Nuestra propuesta se centra en la caracterización de los espacios asistenciales que se configuraron en los altos valles pirenaicos en el paso de la Antigüedad a la Edad Media. En este proceso tenemos en cuenta tres tipos de instalaciones: los balnearios de tradición romana, los hospitales documentados para la Edad Media y los santuarios marianos, de origen incierto, en los que suele tener una cierta importancia la pervivencia de cultos precristianos. El vínculo que hemos establecido entre estos tres elementos nos permite dibujar unes áreas de asistencia (AA), ubicadas en puntos estratégicos de las vías de comunicación y relacionadas, también, con los espacios ganaderos de alta montaña. La cartografía que generamos, a partir de herramientas GIS, pone de relieve un cierto patrón geográfico en la ubicación de estas áreas y de las instalaciones que las caracterizan y nos muestra la continuidad de estos espacios desde la antigüedad. Al mismo tiempo, relacionamos estas áreas de asistencia con actividades productivas de alta montaña y no exclusivamente con el paso de viajeros como a menudo se nos ha querido mostrar., Our proposal focuses on the characterisation of the ‘areas of assistance’ (AA) that developed in the high Pyrenean valleys during the passage from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. In this process, we take into account three types of facilities: baths with a Roman tradition, hospitals documented for the Middle Ages and Marian sanctuaries, of uncertain origin, where the survival of pre‐Christian cults is usually of some importance. The link that we have established between these three elements allows us to draw up a series of areas of assistance, located at strategic points on the roads and also related to the high mountain animal husbandry. The cartography that we generate, using GIS tools, highlights a certain geographical pattern in the location of these areas and in the facilities that characterise them, and shows the continuity of these spaces since antiquity. Aquest estudi té com a objectiu analitzar la progressió de l’espai agrari del comtat de Barcelona entre els segles ix i xii, fent ús d’eines de georeferenciació (GIS) capaces de representar sobre una mateixa cartografia digital la informació localitzada a les fonts. A través de l’anàlisi de la diversitat i ubicació de les espècies cultivades podrem acostar-nos no només a les transformacions derivades del procés de feudalització, sinó també als espais d’especialització productiva relacionats amb la progressiva consolidació dels mercats rurals. Tot plegat, amb l’objectiu de copsar l’impacte de l’extensió dels cultius en la dieta alimentària dels pobladors d’aquest territori., This study looks at the progression of cultivated land in the County of Barcelona between the ninth and twelfth centuries, using georeferencing tools (GIS) to represent information from various sources on the same digital map. Analysis of the diversity and location of cultivated species reveals not only the transformations derived from the Feudalization process, but also the areas of productive specialization related to the progressive consolidation of rural markets. The final objective is to develop an understanding of the impact of the expansion of crop production on the diet of the people who lived in this territory.

This paper explores the urban and spatial changes that occurred in the city of Naples between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, which were mainly due to religious institutions. The study of edited sources and the innovative georeferencing of each monastery reveals the image of a city where the living space within the walls was very limited in contrast to the absolute preponderance of religious orders. Il saggio indaga i cambiamenti urbanistici e spaziali che si verificarono nella città di Napoli tra il XII e il XV secolo dovuti principalmente agli enti religiosi. Attraverso lo studio delle fonti edite e l’approccio innovativo della georeferenziazione di ciascun monastero emerge l’immagine di una città in cui lo spazio vitale, all’interno delle mura, per la popolazione era veramente esiguo ed il peso degli ordini religiosi era assolutamente preponderante rispetto all’estendersi dell’abitato.

This paper aims to present two projects carried out within the Digital Humanities field and related to the study of medieval feminine spirituality: the Atlas CLAUSTRA and the SPIRITUAL LANDSCAPES project. Both headed by the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with researchers at a large number of internationally renowned universities and research centres, they aim to study the medieval spiritual landscapes. The first does so through the creation of an Atlas and Catalogue of female spirituality spaces in Mediterranean Europe between the 11th and 16th centuries, and the second, through the study of the territorial impact of the foundation of monasteries on rural and urban landscapes during the Middle Ages. All this is based on the design, implementation and development of two powerful digital platforms that constitute a shared work space, scientific study tool, and instrument for the dissemination of the knowledge gained through the research.

