Temporal action detection (TAD) is a fundamental video understanding task that aims to identify human actions and localize their temporal boundaries in videos. Although this field has achieved remarkable progress in recent years, further progress and real-world applications are impeded by the absence of a standardized framework. Currently, different methods are compared under different implementation settings, evaluation protocols, etc., making it difficult to assess the real effectiveness of a specific technique. To address this issue, we propose \textbf{OpenTAD}, a unified TAD framework consolidating 16 different TAD methods and 9 standard datasets into a modular codebase. In OpenTAD, minimal effort is required to replace one module with a different design, train a feature-based TAD model in end-to-end mode, or switch between the two. OpenTAD also facilitates straightforward benchmarking across various datasets and enables fair and in-depth comparisons among different methods. With OpenTAD, we comprehensively study how innovations in different network components affect detection performance and identify the most effective design choices through extensive experiments. This study has led to a new state-of-the-art TAD method built upon existing techniques for each component. We have made our code and models available at https://github.com/sming256/OpenTAD.

Negative triangularity (NT) tokamak configurations have several key benefits including sufficient core confinement, improved power handling, and reduced edge pressure gradients that allow for edge-localized mode (ELM) free operation. We present the design of a compact NT device for testing sophisticated simulation and control software, with the aim of demonstrating NT controllability and informing power plant operation. The TokaMaker code is used to develop the basic electromagnetic system of the $R_0$ = 1 m, $a$ = 0.27 m, $B_t$ = 3 T, $I_p$ = 0.75 MA tokamak. The proposed design utilizes eight poloidal field coils with maximum currents of 1 MA to achieve a wide range of plasma geometries with $-0.7 < \delta < -0.3$ and $1.5 < \kappa < 1.9$. Scenarios with strong negative triangularity and high elongation are particularly susceptible to vertical instability, necessitating the inclusion of high-field side and/or low-field side passive stabilizing plates which together reduce vertical instability growth rates by $\approx$75%. Upper limits for the forces on poloidal and toroidal field coils are predicted and mechanical loads on passive structures during current quench events are assessed. The 3 T on-axis toroidal field is achieved with 16 demountable copper toroidal field coils, allowing for easy maintenance of the vacuum vessel and poloidal field coils. This pre-conceptual design study demonstrates that the key capabilities required of a dedicated NT tokamak experiment can be realized with existing copper magnet technologies.

The fusion energy research and development landscape has seen significant advances in recent years, with important scientific and technological breakthroughs and a rapid rise of investment in the private sector. The workforce needs of the nascent fusion industry are growing at a rate that academic workforce development programs are not currently able to match. This paper presents the findings of the Workforce Accelerator for Fusion Energy Development Conference held in Hampton, Virginia, United States of America (USA), on May 29-30 2024, which was funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). A major goal of the conference was to focus on bringing public and private stakeholders together to identify opportunities for partnership in fusion research and education with the goal of meeting the needs for a talented and diverse workforce. Representatives from industry, academia, and national laboratories participated in the conference through the preparation of white papers, presentations, and group discussions, and the production of recommendations to address the challenges facing the US fusion workforce.

In this paper we present a new thin-wall eddy current modeling code, ThinCurr, for studying inductively-coupled currents in 3D conducting structures -- with primary application focused on the interaction between currents flowing in coils, plasma, and conducting structures of magnetically-confined plasma devices. The code utilizes a boundary finite element method on an unstructured, triangular grid to accurately capture device structures. The new code, part of the broader Open FUSION Toolkit, is open-source and designed for ease of use without sacrificing capability and speed through a combination of Python, Fortran, and C/C++ components. Scalability to large models is enabled through use of hierarchical off-diagonal low-rank compression of the inductance matrix, which is otherwise dense. Ease of handling large models of complicated geometry is further supported by automatic determination of supplemental elements through a greedy homology approach. A detailed description of the numerical methods of the code and verification of the implementation of those methods using cross-code comparisons against the VALEN code and Ansys commercial analysis software is shown.

