This article traces Jonathan Swift's legacy in the work of three modern Irish poets: Jessica Traynor, Rita Ann Higgins and Derek Mahon. I use two motifs to explore this inheritance: institutions and shadows. Using the work of Genevieve Lloyd, I argue that meaningful engagement with Enlightenment's legacy must recognise its moral ambiguity and emotional complexity through the metaphor of shadow. Institutions, whether in the case of St Patrick's Hospital, Dublin (Ireland's first psychiatric hospital, founded by Swift), the residential institutions of the twentieth century or the modern apparatus of Direct Provision, embody a continuing legacy of suffering, control and containment. Imagination and empathy are the difficult but necessary means through which these legacies must be acknowledged and confronted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Destructiveness: a 'neglected child' in the theory of analytical psychology.

- Abstract
C.G. Jung postulates the child motif as the central symbol of the unfolding self towards wholeness. From the 'abandoned child' and the 'invincibility of the child', Jung derives the 'divine child' as hero. It is about the victory of consciousness over the unconscious, about the 'overcoming of the darkness monster'. But in this ego-psychological approach, there is no 'evil', no destructive child. The author is surprised that there is no concept of destructiveness per se, in the Kantian sense, in either psychoanalysis or analytical psychology. In Jung, 'evil' exists as a shadow dynamic that needs to be integrated. This paper is about destructiveness that cannot be integrated. The author's hypothesis is that some patients have the unconscious belief that they are a discarded child and were born as a 'bad' destructive child or have acquired this unconscious belief in the course of their development. Both possibilities are explored with regard to their treatability using clinical vignettes from the therapy of a child, an adolescent and an adult patient. With regard to collective destructiveness, an attempt is also made to highlight some characteristic beliefs of increasingly radicalized political and social groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The general subject of this analysis is the presence of myths on social media, a heritage of the previous century’s mass culture, and in particular, for social movements. Social movements within networked communication are particularly endowed with mythologies, which draw on mass culture and on societies’ archetypal and psychological backgrounds. This fact justifies the hypothesis that the most effective and popular social movements resort to deeper mythological forms. The specific objective is to describe concrete myths in the language of digital social movements and to review the aspects of mythology in the scholarly literature on mythology from four fields. After tracing contents and impact, a qualitative analysis, focused on two examples justified by their digital origin, is performed: the “Anonymous” movement and “Je Suis Charlie” social mobilisation. Results show the persistence of two mythological motives: the profound hero’s monomyth, playing an essential identifying role, channelled through social networks, with hashtags as slogans, and the related myth of the shadow, the dark, “Anonymous” and hybrid identity. Connections and analogies with other recent examples are discussed −such as the “Me Too” and “Black Lives Matter” cases−. The conclusion is the clear connection between these two myths and the communicative strength of social movements transmitted through social networks., Fondo Social Europeo, Comunidad de Madrid, Depto. de Periodismo y Nuevos Medios, Fac. de Ciencias de la Información, TRUE, pub

Seria a sombra e o riso fenômenos opostos?

