Abstract

Las costras físicas (CFS) y biológicas (CBS) del suelo ocupan una gran extensión en zonas áridas y semiáridas de todo el mundo. En estos medios, el encostramiento del suelo tiene una gran influencia sobre los procesos hidrológicos y erosivos. Los objetivos que se persiguen en este trabajo son: analizar las características de las costras que influyen en la infiltración y en la erosión e identificar cuáles de estas características tiene una mayor influencia sobre estos procesos. En dos áreas semiáridas representativas en la provincia de Almería se identificaron los principales tipos de costras físicas y biológicas. Para cada tipo de costra, se analizaron las características físicas y químicas de la propia costra y del material subyacente, así como su rugosidad, hidrofobia, resistencia a la penetración y cobertura de diferentes comunidades de organismos. Para analizar la influencia de las costras sobre la infiltración y la erosión, se llevaron a cabo simulaciones de lluvia en parcelas con la costra intacta y para examinar los efectos de las características del material subyacente a la costra, los experimentos de simulación de lluvia se realizaron tras retirar la costra. La respuesta hidrológica de las áreas encostradas estudiadas se ve afectada no solo por las características de la costra, sino también por las características del suelo sobre el que se desarrollan estas costras y especialmente por la pendiente que aparece como una variable altamente predictiva para la infiltración y la erosión. Entre las características del material subyacente, resalta la influencia de la textura, el contenido en carbono orgánico y la conductividad eléctrica, y entre las características de la costra, la cobertura y rugosidad son las variables más predictivas que explican las diferencias en las tasas de infiltración y erosión entre ambos sitios.

Abstract

Between 2013 and 2014, a network funded by MISTRALS-ENVIMED institution, was born around some instrumented catchments developing a badland-type morphology. This network has grouped 3 countries (France, Spain and Italy) with 12 scientific labs. RESOBAM has concerned two sites in France (Draix-Ble?one and Vaches Noires), three in Spain (Vallcebre, Araguas and El Cautivo) and some sites in Italy (Tuscany, Basilicata). Main goal of this network was to federate the research around badlands at the European scale, by proposing some scientific topics as: sediment and water transports / budget, (bio)geochemical cycles, agricultural (farming), education, restoration, cultural heritage, soil conservation / biodiversity, climatic change etc. Other main interests were also to propose some common scientific projects and the development of students exchanges. This communication presents the synthesis of our four meetings held at Draix, Zaragoza, Almeria? and Rouen and some perspectives to continue this network.

29. Influences of micro-relief patterns and plant cover on runoff related processes in badlands from Tabernas (SE Spain)

Abstract

Soil surface morphology, soil thickness and their evolution strongly affect infiltration processes. Badland surfaces are characterised by a substantially low plant cover and a reduced soil development controlled by high erosion rates. In the badlands of Tabernas (Almeri´a, SE Spain), the soil surface morphology exhibits a marked spatial variability, caused by different processes under moisture and temperature alternations in different slope aspects. Previous studies on the area have revealed. the different hydrologic behaviour of North- and South-facing surfaces. In this paper, we go into more detail trying to establish the influences of both micro-relief patterns and plant cover on the hydrological behaviour of sixteen representative soil surfaces from the badlands of Tabernas. Rain simulations at a constant intensity of 55 mm/h have been carried out on 16 circular plots of 0.24 m 2 , during 30 min, to evaluate runoff, infiltration, and sediment production parameters. Surface morphology has been evaluated by image analysis of photographs, before and after the simulations the following parameters have been considered: plant cover and type, length and width of cracks, and stoniness. Surface roughness was determined with a laser profile meter. Runoff and erosion responses have been gathered in three and four groups, respectively, which are related to differences in slope gradient, soil depth and surface morphology. Runoff is positively correlated with slope gradient and negatively correlated with plant cover and total cover. Erosion is negatively correlated with lichen cover, with non-cryptogamic plant cover, with total cover and with surface area occupied by cracks. In some aspects, Tabernas badlands have an hydrological behaviour similar to other badlands described elsewhere (i.e., shallow moisture penetration, short times to runoff, different responses in runoff). However, they are particular in the following: (a) apparent morphological stability after rainfall events of high magnitude and intensity, along with high sediment production associated either from micro-rills that follow open cracks in the regolith, or from overland flow on bare, crusted, silty surfaces; (b) runoff enhancement by surface roughness through the channelling effect of the sealed depressions among pedestals and mounds of crustose lichens.

Abstract

Physical soil crusts and biological soil crusts occupy a wide extension in arid and semiarid areas all over the world. In these regions, soil crusting has a very strong influence on local hydrologic regimes and erosion. The main purposes of this paper are: 1) to examine how crust characteristics influence infiltration and erosion and 2) to identify the most influential crust characteristics on runoff and erosion processes. Two semiarid areas in the province of Almería were chosen and the most representative physical and biological soil crusts were identified at both sites. For each crust type, physical and chemical characteristics of the crust and the soil underneath the crust were analysed, as well as other crust properties like roughness, hydrophobicity, resistance to penetration and cover. To analyse the influence of the crust on infiltration and erosion, rainfall simulations were conducted on plots with the intact crust, and in order to examine the influence of the soil underlying the crust, rainfall simulations were conducted on plots after removing the crust. The hydrological response of the studied encrusted areas is affected, not only by the characteristics of the crust itself, but also by the characteristics of the soil in where the crust is developed and specially by the slope gradient that appears like a highly predictive variable for infiltration and erosion. Abstract