We present a model for the particle balance in the post-disruption runaway electron plateau phase of a tokamak discharge. The model is constructed with the help of, and applied to, experimental data from TCV discharges investigating the so-called "low-Z benign termination" runaway electron mitigation scheme. In the benign termination scheme, the free electron density is first reduced in order for a subsequently induced MHD instability to grow rapidly and spread the runaway electrons widely across the wall. The model explains why there is an upper limit for the neutral pressure above which the termination is not benign. We are also able to show that the observed non-monotonic dependence of the free electron density with the measured neutral pressure is due to plasma re-ionization induced by runaway electron impact ionization. At higher neutral pressures, more target particles are present in the plasma for runaway electrons to collide with and ionize. Parameter scans are conducted to clarify the role of the runaway electron density and energy on the upper pressure limit, and it is found that only the runaway electron density has a noticeable impact., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, special issue paper after the Joint Varenna-Lausanne International Workshop

NT experiments have demonstrated core performance on par with positive triangularity (PT) H-mode without edge-localized modes (ELMs), encouraging further study of an NT reactor core. In this work, we use integrated modeling to scope the operating space around two NT reactor strategies: a high-field, compact fusion pilot plant concept and a low field, high aspect ratio concept. By integrating equilibrium, core transport, and edge ballooning instability models, we establish a range of operating points with less than 50 MW scrape-off layer power and fusion power comparable to positive triangularity (PT) H-mode reactor concepts. Heating and seeded impurities are leveraged to accomplish the same fusion performance and scrape-off layer exhaust power for various pressure edge boundary conditions. Scans over these pressure edge conditions accommodate any current uncertainty of the properties of the NT edge and show that the performance of an NT reactor will be extremely dependent on the edge pressure. The high-field case is found to enable lower scrape-off layer power because it is capable of reaching high fusion powers at a relatively compact size, which allows increased separatrix density without exceeding the Greenwald density limit. An increase in fusion power density is seen at weaker NT. Infinite-n ballooning instability models indicate that an NT reactor core can reach fusion powers comparable to leading PT H-mode reactor concepts while remaining ballooning-stable. Seeded krypton is leveraged to further lower scrape-off layer power since NT does not have a requirement to remain in H-mode. We contextualize the NT reactor operating space by comparing to popular PT H-mode reactor concepts, and find that NT exhibits competitive ELM-free performance with these concepts for a variety of edge conditions while maintaining relatively low scrape-off layer power., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures. The first achievement of highly radiating plasmas in negative triangularity is shown with an operational space featuring high core radiation at high Greenwald fraction obtained with the injection of reactor-relevant seeded gases. These negative triangularity (NT) shape diverted discharges reach high values of normalized plasma pressure (BetaN > 2) at high radiation fraction with no ELMs. We demonstrate that as long as the impurity level in the core is kept low to avoid excessive fuel dilution and impurity accumulation, integration of NT configuration with high radiation fraction not only is achievable but it can lead to confinement improvement with stabilization effects originating from collisionality, ExB shear and profiles changes due to impurity radiation cooling. The underlying physics mechanism is robust and holds for a variety of impurity species. The absence of the requirement to stay in H-mode translates in a higher core radiation fraction potentially allowed in NT shape effectively mitigating the power exhaust issue. The results presented here demonstrate a path to high performance, ELM free and highly radiative regime with rector-relevant seeding gases making this regime a potential new scenario for reactor operation.

We report the suppression of Type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) in the EAST tokamak under ITER baseline conditions using $n = 4$ Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs), while maintaining energy confinement. Achieving RMP-ELM suppression requires a normalized plasma beta ($\beta_N$) exceeding 1.8 in a target plasma with $q_{95}\approx 3.1$ and tungsten divertors. Quasi-linear modeling shows high plasma beta enhances RMP-driven neoclassical toroidal viscosity torque, reducing field penetration thresholds. These findings demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of high $n$ RMPs for ELM suppression in ITER., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

A plasma scenario with negative triangularity (NT) shaping is achieved on MAST-U for the first time. While edge localized modes (ELMs) are eventually suppressed as the triangularity is decreased below $\delta$ < -0.06, an extended period of H-mode operation with Type-III ELMs is sustained at less negative $\delta$ even through access to the second stability region for ideal ballooning modes is closed. This documents a qualitative difference from the ELM-free access conditions documented in NT scenarios on conventional aspect ratio machines. The electron temperature at the pedestal top drops across the transition to ELM-free operation, but a steady rise in core temperature as $\delta$ is decreased allows for similar normalized beta in the ELM-free NT and H-mode positive triangularity shapes.

