FeNdB magnets are one of the important secondary resources containing rare earth elements (REEs). The REEs present in FeNdB magnets can be separated from other metals by double salt precipitation. In order to recover pure Nd(III) solution from the double salts, separation experiments were done with the leaching solutions of the double salts containing Ce(III), Nd(III), and Pr(III). The REEs present in the double salts were completely dissolved using 0.5 M HCl solution at room temperature. First, Ce(III) was separated by oxidative precipitation of CeO2 and Ce(OH)4 by using NaClO and NaOH as an oxidizing and neutralizing agent. Complete separation of Ce(III) from the leaching solution of the double salts was possible by controlling solution pH at 5 under the following conditions: 11 for the molar ratio of NaClO/Ce(III) and 400 rpm at 40°C for 60 min. Second, all the Nd(III) and Pr(III) ions present in the filtrate were completely extracted by using saponified D2EHPA. Third, four stages of cross-current scrubbing of the loaded D2EHPA with pure Nd(III) solution removed most of the Pr(III) from the loaded D2EHPA. Finally, pure Nd(III) solution was obtained by stripping the scrubbed D2EHPA with weak HCl solution. The optimum conditions for the extraction, scrubbing, and stripping were obtained. A new hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent was designed by combining menthol and salicylaldoxime. The mixture has low temperature of glass transition and, additionally, structural reorganization with abnormally long lifetime. Wet etching of Silicon nitride (Si3N4) by phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is one of the key steps in the semiconductor fabrication process, especially for three‐dimensional integrated circuits (ICs). Unfortunately, few systematic studies of phosphoric acid etching of Silicon nitride are available. Summarizing how various factors affect etching and determining the reaction mechanism behind the etching process will help further optimize the etching process. In this work, how the boiling point of hydrous phosphoric acid solutions depends on phosphoric acid concentration is firstly investigated. Next, the etching of over 100 samples of Silicon nitride by H3PO4 at different concentrations and temperatures is systematically studied. The results show that the etching rate increases nearly linearly in both temperature and H3PO4 concentration, while temperature play more important role as compared to concentration. For each concentration, the reaction rate is maximal at the boiling point of the hydrous H3PO4 solution. Moreover, the etching rate of 85 wt % phosphoric acid is analyzed using the Arrhenius equation, yielding an apparent activation energy Ea=57.28 KJ/mol. Finally, a mechanism of Silicon nitride etching in phosphoric acid is proposed which explains the prior studies well. Binary terpenoid-based eutectic systems consisting of the natural substances camphene (CA), fenchol (FE), thymol (TH), menthol (ME), dodecanoic acid (DA), and 1-dodecanol (DO) are synthesized and screened for their Solid–Liquid Equilibrium (SLE) and eutectic compositions. Out of nine eutectic systems, 13 solvent compositions at eutectic points and next to them, in addition to the reference solvent, TH:ME, are synthesized and applied for the solvent extraction of the aromatic aldehydes vanillin (VAN), syringaldehyde (SYR), and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (HYD) from an acidic aqueous model solution. The extraction efficiency is determined from aldehyde concentrations measured by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), taking into consideration mutual solubility measured by Karl Fischer titration (KF) and a Total Organic Carbon-analysis (TOC). Physicochemical properties, such as the density, viscosity, and stability of the solvents, are evaluated and discussed. Additionally, 1H-NMR measurements are performed to verify hydrogen bonding present in some of the solvents. The results show that all synthesized eutectic systems have a strong hydrophobic character with a maximum water saturation of ≤2.21 vol.% and solvent losses of ≤0.12 vol.% per extraction step. The hydrophobic eutectic solvents based on CA exhibit lower viscosities, lower mutual solubility, and lower extraction efficiency for the aromatic aldehydes when compared with FE-based solvents. The highest extraction efficiencies for VAN (>95%) and for SYR (>93%) at an extraction efficiency of 92.61% for HYD are achieved by the reference solvent TH:ME (50:50 mol.%). With an extraction efficiency of 93.08%, HYD is most preferably extracted by the FE–DO-solvent (80:20 mol.%), where the extraction efficiencies for VAN and SYR reach their maximum at 93.37% and 90.75%, respectively. The drawbacks of the high viscosities of 34.741 mPas of the TH:ME solvent and 31.801 mPas of the FE–DO solvent can be overcome by the CA–TH solvent, which has a viscosity of 3.436 mPas, while exhibiting extraction efficiencies of 71.92% for HYD, >95% for VAN, and >93% for SYR, respectively. In the present study, bioactive compounds, including chlorophyll a and c1 + c2, carotenoids, fucoxanthin, and total phenols, were extracted from Dictyota ceylanica and Dictyota cervicornis using various solvents to evaluate their in vitro antioxidant activities. Species-specific and solvent-specific differences (p < 0.05) were observed for those compounds. D. ceylanica yielded high chlorophyll a (2.083 mg/g) and carotenoids (0.672 mg/g) in acetone, whereas D. cervicornis showed a maximum of chlorophyll c1 + c2 (1.134 mg/g) and fucoxanthin (0.803 mg/g) in dimethyl sulfoxide. D. cervicornis was found to have a significant amount of total phenols (583.46 mg GAE/100 g), DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging activity (39.85%), ferric reducing antioxidant power activity (472.81 mg TE/100 g), and total antioxidant activity (1037.52 mg AAE/100 g) in the water extract. The Pearson's correlation and R2 value revealed that chlorophyll a, chlorophyll c1 + c2, carotenoids, fucoxanthin, and total phenols are highly responsible for the remarkable antioxidant activities in D. ceylanica and D. cervicornis. Deep Eutectic Liquids (DELs) fall among the rapidly evolving discoveries of the 21st century, and these liquids are considered as alternative solvents to toxic and volatile organic liquids. Nevertheless, the emerging trend regarding the use of DELs in every field of physical and biological sciences, a lot of ambiguities and misconceptions exist about their formation, mechanism, and efficiencies observed or projected. A review of available technical data makes it obvious that these liquids have the potential to revolutionize the underdeveloped areas of analytical chemistry particularly the extraction/enrichment of analytes. To ensure the green and sustainable use of DELs, the researchers need to have a thorough understanding of DELs, their classification, chemistry, the nature and strength of molecular entanglements, and their tailorable features. Many researchers have declared these liquids recyclable but more attentive trials are needed to develop an authentic and straightforward DELs recycling methodology. Anthocyanins (ANCs), a kind of natural pigments, are widely present in food substrates. Evidence has shown that ANCs can promote health in terms of anti-oxidation, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammation. However, the oxidative stability of ANCs limits accurate quantitation and analysis. Therefore, faster, more accurate, and highly sensitive extraction and determination methods are necessary for understanding the role of ANCs in medicine and food. This review presents an updated overview of pretreatment and detection techniques for ANCs in various food substrates since 2015. Liquid-liquid extraction and various green solvent extraction methods, such as accelerated solvents extraction, deep eutectic solvents extraction, ionic liquids extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction, are commonly used pretreatment methods for extraction and purification of ANCs. Liquid