To replicate in a new host, lentiviruses must adapt to exploit required host factors and evade species-specific antiviral proteins. Understanding how host protein variation drives lentivirus adaptation allowed us to expand the host range of HIV-1 to pigtail macaques. We have previously derived a viral swarm (in the blood of infected animals) that can cause AIDS in this new host. To further exploit this reagent, we generated infectious molecular clones (IMCs) from the viral swarm. We identified clones with high replicative capacity in pigtail peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in vitro and used in vivo replication to select an individual IMC, named stHIV-A19 (for simian tropic HIV-1 clone A19), which recapitulated the phenotype obtained with the viral swarm. Adaptation of HIV-1 in macaques led to the acquisition of amino acid changes in viral proteins, such as capsid (CA), that are rarely seen in HIV-1-infected humans. Using stHIV-A19, we show that these CA changes confer a partial resistance to the host cell inhibitor Mx2 from pigtail macaques, but that complete resistance is associated with a fitness defect. As cancers with a high incidence rate, colorectal cancers are a main cause of cancer-related death. MicroRNAs are often deregulated in cancers. The primate-specific miR-944, located in a p63 intron, is known to be highly expressed in patients exhibiting low colorectal cancer recurrence rates. However, the biological functions of miR-944 in colorectal cancers remain unclear. In this study, we found that miR-944 was downregulated in colorectal cancer tissues, and inhibited cancer cell growth in a xenograft mouse model. The overexpression of miR-944 caused G1 phase arrest and increased p53 expression in cancer cells. p53 stability was enhanced by miR-944s targeting E3 ligases COP1 and MDM2. Overexpression of COP1 and MDM2 restored cell growth inhibition caused by miR-944. Taken together, our results suggest that miR-944 acts as a potential tumor suppressor in colorectal cancers through the ubiquitin-proteasome system., (Copyright © 2018. Published by Elsevier B.V.)

The superior physical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have led to their broad application. Intrinsically, CNTs tend to agglomerate from hydrophobic interactions, which is highly undesirable for solution processing and device fabrication. Commonly, a stabilizer consisting of organic surfactants or polymers is used to disperse CNTs. Recently, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon hollow nanospheres (25-90 nm), termed carbon "nanobubbles". They bear superior dispersability in water and distinctive graphitic order. Herein, we describe the nanobubble-assisted dispersion of CNTs in aqueous solution upon sonication. This process relies on the π-π interaction between the two aromatic carbon nanostructures, which can process their carbon mixture in water into conductive filter membranes, ink, and discs. This stabilization can be extended to other aromatic carbons. Dispersible, highly graphitic, and nitrogen-doped carbon hollow nanospheres (25-90 nm), termed 'nanobubbles', are prepared via confined carbonization through a silica nanocasting technique. Poly(ionic liquid) nanoparticles are employed as easy-to-make and multifunctional templates, which simultaneously act as both the carbon and nitrogen source. A unique copolymer stabilizer is presented that can be used to stabilize multiwalled carbon nanotubes in aqueous solution to form "smart" dispersions. They showed double stimuli-responsive behavior (in dependence of temperature and ionic strength) and allowed for accurate control of the transition (exfoliated → agglomerated) temperature of nanotubes over a wide temperature range. In spite of its effective dispersion strength, the copolymer was easily synthesized in one step via free radical copolymerization of N -isopropylacrylamide and 1-ethyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide.

This paper reports on the highly ordered and tunable inner structure of poly(ionic liquid) nanoparticles, which formed spontaneously by precipitation polymerization from water. Without added stabilizer, these "latexes" are much smaller (20-40 nm in diameter) than usual polymer latexes and exhibit either multilamellar or unilamellar vesicular morphology, depending on the tail length of the quaternizing alkyl chains. The simplicity in the synthesis and composition and the high complexity of the ordered structures that resemble liposomes expand the classical profile of homopolymer self-assembly. In addition, unidirectional superassembly to a nanoworm mesostructure is found at elevated concentrations, indicating that the ionic liquid liposomes are apt to integrate into further hierarchical assembly schemes.

A 61-year-old woman had gradual onset of ptosis and painless proptosis of her left eye of 1-year duration. Orbital computed tomography (CT) showed a well-circumscribed superior nasal orbital tumor with uniform density. The mass was removed by anterior orbitotomy and histopathologically diagnosed as a conjunctival cyst. Recent reports have increased awareness of this entity. This case typifies findings of conjunctival orbital cysts. These cysts should be considered when a differential diagnosis is formulated for orbital tumors with a similar presentation.

This is the first known report of a relatively large postoperative pyogenic granuloma developing after a nonsutured transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Inflammation and separation or malapposition of the conjunctival wound edges probably permitted the lesion to proliferate in the inferior fornix. No foreign material could be implicated because no suture was used to close this incision. Additionally, Polydek suture material (braided polyester fiber) was associated with the complication of a suture tract and granuloma when used for a tarsal suspension procedure for ectropion repair in this patient.