This work explores power handling solutions for high-field, highly-radiative negative triangularity (NT) reactors based around the MANTA concept \cite{rutherford_manta_2024}. The divertor design is kept as simple as possible, opting for a standard divertor with standard leg length. FreeGS is used to create an equilibrium for the boundary region, prioritizing a short outer leg length of only $\sim$50 cm ($\sim$40\% of the minor radius). The UEDGE code package is used for the boundary plasma solution, to track plasma temperatures and fluxes to the divertor targets. It is found that for $P_\mathrm{SOL}$ = 25 MW and $n_\mathrm{sep} = 0.96 \times 10^{20}$ m$^{-3}$, conditions consistent with initial core transport modeling, little additional power mitigation is necessary. For external impurity injection of just 0.13\% Ne, the peak heat flux density at the more heavily loaded outer targets falls to 7.8 MW/m$^{2}$, while the electron temperature $T_\mathrm{e}$ remains just under 5 eV. Scans around the parameter space reveal that even at densities lower than in the primary operating scenario, $P_\mathrm{SOL}$ can be increased up to 50 MW, so long as a slightly higher fraction of extrinsic radiator is used. With less than 1\% neon (Ne) impurity content, the divertor still experiences less than 10 MW/m$^{2}$ at the outer target. Design of the plasma-facing components includes a close-fitting vacuum vessel with a tungsten inner surface as well as FLiBe-carrying cooling channels fashioned into the VV wall directly behind the divertor targets. For the seeded heat flux profile, Ansys Fluent heat transfer simulations estimate that the outer target temperature remains at just below 1550\degree C. Initial scoping of advanced divertor designs shows that for an X-divertor, detachment of the outer target becomes much simpler, and plasma fluxes to the targets drop considerably with only 0.01\% Ne content.

ITER coil tolerances are re-evaluated using the modern understanding of coupling to least-stable plasma modes and an updated center-line-traced model of ITER's coil windings. This reassessment finds the tolerances to be conservative through a statistical, linear study of $n=1$ error fields (EFs) due to tilted, shifted misplacements and nominal windings of central solenoid and poloidal field coils within tolerance. We also show that a model-based correction scheme remains effective even when metrology quality is sub-optimal, and compare this to projected empirical correction schemes. We begin with an analysis of the necessity of error field correction (EFC) for daily operation in ITER using scaling laws for the EF penetration threshold. We then consider the predictability of EF dominant mode overlap across early planned ITER scenarios and, as measuring EFs in high power scenarios can pose risks to the device, the potential for extrapolation to the ITER Baseline Scenario (IBS). We find that carefully designing a scenario matching currents proportionally to those of the IBS is far more important than plasma shape or profiles in accurately measuring an optimal correction current set., Comment: 11 pages, 13 Figures. The MANTA (Modular Adjustable Negative Triangularity ARC-class) design study investigated how negative-triangularity (NT) may be leveraged in a compact, fusion pilot plant (FPP) to take a ``power-handling first" approach. The result is a pulsed, radiative, ELM-free tokamak that satisfies and exceeds the FPP requirements described in the 2021 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report ``Bringing Fusion to the U.S. Grid". A self-consistent integrated modeling workflow predicts a fusion power of 450 MW and a plasma gain of 11.5 with only 23.5 MW of power to the scrape-off layer (SOL). This low $P_\text{SOL}$ together with impurity seeding and high density at the separatrix results in a peak heat flux of just 2.8 MW/m$^{2}$. MANTA's high aspect ratio provides space for a large central solenoid (CS), resulting in ${\sim}$15 minute inductive pulses. In spite of the high B fields on the CS and the other REBCO-based magnets, the electromagnetic stresses remain below structural and critical current density limits. Iterative optimization of neutron shielding and tritium breeding blanket yield tritium self-sufficiency with a breeding ratio of 1.15, a blanket power multiplication factor of 1.11, toroidal field coil lifetimes of $3100 \pm 400$ MW-yr, and poloidal field coil lifetimes of at least $890 \pm 40$ MW-yr. Following balance of plant modeling, MANTA is projected to generate 90 MW of net electricity at an electricity gain factor of ${\sim}2.4$. Systems-level economic analysis estimates an overnight cost of US\$3.4 billion, meeting the NASEM FPP requirement that this first-of-a-kind be less than US\$5 billion. The toroidal field coil cost and replacement time are the most critical upfront and lifetime cost drivers, respectively.