chromatography coupled with different detectors (tandem mass spectrometry and UV detectors) and spectrophotometry methods are some of the determination methods for ANC. This study has updated, compared, and discussed different pretreatment and analysis methods. This review article describes some of the recent advances in ultra‐trace determination of uranium in various natural water bodies such as drinking water, underground water, seawater, etc. using total reflection x‐ray florescence (TXRF) spectrometry. Uranium is one of the most hazardous element having chemical as well as radio‐toxicity. However, due to its low concentration in water samples, direct determination is seldom possible in samples with high salt content. Various sample preconcentration and selective extraction techniques for uranium such as solvent extraction, dispersive liquid–liquid micro extraction, solid phase extraction, and membrane based preconcentration methods are summarized in this article. TXRF is a very versatile micro‐analytical technique with detection limits in picogram range and having multielemental analysis capability. TXRF determination of uranium using U Lα as the analytical line has many analytical challenges and difficulties, mainly due to the severe interference with Rb and Br, both are commonly available in natural water samples. This article highlights some of these challenges, along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different sample preparation techniques used so far for uranium determination in natural water samples by TXRF. Solvent extraction using a microfluidic platform is one of the process intensification tools. It may involve different two-phase flow regimes that have different physical and mass transfer characteristics. Therefore, this study focuses on the selection of a better flow regime, flow conditions and cascade configuration (cross or counter-current) using mathematical modeling for a typical high-throughput application (1000 L/day). The mathematical model is based on a plug flow model. The liquid–liquid system considered is a water–acetone–toluene system. The different flow regimes such as slug flow (SF), slug-droplet flow (SDF) and core-annular flow (CAF) in different cascade configurations are compared on the basis of parameters like specific extraction rate (SER), solvent extraction process effectiveness (SEPE) and modified merit index (MMI). Among the different flow regimes and cases studied, CAF is found to offer lesser parallel paths, total extraction length, total pressure drop and residence time. The best case of CAF has higher SER (3.6 times), SEPE (3.6 times) and MMI (21.8 times) than the best case of SF in both cascades. SDF shows the results between SF and CAF. For a specific flow regime, higher values of parameters are obtained at higher flow rates. Counter-current cascade is found to be better than cross-current cascade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of density functional theory (DFT) has significantly enhanced the use of computational chemistry as a tool in the design and development of ligands for the separation of actinides (An) and lanthanides (Ln) in the nuclear waste management. In the past, identifying new ligands involved either making incremental structural changes to existing ligands or conducting extensive laboratory testing of numerous compounds. However, these experimental methods are often costly and time-consuming. With the advancements in hardware and software, theoretical and computational chemistry has become a powerful and cost-effective approach in nuclear waste management research. The density functional theory (DFT), in particular, has played a pivotal role by enabling scientists to accurately predict the effectiveness of ligands based on electronic and molecular properties, as well as reactivity indices. This computational approach provides valuable insights into the separation efficiencies of ligands without the need for extensive experimental efforts. This review highlights the role of computational chemistry in the design of ligands for the separation of lanthanides and actinides in spent nuclear fuel processing. It discusses various design strategies and computational analyses used in ligand optimization, highlighting the potential applications of computational tools in guiding ligand design and improving separation processes. The work emphasizes the synergy between computational insights and experimental observations in lanthanide/actinide chemistry, which enhances understanding of complex phenomena and aids in the interpretation of experimental results. It also explores different design approaches that allow for fine-tuning of ligand properties and selectivity toward specific metal ions, ultimately improving separation efficiency. In this review, we will discuss some widely used computational tools in chemistry without delving into complex mathematical formulas. This will be particularly helpful for researchers who come from an experimental background and may not be as familiar with advanced mathematical concepts. The tools covered are bond order analysis, population analysis, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis, Energy Decomposition Analysis (EDA), and thermodynamic analysis. These methods are explored in a more accessible manner for non-theoretical researchers. They provide valuable insights into bonding, binding, stability, non-bonding interactions, coordinating abilities and selectivity of organic ligands in extraction of actinides and lanthanides, thus providing useful information in the designing of ligands to enhance separation strategies. This review serves as an excellent resource for future ligand design, offering valuable insights into computational techniques used to understand the coordination and complexation behaviors of ligands. Ionic liquid (IL) assisted liquid–liquid-extraction (LLE) has been emerged as fascinating pathway to extract gallium (Ga(III)) from electronic waste. The computational investigation of LLE invokes the UNIQUAC model with extended Pitzer–Debye–Hückel (PDH*) framework to accommodate long range interactions due to the presence of ions. The combination of quantum chemical calculation and global optimization technique have been incorporated to estimate the model parameters. Herein, phosphonium and ammonium-based ILs having 26 tie-lines are used for sole Ga(III) extraction and 14 tie-lines for co-extraction. The sole Ga(III) extraction exhibits deviation between 0.5 and 0.8%, and co-extraction ranges from 0.85 to 1.5% and thus highlights the goodness of estimation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research analysis reveals factors influencing third-phase crud formation and composition during metal extraction, including solution composition, solid suspensions, organic compounds, colloidal compounds (e.g., silicic acid), and extractant purity. Compositional analysis of copper-containing sulfuric acid solutions (1.25 g/dm3 copper) identifies principal sulfate-forming components. Copper extraction was studied using extractants LIX 984N, ACORGA M5774, and M5640 at different ratios of the organic phase to the aqueous O:A (from 1:2 to 1:10). Suppressive impact of 10 vol.% CR60 additive on third-phase crud formation during copper extraction with LIX 984N, ACORGA M5774, and M5640 is analyzed, with ACORGA M5774 being the most effective. Physicochemical analysis characterizes CR60's active substance as poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) with steel-suppression properties, and its structural formula is determined. Optimal copper extraction conditions establish ACORGA M5640's 24% efficiency, followed by ACORGA M5774 at 15%. CR60 reduces crud formation, with 5 cm3 of ACORGA CR60 added to sulfuric acid solution reducing interfacial crud formation by 2–3 times. Optimal extraction parameters include 1:2 O:A ratio, 20 ± 5 °C temperature, 5 cm3 CR60 additive, 5 min process duration, and 1-day settling time. BACKGROUND: Tangerine peel is rich in flavonoids, particularly hesperidin, which has anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer biological activities. However, it is often wasted during citrus processing. The current common extraction method for hesperidin is solvent extraction, which has the characteristics of low extraction rate and high contamination. