12. Larval mosquito predation: evaluation of the effectiveness of five aquatic arthropod species against larvae of Culex pipiens Linnaeus, 1758 (Diptera: Culicidae).

Abstract

Mosquitoes are insects of medical interest. They contribute to the transmission and spread of many viral and parasitic diseases. Various methods have been used to control mosquitoes such as conventional insecticides, which are widely used throughout the world and have a negative impact on the environment and targeted species. Predatory insects are significant for the biocontrol of various pests, including the important potential against the larval instars of mosquitoes. In this study, we tested the efficacy of five species Piona uncata Koenike, 1888; Notonecta glauca Linnaeus, 1758; Corixa punctata Illiger, 1807, Ilyocoris cimicoide Linnaeus, 1758; and Sympetrum striolatum Charpentier, 1840 against the fourth instars larvae of Culex pipiens Linnaeus, 1758, according to two exposure phases (Light phase, Twilight phase). The predation assays show a significant effect of tested species against mosquito larvae with the following decreasing order of efficacy: S. striolatum> N. gluca> P. uncata> I. cimicoides> C. pinctata. The early larval instars are the most favourable trophic choice of the five predatory species. On the other hand, we noticed a difference in the predation rate for each species during the two experimental periods. The light phase exhibits the highest predatory efficacy than the twilight phase. Abstract

Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) is considered as a major stored product pest. Conventional insecticides induce adverse effects on the environment. Plant derivative products constitute a promising alternative for pest control. The purpose of our research was to identify the chemical profile of essential oil (EO) extracted from Schinus molle L. (Anacardiaceae) and to evaluate the fumigant and the contact toxicity, and the repellent activity of this oil on adults of Rhyzopertha dominica F. (Coleoptera), a major pest in products that are stored around the world. The effects of this oil were examined on biochemical profile (energy reserves and Proteins), selective biomarkers like acetylcholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferases (GST) and glutathione (GSH), and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). Digestive enzymes were also investigated. The major chemical compounds identified by the GC-MS were α-phellandrene (16.613%), ß-phellandrene (12.104%), elemol (9.028%) and β-eudesmol (5.872%). Then, we evaluated the repellent activity, and also the effects in nutritional reserves and some biomarkers. This EO exhibited an insecticidal and repellent activity as a function of the exposure time and concentrations. Contact (LC50 at 24 h: 19.99 μL/mL) is the most effective mode of application compared to fumigation (LC50 at 24h: 174.30 μL/L air). S. molle EO was also investigated in digestive enzymes' activities (α-amylase, lipase, chitinase and protease). Our results revealed a decrease in both α-amylase, lipase, protease and chitinase activities in treated adults compared to controls. In addition, we noticed a neurotoxic activity of S. molle EO traduced by a decrease of AChE. An induction of the detoxification system was observed via a decrease in GSH rate and an increase in GST activity. Moreover, the treatment induces an alteration of biochemical profile of R. dominica adults. Lastly, essential oil was examined on nucleic acids. Results showed an increase in DNA and RNA amount in treated adults when compared with control. Due to their effective source of bioactive compounds, the EO from the studied plant could be used as an alternative strategy for the management of stored product pests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Algeria is a case study of biodiversity ignorance. To date, there are neither complete inventories for any taxa nor atlas across the country! Yet, Algeria is of great importance for global biodiversity. The coastal area of Algeria is part of the global biodiversity hotspot which is the Mediterranean perimeter and has several regional red spots of biodiversity. Biodiversity provides raw material resources necessary for living beings' survival and maintaining atmospheric quality, climate regulation, water quality, and soil fertility. In addition, macrobenthic fauna is an important provider of aquatic ecosystems. The present study aimed to determine the biodiversity of the invertebrate community from Echatt Lake (Northeast Algeria) located in a protected area classified by Ramsar in 1983, and to evaluate the impact of anthropogenic activities using water physicochemical parameters on their structure and function. Samples were collected monthly over one year (January 2019-December 2019) at four selected stations, and 2,861 specimens were collected. The identified species (16 species) belong to 9 families: Naucoridae, Hydrophilidae, Notonectidae, Pleidae, Corexidae, Eylaidae, Pionidae, Daphniidae, and Copepoda. Seven physicochemical parameters (temperature, hydrogen potential, electrical conductivity, hydrometric title, alkalimetric title, complete alkalimetric titer, and turbidity) of the water were also determined in each station to evaluate their influence on the abundance and distribution of the invertebrate fauna. The pH and the apparent turbidity influence the invertebrate fauna, while the richness was relatively low at stations 2 and 4, located near anthropogenic sources of pollution. The data obtained permitted us to evaluate the possible impact of anthropogenic activities on the biodiversity of invertebrates.

Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the insecticidal activities of an essential oil extracted from Eucalyptus globulusand a bioactive molecule, 1,8-Cineole against a stored product pest, Tribolium confusum(Jacquelin du Val, 1868). Toxicological tests carried out by fumigation revealed the insecticidal activity of these two treatments with a concentration–response relationship. In addition, the repellency test demonstrated the repulsive potential of these two treatments toward T. confusum. Furthermore, they activate enzymes of intermediary metabolism via an increase in alanine aminotransferase, aspartate transaminase and alkaline phosphatase in T. confusumadults. Moreover, EO and its major component induce an increase of the lipid and carbohydrate contents in adults. Results of nutritional indices showed a decrease in the relative growth rate, relative consumption rate and efficiency of conversion of ingested food, accompanied by a decrease in digestive enzymes, α-amylase, chitinase, protease and lipase in treated series when compared with control. The results obtained indicate the potential use of this essential oil or its main component as an ecologically safe natural insecticide or repellent against stored wheat pests.

47. CADMIUM EXPOSURE ON Donax trunculus (MOLLUSCA BIVALVIA) LETHALITY PARAMETERS AND BIOMARKERS RESPONSES.

Abstract

Cadmium is a non-essential heavy metal in the biological system. In this study, we have highlighted to evaluate of the effect toxicity of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) against Marine Bivalve Donax trunculus L. (Mollusca, Bivalvia) under laboratory conditions. The acute bioassay tests at various gradient concentrations of cadmium (5, 7.6, and 10 mg/L) were performed to estimate lethal concentrations 50 (LC50 Concentration estimated that produces a 50% mortality in a test population over a specific period) and 90 (LC90) for 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours of exposure. 96h-LC50 and 96h-LC90 values are: 2.59 and 9.25 mg/L respectively. In addition, the sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC25) at acute exposure (96 h) which are: 0.72 mg/L and 1.32 mg/L respectively, and their fiducial limits were investigated. The results obtained indicate that cadmium causes mortality in the species studied with a Concentration-response relationship. Thus, specimens of this marine bivalve were experimentally exposed to CdCl2 at concentrations corresponding to 96h-LC10 and 96h-LC50, to evaluate the effect of toxicity on catalase (CAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities, followed by a recovery period during 4 days. Results showed that Cd inhibited AChE activity suggesting neurotoxicity disturbances. In addition, we observed a stimulation of the detoxification system as shown by an increase in catalase activity. Additionally, the transfer of individuals exposed to CdCl2 in untreated water showed a gradual restoration of the initial state. The data obtained from this study will provide useful information for understanding the toxicological process of CdCl2 in Donax trunculus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; The granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is known as a primary pest; and is able to feed on whole and undamaged cereal grains. This pest is probably one of the most destructive stored-product insect pests throughout the world affecting the quantity as well as quality of the grains. Azadirachtin was found to exhibit fumigant and contact toxicity and the mortality increased as function the concentration and exposure time. In addition, the obtained results revealed an increase in the percent repellency as a function of concentration. Biomarker measurements in treated adult (LC25 and LC50) revealed, activation of detoxification system as showed by an increase in CAT and GST activity and also a decrease in GSH rate. Moreover, nutrition depletion index was found to be concentration dependent depicting maximum reduction at LC50 concentration. The biochemical compositions show that azadirachtin affected the energy reserves of adult of S. granarius. The results of persistence testing of azadirachtin applied by fumigation showed that their toxicity decrease as function the time. This study has highlighted the bioinsecticide activity of azadirachtin against granary weevil.
