1. Characterization of the ejecta from NASA/DART impact on Dimorphos: observations and Monte Carlo models

Abstract

The NASA/DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft successfully crashed on Dimorphos, the secondary component of the binary (65803) Didymos system. Following the impact, a large dust cloud was released, and a long-lasting dust tail was developed. We have extensively monitored the dust tail from the ground and from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We provide a characterization of the ejecta dust properties, i.e., particle size distribution and ejection speeds, ejection geometric parameters, and mass, by combining both observational data sets, and by using Monte Carlo models of the observed dust tail. The differential size distribution function that best fits the imaging data was a broken power-law, having a power index of --2.5 for particles of r$\le$ 3 mm, and of --3.7 for larger particles. The particles range in sizes from 1 $\mu$m up to 5 cm. The ejecta is characterized by two components, depending on velocity and ejection direction. The northern component of the double tail, observed since October 8th 2022, might be associated to a secondary ejection event from impacting debris on Didymos, although it is also possible that this feature results from the binary system dynamics alone. Abstract

Some active asteroids have been proposed to be the result of impact events. Because active asteroids are generally discovered serendipitously only after their tail formation, the process of the impact ejecta evolving into a tail has never been directly observed. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, apart from having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos, demonstrated the activation process of an asteroid from an impact under precisely known impact conditions. Here we report the observations of the DART impact ejecta with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from impact time T+15 minutes to T+18.5 days at spatial resolutions of ~2.1 km per pixel. Our observations reveal a complex evolution of ejecta, which is first dominated by the gravitational interaction between the Didymos binary system and the ejected dust and later by solar radiation pressure. The lowest-speed ejecta dispersed via a sustained tail that displayed a consistent morphology with previously observed asteroid tails thought to be produced by impact. Abstract

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is the first full-scale test of an asteroid deflection technology. Results from the hypervelocity kinetic impact and Earth-based observations, coupled with LICIACube and the later Hera mission, will result in measurement of the momentum transfer efficiency accurate to ~10% and characterization of the Didymos binary system. But DART is a single experiment; how could these results be used in a future planetary defense necessity involving a different asteroid? We examine what aspects of Dimorphos's response to kinetic impact will be constrained by DART results; how these constraints will help refine knowledge of the physical properties of asteroidal materials and predictive power of impact simulations; what information about a potential Earth impactor could be acquired before a deflection effort; and how design of a deflection mission should be informed by this understanding. We generalize the momentum enhancement factor $\beta$, showing that a particular direction-specific $\beta$ will be directly determined by the DART results, and that a related direction-specific $\beta$ is a figure of merit for a kinetic impact mission. The DART $\beta$ determination constrains the ejecta momentum vector, which, with hydrodynamic simulations, constrains the physical properties of Dimorphos's near-surface. In a hypothetical planetary defense exigency, extrapolating these constraints to a newly discovered asteroid will require Earth-based observations and benefit from in-situ reconnaissance. We show representative predictions for momentum transfer based on different levels of reconnaissance and discuss strategic targeting to optimize the deflection and reduce the risk of a counterproductive deflection in the wrong direction., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft is planned to impact the natural satellite of (65803) Didymos, Dimorphos, around 23:14 UTC on 26 September 2022, causing a reduction in its orbital period that will be measurable with ground-based observations. This test of kinetic impactor technology will provide the first estimate of the momentum transfer enhancement factor $\beta$ at a realistic scale, wherein ejecta from the impact provides an additional deflection to the target. Earth-based observations, the LICIACube spacecraft (to be detached from DART prior to impact), and ESA's follow-up Hera mission to launch in 2024, will provide additional characterization of the deflection test. Together Hera and DART comprise the Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment (AIDA) cooperation between NASA and ESA. Here the predicted dynamical states of the binary system upon arrival and after impact are presented. The assumed dynamically relaxed state of the system will be excited by the impact, leading to an increase in eccentricity and slight tilt of the orbit together with enhanced libration of Dimorphos with amplitude dependent on the currently poorly known target shape. Free rotation around the moon's long axis may also be triggered and the orbital period will experience variations from seconds to minutes over timescales of days to months. Shape change of either body due to cratering or mass wasting triggered by crater formation and ejecta may affect $\beta$ but can be constrained through additional measurements. Abstract

Hypervelocity impacts play a significant role in the evolution of asteroids, causing material to be ejected and partially reaccreted. However, the dynamics and evolution of ejected material in a binary asteroid system have never been observed directly. Observations of Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impact on asteroid Dimorphos have revealed features on a scale of thousands of kilometers, including curved ejecta streams and a tail bifurcation originating from the Didymos system. Here we show that these features result naturally from the dynamical interaction of the ejecta with the binary system and solar radiation pressure. These mechanisms may be used to constrain the orbit of a secondary body, or to investigate the binary nature of an asteroid. Also, they may reveal breakup or fission events in active asteroids, and help determine the asteroid's properties following an impact event. In the case of DART, our findings suggest that Dimorphos is a very weak, rubble-pile asteroid, with an ejecta mass estimated to be in the range of (1.1-5.5)×107 kg. 11. Design and control of solar radiation pressure assisted missions in the sun-earth restricted three-body problem