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pulsed electric field‐assisted alkali dissolution extraction, followed by an acidification precipitation method, on the extraction rate and structure of hesperidin from tangerine peel. RESULTS: The results showed that the selected factors (material/liquid ratio, electric field intensity and pulse number) had a significant effect on the extraction yield. An optimum condition of 66.00 mL g−1, 4.00 kV cm−1 and 35.00 pulses gave the maximum amount (669.38 μg mL−1), which was consistent with the theoretically predicted value by software (672.10 μg mL−1), indicating that the extraction process was feasible. In addition, the purified extract was further identified as hesperidin from UV and NMR spectra. CONCLUSION: An appropriate strength of pulsed electric field‐assisted alkali dissolution extraction followed by an acidification precipitation method can effectively improve the extraction rate of orange peel, and the purity of the extracted orange peel is higher. Compared with the traditional extraction, the pulsed electric field‐assisted extraction method may be a potential technology for hesperidin extraction, which is beneficial for the high‐value utilization of citrus resources. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. The selection of appropriate solvents in the extraction process plays a crucial role in determining the nature and quantity of secondary metabolites extracted from medicinal plants. This study investigates the impact of solvent polarity on the extraction yield, phenolic content, and antioxidant properties of seeds from four plants belonging to the Malvaceae family: Abutilon fruticosum, Abutilon pannosum, Sida ovata and Malvastrum coromendelianum. The seed powder of each species was subjected to extraction using solvents with varying polarities, including acetone, chloroform, methanol, and water. Physicochemical analysis, extraction yield, quantitative phenolic content, and antioxidant activity were assessed. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent, and antioxidant activity was measured using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that the choice of extracting solvents significantly influenced (p < 0.05) extraction yield, phenolic content, and antioxidant properties. In conclusion, water and methanol emerged as the most effective solvents for achieving high extraction yields, phenolic compound content, and free radical scavenging activities. The results demonstrated a robust correlation between total phenolic content (mg of Gallic acid equivalent/g of sample) and free radical scavenging activity (IC50). The study highlights the substantial impact of solvent type, suggesting the potential benefits of using a combination of polar and nonpolar solvents to enhance the extraction efficiency of phytochemicals, phenolic content and antioxidant quality from medicinal plant seeds. Addition of organic compounds containing O/N heteroatoms to aqueous electrolytes such as ZnSO4 (ZS) solutions is one of the effective strategies to inhibit Zn anode dendrites and side reactions. However, addressing the stability of Zn plating/stripping at high current densities and areal capacities by this method is still a challenge, especially in capacitors known for high power and long life. Herein, an organic heterocyclic compound of 1, 4, 7, 10‐tetraazacyclododecane (TC) containing four symmetrically distributed N atoms is employed as ZS additive, expanding the life of Zn anodes from ≈ 30 h to 1000 and 240 h at deep plating/stripping conditions of 10 and 20 mA cm−2/mAh cm−2, respectively; the cumulative capacity is as high as 5.0 Ah cm−2 with 99% Coulombic efficiency, far exceeding reported additives. TC with higher binding energies than H2O for Zn species tends to adsorb to Zn (002) in a lying manner and participate in the solvation shell of Zn2+, thus avoiding Zn dendrites and side‐reaction damage, especially at high current densities. The TC‐endowed Zn anode's stability under such extreme conditions is verified in Zn‐ion capacitors (i.e., > 94.6% capacity retention after 28 000 cycles), providing new insights into the development of high‐power Zn‐based energy storage devices. The purpose of the present study was to determine the total phenolic, flavonoid, and galegine content and antioxidant activity, as well as the in vitro antidiabetic potential of different extracts of Galega officinalis using the solvent extraction method. The results demonstrated that the highest yield of extraction (28.05%) and galegine content (17.40 ± 0.04 μg/g of sample) was obtained using water as the solvent (p < .05). However, the highest total phenolic content (TPC) (138.35 ± 0.63 mg GAE per gram of dried GOEs) and total flavonoid content (TFC) (189.12 ± 1.47 mg catechin per gram of dried GOEs) were extracted using A90 (acetone–water, 90:10) solvent. A90 extract exhibited the highest inhibition of sucrase activity (91.42%) (p < .05). Also, the inhibitory activity of A90 against α‐amylase (59.96%), α‐glucosidase (54.3%), and maltase (62.73%) was significantly higher than that of A70 (acetone–water, 70:30) and E20 (ethanol–water, 20:80) (p < .05). According to antioxidant activity results, the highest ABTS•+ (360.5 ± 15.69 μmol Trolox eq per gram of dried GOEs), hydroxyl radical‐scavenging activity (3657.75 ± 21.56 μmol histidine eq per gram of dried GOEs), and FRAP assay (558.18 ± 20.26 μmol FeSO4 eq per gram of dried GOEs) were related to A90, while the best DPPH radical‐scavenging activity and metal‐chelating activity were related to A70 (302.66 ± 2.42 μmol Trolox equivalents per gram of dried GOEs) and E20 (36.5 ± 1.02 μmol EDTA eq per gram of dried GOEs), respectively. Green deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are widely used to extract bioactive components from plant biomass; however, hydrophilic DES and bioactive component isolation methods have not been developed. In this study, we synthesized hydrophilic DES (CL‐CA‐DES) using citric acid and choline chloride. We combined this with environmentally friendly anion‐ and cation‐exchange resin column chromatographic isolation methods. This approach extracted and isolated four polyphenolic compounds (catechins, epicatechins, procyanidin B1, and procyanidin B2) from raspberry root and efficiently recovered the hydrophilic DES. CL‐CA‐DES extracted significantly higher contents of catechin and procyanidin B2 from raspberry root compared to other solvents. It also extracted substantially higher contents of epicatechin compared to butyl alcohol, 70% ethanol, and water, but there was no significant difference when compared with acetone and ethyl acetate. Additionally, CL‐CA‐DES extracted significantly higher contents of procyanidin B1 compared to butyl alcohol, water, and ethyl acetate, with no significant difference when compared with 70% ethanol and acetone. The isolation efficiency of the bioactive components in the raspberry root extract by anion‐ and cation‐exchange resin column chromatography was higher than that of the organic solvent extraction and precipitation generation methods, and the method was effective in recovering CL‐CA‐DES with a recovery rate higher than 60%. In conclusion, this study developed a new method for the efficient recovery of hydrophilic CL‐CA‐DES, which can be used for isolating polyphenolic compounds from raspberry root. Solvent extraction of lithium from brine with a high Mg/Li ratio was investigated. Tributyl phosphate (TBP), ferric chloride (FeCl3), and kerosene were used as the extractant, co-extractant, and diluent, respectively. The mechanism of the extraction process was studied by LC–MS, UV–VIS, and FT-IR analyses. Effects of organic to aqueous phase volume ratio (O/A) on the extraction efficiency and separation factor were optimized. The effects of