24. Bypass water flow through unsaturated microaggregated tropical soils

Abstract

The possibility of occurrence of bypass flow in microaggregated soils at water-application rates below those needed to pond water on the surface was determined. It was found that bypass flow occured in these soils at water application rates lower than the saturated flow rate. An inverse curvilinear relationship between the rate of water application and the increase in core weight per unit flux was observed. These results suggested that water flow in these soils occurred along the walls of unfilled pores.

Complex liquid structures such as metallic foams were produced in a furnace that allowed in situ X-ray monitoring of the evolution of the structure and distribution of the liquid in the foam. The experiments were carried out during parabolic flights which provided varying levels of gravity. The evolution of the characteristic liquid fraction profiles due to gravity induced drainage was measured and analysed in terms of the foam drainage equation, obtaining viscosity and surface tension by fitting solutions of the equation to the experimental data. The surface tension of the melt in the foam was decreased up to 40%. Effective viscosities of up to 139 times the viscosity of a pure bulk melt were observed. These effects could be attributed to the smaller influence of solid particles dispersed in the melt and the larger influence of the complex foam structure.

Abstract

International audience; A new model for solid skin formation on submicrocellular foams based on PMMA is presented. Structural foams has been produced by the solid state foaming technique using as precursor material a blend of poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA and a triblock copolymer [poly(methyl methacrylate)-block poly(butyl acrylate)-block poly(methyl methacrylate), MAM]. An analysis on the skin thickness and densification has been carried based on x-ray high resolution radiography. The obtained results have been related to the fabrication parameters, i.e. MAM content of the blend and foaming pressure, and provide us a new vision about the processes that control the formation of a solid unfoamed, or partially unfoamed, skin in these materials.

Abstract

[Abstract] In this paper we present an analysis of the traditional tour construction heuristics for the vehicle routing problem, providing new construction techniques that outperform some of the traditional methods for the benchmark problems. A wide description of the traditional methods is presented compared to the new constructional procedures developed in the framework of this research, and based on a new combination of the addition and insertion procedures. All methods are tested on Solomon's 56 benchmark problems, for which the method developed provides better results for problems.

Abstract

The operation of glass furnaces with oxy-fuel combustion in combination with advanced heat recovery is a compelling low cost solution. Praxair has developed a new heat recovery technology for oxy-fuel fired furnaces in which regenerators are used in a similar way as conventional regenerators, which recover waste heat from the furnace flue gas. The OPTIMELT⁜ Thermo-Chemical Regenerator (TCR) technology uses the stored waste heat to reform a mixture of natural gas and recirculated flue gas to hot syngas, resulting in efficient heat recovery. The natural gas reacts endothermically in the hot checker pack with the water vapor and CO2 in the recycled flue gas, forming H2 and CO as a hot syngas fuel. The OPTIMELT™ TCR system is simple and operated at atmospheric pressure without the need of catalysts or separate steam generation. It reduces fuel consumption of an oxy-fuel fired furnace by about 20% and offers an attractive conversion option for existing air-regenerator furnaces, with more than 30% fuel reduction compared to the air-fuel base case. This technology is currently being demonstrated on a 50 t/d commercial glass furnace at Pavisa. This paper introduces the operating principles of the TCR and highlights some milestones recently achieved at the demonstration site. Abstract

Traditionally, comparisons to control problems dealt with comparing k test treatments to either a positive control or a negative control. However, in certain situations, it is necessary to include both types of control in the study. When comparing k test treatments to both positive and negative controls, the null hypothesis is composite and finding the least favorable configuration (LFC) under the null analytically is difficult. We propose a numerical solution for this problem. Using our method, we show that the LFC under the null is when half of the test treatment means are equal to the mean of the negative control and the other half of the test treatment means are equal to the mean of the positive control. We calculate critical points at the LFC for k =2–6. This work was motivated by real life problems that we discuss and illustrate with an example. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. Gas Diffusion and Re-Diffusion in Polyethylene Foams

Abstract

In this work, the effective diffusion coefficient of the gas contained in closed cell polyethylene foams under static loading is measured. To do this, compressive creep experiments were performed on low density polyethylene foams produced under a gas diffusion process. Density dependence of this coefficient has been analysed as well as the variation of pressure with time inside the cells. Finally, immediately after compressive creep, the recovery behaviour of the foams was also characterised. Different abilities for recovering were observed depending on the density of the foam and the absolute recovery resulted independent of the initial stress applied.