- Abstract
This paper aims to understand the origins of what is seen as a lack of understanding about the seriousness of our current times. The author's view is that this failure is due to a lack of awareness that our human species is destructive, arrogant, self-centred and ignorant of the laws of nature and the wonderful complexity of the environment that it destroys. Possible new values that could support a new civilizational framework are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In addressing geography's neglect of shade and shadow, this paper explores how the dynamic play of shadow and light constitutes an integral part of everyday affective and sensory attunement to place and guides pedestrian movement. First, we identify how particular shadows are shaped by distinctive kinds of solar radiance, material forms, human visual perception and cultural representations. We then consider the different cultural ways in which shade and shadow have been interpreted across space and time and identify diverse shadowy effects in different geographical contexts. Thereafter, we focus on particular key elements of central Melbourne's shadow aesthetics, discuss how patterns of shade guide urban choreographies, and explore how architects have imaginatively manipulated shadow. The leaf of the jaborandi (Pilocarpus microphyllus) is the part of the plant of economic interest, from which the pilocarpine is extracted, therefore, leaf production is the main variable that determines the productivity of this species. Pilocarpus leaf production can be managed during its development phase. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate branch regeneration of jaborandi submitted to two types of cutting/pruning and different cropping systems. Prunings were carried out in jaborandi plants from different accessions from the Janorandi Active Germoplasm Bank (BGA), that were under different cropping systems, full sun and shade. With pruning shears, cuts were made 10 and 20 cm from the branch bifurcations. The results showed that regardless of the distances of the cuts in the jaborandi plants, the prunings benefited new shoots production and the harvest and influence on leaf production could be anticipated without harming the plant's development. The drastic pruning performed on the species also stimulated efficient regeneration without damaging the plant, resulting in bigger leaf production, regardless of the pruning direction. It was also observed that jaborandi cultivation becomes more productive when it is grown under full sun regardless of the germplasm used, and the leaves can be harvested in all the months of the year. George Floyd's death, the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change are on a continuum from the immediate shock of viewing a video-recorded murder, to millions dying worldwide from disease, to deaths related to climate change accumulating over a millennium. They participate in the powerful archetypes of death and inequality. 'Increase', Hexagram 42 in the I Ching, archetypically addresses inequalities at all levels - racial, economic, political and the profound imbalance between humans and the environment. Floyd's death highlights the consequences of systemic racism and income inequalities. The pandemic as 'nature's revenge' hits minority populations harder due to underlying health conditions resulting from poverty and greater exposure to the virus in the workplace. President Trump as Trickster showed Americans their shadow and his response to the pandemic amplified its severity. The pandemic has shocked our social, political and economic systems and paused our species rush into environmental disasters at many levels. The disruptions present opportunities for reflection, experimentation and developing new systems as old forms are challenged. The ecological dimensions of Jung's concepts emphasize interconnectedness at all levels and the paradigm shift he called a 'new age' provides a framework for altering the course of the Anthropocene Era. ABSTRACT: We experimentally reproduced star grass (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis cv. “Florico”) poisoning in cattle. Star grass was planted in four shaded (1, 2, 3, and 4) and three sunny paddocks (5, 6, and 7) and were fertilized with the equivalent of 0, 750, 200, or 100 kg/ha urea. Fresh plant leaves were collected from each paddock and fed to 8 calves aged 5 months to 1 year at 10g/kg live weight. Clinical examinations were performed pre- and post-feeding. Fresh leaves were also subjected to sodium picrate paper and diphenylamine tests to evaluate hydrocyanic acid and nitrate concentration, respectively. Clinical signs of poisoning by the star grass cv. “Florico” in cattle were observed 5-15 minutes after ingestion; these included wobbling, muscle tremors, frequent and/or dripping urination, tachycardia, ruminal atony, depression, red ocular mucous membranes, and bright red venous blood. Three animals became severely ill, 4 manifested mild to moderate clinical signs, and 1 did not become ill. The 3 severely ill bovines received a thiosulfate and sodium nitrite solution at a dose of 40ml/100 kg live weight, intravenously (IV). Florico star grass poisoned bovines and the reaction to the sodium picrate paper and diphenylamine tests was more significant for samples cultivated in the shade and with high nitrogen fertilization. Florico grass utilization should be avoided in a silvopastoral system.

This essay explores the nature of light in terms of personal experience, but also its emotional, poetic, and philosophical implications. Even when Plato is not quoted, the myth of the cave is implicitly discussed, in terms of the meaning of light as that which literally illuminates and creates belonging and, at the same time, also produces shadows, which are not —in this essay— the pale reflection of reality, but rather the unique and ephemeral traces of a true exercise of memory.

The shadows represent Cultural Affairs, economic development and politics of everyday life. In the city of Macapá (BR) and here in town (MZ), the equinoxes and solstices, symbolize overlapping shadows, as well as the changes of seasons that subsidize festivities for these events. The shadows are often construed as dark places that relate to dark, understood as places of fear, awkwardness, strangeness, scary and little reveal their potential in everyday life. The article seeks to bring the shadow and category and his contributions in different spheres of socio-cultural, economic and political life. The case study was based on the residents of the village of Here in the District of Massinga on Mozambique (MZ) and the city of Macapá in the State of Amapá in Brazil (BR). The survey results show that the shadows are used by residents of the village of Here for agriculture in the production of plant varieties low photoperiodism, in the hunt for the identification of shelters/animal hideouts, fishing to locate shoals of fish determination of distances from in the shadows along the route, and the azimuth direction path walking trails, production of annual calendars based on natural cycles of shadows, in the creation of oviparous to select the number of males or females, being that the eggs in shadows will lead males, preparation of annual calendar, among others. Already in Macapá, the shadows are used in the ventilation of rooms between infrastructure, shading sidewalks and public squares in animal production are used to improve the quality of meat and in education are inserted into the syllabus of Geography education under nickname of equinoxes.

