Abstract

In response to ESA Voyage 2050 announcement of opportunity, we propose an ambitious L-class mission to explore one of the most exciting bodies in the Solar System, Saturn largest moon Titan. Titan, a "world with two oceans", is an organic-rich body with interior-surface-atmosphere interactions that are comparable in complexity to the Earth. Titan is also one of the few places in the Solar System with habitability potential. Titan remarkable nature was only partly revealed by the Cassini-Huygens mission and still holds mysteries requiring a complete exploration using a variety of vehicles and instruments. The proposed mission concept POSEIDON (Titan POlar Scout/orbitEr and In situ lake lander DrONe explorer) would perform joint orbital and in situ investigations of Titan. It is designed to build on and exceed the scope and scientific/technological accomplishments of Cassini-Huygens, exploring Titan in ways that were not previously possible, in particular through full close-up and in situ coverage over long periods of time. In the proposed mission architecture, POSEIDON consists of two major elements: a spacecraft with a large set of instruments that would orbit Titan, preferably in a low-eccentricity polar orbit, and a suite of in situ investigation components, i.e. a lake lander, a "heavy" drone (possibly amphibious) and/or a fleet of mini-drones, dedicated to the exploration of the polar regions. The ideal arrival time at Titan would be slightly before the next northern Spring equinox (2039), as equinoxes are the most active periods to monitor still largely unknown atmospheric and surface seasonal changes. The exploration of Titan northern latitudes with an orbiter and in situ element(s) would be highly complementary with the upcoming NASA New Frontiers Dragonfly mission that will provide in situ exploration of Titan equatorial regions in the mid-2030s., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1908.01374

Abstract

Thanks to the Cassini-Huygens mission, Titan, the pale orange dot of Pioneer and Voyager encounters has been revealed to be a dynamic, hydrologically-shaped, organic-rich ocean world offering unparalleled opportunities to explore prebiotic chemistry. And while Cassini-Huygens revolutionized our understanding of each of the three layers of Titan--the atmosphere, the surface, and the interior--we are only beginning to hypothesize how these realms interact. In this paper, we summarize the current state of Titan knowledge and discuss how future exploration of Titan would address some of the next decade's most compelling planetary science questions. We also demonstrate why exploring Titan, both with and beyond the Dragonfly New Frontiers mission, is a necessary and complementary component of an Ocean Worlds Program that seeks to understand whether habitable environments exist elsewhere in our solar system., Comment: Submitted to the PSJ Focus Issue on Ocean World Exploration

Abstract

We outline a flagship-class mission concept focused on studying Titan as a global system, with particular emphasis on the polar regions. Investigating Titan from the unique standpoint of a polar orbit would enable comprehensive global maps to uncover the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, and the topography and geophysical environment of the surface and subsurface. The mission includes two key elements: (1) an orbiter spacecraft, which also acts as a data relay, and (2) one or more small probes to directly investigate Titan's seas and make the first direct measurements of their liquid composition and physical environment. The orbiter would carry a sophisticated remote sensing payload, including a novel topographic lidar, a long-wavelength surface-penetrating radar, a sub-millimeter sounder for winds and for mesospheric/thermospheric composition, and a camera and near-infrared spectrometer. An instrument suite to analyze particles and fields would include a mass spectrometer to focus on the interactions between Titan's escaping upper atmosphere and the solar wind and Saturnian magnetosphere. The orbiter would enter a stable polar orbit around 1500 to 1800 km, from which vantage point it would make global maps of the atmosphere and surface. One or more probes, released from the orbiter, would investigate Titan's seas in situ, including possible differences in composition between higher and lower latitude seas, as well as the atmosphere during the parachute descent. The number of probes, as well as the instrument complement on the orbiter and probe, remain to be finalized during a mission study that we recommend to NASA as part of the NRC Decadal Survey for Planetary Science now underway, with the goal of an overall mission cost in the "small flagship" category of ~$2 bn. Abstract