This study investigates whether Compressed-Language Models (CLMs), i.e. language models operating on raw byte streams from Compressed File Formats~(CFFs), can understand files compressed by CFFs. We focus on the JPEG format as a representative CFF, given its commonality and its representativeness of key concepts in compression, such as entropy coding and run-length encoding. We test if CLMs understand the JPEG format by probing their capabilities to perform along three axes: recognition of inherent file properties, handling of files with anomalies, and generation of new files. Our findings demonstrate that CLMs can effectively perform these tasks. These results suggest that CLMs can understand the semantics of compressed data when directly operating on the byte streams of files produced by CFFs. The possibility to directly operate on raw compressed files offers the promise to leverage some of their remarkable characteristics, such as their ubiquity, compactness, multi-modality and segment-nature.

Tokamak plasmas with strong negative triangularity (NT) shaping typically exhibit fundamentally different edge behavior than conventional L-mode or H-mode plasmas. Over the entire DIII-D database, plasmas with sufficiently negative triangularity are found to be inherently free of edge localized modes (ELMs), even at injected powers well above the predicted L-H power threshold. A critical triangularly ($\delta_\mathrm{crit}\simeq-0.15$), consistent with inherently ELM-free operation is identified, beyond which access to the second stability region for infinite-$n$ ballooning modes closes on DIII-D. It is also possible to close access to this region, and thereby prevent an H-mode transition, at weaker average triangularities ($\delta\lesssim\delta_\mathrm{crit}$) provided that at least one of the two x-points is still sufficiently negative. Enhanced low field side magnetic fluctuations during ELM-free operation are consistent with additional turbulence limiting the NT edge gradient. Despite the reduced upper limit on the pressure gradient imposed by ballooning stability, NT plasmas are able to support small pedestals and are typically characterized by an enhancement of edge pressure gradients beyond those found in traditional L-mode plasmas. Further, the pressure gradient inside of this small pedestal is unusually steep, allowing access to high core performance that is competitive with other ELM-free regimes previously achieved on DIII-D. Since ELM-free operation in NT is linked directly to the magnetic geometry, NT fusion pilot plants are predicted to maintain advantageous edge conditions even in burning plasma regimes, potentially eliminating reactor core-integration issues caused by ELMs.

The path of tokamak fusion and ITER is maintaining high-performance plasma to produce sufficient fusion power. This effort is hindered by the transient energy burst arising from the instabilities at the boundary of high-confinement plasmas. The application of 3D magnetic perturbations is the method in ITER and possibly in future fusion power plants to suppress this instability and avoid energy busts damaging the device. Unfortunately, the conventional use of the 3D field in tokamaks typically leads to degraded fusion performance and an increased risk of other plasma instabilities, two severe issues for reactor implementation. In this work, we present an innovative 3D field optimization, exploiting machine learning, real-time adaptability, and multi-device capabilities to overcome these limitations. This integrated scheme is successfully deployed on DIII-D and KSTAR tokamaks, consistently achieving reactor-relevant core confinement and the highest fusion performance without triggering damaging instabilities or bursts while demonstrating ITER-relevant automated 3D optimization for the first time. This is enabled both by advances in the physics understanding of self-organized transport in the plasma edge and by advances in machine-learning technology, which is used to optimize the 3D field spectrum for automated management of a volatile and complex system. These findings establish real-time adaptive 3D field optimization as a crucial tool for ITER and future reactors to maximize fusion performance while simultaneously minimizing damage to machine components.

