Search

The High-Resolution Multi-Object Spectrograph (HRMOS) is a facility instrument that we plan to propose for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), following the initial presentation at the VLT 2030 workshop held at ESO in June 2019. HRMOS provides a combination of capabilities that are essential to carry out breakthrough science across a broad range of active research areas from stellar astrophysics and exoplanet studies to Galactic and Local Group archaeology. HRMOS fills a gap in capabilities amongst the landscape of future instrumentation planned for the next decade. The key characteristics of HRMOS will be high spectral resolution (R = 60000 - 80000) combined with multi-object (20-100) capabilities and long term stability that will provide excellent radial velocity precision and accuracy (10m/s). Initial designs predict that a SNR~100 will be achievable in about one hour for a star with mag(AB) = 15, while with the same exposure time a SNR~ 30 will be reached for a star with mag(AB) = 17. The combination of high resolution and multiplexing with wavelength coverage extending to relatively blue wavelengths (down to 380\,nm), makes HRMOS a spectrograph that will push the boundaries of our knowledge and that is envisioned as a workhorse instrument in the future. The science cases presented in this White Paper include topics and ideas developed by the Core Science Team with the contributions from the astronomical community, also through the wide participation in the first HRMOS Workshop (https://indico.ict.inaf.it/event/1547/) that took place in Firenze (Italy) in October 2021., Comment: 88 pages, 39 figures. We have determined stellar mass functions of 120 Milky Way globular clusters and massive LMC/SMC star clusters based on a comparison of archival Hubble Space Telescope photometry with a large grid of direct N-body simulations. We find a strong correlation of the global mass function slopes of star clusters with both their internal relaxation times as well as their lifetimes. Once dynamical effects are being accounted for, the mass functions of most star clusters are compatible with an initial mass function described by a broken power-law distribution $N(m) \sim m^\alpha$ with break masses at 0.4 M$_\odot$ and 1.0 M$_\odot$ and mass function slopes of $\alpha_{Low}=-0.3$ for stars with masses $m<0.4$ M$_\odot$, $\alpha_{High}=-2.30$ for stars with $m>1.0$ M$_\odot$ and $\alpha_{Med}=-1.65$ for intermediate-mass stars. Alternatively, a log-normal mass function with a characteristic mass $\log M_C = -0.36$ and width $\sigma_C=0.28$ for low-mass stars and a power-law mass function for stars with $m>1$ M$_\odot$ also fits our data. We do not find a significant environmental dependency of the initial mass function with either cluster mass, density, global velocity dispersion or metallicity. Our results lead to a larger fraction of high-mass stars in globular clusters compared to canonical Kroupa/Chabrier mass functions, increasing the efficiency of self-enrichment in clusters and helping to alleviate the mass budget problem of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters. We present the results of a spectroscopic survey of the outskirts of 4 globular clusters -- NGC 1261, NGC 4590, NGC 1904, and NGC 1851 -- covering targets within 1 degree from the cluster centres, with 2dF/AAOmega on the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and FLAMES on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We extracted chemo-dynamical information for individual stars, from which we estimated the velocity dispersion profile and the rotation of each cluster. The observations are compared to direct $N$-body simulations and appropriate {\sc limepy}/{\sc spes} models for each cluster to interpret the results. In NGC 1851, the detected internal rotation agrees with existing literature, and NGC 1261 shows some rotation signal beyond the truncation radius, likely coming from the escaped stars. We find that the dispersion profiles for both the observations and the simulations for NGC 1261, NGC 1851, and NGC 1904 do not decrease as the {\sc limepy}/{\sc spes} models predict beyond the truncation radius, where the $N$-body simulations show that escaped stars dominate; the dispersion profile of NGC 4590 follows the predictions of the {\sc limepy}/{\sc spes} models, though the data do not effectively extend beyond the truncation radius. The increasing/flat dispersion profiles in the outskirts of NGC 1261, NGC 1851 and NGC 1904, are reproduced by the simulations. Hence, the increasing/flat dispersion profiles of the clusters in question can be explained by the tidal interaction with the Galaxy without introducing dark matter., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures. We present observations of the stellar kinematics of the centre of the core collapsed globular cluster M15 obtained with the MUSE integral field spectrograph on the VLT operating in narrow field mode. Thanks to the use of adaptive optics, we obtain a spatial resolution of 0.1arcsec and are able to reliably measure the radial velocities of 864 stars within 8 arcsec of the centre of M15 thus providing the largest sample of radial velocities