major parameters including Fe/Li molar ratio, hydrochloric acid concentration, and TBP volume percent as well as their interactions on the lithium extraction efficiency were evaluated using central composite design. These major parameters represent interactions within their selected ranges. While the lithium extraction efficiency as the response value in the experimental design showed the most sensitivity to the acid concentration, the separation factors were more affected by alteration in the TBP volume percent with the fixed optimum values of the other major parameters. The highest one-stage extraction efficiency of 76.3% and Li/Mg separation factor of 304 were obtained at the optimum conditions of Fe/Li = 2.99, HCl = 0.01 M, and TBP = 55%. The Mg/Li mass ratio could be significantly reduced from 192 in the feed to 1.5 in the stripping solution. Plant-derived foods with therapeutic potential have strong connection with both the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. The effectiveness of these therapeutic properties is heavily influenced by the thermal treatment during drying and extraction methods. Traditional convective drying is a very energy incentive and lengthy process. Although some advanced and hybrid drying methods have been developed, these have not been applied in drying of banana inflorescence. In this study, we investigated the effects of freeze-drying (FD) and intermittent microwave convective drying (IMCD), as well as traditional convective oven drying (CD), on the polyphenol profile of banana inflorescence when extracted using the energy-efficient Accelerated Solvent Extraction method (ASE). Our findings revealed that the freeze-dried banana inflorescence powder exhibited the highest extraction of bioactive compounds when using 75% methanol at 100 °C as a solvent. It recovered 2906.3 ± 20.83 mg/100 g of the phenolic compounds and 63.12 ± 0.25% antioxidant activity under the optimal extraction conditions. While IMCD was found to be the second-best drying method in terms of preserving bioactive compounds, its operational time and cost were significantly lower compared to freeze-drying. Furthermore, our study confirmed the presence of medicinal compounds such as gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, catechin, ferulic acid, kaempferol, and quercetin in banana inflorescence. Vicia faba L. is a leguminous plant with seeds rich in nutritional compounds, such as polyphenols and L-dopa, a dopamine precursor and first-line treatment for Parkinson's symptoms. Recently, its by-products have been revalued as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds. In this study, aqueous extracts of Lucan broad bean pod valves (BPs) were characterized to evaluate their potential use as adjuvants in severe Parkinson's disease. L-dopa content, quantified by LC-UV, was much higher in BPs than in seeds (28.65 mg/g dw compared to 0.76 mg/g dw). In addition, vicine and convicine, the metabolites responsible for favism, were not detected in pods. LC-ESI/LTQ-Orbitrap/MS2 allowed the identification of the major polyphenolic compounds, including quercetin and catechin equivalents, that could ensure neuroprotection in Parkinson's disease. ESI(±)-FT-ICR MS was used to build 2D van Krevelen diagrams; polyphenolic compounds and carbohydrates were the most representative classes. The neuroprotective activity of the extracts after MPP+-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells was also investigated. BP extracts were more effective than synthetic L-dopa, even at concentrations up to 100 µg/mL, due to the occurrence of antioxidants able to prevent oxidative stress. In recent years, the increasing need for energy conservation and environmental protection has driven industries to explore more efficient and sustainable processes. Liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) is a common method used in various sectors for separating components of liquid mixtures. However, the traditional use of toxic solvents poses significant health and environmental risks, prompting the shift toward green solvents. This review deals with the principles, applications, and advantages of aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) as an alternative to conventional LLE. ATPS, which typically utilize water and nontoxic components, offer significant benefits such as high purity and single-step biomolecule extraction. This paper explores the thermodynamic principles of ATPS, factors influencing enzyme partitioning, and recent advancements in the field. Specific emphasis is placed on the use of ATPS for enzyme extraction, showcasing its potential in improving yields and purity while minimizing environmental impact. The review also highlights the role of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents in enhancing the efficiency of ATPS, making them viable for industrial applications. The discussion extends to the challenges of integrating ATPS into biotransformation processes, including enzyme stability and process optimization. The development of products with skin-protective effects has been driven by the increasing incidence of skin diseases that are exacerbated by increasing pollution, urbanization, poor living, working, fatigue, dietary habits, and general treatment. The ability of antioxidants to protect the skin from oxidative stress and its effects makes them one of the most important ingredients in today's cosmetics. This article aims first to characterize the plant extracts obtained from Acmella oleracea (A. oleracea) and then to evaluate the preliminary criteria for a new marketed product: the stability, antioxidant activity, and in vitro behavior of certain serums based on A. oleracea plant extract and hyaluronic acid. The extracts were obtained by liquid–solid extraction methods (maceration (M), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UEA), and a combined method between these two (UEA + M) using an aqueous solution of ethyl alcohol as the extraction solvent. The determination of the amounts of compounds with antioxidant activity highlighted the fact that the extract obtained from the whole plant of A. oleracea using maceration in conditions of S/L = 1:30, 20 days, and an extraction solvent percentage of 50% led to obtaining the highest amount of polyphenols (30.42 μg GAE/g), while using the combined UAE + M method under conditions of S/L = 1:30, 6 min + 20 days, and 50% extraction solvent led to obtaining the highest amount of flavonoids (32.88 mg QE/g). The tests performed on dermato-cosmetic serums based on the plant extract and multimolecular hyaluronic acid (HA) (1 HA with HMW—1.0 mDa–1.6 mDa; HA with LMW—10 kDa–200 kDa; and HA OLIGO, MW < 10 kDa) led to the conclusion that they exhibit structural stability, good shear behavior revealing a satisfactory texture, and high physical stability during storage. [Display omitted] Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) have emerged as a versatile and multifunctional platform applied in bioimaging, disease treatment, electrocatalysis, and water purification. The synthesis of MPNs with mesoporous frameworks and ultra-small diameters (<200 nm), crucial for post-modification, cargo loading, and mass transport, remains a formidable challenge. Inspired by mussel chemistry, mesoporous metal-phenolic nanospheres (MMPNs) are facilely prepared by direct deposition of the metal-polyphenol complex on the interface of oil nano-droplets composed of block copolymers/1,3,5-trimethylbenzene followed by a spontaneous template-removal process. Due to the penetrable and stable networks, the oil nano-droplets gradually leak from the networks driven by shear stress during the stirring process. As a result, MMPNs are obtained without additional template removal procedures such as solvent extraction or high-temperature calcination. The materials have a large pore size (∼12.1 nm), uniform spherical morphology with a small particle size (∼99 nm), and a large specific surface area (49.8 m2 g−1). Due to the abundant phenolic hydroxyl groups, the MMPNs show excellent antioxidative property. The MMPNs also have excellent photothermal property, whose photothermal conversion efficiency was 40.9 %. Moreover, the phenolic hydroxyl groups can reduce Ag+ in situ to prepare Ag nanoparticles loaded MMPNs composites, which have excellent inhibition performance of drug-resistant bacteria biofilm. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are biologically inspired algorithms designed to simulate the way in which the human brain processes information. In sample preparation for bioanalysis, liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) represents an important step with the extraction solvent selection is the key laborious step. In the current work, a robust and reliable ANNs model for LLE solvent prediction was generated which could predict the suitable solvent for analyte extraction. The developed ANNs model takes a set of chosen descriptors for the cited analyte as an input and predicts the corresponding Hansen solubility parameters of the suitable extraction solvent as a model output. Then, from the solvent combination's appendix, the analyst can identify the proposed extraction solvents' combination for the cited analyte easily and efficiently. For the experimental validation of the model prediction capabilities, twenty structurally diverse drugs belonging to different pharmacological classes were extracted from human plasma. The extraction process was performed using the predicted extraction solvent combination for each drug and quantitively estimated by HPLC/UV methods to assess their extraction recovery. Organophosphates are widely used in the livestock industry. In this study, we developed a method for detecting 27 organophosphate insecticides in animal-derived foods, including beef, pork, chicken, milk, and eggs, using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. A modified QuEChERS method was optimized for sample pretreatment. A mixture of acetonitrile and acetone was used as the extraction solvent, and MgSO4 and NaCl were used as salts. Among the five different dispersive solid-phase extraction systems, MgSO4, primary secondary amines, and C18 were selected for purification because they had the highest recovery rates and least matrix effects. The matrix-dependent limit of quantitation was 0.0005–0.005 mg/kg, and the correlation coefficient of the matrix-matched calibration curve was >0.99, which was acceptable for quantifying residues below 0.01 mg/kg—the default maximum residue limit in a positive list system. The recovery efficiencies ranged from 71.9 to 110.5%, with standard deviations ranging from 0.2% to 12.5%, satisfying the SANTE guidelines. The established analytical method was used to monitor organophosphates in animal-derived foods obtained from a local market, and no pesticides were detected. Exhausted olive pomace (EOP) represents the principal residue of olive pomace. Several studies have optimized the extraction of specialized metabolites from the EOP of Olea europaea L., but a comparison between different extractive methods has not been made. For this reason, the present investigation aims to compare four different extractive methods by using water and 15% ethanol/water as extractive solvents. Specifically, based on extract antioxidant activity, the methods compared were maceration (MAC), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE). Between these, the UAE and ASE hydroalcoholic EOP extracts were demonstrated to have the highest antioxidant activity. Subsequently, these extracts were investigated for their hypoglycemic and antiradical activity using in vitro cell-free and cell-based assays, respectively. ASE hydroalcoholic EOP extract demonstrated the greatest ability to inhibit the α-amylase enzyme and an in vitro antioxidant activity comparable to N-acetyl cysteine in HepG2 cells. UAE and ASE extracts' phytochemical characterization was also performed, identifying seven phenolic compounds, including 3-hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, and, for the first time, salidroside. The ASE hydroalcoholic EOP extract was the richest from a phytochemical point of view, thus confirming its major biological activity. In recent years, the supercritical CO2 extraction method has gained attention due to its use of environmentally friendly, non-toxic solvents, ability to operate at lower temperatures that do not cause the degradation of bioactive compounds, and capacity for rapid extraction. The leaves of Nicotiana glauca (N. glauca; Solanaceae) plant are a known, major human health concern. This study investigated the antioxidant activity and polyphenols composition of aerial parts of N. glauca collected from its wild habitat in Jordan, using Methanol-Conventional (MC) and deep eutectic solvents (DES) extraction methods in addition to nicotine content determination using UHPLC. Our results showed that the MC extract contains fewer total phenols and flavonoid content than the 90% DES extract, (0.1194 ± 0.009 and 0.311 ± 0.020 mg/mL equivalent to gallic acid) and (0.01084 ± 0.005 and 0.928 ± 0.09 mg/mL equivalent to rutin), respectively. Moreover, this study showed that the prepared MC extract contain 635.07 ppm nicotine, while the 90% DES extract contain 1194.91 ppm nicotine. Extracts prepared using the MC and the DES methods exhibited weak antioxidant activities; the highest was a 33% inhibition rate (equivalent to ascorbic acid), obtained by the 90% DES extract,. The performed UHPLC-MS/MS analysis in this study also revealed the presence of variations in the detected compounds between the two extraction methods. Furthermore, this study found that environmentally friendly DES extraction of N. glauca produced higher phenol and flavonoid content than the MC method; this highlights the superior efficiency and environmental benefits of sustainable chemistry methods for extracting valuable phytoconstituents. The aim of this study was to investigate an ultrasound-assisted method for the extraction of bioactive compounds from tomato pomace. This method was based on a simple ultrasound treatment using different solvents (e.g., acetone, ethanol, ethyl acetate) as extraction media. Three different variables were chosen to determine their influence on extraction efficiency, such as solvent/liquid ratio (0.1:25 g/mL, 0.2:25 g/mL, 0.3:25 g/mL), temperature (30 °C, 40 °C, 50 °C), and time (2 h, 6 h, 10 h); the variables were selected through Box–Behnken design experiments. These parameters were optimized to achieve the highest yield, and the results showed that acetone was the best extraction solvent for lycopene (3.36 mg/100 g), total phenolic content (TPC) (31.15 QUE mg/L), and total flavone content (TFC) (66.80 GAE mg/L), while DPPH activity (82.94%) was the highest when ethanol was used as the solvent. Regarding the solvent/liquid ratio, the best results were obtained at a ratio of 0.1:25. Temperature influenced the extraction, with the best results observed at 50 °C for lycopene, DPPH, and polyphenols, while the flavonoids were better extracted at 30 °C. Time played an important role as well, with the best extractions observed at 10 h. Solvent-extracted fractions of six Indian coal samples of different ranks were investigated using multiple geochemical, petrological and spectroscopic proxies and an attempt was made to indicate possible fingerprint regions for different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) with the help of excitation-emission matrix (EEM). In this study, for the very first time, the influence of rank and maturation of organic matter in the characterisation of coal solvent-extracts from Indian coals were perceived from the viewpoint of fluorescence EEM. Vitrinite reflectance (VRo) values were used to determine the general ranks of the original coal samples viz. lignite, subbituminous, bituminous and anthracite. Different fluorescence peak regions corresponding to different fused aromatic ring (FAR) systems were delineated using the EEM and their indicative depositional environments could be inferred. Our observations indicate that solvent-extracted fractions of low