Movie trailers are an essential tool for promoting films and attracting audiences. However, the process of creating trailers can be time-consuming and expensive. To streamline this process, we propose an automatic trailer generation framework that generates plausible trailers from a full movie by automating shot selection and composition. Our approach draws inspiration from machine translation techniques and models the movies and trailers as sequences of shots, thus formulating the trailer generation problem as a sequence-to-sequence task. We introduce Trailer Generation Transformer (TGT), a deep-learning framework utilizing an encoder-decoder architecture. TGT movie encoder is tasked with contextualizing each movie shot representation via self-attention, while the autoregressive trailer decoder predicts the feature representation of the next trailer shot, accounting for the relevance of shots' temporal order in trailers. We present spot properties on 32 periodic young stellar objects in IC 5070. Long term, $\sim$5 yr, light curves in the $V$, $R$, and $I$-bands are obtained through the HOYS (Hunting Outbursting Young Stars) citizen science project. These are dissected into six months long slices, with 3 months oversampling, to measure 234 sets of amplitudes in all filters. We fit 180 of these with reliable spot solutions. Two thirds of spot solutions are cold spots, the lowest is 2150 K below the stellar temperature. One third are warm spots that are above the stellar temperature by less than $\sim$2000 K. Cold and warm spots have maximum surface coverage values of 40 percent, although only 16 percent of warm spots are above 20 percent surface coverage as opposed to 60 percent of the cold spots. Warm spots are most likely caused by a combination of plages and low density accretion columns, most common on objects without inner disc excess emission in $K-W2$. Five small hot spot solutions have $<3$ percent coverage and are 3000 - 5000 K above the stellar temperature. These are attributed to accretion, and four of them occur on the same object. The majority of our objects are likely to be accreting. However, we observe very few accretion hot spots as either the accretion is not stable on our timescale or the photometry is dominated by other features. We do not identify cyclical spot behaviour on the targets. The operational space and global performance of plasmas with edge-localized modes (ELMs) suppressed by resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) are surveyed by comparing AUG, DIII-D, EAST, and KSTAR stationary operating points. RMP-ELM suppression is achieved over a range of plasma currents, toroidal fields, and RMP toroidal mode numbers. Consistent operational windows in edge safety factor are found across devices, while windows in plasma shaping parameters are distinct. Accessed pedestal parameters reveal a quantitatively similar pedestal-top density limit for RMP-ELM suppression in all devices of just over 3x1019 m-3. This is surprising given the wide variance of many engineering parameters and edge collisionalities, and poses a challenge to extrapolation of the regime. Wide ranges in input power, confinement time, and stored energy are observed, with the achieved triple product found to scale like the product of current, field, and radius. Observed energy confinement scaling with engineering parameters for RMP-ELM suppressed plasmas are presented and compared with expectations from established H and L-mode scalings, including treatment of uncertainty analysis. Different scaling exponents for individual engineering parameters are found as compared to the established scalings. However, extrapolation to next-step tokamaks ITER and SPARC find overall consistency within uncertainties with the established scalings, finding no obvious performance penalty when extrapolating from the assembled multi-device RMP-ELM suppressed database. Overall this work identifies common physics for RMP-ELM suppression and highlights the need to pursue this no-ELM regime at higher magnetic field and different plasma physical size., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