ever obtained for the innermost regions of this system. Combined with previous observations of M15 using MUSE in wide field mode and literature data, we find that the central kinematics of M15 are complex with the rotation axis of the core of M15 offset from the rotation axis of the bulk of the cluster. While this complexity has been suggested by previous work, we confirm it at higher significance and in more detail., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Globular clusters are large and dense agglomerate of stars. At variance with smaller clusters of stars, they exhibit signs of some chemical evolution. At least for this reason, they are intermediate between open clusters and massive objects such as nuclear clusters or compact galaxies. While some facts are well established, the increasing amount of observational data are revealing a complexity that has so far defied the attempts to interpret the whole data set in a simple scenario. We review this topic focusing on the main observational features of clusters in the Milky Way and its satellites. We find that most of the observational facts related to the chemical evolution in globular clusters are described as being primarily a function of the initial mass of the clusters, tuned by further dependence on the metallicity - that mainly affects specific aspects of the nucleosynthesis processes involved - and on the environment, that likely determines the possibility of indepenedent chemical evolution of the fragments or satellites, where the clusters form. We review the impact of multiple populations on different regions of the colour-magnitude diagram and underline the constraints related to the observed abundances of lithium, to the cluster dynamics, and to the frequency of binaries in stars of different chemical composition. We then re-consider the issues related to the mass budget and the relation between globular cluster and field stars. We collected radial velocities of more than 50.000 individual stars in 156 Galactic globular clusters (GGC) and matched them with HST photometry and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This allowed us to derive the GGC's mean proper motions and space velocities. By fitting a large set of N-body simulations to their velocity dispersion and surface density profiles, combined with new measurements of their internal radially dependent mass functions, we have determined their present-day masses and structural parameters, and for 144 GGCs their internal kinematics. We also derive the initial cluster masses by calculating the cluster orbits backwards in time applying suitable recipes to account for mass-loss and dynamical friction. We compare the results of a large grid of N-body simulations with the surface brightness and velocity dispersion profiles of the globular clusters $\omega$ Cen and NGC 6624. Our models include clusters with varying stellar-mass black hole retention fractions and varying masses of a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We find that an $\sim 45,000$ M$_\odot$ IMBH, whose presence has been suggested based on the measured velocity dispersion profile of $\omega$ Cen, predicts the existence of about 20 fast-moving, $m>0.5$ M$_\odot$ main-sequence stars with a (1D) velocity $v>60$ km/sec in the central 20 arcsec of $\omega$ Cen. However no such star is present in the HST/ACS proper motion catalogue of Bellini et al. (2017), strongly ruling out the presence of a massive IMBH in the core of $\omega$ Cen. Instead, we find that all available data can be fitted by a model that contains 4.6% of the mass of $\omega$ Cen in a centrally concentrated cluster of stellar-mass black holes. We show that this mass fraction in stellar-mass BHs is compatible with the predictions of stellar evolution models of massive stars. We also compare our grid of $N$-body simulations with NGC 6624, a cluster recently claimed to harbor a 20,000 M$_\odot$ black hole based on timing observations of millisecond pulsars. However, we find that models with $M_{IMBH}>1,000$ M$_\odot$ IMBHs are incompatible with the observed velocity dispersion and surface brightness profile of NGC 6624,ruling out the presence of a massive IMBH in this cluster. We present an account of the state of the art in the fields explored by the research community invested in 'Modeling and Observing DEnse STellar systems'. For this purpose, we take as a basis the activities of the MODEST-17 conference, which was held at Charles University, Prague, in September 2017. Reviewed topics include recent advances in fundamental stellar dynamics, numerical methods for the solution of the gravitational N-body problem, formation and evolution of young and old star clusters and galactic nuclei, their elusive stellar populations, planetary systems, and exotic compact objects, with timely attention to black holes of different classes of mass and their role as sources of gravitational waves. Such a breadth of topics reflects the growing role played by collisional stellar dynamics in numerous areas of modern astrophysics. Indeed, in the next decade, many revolutionary instruments will enable the derivation of positions and velocities of individual stars in the Milky Way and its