Exercising at submaximal intensity with a hand dynamometer causes mild hemodynamic adaptations that can improve cardiovascular function. However, hemodynamic responses and fatigue have not been adequately studied in an isometric exercise protocol combined with blood flow restriction (BFR). Our study aimed to examine and compare acute hemodynamic responses and muscle fatigue after an isometric exercise session using a handgrip dynamometer, with and without BFR. Twelve volunteers performed the exercise protocol, with and without BFR, at random, with the BFR pressure set at 140 mmHg. Arterial blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation (SpO2), and muscle fatigue were measured before, during, and 15 min after the completion of the exercise session. Without BFR, we noticed a slight, albeit statistically insignificant, HR increase. The variations found in systolic and diastolic pressure were small and statistically insignificant. Furthermore, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) did not change significantly. Significantly higher levels of fatigue were found in exercise with BFR, compared to without BFR, at the end of each set of isometric contractions. In conclusion, a handgrip exercise session with mild BFR does not alter the acute hemodynamic responses to exercise in healthy volunteers. However, it results in higher muscle fatigue compared to that experienced after exercise without BFR.

Abstract

Some of the major discoveries of the recent Cassini-Huygens mission have put Titan and Enceladus firmly on the Solar System map. The mission has revolutionised our view of Solar System satellites, arguably matching their scientific importance with that of their planet. While Cassini-Huygens has made big surprises in revealing Titan's organically rich environment and Enceladus' cryovolcanism, the mission's success naturally leads us to further probe these findings. We advocate the acknowledgement of Titan and Enceladus science as highly relevant to ESA's long-term roadmap, as logical follow-on to Cassini-Huygens. In this white paper, we will outline important science questions regarding these satellites and identify the pertinent science themes we recommend ESA cover during the Voyage 2050 planning cycle. Addressing these science themes would make major advancements to the present knowledge we have about the Solar System, its formation, evolution and likelihood that other habitable environments exist outside the Earth's biosphere., Comment: White paper submitted in response to Voyage 2050 long-term plan in the ESA Science Programme

22. Evaluating Emergency Remote Assessment Adaptations in Higher Education due to COVID-19: Faculty Insights and Challenges

The purpose of this study was to critically examine the feedback obtained from higher education instructors regarding the implementation of the emergency remote assessment practices that took place within a university in the Republic of Cyprus, in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the changes that took place. This was essential since the abruptness of the pandemic did not always allow for smooth transitions during the introduction of these changes. Therefore, the results of this survey study that was based on an online questionnaire identified certain aspects of the assessment adaptations that were evaluated as positive (e.g., the use of e-invigilation software), and other aspects that were not as positive (e.g., performing oral examinations after the written test). However, the results also revealed that cheating and plagiarism were issues that concerned the instructors, as were the technological problems that were faced. All these results are discussed holistically at the end of this article in order to guide further research and decision making regarding online assessments.

Abstract

We present an analysis of Titan data acquired by the Cassini Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) at the landing site of the Dragonfly mission, using a new version of our radiative transfer model for Titan, with significant updates for the spectroscopic parameters of atmospheric gases and photochemical aerosols. Our updated radiative transfer model is validated against the in situ spectroscopic measurements of the Huygens probe during its descent and once landed. We confirm that aerosols with a fractal dimension of 2.3–2.4 provide the best fit to the observations. We apply our radiative transfer model to four VIMS data cubes over the Selk crater region including the Dragonfly landing and exploration areas, further validating our model by producing consistent aerosol population and surface albedo maps. These infrared albedo maps, further corrected from the photometry, enable us to study the Selk crater region in terms of surface composition, landscape formation, and evolution. Our results suggest that the Selk crater is in an intermediate state of degradation and that the mountainous terrains of the area (including the crater rim and ejecta) are likely to be dominated by fine grains of tholin-like sediment. This organic sediment would be transported to the lowlands (crater floor and surrounding plains), possibly with water ice particles, by rivers, and further deposited and processed to form the sand particles that feed the neighboring dune fields. These results provide information for the operational and scientific preparation of the Dragonfly mission, paving the way for future exploration of Titan’s surface composition and geology.

