This paper deals with the imaging problem from data collected by means of a microwave photonics-based distributed radar network. The radar network is leveraged on a centralized architecture, which is composed of one central unit (CU) and two transmitting and receiving dual-band remote radar peripherals (RPs), it is capable of collecting monostatic and multistatic phase-coherent data. The imaging is herein formulated as a linear inverse scattering problem and solved in a regularized way through the truncated singular value decomposition inversion scheme. Specifically, two different imaging schemes based on an incoherent fusion of the tomographic images or a fully coherent data processing are herein developed and compared. In the context of sea state monitoring, reconstructing the wave field and estimating the sea state parameters from radar data is a challenging problem. To reach this goal, this paper proposes a fully data-driven, deep learning approach based on a convolutional neural network. The network takes as input the radar image spectrum and outputs the sea wave directional spectrum. After a 2D fast Fourier transform, the wave elevation field is reconstructed, and accordingly, the sea state parameters are estimated. The reconstruction strategy, herein presented, is tested using numerical data generated from a synthetic sea wave simulator, considering the spectral proprieties of the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project model. A performance analysis of the proposed deep-learning estimation strategy is carried out, along with a comparison to the classical modulation transfer function approach. The availability of multichannel ground-penetrating radar systems capable of gathering multiview, multistatic, multifrequency data provides novel chances to improve subsurface imaging results. However, customized data processing techniques and smart choices of the measurement setup are needed to find a trade-off between image quality and acquisition time. In this paper, we adopt a Born Approximation-based full 3D approach, which can manage multiview-multistatic, multifrequency data and faces the imaging as a linear inverse scattering problem. The inverse problem is solved by exploiting the truncated singular value decomposition as a regularization scheme. The paper presents a theoretical study aimed at assessing how the reconstruction capabilities of the imaging approach depend on the adopted measurement configuration. In detail, the performance achievable in the standard case of multimonostatic, multifrequency data is compared with that provided by a multiview-multistatic, multifrequency configuration, where the data are gathered by considering a progressively increasing number of transmitting antennas. The comparison of the achievable imaging performance is carried out by exploiting the spectral content and the point spread function, which are general tools to foresee the achievable reconstruction capabilities. We propose an artificial intelligence approach based on deep neural networks to tackle a canonical 2D scalar inverse source problem. The learned singular value decomposition (L-SVD) based on hybrid autoencoding is considered. We compare the reconstruction performance of L-SVD to the Truncated SVD (TSVD) regularized inversion, which is a canonical regularization scheme, to solve an ill-posed linear inverse problem. Numerical tests referring to far-field acquisitions show that L-SVD provides, with proper training on a well-organized dataset, superior performance in terms of reconstruction errors as compared to TSVD, allowing for the retrieval of faster spatial variations of the source. Indeed, L-SVD accommodates a priori information on the set of relevant unknown current distributions. Different from TSVD, which performs linear processing on a linear problem, L-SVD operates non-linearly on the data. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a challenging task requiring novel inspection paradigms and methodological tools devoted to support effective and timely maintenance actions. In this context, non‐destructive technologies (NDTs) turn out to be of paramount importance and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is worthy of consideration for on‐demand, high‐resolution, subsurface surveys. Although GPR is an assessed technology, commercially available systems mainly work close to the structure under test, and those suitable to be mounted on moving platforms are hard to be used for the inspection of vertical structures. In this frame, mini–Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with radar systems are worthy of consideration because of their potential advantages in terms of versatility. This paper deals with the design of a compact mini‐drone‐based radar prototype for contactless imaging of elongated, horizontal and vertical structures. Herein, the design guidelines are discussed qualitatively and the assembled prototype is presented. Moreover, a performance analysis is provided by accounting for simulated data and preliminary experiments carried out in controlled conditions. Conclusions analyze challenges and perspectives.