satellites and will detect signals from a range of astrophysical sources in different portions of the electromagnetic and gravitational spectrum, with an unprecedented sensitivity. On the one hand, this wealth of data will allow us to address a number of long-standing open questions in star cluster studies; on the other hand, many unexpected properties of these systems will come to light, stimulating further progress of our understanding of their formation and evolution., Comment: 42 pages; accepted for publication in 'Computational Astrophysics and Cosmology'. As we enter a golden age for studies of internal kinematics and dynamics of Galactic globular clusters (GCs), it is timely to assess the performance of modelling techniques in recovering the mass, mass profile, and other dynamical properties of GCs. Here, we compare different mass-modelling techniques (distribution-function (DF)-based models, Jeans models, and a grid of N-body models) by applying them to mock observations from a star-by-star N-body simulation of the GC M 4 by Heggie. The mocks mimic existing and anticipated data for GCs: surface brightness or number density profiles, local stellar mass functions, line-of-sight velocities, and Hubble Space Telescope- and Gaia-like proper motions. We discuss the successes and limitations of the methods. We find that multimass DF-based models, Jeans, and N-body models provide more accurate mass profiles compared to single-mass DF-based models. We highlight complications in fitting the kinematics in the outskirts due to energetically unbound stars associated with the cluster ("potential escapers", not captured by truncated DF models nor by N-body models of clusters in isolation), which can be avoided with DF-based models including potential escapers, or with Jeans models. We discuss ways to account for mass segregation. For example, three-component DF-based models with freedom in their mass function are a simple alternative to avoid the biases of single-mass models (which systematically underestimate the total mass, half-mass radius, and central density), while more realistic multimass DF-based models with freedom in the remnant content represent a promising avenue to infer the total mass and the mass function of remnants., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS accepted

We observed a sample of 90 red giant branch (RGB) stars in NGC 2808 using FLAMES/GIRAFFE and the high resolution grating with the set up HR21. These stars have previous accurate atmospheric parameters and abundances of light elements. We derived aluminium abundances for them from the strong doublet Al I 8772-8773 Angstrom as in previous works of our group. In addition, we were able to estimate the relative CN abundances for 89 of the stars from the strength of a large number of CN features. When adding self consistent abundances from previous UVES spectra analysed by our team, we gathered [Al/Fe] ratios for a total of 108 RGB stars in NGC 2808. The full dataset of proton-capture elements is used to explore in details the five spectroscopically detected discrete components in this globular cluster. We found that different classes of polluters are required to reproduce the (anti)-correlations among all proton-capture elements in the populations P2, I1, and I2 with intermediate composition. This is in agreement with the detection of lithium in lower RGB second generation stars, requiring at least two kind of polluters. To have chemically homogeneous populations the best subdivision of our sample is into six components, as derived from statistical cluster analysis. By comparing different diagrams [element/Fe] vs [element/Fe] we show for the first time that a simple dilution model is not able to reproduce all the sub-populations in this cluster. Polluters of different masses are required. We have derived from VIMOS spectroscopy the radial velocities for a sample of 71 stars selected from CFHT/Megacam photometry around the Galactic globular cluster NGC7492. In the resulting velocity distribution, it is possible to distinguish two relevant non-Galactic kinematic components along the same line of sight: a group of stars at $\langle{v_{\rm r}}\rangle \sim 125$km s$^{-1}$ which is compatible with the velocity of the old leading arm of the Sagittarius tidal stream, and a larger number of objects at $\langle{v_{\rm r}}\rangle \sim -110$km s$^{-1}$ that might be identified as members of the trailing wrap of the same stream. The systemic velocity of NGC7492 set at $v_{\rm r} \sim -177$km s$^{-1}$ differs significantly from that of both components, thus our results confirm that this cluster is not one of the globular clusters deposited by the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal in the Galactic halo, even if it is immersed in the stream. A group of stars with $ \sim -180$km s$^{-1}$ might be comprised of cluster members along one of the tidal tails of NGC7492., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present DECam imaging for the peculiar Galactic globular clusters NGC1851, NGC1904 (M79), NGC2298 and NGC2808. Our deep photometry reveals that all the clusters have an important contribution of stars beyond their King tidal radii and present