the graphene was 3–4 layered with predominantly edge defects suggesting high quality graphene suitable for electrical enhancement. Conductive-AFM measurements observed an increase in conductive network density in the interlaminar region after the removal of surfactant from the thin film. Heat treatment of the Control sample successfully reduced void content from 4.2 vol% to 0.4 vol%, resulting in a 149% increase in compressive shear strength. Comparatively, heat treatment of graphene enhanced samples (~ 1 wt%) reduced void content from 5.1 vol% to 2.8 vol%. Although a 25% reduction in shear strength was measured, the improved electrical conductivity of the interlaminar region extends the potential applications of fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites. The heat treatment process proves effective in reducing surfactant and thus void content while improving electrical conductivity of the interlayer in a scalable manner. Further investigations into graphene loading effects on conductive enhancement, and void formation is needed.

Abstract

Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has substantial heritability, in part shared with fronto-temporal dementia (FTD). We show that ALS heritability is enriched in splicing variants and in binding sites of 6 RNA-binding proteins including TDP-43 and FUS. A transcriptome wide association study (TWAS) identified 6 loci associated with ALS, including in NUP50 encoding for the nucleopore basket protein NUP50. Independently, rare variants in NUP50 were associated with ALS risk (P = 3.71.10−03; odds ratio = 3.29; 95%CI, 1.37 to 7.87) in a cohort of 9,390 ALS/FTD patients and 4,594 controls. Cells from one patient carrying a NUP50 frameshift mutation displayed a decreased level of NUP50. Loss of NUP50 leads to death of cultured neurons, and motor defects in Drosophila and zebrafish. Thus, our study identifies alterations in splicing in neurons as critical in ALS and provides genetic evidence linking nuclear pore defects to ALS.

Abstract Background Social relationship coping efficacy (SRCE) represents the ability to maintain or enhance social relationships in the context of serious illness. The purpose of the current study was to confirm the factor structure, psychometric properties, and utility of the Italian version of the SRCE scale. Methods 181 breast cancer patients completed the SRCE-Italian (SRCE-I), the Cancer Behavior Inventory–Brief/Italian (CBI–B/I), quality of life (QOL) measures (EORTC QLQ-C30; EORTC QLQ-BR23), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results The SRCE-I was internally consistent (Cronbach alpha = .95) and factor analysis confirmed that the SRCE-I was a unidimensional construct. In terms of validity, the SRCE-I was correlated with QOL (EORTC QLQ-30, Social Functioning, r = .33, Emotional Functioning, r = .57, and Global Health/Quality of Life; r = .54) and scales of the EORTC QLQ-BR23 (e.g., Future Perspective, r = .38; Breast Symptoms, −.31). Abstract

It is well known that the linear stability of solutions of partial differential equations which are integrable can be very efficiently investigated by means of spectral methods. We present here a direct construction of the eigenmodes of the linearized equation by using only their associated Lax pair with no reference to spectral data and boundary conditions. This local construction is given in the general $N \times N$ matrix scheme so as to be applicable to a large class of integrable equations, including the multicomponent nonlinear Schroedinger system and the multi-wave resonant interaction system. The analytical and numerical computations involved in this general approach are detailed as an example for $N = 3$ for the particular system of two coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations in the defocusing, focusing and mixed regimes. The instabilities of the continuous wave solutions are fully discussed in the entire parameter space of their amplitudes and wave numbers. By defining and computing the spectrum in the complex plane of the spectral variable, the eigenfrequencies are explicitly expressed. According to their topological properties, the complete classification of these spectra in the parameter space is presented and graphically displayed. Abstract

This article investigates the level and dynamics of heterogeneity in parental childcare time using data from the Multinational Time Use Study across 20 countries over five decades. Applying the Gini coefficient as the main summary measure of the dispersion in the distribution at the country level, we show that heterogeneity in paternal time has been higher than that in maternal time throughout the last half-century. The gap has narrowed over the last decade, mainly due to a reduction in paternal time heterogeneity. This pattern is observed not only across countries over time but also within those countries for which we have repeated observations. We also show relevant socio-economic variations. Heterogeneity among low-educated mothers started to be systematically above that of high-educated mothers in the 1970s. In the group of fathers, heterogeneity has always been higher for the low-educated and it has been on the rise in the last decade. Results of a counterfactual analysis suggest that the main driver of the trends in paternal timne heterogeneity is the reduction in the share of fathers who do not provide any childcare, especially among the low-educated. Abstract Background The Caregiver Inventory (CGI), a measure of self-efficacy for caregiving that takes into account aspects of caregiving that are neglected by current measures of caregiving, was translated into Italian and validated. Methods Ninety-one caregivers from a variety of locations in Italy completed the CGI-Italian (CGI-I) as well as the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Family Strain Questionnaire - Short Form (FSQ-SF). Results A confirmatory factor analysis based on the original CGI factor structure resulted in an adequate fit of the CGI-I using standard fit indices. Thus, the original factor structure was validated in the CGI-I: Managing Medical Information (α = 0.87), Caring for Care Recipient (α = 0.68), Caring for Oneself (α = 0.78), and Managing Difficult Interactions/Emotions (α = 0.55). Abstract

The non-topological, stationary and propagating, soliton solutions of the classical continuous Heisenberg ferromagnet equation are investigated. A general, rigorous formulation of the Inverse Scattering Transform for this equation is presented, under less restrictive conditions than the Schwartz class hypotheses and naturally incorporating the non-topological character of the solutions. Such formulation is based on a new triangular representation for the Jost solutions, which in turn allows an immediate computation of the asymptotic behaviour of the scattering data for large values of the spectral parameter, consistently improving on the existing theory. A new, general, explicit multi-soliton solution formula, amenable to computer algebra, is obtained by means of the matrix triplet method, producing all the soliton solutions (including breather-like and multipoles), and allowing their classification and description.

43. Oncogenic high-risk human papillomavirus detection and evaluation of risk factors in the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia I

Abstract

Introduction: The cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade I (CIN I) shows an important percentual of spontaneous regression (80%) and there is no universal consensus if these lesions should be treated or only monitored. Lesions at risk for progression are precisely those associated with high-risk HPV. Knowing which CIN I are related to these viruses may be one of the determining factors for the decision to treat or not. Objective: To determine the prevalence of high-risk HPV in women with CIN I and to evaluate if there is an association between the presence of the virus and some risk factors. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. We evaluated 55 women with histological diagnosis of CIN I. All of them were previously submitted to HPV-DNA testing. Results: 25 out of 55 (45.5%) women analyzed were positive for high-risk HPV. The virus infection was related with higher level of education, smoking and history of sexually transmitted diseases. Other risk factors like age, number of sexual partners, age at first sexual intercourse, use of hormonal contraceptives, and immunosuppression condition did not show a relation to the high-risk HPV infection. Conclusions: The prevalence of high-risk HPV in women with histological diagnosis of CIN I was 45.5%. HPV-DNA detection was associated with smoking, history of sexually transmitted diseases, and higher level of education.