rank coals comprise of a larger number of shorter carbon chains compared to the other samples. For the low rank coal samples, the solvent-extracts show a strong humic influence and the presence of smaller PAH rings while for the medium rank coals, the extracted fractions tend to show a more bimodal distribution of PAHs, possibly comprising of different sized PAHs. Higher fluorescence sensitivity and quick response of smaller PAHs impart a singular centralised region in the EEM for the low rank coal samples while interference in the fluorescence of differently sized PAHs indicate a multimodal distribution of the fluorophores in the medium rank coals. The high rank coal used in this study shows a bimodal distribution with very low intensity of the peaks, indicating the low abundance of extractable macromolecules, possibly as a result of deformation. Sertraline is used as an antidepressant drug for the treatment of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression. In the current study, a simple and effective method was developed for the sensitive monitoring of sertraline in water samples using a GC–MS system. The spray-assisted droplet formation liquid-phase microextraction (SADF-LPME) method was used as a sample preparation method for the enrichment of analytes. Accordingly, dichloromethane was used as an extraction solvent and easily dispersed into a sample/standard solution using a lab-made modified spray device without using a dispersing solvent. The significant factors affecting the SADF-LPME efficiency, including sample pH, mixing conditions, extraction solvent type, and spray cycle, were univariately optimized to ascertain the extraction performance and applicability of the system. Under the optimized conditions, the plotted calibration curve of the method was linear in the range of 100.2–2011.7 µg/kg (mass-based standard preparation) with a good correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9997. The detection and quantification limits of method were found to be 37.5 and 125 µg/kg, respectively. Validation of the method was successfully carried out using different tap water samples and applying a matrix-matching calibration strategy. The acceptable percent recoveries were recorded between 77.3 and 133.7%, with high repeatability. The recommended method is an alternative and fast extraction method with several advantages, including a simple experimental process, good dispersibility, and fast and superior extraction performance. Asphaltene, often regarded as an undesirable by‐product of petroleum processing, possesses abundant reserves but limited market value. In this study, a simple and environmentally friendly solvent extraction method is conducted under ambient conditions to convert low‐value asphaltene into high‐value asphaltene‐based fluorescent carbon nanosheets (a‐FCS). This approach yields dual‐switch a‐FCS capable of emitting orange‐red fluorescence in solid‐state or water environment and exhibiting blue‐to‐yellow fluorescence in organic solvents. Moreover, the redshift observed in the fluorescence emission wavelength in the solvent is attributed to its intrinsic self‐assembly behavior, which becomes more pronounced with increasing concentration. Upon introduction to water, hydrophobic interactions induce the aggregation of a‐FCS. This aggregation triggers the orange‐red fluorescence by restricting intramolecular rotation on the surface, a phenomenon facilitated by the entanglement of aliphatic chains from asphaltene molecules. The prevalent use of unsustainable polymers in current X‐ray scintillators poses a significant environmental concern. The advancement of biodegradable X‐ray scintillators holds promise in mitigating escalating environmental issues tied to electronic or medical waste and carbon footprints. Herein, a biodegradable and flexible X‐ray scintillation film is presented employing lead‐free 0D Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite nanoparticles integrated into densified‐delignified wood (Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood). The Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood film demonstrates precise and detailed X‐ray imaging capabilities, achieving a high spatial resolution of 10 line pairs per millimeter (lp·mm−1). To minimize the environmental impact associated with disposal, metal and halide ions (e.g., Cs+, Cu+, I−) from Cs3Cu2I5@D‐Wood can be easily retrieved by a simple solvent extraction process. The approach showcases the potential of biodegradable wood‐based X‐ray scintillation screens as alternatives to conventional, plastic‐based screens. Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Zingeberaceae) is a medicinal plant widely used as food, spice, or flavoring agent worldwide. 6-Shogaol is a compound of prime interest in exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and chemopreventive effects. The objective of the study is to investigate the effect of microwave-assisted drying (MAD) followed by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) so as to produce 6-Shogaol enriched Ginger with improved therapeutic benefits. Various drying techniques viz. shade drying, tray drying, microwave-assisted drying and osmotic dehydration as a pretreatment were used for drying Ginger rhizomes. The dried rhizomes were extracted by conventional solvent extraction and microwave-assisted extraction techniques and tested for content of 6-Shogaol using the newly developed HPLC method whereas total flavonoid and polyphenol content were determined using the UV spectrophotometric method. Subjecting the microwave dried Ginger to microwave-assisted extraction for 45 min at constant power level of 284 W resulted in a significant rise in the extractability of 6-Shogaol (1.660 ± 0.018), total polyphenols (855.46 ± 5.33) and flavonoids (617.97 ± 6.40) compared to the conventional method of extraction. The proposed Ginger processing method of microwave drying followed by microwave extraction outperforms traditional methods in terms of speed, convenience, and performance thus can be scaled up to industrial levels. The molecular structure of coal is complex, and the existing research methods are limited, so it is difficult to clarify its influence mechanism on the spontaneous-combustion characteristics of coal. In this paper, the previous extraction, FTIR, TPR, TG-DSC and other experimental results are combined to analyze the extraction weakening effect and the correlation analysis of the spontaneous-combustion characteristic parameters of raffinate coal. The results show that extraction can destroy the connection bond of coal molecules, change the content of dominant active groups in the coal spontaneous-combustion reaction, increase the lower limit of the key temperature nodes of coal spontaneous-combustion or extend the temperature range, resulting in an increase in the ignition-point temperature of coal and a decrease in coal quality. This paper will provide a theoretical basis for the study of the microscopic mechanism of coal spontaneous-combustion and then provide new ideas for the development of an active prevention and control technology for coal spontaneous-combustion. The first part of the review provides general information about the solvent extraction of organic compounds from solid samples and discusses various methods for its implementation: extraction in a Soxhlet apparatus, ultrasonic extraction, microwave-assisted extraction. Based on an analysis of review papers, information on the features of sample preparation using these methods is systematized, experimental parameters affecting extraction efficiency are considered, and examples of using these methods for isolating organic compounds in the analysis of solid environmental samples, food products, and plants are given. Summary: This study focused on the preparation of lipid concentrates with high contents of bioactive molecules. Different one‐step and two‐step extractions with non‐halogenated solvents (hexane, HX; isopropanol, IP) were carried out on Patagonian squid (Doryteuthis gahi) discards. As a first