tails with different morphologies. We have also explored the surroundings of the clusters where the presence of the Canis Major overdensity and/or the low Galactic latitude Monoceros ring at d~8kpc is evident. A second stellar system is found at d~17kpc and spans at least 18deg x 15deg in the sky. As one of the possible scenarios to explain that feature, we propose that the unveiled system is part of Monoceros explained as a density wave moving towards the outer Milky Way. Alternatively, the unveiled system might be connected with other known halo substructures or associated with the progenitor dwarf galaxy of NGC1851 and NGC1904, which are widely considered accreted globular clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables. We have derived the global mass functions of a sample of 35 Galactic globular clusters by comparing deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry with suitable multimass dynamical models. For a subset of 29 clusters with available radial velocity information we were also able to determine dynamical parameters, mass-to-light ratios and the mass fraction of dark remnants. The derived global mass functions are well described by single power-laws in the mass range $0.2 < m/M_\odot < 0.8$ with mass function slopes $\alpha>-1$. Less evolved clusters show deviations from a single-power law, indicating that the original shape of their mass distribution was not a power-law. We find a tight anticorrelation between the present-day mass function slopes and the half-mass relaxation times, which can be understood if clusters started from the same universal IMF and internal dynamical evolution is the main driver in shaping the present-day mass functions. Alternatively, IMF differences correlated with the present-day half-mass relaxation time are needed to explain the observed correlation. The large range of mass function slopes seen for our clusters implies that most globular clusters are dynamically highly evolved, a fact that seems difficult to reconcile with standard estimates for the dynamical evolution of clusters. The mass function slopes also correlate with the dark remnant fractions indicating a preferential retention of massive remnants in clusters subject to high mass-loss rates., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS in press

In this paper we compare the mass function slopes of Galactic globular clusters recently determined by Sollima & Baumgardt (2017) with a set of dedicated N-body simulations of star clusters containing between 65,000 to 200,000 stars. We study clusters starting with a range of initial mass functions (IMFs), black hole retention fractions and orbital parameters in the parent galaxy. We find that the present-day mass functions of globular clusters agree well with those expected for star clusters starting with Kroupa or Chabrier IMFs, and are incompatible with clusters starting with single power-law mass functions for the low-mass stars. The amount of mass segregation seen in the globular clusters studied by Sollima & Baumgardt (2017) can be fully explained by two-body relaxation driven mass segregation from initially unsegregated star clusters. Based on the present-day global mass functions, we expect that a typical globular cluster in our sample has lost about 75% of its mass since formation, while the most evolved clusters have already lost more than 90% of their initial mass and should dissolve within the next 1 to 2 Gyr. Most clusters studied by Sollima & Baumgardt also show a large difference between their central and global MF slopes, implying that the majority of Galactic globular clusters is either near or already past core collapse. As part of our on-going project on the homogeneous chemical characterization of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters (GCs), we studied NGC 5634, associated to the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy, using high-resolution spectroscopy of red giant stars collected with FLAMES@VLT. We present here the radial velocity distribution of the 45 observed stars, 43 of which are member, the detailed chemical abundance of 22 species for the seven stars observed with UVES-FLAMES, and the abundance of six elements for stars observed with GIRAFFE. On our homogeneous UVES metallicity scale we derived a low metallicity [Fe/H]=-1.867 +/-0.019 +/-0.065 dex (+/-statistical +/-systematic error) with sigma=0.050 dex (7 stars). We found the normal anti-correlations between light elements (Na and O, Mg and Al), signature of multiple populations typical of massive and old GCs. We confirm the associations of NGC 5634 to the Sgr dSph, from which the cluster was lost a few Gyr ago, on the basis of its velocity and position and the abundance ratios of alpha and neutron capture elements., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 11 tables; accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present a study of the kinematics of 101 stars observed with VIMOS around Whiting1, a globular cluster embedded in the Sagittarius tidal stream. The obtained velocity distribution shows the presence of two wraps of that halo substructure at the same heliocentric distance as that of the cluster and with well