Soil erosion in southeast Spain is a complex process due to strong interactions between biophysical and human components. Significant progress has been achieved in the understanding of soil hydrological behavior, despite the fact that most investigations were focused on the experimental plot scale. Although experimental plots allow exploring the effect of multiple biophysical and anthropogenic factors, they provide limited insights in the combined effect of all factors acting together at the landscape scale. In this study, area-specific sediment yields (SSY) have been estimated based on the volume of sediment trapped behind 36 check dams in the southeast of Spain. Low SSY-values were reported (mean = 1.40 t ha(-1) year(-1): median = 0.61 t ha(-1) year(-1)), SSY variability could be explained for 67% by catchment characteristics such as drainage area, soil characteristics, land cover, average catchment slope, and annual rainfall. The low SSY values are probably caused by the agricultural abandonment that occurred over the past decades and allowed the recovery of natural vegetation. Furthermore, our results suggest that the soils have eroded in the past to such an extent that nowadays not much sediment is detached by overland flow due to residual enrichment of clay and stones. Also, sediment is to a large extent trapped locally in the catchment, as indicated by the negative relationship between SSY and catchment area. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

32. Runoff as an additional water resource in a semiarid karstic aquifer

Abstract

In a semi-arid limestone area, finding additional water resources is a priority. Moreover in the Sierra de Gador-Campo de Dalias, the local economy is booming and mainly based on groundwater resources. In common with other semi-arid to arid regions in particular along both sides of the Mediterranean are facing the same difficulties in balancing economic and natural resources. Aquifers are often overexploited and the demand is still growing. Hence, for sustainable development, water resources must be evaluated. Long term estimates are generally based on global assessment of diffuse recharge. This is somehow paradoxal as extreme events are recognized to preferentially recharge the aquifer. We show that the selectivity of deuterium excess to monthly precipitation volume allowed estimating the return period of precipitation leading to aquifer recharge at 0.9-4.9 years. Still moderate rainfall, which occurs more frequently, represents c. 60-90% of the total precipitation volume. This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of the groundwater recharge system with particular attention to runoff processes and a focus on runoff as a component of water balance in semi arid areas. Runoff is usually regarded as negligible in the recharge system of the semi-arid aquifers. Generally rare and discontinuous, the runoff process is difficult to monitor. The approach used is to first evaluate the main factors explaining the occurrence of runoff reaching the bottom of the hillslope for several representative sites in the study area (0.3-20 ha). It was demonstrated that runoff events depend on thresholds i.e. rainfall depth per event, the antecedent precipitation index over 20 days (API20) and soil surface characteristics. Then, a simple rainfall/runoff model was adapted and validated at the hillslope scale. The expert-based model allowed acceptable results for predicting runoff at this scale. Abstract

Este artículo contiene 16 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas., Soil degradation by water is a serious environmental problem worldwide, with specific climatic factors being the major causes. We investigated the relationships between synoptic atmospheric patterns (i.e. weather types, WTs) and runoff, erosion and sediment yield throughout the Mediterranean basin by analyzing a large database of natural rainfall events at 68 research sites in 9 countries. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify spatial relationships of the different WTs including three hydro-sedimentary variables: rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield (SY, used to refer to both soil erosion measured at plot scale and sediment yield registered at catchment scale). The results indicated 4 spatial classes of rainfall and runoff: (a) northern sites dependent on North (N) and North West (NW) flows; (b) eastern sites dependent on E and NE flows; (c) southern sites dependent on S and SE flows; and, finally, (d) western sites dependent on W and SW flows. Conversely, three spatial classes are identified for SY characterized by: (a) N and NE flows in northern sites (b) E flows in eastern sites, and (c) Wand SW flows in western sites. Most of the rainfall, runoff and SY occurred during a small number of daily events, and just a few WTs accounted for large percentages of the total. Our results confirm that characterization by WT improves understanding of the general conditions under which runoff and SY occur, and provides useful information for understanding the spatial variability of runoff, and SY throughout the Mediterranean basin. Abstract

Producción Científica, Rainfall is the key factor to understand soil erosion processes, mechanisms, and rates. Most research was conducted to determine rainfall characteristics and their relationship with soil erosion (erosivity) but there is little information about how atmospheric patterns control soil losses, and this is important to enable sustainable environmental planning and risk prevention. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability of the relationships of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield with atmospheric patterns (weather types, WTs) in the western Mediterranean basin. For this purpose, we analyzed a large database of rainfall events collected between 1985 and 2015 in 46 experimental plots and catchments with the aim to: (i) evaluate seasonal differences in the contribution of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield produced by the WTs; and (ii) to analyze the seasonal efficiency of the different WTs (relation frequency and magnitude) related to rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield. The results indicate two different temporal patterns: the first weather type exhibits (during the cold period: autumn and winter) westerly flows that produce the highest rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield values throughout the territory; the second weather type exhibits easterly flows that predominate during the warm period (spring and summer) and it is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, the cyclonic situations present high frequency throughout the whole year with a large influence extended around the western Mediterranean basin. Contrary, the anticyclonic situations, despite of its high frequency, do not contribute significantly to the total rainfall, runoff, and sediment (showing the lowest efficiency) because of atmospheric stability that currently characterize this atmospheric pattern.