step, HX extractions (one, two or three times) were carried out. The resulting substrates were extracted with IP (two, three or four times). Analysis of lipid extracts included total lipid, phospholipid (PL) and tocopherol values, and fatty acid (FA) profile. HX extractions led to remarkable α‐ and γ‐tocopherol values (ca. 1400 and 23 mg kg−1 lipids, respectively); no effect (P > 0.05) of the number of HX extractions was observed. IP extracts provided high PL values (383–501 mg kg−1 lipids); the highest average values were detected with four IP extractions after three HX extractions. Values obtained for tocopherols and PLs were higher (P < 0.05) than those obtained by employing the conventional (chloroform/methanol, 1:1) lipid extraction (ca. 496 and 11 mg kg−1 lipids and 400 g kg−1 lipids, respectively). Range values detected for eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid values and the ω3/ω6 FA ratio were similar to those obtained by the conventional procedure. Spent galvanizing acid solution contains high concentrations of zinc salts, ferrous salts, and residual acids, exhibiting extremely high value-added recovery potential. However, achieving the efficient extraction and separation of Zn over Fe becomes particularly challenging under elevated Zn ion concentration. Here, the key extraction parameters, such as modifier ratio, Cyanex 923 concentration and ratio of organic phase to aqueous phase (O/A), are investigated. The stripping and regeneration of extractant, extraction mechanism, as well as high-value recovery of Zn and Fe resources are also comprehensively expounded. After the two-stage extraction, the extraction efficiency of Zn and Fe is 98.92 ​% and 2.09 ​%, respectively. Moreover, the stripping efficiency of Zn reaches 92.3 ​% with O/A ratio of 1 : 2, using oxalic acid as stripping agent. The predominant extracted species is confirmed to be Zn Cl 3 − , resulting in the formation of HZn Cl 3 ∙ R 3 PO complex. More importantly, the regenerated extractant can be recycled back into the extraction process, and the reproduced HCl, high-value recovered ZnO and Fe 2 O 3 can be used for different industrial fields. These findings lay a solid foundation for the efficient separation and comprehensive recovery of high-concentration spent galvanizing acid solution. The developed solvent extraction-stripping-calcination process has achieved the regeneration and recycling of extractant and HCl, as well as efficient recovery of high-value ZnO and Fe 2 O 3. A low-cost method for the simultaneous extraction of alkaloids and water-insoluble flavonoids and esters from Coptis chinensis Franch. (Abbrev. C. chinensis) was explored to provide a reference for the production of green plant-based preparations and traditional Chinese medicine formula granules. A combined extraction method with the deep eutectic solvents (DESs) of choline chloride and urea (molar mass ratio of 1:2) and organic solvent ethanol was used, supplemented by ultrasonic-assisted extraction (ultrasonic power: 150 W; ultrasonic temperature: 60 °C; treatment time: 15 min). The extraction efficiency of the 50% DES (choline chloride and urea) aqueous solution for berberine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine, and magnoflorine was found to be the highest and was superior to traditional ultrasonic extraction and water bath reflux extraction methods. Furthermore, the flavonoids and esters from C. chinensis residue were extracted using ethanol. The volatiles in four varieties of Japanese mandarins (Iyokan, Ponkan, Shiranui, and Unshiu mikan) were extracted by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and solvent extraction, then analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Principal component analysis (PCA) of the GC-MS data demonstrated distinct segregation of all four Japanese mandarin varieties. Esters, such as neryl acetate, distinguished Iyokan. Methylthymol uniquely characterised Ponkan, valencene was exclusive to Shiranui, and acids like hexanoic acid and heptanoic acid differentiated Unshiu mikan from the other three varieties. Aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) revealed 131 key odourants across four Japanese mandarins, including myrcene (peppery, terpenic), perillyl alcohol (green, spicy, floral), trans-nerolidol (sweet, floral), and trans-farnesol (woody, floral, green). Finally, sensory evaluation was conducted on the four Japanese mandarin peel extracts to describe the distinct aroma profile of each variety of Japanese mandarin: Iyokan had higher floral and juicy notes, Ponkan showed higher sulphury notes, Shiranui was perceived to have more albedo notes, and Unshiu mikan exhibited higher peely, green, and woody notes. Exploiting by-products from the oenological industry to extract antioxidant chemicals is a shared goal that combines the need to reduce the wine sector's environmental impact with the need to improve the availability of these biomolecules, according to a circular economy approach. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) have recently captured researchers' interest as a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional solvents due to their effectiveness, low toxicity, and stability. In this work, we set out to investigate several NaDES for the extraction of phenolic chemicals from local monovarietal grape pomace resulting from different vinification procedures (including both red and rosé vinification of Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes; rosé vinification of Susumaniello grapes and white vinification of Chardonnay, Fiano and Malvasia bianca grapes), with the additional goal of generalizing the use of NaDES to extract chemicals of interest from organisms selected from the wide plant biodiversity. Three binary choline chloride-based NaDES (DES-Lac, DES-Tar, and DES-Gly, with lactic acid, tartaric acid, and glycerol as hydrogen bond donors, respectively) were compared to ethanol as a conventional solvent, and the extracts were evaluated using HPLC/MS and colorimetric techniques. The results revealed that each NaDES produces a substantially higher total phenolic yield than ethanol (up to 127.8 mg/g DW from Primitivo rosé grape pomace). DES-Lac and DES-Tar were more effective for anthocyanins extraction; the most abundant compound was malvidin 3-O-glucoside (highest extraction yield with DES-Lac from Susumaniello pomace: 29.4 mg/g DW). Regarding phenolic compounds, DES-Gly was the most effective NaDES producing results comparable to ethanol. Unexpectedly, Chardonnay pomace has the greatest content of astilbin. In most cases, grape pomace extracts obtained by rosé and white vinification provided the maximum yield. As a result, NaDES have emerged as a viable alternative to traditional organic solvent extraction techniques, allowing for higher (or equal) yields while significantly lowering costs, hazards, and environmental impact. The aim of this work was to develop an effective method for obtaining perrhenic acid from available ammonia waste solutions using the solvent extraction method. An ammonia waste solution was used as the test material, with Re and NH4+ concentrations of 13.5 and 43.7 g/dm3, respectively. The scope of this study includes the following: the selection of an appropriate extractant for testing, and the examination of the impact of individual parameters on the efficiency and selectivity of extraction and stripping. The obtained results made it possible to determine the conditions for the production of perrhenic acid via the extraction method using organic solutions of trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride (Cyphos IL 101). The outcome of this study was the development of a method for obtaining perrhenic acid and the production of the acid sample with an efficiency of >90% and a Re concentration of >100 g/dm3. Methods for obtaining high-purity perrhenic acid (with metallic impurities content below 100 ppm) of a high concentration > 200 g/dm3 and entirely from secondary raw materials were compared. Comparative analyses of three methods were