differentiated mean radial velocities. The most prominent velocity component seems to be associated with the trailing arm of Sagittarius with $$ ~ -130 km/s, which is consistent with the velocity of Whiting1. This result supports that this globular cluster was formed in Sagittarius and recently accreted by the Milky Way. The second component with $$ ~ 120 km/s might correspond to the leading arm of Sagittarius, which has been predicted by numerical simulations but with no conclusive observational evidence of its existence presented so far. This detection of the old leading wrap of Sagittarius in the southern hemisphere may be used to confirm and further constrain the models for its orbit and evolution., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present the results of a survey of N-body simulations aimed at exploring the evolution of compact binaries in multiple-population globular clusters.We show that as a consequence of the initial differences in the structural properties of the first-generation (FG) and the second-generation (SG) populations and the effects of dynamical processes on binary stars, the SG binary fraction decreases more rapidly than that of the FG population. The difference between the FG and SG binary fraction is qualitatively similar to but quantitatively smaller than that found for wider binaries in our previous investigations.The evolution of the radial variation of the binary fraction is driven by the interplay between binary segregation, ionization and ejection. Ionization and ejection counteract in part the effects of mass segregation but for compact binaries the effects of segregation dominate and the inner binary fraction increases during the cluster evolution. We explore the variation of the difference between the FG and the SG binary fraction with the distance from the cluster centre and its dependence on the binary binding energy and cluster structural parameters. The difference between the binary fraction in the FG and the SG populations found in our simulations is consistent with the results of observational studies finding a smaller binary fraction in the SG population., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures. We use a combination of data acquired with the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope and the Large Binocular Camera (LBC-blue) mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope, to sample the main sequence stars of the globular cluster NGC~5466 in the mass range $0.3

Estimates of the mass distribution and dark-matter (DM) content of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are usually derived under the assumption that the effect of the tidal field of the host galaxy is negligible over the radial extent probed by kinematic data-sets. We assess the implications of this assumption in the specific case of the Fornax dSph by means of N-body simulations of a satellite orbiting around the Milky Way. We consider observationally-motivated orbits and we tailor the initial distributions of the satellite's stars and DM to match, at the end of the simulations, the observed structure and kinematics of Fornax. In all our simulations the present-day observable properties of Fornax are not significantly influenced by tidal effects. The DM component is altered by the interaction with the Galactic field (up to 20% of the DM mass within 1.6 kpc is lost), but the structure and kinematics of the stellar component are only mildly affected even in the more eccentric orbit (more than 99% of the stellar particles remain bound to the dwarf). In the simulations that successfully reproduce Fornax's observables, the dark-to-luminous mass ratio within 1.6 kpc is in the range 5-6, and up to 16-18 if measured within 3 kpc., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures. The discovery of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters has implications for all the aspects of the study of these stellar systems. In this paper, by means of N-body simulations, we study the evolution of binary stars in multiple-population clusters and explore the implications of the initial differences in the spatial distribution of different stellar populations for the evolution and survival of their binary stars. Our simulations show that initial differences between the spatial distribution of first-generation (FG) and second-generation (SG) stars can leave a fingerprint in the current properties of the binary population. SG binaries are disrupted more efficiently than those of the FG population resulting in a global SG binary fraction smaller than that of the FG. As for surviving binaries, dynamical evolution produces a difference between the SG and the FG binary binding energy distribution with the SG population characterized by a larger fraction of high binding energy (more bound) binaries. We have also studied the dependence of the binary properties on the distance from the cluster centre. Although the global binary fraction decreases more rapidly for the SG population, the local binary fraction measured in the cluster inner regions may still be dominated by SG binaries. The extent of the differences between the surviving FG and SG binary binding energy distribution also