Abstract

The scientific interest in space exploration is driven by the desire to answer fundamental questions relating to the formation of our solar system and life on Earth. Space agencies are currently pushing the boundaries of space mission design to meet scientific goals. Thus, space missions require novel trajectories to further human space exploration. A modern approach that has arisen in space mission design is to use dynamical system tools that exploit the natural dynamics of the solar system. A spacecraft's natural dynamics are affected by environmental perturbations such as Solar Radiation Pressure(SRP). Traditionally, the design of space missions requires any perturbations to be counteracted through corrective manoeuvres. However, these corrective manoeuvres require propellant and therefore the pre-storing of fuel. This thesis investigates fuel-free propulsion for harnessing SRP in the design of space missions of the Sun-Earth restricted three-body problem. SRP propulsion is applied to the spacecraft's orbit control and furthermore to create the propulsion required for the design of transfers between quasi-periodic orbits and end-of-life disposal trajectories. The advantage of SRP manoeuvres is that the spacecraft can have access to an unlimited source of propellant (the Sun's radiation) consequently extending its life and reducing the overall mission costs; where the advancement in space technology makes harnessing SRP devices possible for future missions design. SRP manoeuvres are triggered by light and extended reflective deployable structures (i.e., mirror-like surfaces). The magnitude of the SRP acceleration is a function of the spacecraft's area-to-mass ratio, its reflectivity properties, mass and orientation of the reflective surface to the Sun-line direction. This thesis demonstrates that SRP manoeuvres are an effective and an effcient approach to stabilise the natural dynamics of the spacecraft in the Sun-Earth system. The size of the required reflective deployable area and spacecraft pointing accuracy are the ultimate outcomes of this research. Along with the design of the reflective area, the definition of a new control law, a method to perform transfers between quasi-periodic orbits and a strategy for the end-of-life disposal are the major important research findings.

Abstract

This paper presents a general strategy for tracking the scale-span movement process of asteroid regolith materials. It achieves the tracking of the mass movement on the asteroid at a realistic scale, under conditions of high-resolution asteroid surface topography (submeter level) and actual regolith particle sizes. To overcome the memory exponential expansion caused by the enlarged computational domain, we improved the conventional cell-linked list method so that it can be applied to arbitrarily large computational domains around asteroids. An efficient contact detection algorithm for particles and polyhedral shape models of asteroids is presented, which avoids traversing all surface triangles and thus allows us to model high-resolution surface topography. A parallel algorithm based on Compute Unified Device Architecture for the gravitational field of the asteroid is presented. Leveraging heterogeneous computing features, further architectural optimization overlaps computations of the long-range and short-range interactions, resulting in an approaching doubling of computational efficiency compared to the code lacking architectural optimizations. Using the above strategy, a specific high-fidelity discrete element method code that integrates key mechanical models, including the irregular gravitational field, the interparticle and particle-surface interactions, and the coupled dynamics between the particles and the asteroid, is developed to track the asteroid regolith mass movement. As tests, we simulated the landslide of a sand pile on the asteroid's surface during spin-up. The simulation results demonstrate that the code can track the mass movement of the regolith particles on the surface of the asteroid from local landslides to mass leakage with good accuracy. Abstract

Some active asteroids have been proposed to be the result of impact events1. Because active asteroids are generally discovered serendipitously only after their tail formation, the process of the impact ejecta evolving into a tail has never been directly observed. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission2, apart from having successfully changed the orbital period of Dimorphos3, demonstrated the activation process of an asteroid from an impact under precisely known impact conditions. Here we report the observations of the DART impact ejecta with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from impact time T+15 minutes to T+18.5 days at spatial resolutions of ~2.1 km per pixel. Our observations reveal a complex evolution of ejecta, which is first dominated by the gravitational interaction between the Didymos binary system and the ejected dust and later by solar radiation pressure. The lowest-speed ejecta dispersed via a sustained tail that displayed a consistent morphology with previously observed asteroid tails thought to be produced by impact4,5. The ejecta evolution following DART’s controlled impact experiment thus provides a framework for understanding the fundamental mechanisms acting on asteroids disrupted by natural impact1,6.