performed: electrodialysis, solvent extraction (research carried out directly as part of the Small Grant project acronym RenMet), and ion-exchange (developed as part of previous projects implemented by Łukasiewicz-IMN). The basic process parameters were selected as comparative indicators: efficiency and selectivity of the process, purity of the obtained product, availability and consumption of raw materials and reagents, equipment necessary to carry out the process, the profitability of the technology, and the ecological aspects, i.e., the possibility of managing the generated solid waste and post-production solutions. Analysis of the verified indicators allowed us to select the most economically and ecologically advantageous method of obtaining high-purity perrhenic acid from secondary raw materials. Its preparation using the ion-exchange method emphasizes the product's purity and the process's simplicity, using readily available waste materials and renewable ion-exchange resin, and is based on a sustainable circular economy. Phyllostachys glauca McClure leaves (PML), as economical natural product material, contain abundant phenols, particularly flavonoids, with significant biological activities that contribute to their widespread applications in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. To study the significant phenols in PML, an ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent extraction method with high efficiency and low toxicity was established for extracting the phenols from PML and the bamboo leaves of 17 other bamboo species. Using the Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) method, the content of phenols in the leaves of the 18 bamboo species was determined. PML were found to contain neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, isoorientin, and orientin at contents of 0.793 ± 00.17 mg/g, 0.491 ± 0.0081 mg/g, 0.485 ± 0.0043 mg/g, 0.465 ± 0.0021 mg/g, and 0.044 ± 0.0005 mg/g, respectively, with a total content of 2.278 mg/g. These contents were significantly higher than those found in the leaves of 17 other bamboo species. Additionally, the significant phenols, neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, and cryptochlorogenic acid were found simultaneously in the leaves of 15 bamboo species, especially in PML. Therefore, PML can be viewed as the natural product material with considerable application values, owing to its abundant phenols, and can exhibit its importance in utilizing neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, and cryptochlorogenic acid as resources. The term natural oil refers to a fixed (non‐volatile) oil of animal or plant origin. These types of oils – in contrast to essential (volatile) oils, which are obtained by steam distillation methods of plant matter – are typically obtained from plant seeds and nuts by a mechanical pressing technique or solvent extraction. The natural movement in cosmetics of the 21st century has led to renewed interest in formulating skin care products with botanical ingredients. In this article, we discuss the benefits and caveats of natural oil treatments as moisturizing agents (as occlusives and emollients) as well as their utility in wound healing and treatment of skin diseases. We also address the paradoxical behaviour of natural oils in relation to barrier function and highlight the current state of our knowledge with respect to the use of natural oils in neonatal skin care. Banana peels, comprising about 35% of the fruit's weight, are often discarded, posing environmental and economic issues. This research focuses on recycling banana peel waste by optimizing advanced extraction techniques, specifically microwave-assisted (MAE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), for the isolation of phenolic compounds. A choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) with glycerol in a 1:3 ratio with a water content of 30% (w/w) was compared to 30% ethanol. Parameters, including sample-to-solvent ratio (SSR), extraction time, and temperature for MAE or amplitude for UAE, were varied. Extracts were analyzed for hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity using FRAP and ABTS assays. DES outperformed ethanol, with HCA content ranging from 180.80 to 765.92 mg/100 g and flavonoid content from 96.70 to 531.08 mg/100 g, accompanied by higher antioxidant activity. Optimal MAE conditions with DES were an SSR of 1:50, a temperature of 60 °C, and a time of 10 min, whereas an SSR of 1:60, time of 5 min, and 75% amplitude were optimal for UAE. The polyphenolic profile of optimized extracts comprised 19 individual compounds belonging to the class of flavonols, flavan-3-ols, and phenolic acids. This study concluded that DESs, with their superior extraction efficiency and environmental benefits, are promising solvents for the extraction of high-value bioactive compounds from banana peels and offer significant potential for the food and pharmaceutical industries. The present study evaluated three green extraction methods, accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and laser irradiation extraction (LE), for the polyphenolic compounds and vitamin C extraction of Cornus mas L. and Crataegus monogyna fruit extracts. The polyphenols and vitamin C of extracts were quantified using HPLC-DAD, and the total phenolic content, flavonoid content, antioxidant activity (DPPH and reducing power), and antidiabetic activity were also studied. The antidiabetic activity was examined by the inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, and in vitro on a beta TC cell line (β-TC-6). The results showed significant differentiation in the extraction yield between the methods used, with the ASE and LE presenting the highest values. The C. mas fruit extract obtained by ASE exhibited the best antioxidant activity, reaching an IC50 value of 31.82 ± 0.10 µg/mL in the DPPH assay and 33.95 ± 0.20 µg/mL in the reducing power assay. The C. mas fruit extracts obtained by ASE and LE also have the highest inhibitory activity on enzymes associated with metabolic disorders: α-amylase (IC50 = 0.44 ± 0.02 µg/mL for the extract obtained by ASE, and 0.11 ± 0.01 µg/mL for the extract obtained by LE at combined wavelengths of 1270 + 1550 nm) and α-glucosidase (IC50 of 77.1 ± 3.1 µg/mL for the extract obtained by ASE, and 98.2 ± 4.7 µg/mL for the extract obtained by LE at combined wavelengths of 1270 + 1550 nm). The evaluation of in vitro antidiabetic activity demonstrated that the treatment with C. mas and C. monogyna fruit extracts obtained using ASE stimulated the insulin secretion of β-TC-6 cells, both under normal conditions and hyperglycemic conditions, as well. All results suggest that C. mas and C. monogyna fruit extracts are good sources of bioactive molecules with antioxidant and antidiabetic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a novel dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) method that employs solidified hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) with hydrophilic DES acting as the dispersant. The aim is to enrich polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from water samples for subsequent determination by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The effects of both the hydrophobic DES as the extractant and the hydrophilic DES as the dispersant were thoroughly investigated. Optimization of the key factors influencing extraction efficiency was performed, and the method was subsequently validated. Specifically, a hydrophobic DES called DES2, prepared by combining thymol and decanoic acid in a molar ratio of 3:2, was selected as the extraction solvent. Meanwhile, a hydrophilic DES named DES6, prepared from choline chloride and acetic acid in a molar ratio of 1:2, was chosen as a dispersant. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the developed method exhibited excellent linearity over the concentration range of 0.01–5.0 µg/L, low limits of detection ranging from 3.0 to 5.1 ng/L, relative standard deviations less than 4.1%, and enrichment factors between 182 and 204 for PCBs.