The thermodynamic description of the (LiF, NaF, KF, CrF2)-CrF3 systems has been revisited, aiming for a better understanding of the effects of Cr on the FLiNaK molten salt. First-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were performed to determine the electronic and structural properties of each compound, including the formation enthalpy, volume, and bulk modulus. DFT-based phonon calculations were carried out to determine the thermodynamic properties of compounds, for example, enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity as functions of temperature. Phonon-based thermodynamic properties show a good agreement with experimental data of binary compounds LiF, NaF, KF, CrF3, and CrF2, establishing a solid foundation to determine thermodynamic properties of ternary compounds as well as to verify results estimated by the Neumann-Kopp rule. Additionally, DFT-based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were employed to predict the mixing enthalpies of liquid salts. Using DFT-based results and experimental data in the literature, the (LiF, NaF, KF, CrF2)-CrF3 system has been remodeled in terms of the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach using the modified quasichemical model with quadruplet approximation (MQMQA) for liquid. Calculated phase stability in the present work shows an excellent agreement with experiments, indicating the effectiveness of combining DFT-based total energy, phonon, and AIMD calculations, and CALPHAD modeling to provide the thermodynamic description in complex molten salt systems.

The Hunting Outbursting Young Stars (HOYS) project performs long-term, optical, multi-filter, high cadence monitoring of 25 nearby young clusters and star forming regions. Utilising Gaia DR3 data we have identified about 17000 potential young stellar members in 45 coherent astrometric groups in these fields. Twenty one of them are clear young groups or clusters of stars within one kiloparsec and they contain 9143 Gaia selected potential members. The cluster distances, proper motions and membership numbers are determined. We analyse long term (about 7yr) V, R, and I-band light curves from HOYS for 1687 of the potential cluster members. One quarter of the stars are variable in all three optical filters, and two thirds of these have light curves that are symmetric around the mean. Light curves affected by obscuration from circumstellar materials are more common than those affected by accretion bursts, by a factor of 2-4. The variability fraction in the clusters ranges from 10 to almost 100 percent, and correlates positively with the fraction of stars with detectable inner disks, indicating that a lot of variability is driven by the disk. About one in six variables shows detectable periodicity, mostly caused by magnetic spots. Two thirds of the periodic variables with disk excess emission are slow rotators, and amongst the stars without disk excess two thirds are fast rotators - in agreement with rotation being slowed down by the presence of a disk., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS, 1 table, 9 figures

Negative triangularity (NT) tokamak configurations may be more susceptible to magneto-hydrodynamic instability, posing challenges for recent reactor designs centered around their favorable properties, such as improved confinement and operation free of edge-localized modes. In this work, we assess the vertical stability of plasmas with NT shaping and develop potential reactor solutions. When coupled with a conformal wall, NT equilibria are confirmed to be less vertically stable than equivalent positive triangularity (PT) configurations. Unlike PT, their vertical stability is degraded at higher poloidal beta. Furthermore, improvements in vertical stability at low aspect ratio do not translate to the NT geometry. NT equilibria are stabilized in PT vacuum vessels due to the increased proximity of the plasma and the wall on the outboard side, but this scenario is found to be undesirable due to reduced vertical gaps which give less spatial margin for control recovery. Instead, we demonstrate that informed positioning of passively conducting plates can lead to improved vertical stability in NT configurations on par with stability metrics expected in PT scenarios. An optimal setup for passive plates in highly elongated NT devices is presented, where plates on the outboard side of the device reduce vertical instability growth rates to 16% of their baseline value. For lower target elongations, integration of passive stabilizers with divertor concepts can lead to significant improvements in vertical stability. Plates on the inboard side of the device are also uniquely enabled in NT geometries, providing opportunity for spatial separation of vertical stability coils and passive stabilizers.

In this paper, we present a new static and time-dependent MagnetoHydroDynamic (MHD) equilibrium code, TokaMaker, for axisymmetric configurations of magnetized plasmas, based on the well-known Grad-Shafranov equation. This code utilizes finite element methods on an unstructured triangular grid to enable capturing accurate machine geometry and simple mesh generation from engineering-like descriptions of present and future devices. The new code is designed for ease of use without sacrificing capability and speed through a combination of Python, Fortran, and C/C++ components. A detailed description of the numerical methods of the code, including a novel formulation of the boundary conditions for free-boundary equilibria, and validation of the implementation of those methods using both analytic test cases and cross-code validation is shown. Results show expected convergence across tested polynomial orders for analytic and cross-code test cases.