This personal account charts the changing relationship to a Jungian identity arising from the interrelated processes of understanding the roots of the colonial and racial ideologies that underpin Jung's thinking, and a developing awareness of what it means to be a white person in a system of racism that maintains white supremacy. This is illustrated with reference to the image of a black man appearing in the dream of the white author and with use of post-Jungian thinking to critique the notion of an objective, non-racial psyche. The so-called 'crisis in masculinity' in the post-industrial/post-feminist world is not a new idea but in recent years it does seem to have forced its way back onto the agenda due to a lack of traditional employment, such as coal mining, thus robbing generations of men of their cultural identities. This collective 'crisis' has emerged through media attention on a succession of well-known men in the arts and sports worlds such as Bruce Springsteen, Stormzy, Professor Green and Rio Ferdinand, who share in common a strong sense of masculine identification. In addition, all have openly discussed the healing and relief experienced by embracing the vulnerable, emotional aspects of themselves, or what has been historically characterized as the anima archetype in Jungian psychology. This essay will recount some of their stories of struggle as they have bravely spoken up about their mental health issues, perhaps diminishing, by example, the erroneous notion of depression as a 'woman's problem'. As noted, in recent times we have witnessed a proliferation of famous men speaking out about their emotional difficulties, often in the context of loss and depression, thus providing potential role-modelling for a more expanded view of contemporary masculinity. This paper attempts to consider the tendency amongst a particular type of modern man who is both traditionally macho and simultaneously emotionally articulate with the capacity to open up about the experiences of their inner worlds and the environmental pressures they face in a fast-paced and ever-changing world. Beginning with some brief stories about the men listed above, the primary focus will be on the work of the UK cross-dressing artist and Turner Prize winner (2003) Grayson Perry (b. 1960), by studying his unusual and highly creative clarion call to challenge modern men to recalibrate their emotional behaviour and to speak openly about loss and emotional difficulty. As readers will see, he has developed a unique method that includes filmed, televised interactional interviews with various individuals and groups and he then produces art pieces that embody what has transpired through his engagement with their suffering and real-life dilemmas. This highly creative process offers a double or even triple containment for those struggling with all-too-human pain via the holding interview with him directly; the artwork that he creates as a result; and then through the recording on film that is shared with television audiences who are deeply affected by what they witness and who perhaps find a form of healing via identification. Native grasslands have the ability to adapt to different levels of shade, an important feature that needs to be investigated since silvopastoral systems provide many ecosystem services and productive benefits. To analyze the effect of artificial shade on a natural grassland in the northeastern area of Uruguay, the accumulated herbage mass production, its seasonal distribution and botanical composition (i.e., functional groups) were evaluated. An experiment with a randomised complete block design with four replications was conducted for three years (from March 2019 to April 2022). The treatments were: native grassland (CN) in full sun, CN with 35% solar radiation interception (IRS), CN with 50% IRS, CN with 65% IRS, and CN with 80% IRS. The botanical composition in summer and autumn were similar throughout the years, and a summer perennial grasses domination was found which was independent of the level of solar radiation interception. In winter and spring, the botanical composition evolved towards a greater presence of winter perennial grasses, winter annual grasses, and Cyperaceae+Juncaceae+Liliaceae at the highest shade levels. Higher levels of solar radiation interception increased the production of the native grassland.

Ruminants vary their walking trajectory according to the positioning of the trees in integrated systems, which can determine the concentration of dung deposition at certain locations. The aim of this study was to map the distribution of feces and the behavior of dairy heifers in sunny and shaded areas. This experiment was carried out in Mato Grosso, Brazil, where the main grazing conditioner is shade due to the presence of trees in the pastures. Shading levels used were: full sunlight (control), moderate shade (338 trees ha-1) and intensive shade (714 trees ha-1) in randomized complete blocks. The experimental period was divided into three evaluation periods based on rainfall distribution: rainy period = December 2012; transition period = March 2013 and dry period = June 2013. Animal behavior assessments and dung distribution mapping were performed. The full sunlight system displayed a higher concentration of feces patches at sites near the gate, cow drinkers and fences opposite the gate. Heifers picked shaded places for ruminating and idleness. The major concentration was reported in the central area and under trees, in shaded systems. There were places with greater feces concentrations, but when the pasture had trees, deposition did not only happen underneath trees but also in places under their influence. The distribution was more homogeneous when trees were present in large quantities. The shaded area available in pastures affects spatial distribution of dung, stimulating uniformity. - Abstract
The natural dynamic of the rainforest generates changes in the canopy coverage and, consequently, in the quality and quantity of light that reaches the understory. Similar effects can be achieved by the anthropogenic selective extraction of trees. The microsites produced by the disturbances represent a continuum of environmental conditions that ensures the coexistence of many species. The knowledge of the requirements of the species and the evaluation of the optimal microenvironments to plant growth are useful to build tools to restore degraded areas. We worked in a native rainforest in San Antonio, Misiones, Argentina, focused in a species that has high timber and ecological value: Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart. (cancharana). The aim was to evaluate the establishment of cancharana under different coverage conditions. Two experiments were carried out: a pot experiment in which survivor and growth under two extreme natural coverage were evaluated, and a field experiment in which cancharana was planted in a gradient of coverage produced by natural gaps. In both experiments, more than 90% of the cancharana plants were initially established in a wide gradient of coverage. In the pot experiment, plants without forest coverage (full sun) were damaged by the frost in winter. Four years after the plantation, 70% of the plants survived in the field experiment and mortality was observed mostly in microenvironments with lower light incidence. We conclude that cancharana can establish and survive in many microenvironmental conditions within the rainforest, it acclimates in few months to sudden changes in coverage and, one year after planting, its growth arises with higher availability of light. The species tolerates sudden changes in coverage, therefore the remove of the understory or gap opening stimulate cancharana growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
