Abstract

AbstractThe effect of iron absorption on yield and composition of the oil of Rosmarinus officinalisL. (Lamiaceae) growing in calcareous soil in the North of Sardinia is reported. The plant material was obtained from two different chemotypes of R. officinaliswhose oils were rich in α-pinene (sample A) and 1,8-cineole (sample B) respectively. The effect of foliar iron sprays was investigated in irrigated and non-irrigated plants. During the period of the study, May-November 1995, iron absorption did not produce any significant increase in oil yield but appeared to cause a marked rise in verbenone concentration in the oil of irrigated plants. This is likely to be the result of intensified metabolic oxidative processes which convert α-pinene into verbenyl derivatives. The higher concentrations of verbenone in R. officinalisoil after iron treatment increase its value for the perfume industry

Abstract

AbstractThe effects of soil on the yield and characteristics of the oil of Rosmarinus officinalisgrown in two different areas of Sardinia were investigated. The starting plant material was obtained from cuttings of R. officinalisgrowing spontaneously on granitic silt soil (Northern Gallura). Cuttings were divided into two homogeneous groups and planted in two different kinds of soil: one predominantly silt with granite and the other with a highly calcareous content (Sassari). The different character of the soil had a significant effect on the yield and composition of the oil. Plants grown in granitic silt soil appeared more luxuriant and had a more intense aroma than those grown in calcareous soil which, on the contrary, showed evident signs of chlorosis. The main difference in the composition of the oil was a higher percentage of oxygenated components in plants grown in calcareous soil. The main constituent of the oxygenated fraction was 1,8-cineole, reaching up to 31% in samples from rosemary grown on calcareous soil. This is particularly surprising since the oil obtained from R. officinalis, which grows naturally in calcareous soil, usually contains markedly lower levels of 1,8-cineole than oil from plants grown in granitic silt. The high content of 1,8-cineole found in the oil of rosemary grown on calcareous soil could be due to selective adaptation to conditions markedly different from the environment in which the plant originated.

32. Le Terre brune della Gallura

Abstract

The brown soils of Gallura have been developed chiefly on granites whose formation dates back to Ercinic Orogenesis. These soils are characterized by little deep profiles, generally lower than 50 cm, well drained mainly because of small day contcnts (7.83 - 15.35%). The day distribution along the profile is rather uniform. The permanent charge of the inorganic colloidal fraction oscillates between 20 and 40 meq/100g, while the pH dependent charge is frequently higher than the permanent charge. The exchange complex of soil is chiefly calcium saturated. The base saturation percentage is rather low, varying between 0.30 and 0.58, but remains pratically constant along the profile; the small differences between the two horizons could be explained on the basis of the soils' sampling time rather than the basic cations leaching. Leached brown soils are also present in Gallura, but they very scarce. The organic matter of the soils rarely overcomes 7%, in the superficial horizons and decreases to values usually below the 3%. In the more typical brown soils the C/N ratio is below 14. The optical properties, the potentiometric and conductometric curves reveal a dose resemblance between the humic acids of these soils and those of Campeda andosoils.

Abstract

A method is described for the separation by HPLC of two isomer phenols thymol and carvacrol. Satisfactory resu1ts have been obtained by using a chromatographic column μ Bondapak ,C18 and a solvent system constitued by acetonitrile (40%) and water (60%). The flow rate was 1,5 ml/min. The use of this technique permits determination and dosage of these two phenols in essential oils.

34. Electrochemical properties of Fe and Al hydroxides as affected by different supporting electrolytes

Abstract

Potentiometric titration curves of Fe and Al hydroxides, carried out in presence of different electrolytes (KCI, Kbr, KI, KNO3, KCIO4) were elaborated by the Stern theory through a computered program. The zero points of charge (zpc), calculated from the intersection point of the titration curves at different ionic strenght, varied from pH 7.10 to pH 7.65 for Fe hydroxides and from pH 9.10 pH 9.45 for Al hydroxi des. For Fe compounds, a good match was found between the experimental values and those calculated by the Stern model. High deviations were observed only with KCIO4, in whose presence a lowering of the zpc was registered. Also in Al hydroxides the proposed model was not reliable below zpc, indicating that the surface interac tions are somewhat involved in specific adsorption phenomena.

Abstract

Four different extraction methods were compard, in oder to optimize the HPLC separation and quantitation of hydroxyphenols in «Thymus capitatus». One method was not suitable for HPLC ansly,is, whereas the others partially destroyed the hydroxyphenols extracted from the plant. The Charpentier-Cowles me thod was, found the most effective allowing to analyse, in spite of the losses, most of the free phenolic acids and of those bounded extractable in hot acidic medium but not in ethanol. For the phenolics in free form a method whith recoverier greater than those obtained with Hagerman Nicholson and Horvat-Senter methods was developed.