A new three-dimensional electromagnetic modeling tool ThinCurr has been developed using the existing PSI-Tet finite-element code in support of conducting structure design work for both the SPARC and DIII-D tokamaks. Within this framework a 3D conducting structure model was created for both the SPARC and DIII-D tokamaks in the thin-wall limit. This model includes accurate details of the vacuum vessel and other conducting structural elements with realistic material resistivities. This model was leveraged to support the design of a passive runaway electron mitigation coil (REMC), studying the effect of various design parameters, including coil resistivity, current quench duration, and plasma vertical position, on the effectiveness of the coil. The REMC is a non-axisymmetric coil designed to passively drive large non-axisymmetric fields during the plasma disruption thereby destroying flux surfaces and deconfining RE seed populations. These studies indicate that current designs should apply substantial 3D fields at the plasma surface during future plasma current disruptions as well as highlight the importance of having the REMC conductors away from the machine midplane in order to ensure they are robust to off-normal disruption scenarios., Comment: 33 pages and 14 figures. to be published in Nuclear Fusion

Strongly-shaped diverted negative triangularity (NT) plasmas in the DIII-D tokamak demonstrate simultaneous access to high normalized current, pressure, density, and confinement. NT plasmas are shown to exist across an expansive parameter space compatible with high fusion power production, revealing surprisingly good core stability properties that compare favorably to conventional positive triangularity plasmas in DIII-D. Non-dimensionalizing the operating space, edge safety factors below 3, normalized betas above 3, Greenwald density fractions above 1, and high-confinement mode (H-mode) confinement qualities above 1 are simultaneously observed, all with a robustly stable edge free from deleterious edge-localized mode instabilities. Scaling of the confinement time with engineering parameters reveals at least a linear dependence on plasma current although with significant power degradation, both in excess of expected H-mode scalings. These results increase confidence that NT plasmas are a viable approach to realize fusion power and open directions for future detailed study.

In a series of high performance diverted discharges on DIII-D, we demonstrate that strong negative triangularity (NT) shaping robustly suppresses all edge-localized mode (ELM) activity over a wide range of plasma conditions: $\langle n\rangle=0.1-1.5\times10^{20}$m$^{-3}$, $P_\mathrm{aux}=0-15$MW and $|B_\mathrm{t}|=1-2.2$T, corresponding to $P_\mathrm{loss}/P_\mathrm{LH08}\sim8$. The full dataset is consistent with the theoretical prediction that magnetic shear in the NT edge inhibits access to ELMing H-mode regimes; all experimental pressure profiles are found to be at or below the infinite-$n$ ballooning stability limit. Importantly, we also report enhanced edge pressure gradients at strong NT that are significantly steeper than in traditional ELM-free L-mode plasmas and provide significant promise for NT reactor integration., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Video activity localization aims at understanding the semantic content in long untrimmed videos and retrieving actions of interest. The retrieved action with its start and end locations can be used for highlight generation, temporal action detection, etc. Unfortunately, learning the exact boundary location of activities is highly challenging because temporal activities are continuous in time, and there are often no clear-cut transitions between actions. Moreover, the definition of the start and end of events is subjective, which may confuse the model. To alleviate the boundary ambiguity, we propose to study the video activity localization problem from a denoising perspective. Specifically, we propose an encoder-decoder model named DenoiseLoc. During training, a set of action spans is randomly generated from the ground truth with a controlled noise scale. Then we attempt to reverse this process by boundary denoising, allowing the localizer to predict activities with precise boundaries and resulting in faster convergence speed. Experiments show that DenoiseLoc advances %in several video activity understanding tasks. For example, we observe a gain of +12.36% average mAP on QV-Highlights dataset and +1.64% mAP@0.5 on THUMOS'14 dataset over the baseline. Moreover, DenoiseLoc achieves state-of-the-art performance on TACoS and MAD datasets, but with much fewer predictions compared to other current methods.