varies radially within the cluster and is larger in the cluster inner regions., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures. We have serendipitously identified the first lithium-rich giant star located close to the red giant branch bump in a globular cluster. Through intermediate-resolution FLAMES spectra we derived a lithium abundance of A(Li)=2.55 (assuming local thermodynamical equilibrium), which is extremely high considering the star's evolutionary stage. Kinematic and photometric analysis confirm the object as a member of the globular cluster NGC 362. This is the fourth Li-rich giant discovered in a globular cluster but the only one known to exist at a luminosity close to the bump magnitude. The three previous detections are clearly more evolved, located close to, or beyond the tip of their red giant branch. Our observations are able to discard the accretion of planets/brown dwarfs, as well as an enhanced mass-loss mechanism as a formation channel for this rare object. Whilst the star sits just above the cluster bump luminosity, its temperature places it towards the blue side of the giant branch in the colour-magnitude diagram. We require further dedicated observations to unambiguously identify the star as a red giant: we are currently unable to confirm whether Li production has occurred at the bump of the luminosity function or if the star is on the pre zero-age horizontal branch. The latter scenario provides the opportunity for the star to have synthesised Li rapidly during the core helium flash or gradually during its red giant branch ascent via some extra mixing process., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

In the hierarchical formation scenario in which the outer halo of the Milky Way is the result of the continuous accretion of low-mass galaxies, a fraction of the Galactic globular cluster system might have originated in and been accreted with already extinct dwarf galaxies. In this context, we expect that the remnants of these progenitor galaxies might be still populating the surroundings of those accreted globulars. In this work, we present wide-field photometry of a sample of 23 globular clusters in the Galactocentric distance range 10 < Rg < 40kpc, which we use to search for remnants of their hypothetical progenitor systems. Our deep photometry reveals the presence of underlying stellar populations along the line-of-sight of about half of the globulars included in our sample. Among the detections lying in the footprint of the Sagittarius tidal stream, which we identify via the comparison with its orbit derived from numerical simulations, only Whiting1 and NGC7492 seem to be inmersed in that remnant at a compatible heliocentric distance. We also confirm the existence of a subjacent Main-Sequence feature in the surroundings of NGC1851. Massive globular clusters (GCs) contain at least two generations of stars with slightly different ages and clearly distinct light elements abundances. The Na-O anticorrelation is the best studied chemical signature of multiple stellar generations. Low-mass clusters appear instead to be usually chemically homogeneous. We are investigating low-mass GCs to understand what is the lower mass limit where multiple populations can form, mainly using the Na and O abundance distribution. We used VLT/FLAMES spectra of giants in the low-mass, metal-poor GC Terzan 8, belonging to the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, to determine abundances of Fe, O, Na, alpha-, Fe-peak, and neutron-capture elements in six stars observed with UVES and 14 observed with GIRAFFE. The average metallicity is [Fe/H]=-2.27+/-0.03 (rms=0.08), based on the six high-resolution UVES spectra. Only one star, observed with GIRAFFE, shows an enhanced abundance of Na and we tentatively assign it to the second generation. In this cluster, at variance with what happens in more massive GCs, the second generation seems to represent at most a small minority fraction. Two independent studies recently uncovered two distinct populations among giants in the distant, massive globular cluster (GC) NGC 2419. One of these populations has normal magnesium (Mg) and potassium (K) abundances for halo stars: enhanced Mg and roughly solar K. The other population has extremely depleted Mg and very enhanced K. To better anchor the peculiar NGC 2419 chemical composition, we have investigated the behavior of K in a few red giant branch stars in NGC 6752, NGC 6121, NGC 1904, and omega Cen. To verify that the high K abundances are intrinsic and not due to some atmospheric features in giants, we also derived K abundances in less evolved turn-off and subgiant stars of clusters 47 Tuc, NGC 6752, NGC 6397, and NGC 7099. We normalized the K abundance as a function of the cluster metallicity using 21 field stars analyzed in a homogeneous manner. For all GCs of our sample, the stars lie in the K-Mg abundance plane on the same locus occupied by the Mg-normal population in NGC 2419 and by field stars. This holds both for giants and less evolved stars. We use recently published measurements of the kinematics, surface brightness and stellar mass-to-light ratio of the globular cluster NGC 2419 to examine the possibility that this Galactic halo satellite is embedded in a low-mass dark matter halo. NGC 2419 is a promising target for such a study, since its extreme Galactocentric distance and large mass would have greatly facilitated the retention of dark matter. A Markov-Chain Monte Carlo approach is used to investigate composite dynamical models containing a stellar and a dark matter component. We find that it is unlikely that a significant amount of dark matter (less than approx. 