Abstract

The role of assessment in education has been vital, since the earliest establishment of formal education. Though assessment in its early history was used only as a measurement instrument, alternative assessment of student achievement has arrived on the scene the past two decades. It is accepted that assessment can be used for learning also known as Formative Assessment. In this context, many studies have emerged worldwide investigating students’ and teachers’ perceptions on assessment approaches and purposes as these will affect their practices. The current study uses a Sequential Mixed Methods design to investigate perceptions on the purposes of students’ assessment in general and the assessment framework specific for the Modern Greek language subject within the New National Curriculum in Cyprus (NNC). The methods involved two questionnaires; the one administered to Greek language teachers (N=95) followed by 7 individual interviews and the other administered to lower secondary school students (N=599) followed by three group interviews involving 15 students in total. The qualitative data helped explain and build upon initial quantitative results while involving people from the same sample. Results are discussed in light of other research showing that the perceptions of teachers and students are in alignment with the current shift of assessment to be used for enhancing teaching and learning. Both parties tend to agree with the legitimate purposes of assessment. Abstract

Uranus is one of the most under-explored and least understood planetary magnetospheres in our Solar System yet the unique system geometry and ambient solar wind conditions conspire to produce a system that is fundamentally different to other planetary magnetospheres in our Solar System. Understanding from Earth’s magnetosphere provides partial or only qualitative explanations for some features observed in Voyager 2 data and in some cases cannot explain the data, highlighting fundamental gaps in our understanding. This demonstrates that there are a range of key questions in heliophysics that are best addressed at targets other than the terrestrial magnetosphere and interplanetary/interstellar space. A Uranus Flagship mission has been identified as a top priority in the Planetary Decadal Survey and will arrive during equinox conditions at Uranus. This will provide an opportunity to study a pole-on magnetosphere over an extended period of time, studying its dynamics, diurnal variability, and evolution as season progresses towards solstice with a return to Voyager 2-like conditions. Uranus is a unique natural laboratory for testing and developing fundamental theories of space physics that will provide insight into universal magnetospheric processes in our solar system and beyond. In this White Paper we urge Heliophysics to support such a Flagship mission which will provide new insights into how magnetospheres work and important data on the outer heliosphere.

39. The chemical composition of the Soi crater region on Titan

Abstract

The Soi crater region, with the well-preserved Soi crater in its center, covers almost 10% of Titan’s surface. Schoenfeld et al. (2023) [1] mapped this region at 1:800,000 scale and produced a geomorphological map showing that the area consists of 22 distinct geomorphological units. The region includes the boundaries between the equatorial regions of Titan and the mid-latitudes and extends into the high northern latitudes (above 50o). We analyzed 262 different locations from several Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) datacubes using a radiative transfer technique [2] and a mixing model [3], yielding compositional constraints on Titan’s optical surface layer and near-surface substrate compositional constraints using RADAR microwave emissivity. We have derived combinations of top surface materials between dark materials, tholin-like materials, water-ice, and methane. We found no evidence of CO2 and NH3 ice. 41. Factorial Structure, Gender Invariance, and Predictive Validity of the Students’ Conceptions of Assessment-VI Inventory

Abstract

Abstract.Student conceptions about assessment may be positive or negative, exemplify various beliefs and expectations, and are hypothesized to relate to student outcomes, for example, grades. The current study investigates the factorial structure of the Students’ Conceptions of Assessment-VI inventory using data from Gymnasium students, that is, 7th- to 9th-graders, in Cyprus. Acceptable fit was found for a multidimensional hierarchical model with four second-order factors relating to assessment conceptions: improvement of teaching and learning, external motives, affective/social activity, and a negative, unfair, or valueless practice. Strong evidence of measurement invariance with respect to gender was found, with higher endorsement of some positive beliefs about assessment by females. The conception of assessment for improvement positively predicted language grades, while the other three assessment conceptions had negative regression coefficients. The adaptation of the inventory in Greek demonstrated good psychometric properties. Findings suggest that conceptions about assessment can be adaptive or maladaptive and relate to achievement outcomes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to critically examine the feedback obtained from higher education instructors regarding the implementation of the emergency remote assessment practices that took place within a university in the Republic of Cyprus, in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the changes that took place. This was essential since the abruptness of the pandemic did not always allow for smooth transitions during the introduction of these changes. Therefore, the results of this survey study that was based on an online questionnaire identified certain aspects of the assessment adaptations that were evaluated as positive (e.g., the use of e-invigilation software), and other aspects that were not as positive (e.g., performing oral examinations after the written test). However, the results also revealed that cheating and plagiarism were issues that concerned the instructors, as were the technological problems that were faced. All these results are discussed holistically at the end of this article in order to guide further research and decision making regarding online assessments.