Abstract

We overview various efforts within the DART Investigation Team's Ejecta Working Group to predict the characteristics, quantity, dynamical behavior, and observability of DART impact ejecta. We discuss various methodologies for simulation of the impact/cratering process with their advantages and drawbacks in relation to initializing ejecta for subsequent dynamical propagation through and away from the Didymos system. We discuss the most relevant forces acting on ejecta once decoupled from Dimorphos's surface and highlight various software packages we have developed and used to dynamically simulate ejecta under the action of those forces. With some additional software packages, we explore the influence of additional perturbing effects, such as interparticle collisions within true N-body codes and nonspherical and rotating particles' interplay with solar radiation pressure. We find that early-timescale and close-proximity ejecta evolution is highly sensitive to some of these effects (e.g., collisions) while relatively insensitive to other factors. We present a methodology for turning the time-evolving size- and spatially discretized number density field output from ejecta simulations into synthetic images for multiple platforms/cameras over wide-ranging vantage points and timescales. We present such simulated images and apply preliminary analyses to them for nominal and off-nominal cases bracketing realistic total mass of ejecta and ejecta cumulative size–frequency distribution slope. Our analyses foreshadow the information content we may be able to extract from the actual images taken during and after the DART encounter by both LICIACube and Earth-vicinity telescopes. 34. Mechanical design of self-reconfiguring 4D-printed OrigamiSat: a new concept for solar sailing

Abstract

In this article, a self-reconfiguring OrigamiSat concept is presented. The reconfiguration of the proposed OrigamiSat is triggered by combining the effect of 4D material (i.e. origami’s edges) and changes in the local surface optical properties (i.e., origami’s facets) to harness the solar radiation pressure acceleration. The proposed OrigamiSat uses the principle of solar sailing to enhance the effect of the Sun radiation to generate momentum on the Aluminised Kapton (Al-Kapton) origami surface by transitioning from mirror-like to diffusely reflecting optical properties of each individual facet. Numerical simulations have demonstrated that local changes in the optical properties can trigger reconfiguration. A minimum of 1-m edge size facet is required for a thick-origami to generate enough forces from the Sun radiation. The thick-origami pattern is 3D-printed directly on a thin Al-Kapton film (the solar sail substrate which is highly reflective). An elastic filament (thermoplastic polyurethane TPU) showed best performance when printing directly on the Al-Kapton and the Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene with carbon fiber reinforcement (ABS/cc) is added to augment the origami mechanical properties. The 4D material (shape memory polymer) is integrated only at specific edges to achieve self-deployment by applying heat. Two different folding mechanisms were studied: 1) the cartilage-like, where the hinge is made combining the TPU and the 4D material which make the mounts or valleys fully stretchable, and 2) the mechanical hinge, where simple hinges are made solely of ABS/cc. Numerical simulations have demonstrated that the cartilage-like hinge is the most suitable design for light-weight reconfigurable OrigamiSat when using the solar radiation pressure acceleration. We have used build-in electric board to heat up the 4D material and trigger the folding. We envisage embedding the heat wire within the 4D hinge in the future.

Abstract

We overview various efforts within the DART Investigation Team's Ejecta Working Group to predict the characteristics, quantity, dynamical behavior, and observability of DART impact ejecta. We discuss various methodologies for simulation of the impact/cratering process with their advantages and drawbacks in relation to initializing ejecta for subsequent dynamical propagation through and away from the Didymos system. We discuss the most relevant forces acting on ejecta once decoupled from Dimorphos's surface and highlight various software packages we have developed and used to dynamically simulate ejecta under the action of those forces. With some additional software packages, we explore the influence of additional perturbing effects, such as interparticle collisions within true N-body codes and nonspherical and rotating particles' interplay with solar radiation pressure. We find that early-timescale and close-proximity ejecta evolution is highly sensitive to some of these effects (e.g., collisions) while relatively insensitive to other factors. We present a methodology for turning the time-evolving size- and spatially discretized number density field output from ejecta simulations into synthetic images for multiple platforms/cameras over wide-ranging vantage points and timescales. We present such simulated images and apply preliminary analyses to them for nominal and off-nominal cases bracketing realistic total mass of ejecta and ejecta cumulative size–frequency distribution slope. Our analyses foreshadow the information content we may be able to extract from the actual images taken during and after the DART encounter by both LICIACube and Earth-vicinity telescopes.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the dynamical environment around asteroids to investigate whether ejecta particles from an impact event (artificial or natural) could be temporarily trapped in periodic orbits. If such particles remain about an asteroid, they could potentially jeopardize an orbiting spacecraft in the event of a collision. We make use of invariant manifold theory to assess the conditions - impact location, particle radius, ejection velocity - that cause ejecta particles to get captured in periodic orbits. The analysis is carried out within the dynamical framework of the perturbed Augmented Hill Problem, which takes into account the solar radiation pressure, the effect of eclipses, and the J20 and J40 terms of the asteroid's gravity potential in its spherical harmonics expansion. We analyze millimeter- to centimeter-sized particles and captures into three families of periodic orbits that are robust to large values of the solar radiation pressure acceleration – the traditional a and g’ families of the Hill Problem and the southern halo orbits. We go on to find the impact locations from where ejecta particles are most likely to be captured into periodic orbits via their stable manifolds. As such, we recover the sets of initial states that lead ejecta to temporary orbital capture and show that solar radiation pressure and, subsequently, eclipses, cannot be neglected in these analyses. We apply our analyses to the specific case of JAXA's Hayabusa2 mission that successfully carried out its Small Carry-on Impactor (SCI) operation at asteroid Ryugu in April 2019.