6% of the luminous mass inside the tidal limit of the cluster) can be present if the stars follow an anisotropic Michie model and the dark matter a double power law model. However, we find that more general models, derived using a new technique we have developed to compute non-parametric solutions to the spherical Jeans equation, suggest the presence of a significant dark matter fraction (approximately twice the stellar mass). Thus the presence of a dark matter halo around NGC 2419 cannot be fully ruled out at present, yet any dark matter within the 10 arcmin visible extent of the cluster must be highly concentrated and cannot exceed 1.1x10^6 Solar masses (99% confidence), in stark contrast to expectations for a plausible progenitor halo of this structure., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted in MNRAS

Using HST/WFPC2 data, we have performed a comparative study of the Blue Straggler Star (BSS) populations in the central regions of the globular clusters AM 1, Eridanus, Palomar 3, and Palomar 4. Located at distances RGC > 50 kpc from the Galactic Centre, these are (together with Palomar 14 and NGC 2419) the most distant clusters in the Halo. We determine their colour-magnitude diagrams and centres of gravity. The four clusters turn out to have similar ages (10.5-11 Gyr), significantly smaller than those of the inner-Halo globulars, and similar metallicities. By exploiting wide field ground based data, we build the most extended radial density profiles from resolved star counts ever published for these systems. These are well reproduced by isotropic King models of relatively low concentration. BSSs appear to be significantly more centrally segregated than red giants in all globular clusters, in agreement with the estimated core and half-mass relaxation times which are smaller than the cluster ages. Assuming that this is a signature of mass segregation, we conclude that AM 1 and Eridanus are slightly dynamically more evolved than Pal 3 and Pal 4., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, references updated

We present an analysis of the globular cluster NGC 2419, using a polytropic model in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) to reproduce recently published high quality data of the structure and kinematics of the system. We show that a specific MOND polytropic model of NGC 2419 suggested by a previous study can be completely ruled out by the data. Furthermore, the highest likelihood fit polytrope in MOND is a substantially worse model (by a factor of approximately 5000) than a Newtonian Michie model studied in an earlier contribution by Ibata et al. (2011). We conclude that the structure and dynamics of NGC 2419 favor Newtonian dynamics and do indeed challenge the MOND theory., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Using deep photometric data from WFC@INT and WFI@ESO2.2m we measure the outer number density profiles of 19 stellar clusters located in the inner region of the Milky Way halo (within a Galactocentric distance range of 10-30 kpc) in order to assess the impact of internal and external dynamical processes on the spatial distribution of stars. Adopting power-law fitting templates, with index $-\gamma$ in the outer region, we find that the clusters in our sample can be divided in two groups: a group of massive clusters ($ \ge 10^5 $ M_sun) that has relatively flat profiles with $2.5 < \gamma < 4$ and a group of low-mass clusters ($ \le 10^5 $ M_sun), with steep profiles ($\gamma > 4$) and clear signatures of interaction with the Galactic tidal field. We refer to these two groups as 'tidally unaffected' and 'tidally affected', respectively. Our results also show a clear trend between the slope of the outer parts and the half-mass density of these systems, which suggests that the outer density profiles may retain key information on the dominant processes driving the dynamical evolution of Globular Clusters., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We used deep wide-field observations obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to study the blue straggler star (BSS) population in the innermost five arcminutes of the remote Galactic globular cluster Palomar 14. The BSS radial distribution is found to be consistent with that of the normal cluster stars, showing no evidence of central segregation. Palomar 14 is the third system in the Galaxy (in addition to OmegaCentauri and NGC 2419) showing a population of BSS not centrally segregated. This is the most direct evidence that in Palomar 14 two-body relaxation has not fully established energy equipartition yet, even in the central regions (in agreement with the estimated half-mass relaxation time, which is significantly larger than the cluster age).