Amb l’objectiu de millorar el nostre coneixement sobre el paper dels mercats en el procés de gènesi i consolidació del feudalisme, aquest treball analitza l’origen de la xarxa d’intercanvis desenvolupada al territori del Penedès entre els segles IX i XII. L’estudi integrat de fonts documentals, arqueològiques i territorials, i la utilització dels Sistemes d’Informació Geogràfica (GIS) en la representació i anàlisi de les dades, permet acostar-nos al procés d’articulació de la xarxa de mercats medieval. L’encontre comercial més antic del Penedès feudal fou el de la Granada, celebrat sobre el traçat de la Via Augusta. A partir del segle XII la seva ascendència va veure’s eclipsada per l’aparició del mercat i fira de Vilafranca del Penedès, que ben aviat es convertirà en el mercat més important d’aquest territori. L’estudi de les motivacions polítiques i econòmiques que ocasionaren aquest canvi de jerarquia ens ajuden a entendre la lògica territorial i comercial del feudalisme. Assistim al procés de creació d’una xarxa de mercats sòlida i ben articulada, liderada per Vilafranca de Penedès i reforçada, a partir del segle XIII, per la institució de nous mercats i fires capaços d’abastir, amb el seu radi d’influència, tot el territori penedesenc., With the aim of improving our knowledge about the role of markets in the process of genesis and consolidation of feudalism, this paper analyses the origin of the network of exchanges that was developed in the Penedès region between the 9th and the 12th century. The integrated study of documentary, archaeological, and territorial sources, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the representation and analysis of data, allow us to approach the process of interaction of the network of medieval markets. The oldest commercial gathering of the Penedès region was the one held in La Granada, located along the axis of the Via Augusta. From the 12th century onwards, the importance of this market was overshadowed by the emergence of the market and fair of Vilafranca, which soon became the most important market in the area. The study of the political and economic motivations that caused this change in the hierarchy helps us understand the territorial and commercial logic of feudalism. We are looking at a strong and well articulated market network, led by Vilafranca del Penedès and reinforced, from the thirteenth century on, by the foundation of new markets and fairs able to supply, with their radius of influence, the entire territory of Penedès.

On the basis of a holistic idea of landscape, this paper presents cataloguing, mapping and georeferencing as methodological tools for achieving a comprehensive and gendered study of the spaces of female spirituality in the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. Our goal is to represent the territorial distribution of spiritual spaces documented in the sources through both relational databases and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The resulting historical maps, related here to the Catalan case study, will became a source useful not only for discerning the distribution pattern of the monastic centres of each order but also a tool for understanding existing relationships between those centres and their immediate or distant environments, They also pose new questions and hypotheses and open new horizons of analysis. Partiendo del concepto holístico de paisaje, este artículo es una aproximación metodológica a las potencialidades ofrecidas por la catalogación, cartografía y geoposicionamiento de los espacios de espiritualidad femenina de los Reinos Peninsulares para el estudio de los mismos de una forma integrada y sexuada al mismo tiempo. Ya sea mediante bases de datos relacionales o bien mediante los Sistemas de Información Geográfi ca (SIG), se busca una representación sobre el territorio de la distribución de los espacios de espiritualidad conocidos a través de las fuentes. Las cartografías históricas resultantes de este proceso, relacionadas aquí con el caso de estudio de Cataluña, se convertirán no sólo en una fuente elaborada para conocer la distribución de los centros monásticos de cada orden, sino también en una herramienta de conocimiento de las relaciones existentes tanto entre centros, como entre éstos y el territorio inmediato o más lejano, así como en un dispositivo que abre nuevas preguntas, nuevas hipótesis y nuevos horizontes de análisis.

Durante nueve años se desarrolló un estudio sobre colonización de especies de plantas foráneas en ambientes naturales y seminaturales en el término municipal de Abrera, un área de 19,89 km2 situada en el nordeste de la Península Ibérica (41º 31'N, 1º 55'E). Los datos sobre frugivoría por especies de vertebrados, síndromes de dispersión de semillas (por animales, viento y agua), así como también los datos históricos sobre la introducción de especies de plantas fueron comparados con sus éxitos de colonización. La mayoría de las especies de plantas alóctonas (n=33) fueron primariamente dispersadas por animales (zoocoria: 88%), seguidas por el agua (hidrocoria: 9%) y el viento (anemocoria: 3%). Los principales diseminadores de especies de plantas alóctonas fueron aves y mamíferos frugívoros que transportaron semillas enteras en el interior de sus aparatos digestivos (endozoocoria), tales como el mirlo común (Turdus merula), el estornino pinto (Sturnus vulgaris), el colirrojo tizón (Phoenicurus ochruros), la curruca capirotada (Sylvia atricapilla), el petirrojo (Erithacus rubecula) y el zorro (Vulpes vulpes). Las principales especies de plantas alóctonas colonizadoras en zonas de bosques nativos fueron: Celtis australis y Ligustrum lucidum, y en formaciones vegetales de tipo abierto y semiabierto: Ailanthus altissima, Prunus dulcis y Agave americana. Robinia pseudacacia y Olea europaea colonizaron tanto zonas boscosas como de vegetación abierta. Atribuimos el escaso éxito de colonización de especies de plantas alóctonas, especialmente aquellas que producen frutos carnosos, en ambientes abiertos a: a- el estrés climático (sequedad y heladas); b- los incendios producidos por el hombre y las actividades extensivas de pastoreo desarrolladas en los últimos 2500 años. El éxito de colonización de estas especies de plantas en el área de estudio no se relaciona directamente con su tiempo de introducción. No obstante, la agricultura ancestral y el largo proceso de transformación ambiental a que el área estuvo sujeta (ej.: sucesivos episodios de deforestaciones masivas), podrían haber facilitado también la colonización de diversas especies de plantas foráneas, especialmente aquellas que tienden a ser invasoras. A nine-year study on alien plant colonization in natural and semi-natural environments was performed in the municipality of Abrera, a 19.89 km2 area located in northeastern Iberian Peninsula (41º 31'N, 1º 55'E). Frugivory by vertebrate species, seed dispersal syndromes (by animals, wind and water) and historical data on the introduction of plant species were compared with their colonization success. Most of the alien plant species (n=33) were primarily dispersed by animals (zoochory: 88%), followed by water (hydrochory: 9%), and wind (anemochory: 3%). The main dispersers of alien plant species were frugivorous birds and mammals that transported whole seeds in the gut (endozoochory), such as the blackbird (Turdus merula), starling (Sturnus vulgaris), black redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros), blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla), robin (Erithacus rubecula), and the red fox (Vulpes vulpes). The main alien species colonizing native forests were: Celtis australis and Ligustrum lucidum, and in open and semi-open formations: Ailanthus altissima, Prunus dulcis and Agave americana. Robinia pseudacacia and Olea europaea colonized both forest and open formations. We attribute the low colonization success of alien plant species, especially fleshy fruiting plants, in open areas to: a- climatic stresses (drought and frost); b- human-induced fires and extensive grazing activities during the last 2500 years. Colonization success of such species in the study area was considered not to be related to time of introduction by man. Nevertheless, ancient agriculture and environmental transformation (e.g. successive episodes of massive deforestation) could have also facilitated the colonization of several plant species, especially those that tend to be invasive.

ESPAÑOL: De un tiempo a esta parte, la cartografía histórica se ha revindicado como una herramienta muy eficiente para aproximarnos a las instituciones pretéritas desde un punto de vista holístico, situándolas en su contexto espaciotemporal y relacionándolas con el paisaje circundante. En el presente artículo, se aplica este planteamiento metodológico al estudio de las comunidades de clarisas catalanas entre los siglos XIII y XVI, definiendo los patrones de asentamiento y de relación con el territorio inmediato que se observan en los diecisiete conventos analizados. Nuestro objetivo ha consistido en poner de manifiesto la existencia de unos modelos de comportamiento repetitivos e invitar a la reflexión sobre sus posibles causas. Tales planteamientos podrán ser posteriormente discutidos para cada una de las comunidades en sendos estudios de caso. / ENGLISH: For some time, historical cartography has been proved to be a very efficient tool for investigating ancient institutions in a holistic way. It allows their analysis by putting them in their spatiotemporal context and connecting them with their surroundings. Our paper uses this methodological approach to study the communities of Poor Clares in Catalonia between the 13th and 16th centuries. We analyse the locations of those seventeen monasteries that belonged to this religious order, with the intention to establish their settlement patterns and the different landscape features that appear in each case. Our goal is both to highlight the existence of some repetitive patterns in the location of these spiritual spaces and to foster further discussion about the reasons behind the choice of these locations.