Alfv\'enic modes in the current quench (CQ) stage of the tokamak disruption have been observed in experiments. In DIII-D the excitation of these modes is associated with the presence of high-energy runaway electrons, and a strong mode excitation is often associated with the failure of RE plateau formation. In this work we present results of self-consistent kinetic-MHD simulations of RE-driven compressional Alfv\'en eigenmodes (CAEs) in DIII-D disruption scenarios, providing an explanation of the CQ modes. Simulation results reveal that high energy trapped REs can have resonance with the Alfv\'en mode through their precession motion, and the resonance frequency is proportional to the energy of REs. The mode frequencies and their relationship with the RE energy are consistent with experimental observation. The perturbed magnetic fields from the modes can lead to spatial diffusion of runaway electrons including the nonresonant passing ones, thus providing the theoretical basis for a potential approach for runaway electron mitigation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The recent introduction of the large-scale, long-form MAD and Ego4D datasets has enabled researchers to investigate the performance of current state-of-the-art methods for video grounding in the long-form setup, with interesting findings: current grounding methods alone fail at tackling this challenging task and setup due to their inability to process long video sequences. In this paper, we propose a method for improving the performance of natural language grounding in long videos by identifying and pruning out non-describable windows. We design a guided grounding framework consisting of a Guidance Model and a base grounding model. The Guidance Model emphasizes describable windows, while the base grounding model analyzes short temporal windows to determine which segments accurately match a given language query. We offer two designs for the Guidance Model: Query-Agnostic and Query-Dependent, which balance efficiency and accuracy. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art models by 4.1% in MAD and 4.52% in Ego4D (NLQ), respectively. This paper is one in a series reporting results from small telescope observations of variable young stars. Here, we study the repeating outbursts of three likely Be stars based on long-term optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared photometry for all three objects, along with follow-up spectra for two of the three. The sources are characterised as rare, truly regularly outbursting Be stars. We interpret the photometric data within a framework for modelling light curve morphology, and find that the models correctly predict the burst shapes, including their larger amplitudes and later peaks towards longer wavelengths. We are thus able to infer the start and end times of mass loading into the circumstellar disks of these stars. The disk sizes are typically 3-6 times the areas of the central star. The disk temperatures are ~40%, and the disk luminosities are ~10% of those of the central Be star, respectively. The available spectroscopy is consistent with inside-out evolution of the disk. Higher excitation lines have larger velocity widths in their double-horned shaped emission profiles. In [V.A. Izzo et al 2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 096029], state-of-the-art modeling of thermal and current quench (CQ) MHD coupled with a self-consistent evolution of runaway electron (RE) generation and transport showed that a non-axisymmetric (n = 1) in-vessel coil could passively prevent RE beam formation during disruptions in SPARC, a compact high-field tokamak projected to achieve a fusion gain Q > 2 in DT plasmas. However, such suppression requires finite transport of REs within magnetic islands and re-healed flux surfaces; conservatively assuming zero transport in these regions leads to an upper bound of RE current ~1 MA compared to ~8.7 MA of pre-disruption plasma current. Further investigation finds that core-localized electrons, within r/a < 0.3 and with kinetic energies 0.2-15 MeV, contribute most to the RE plateau formation. Yet only a relatively small amount of transport, i.e. a diffusion coefficient ~18 $\mathrm{m^2/s}$, is needed in the core to fully mitigate these REs. Properly accounting for (i) the CQ electric field's effect on RE transport in islands and (ii) the contribution of significant RE currents to disruption MHD may help achieve this.

The operation of a 3D coil--passively driven by the current quench loop voltage--for the deconfinement of runaway electrons is modeled for disruption scenarios in the SPARC and DIII-D tokamaks. Nonlinear MHD modeling is carried out with the NIMROD code including time-dependent magnetic field boundary conditions to simulate the effect of the coil. Further modeling in some cases uses the ASCOT5 code to calculate advection and diffusion coefficients for runaway electrons based on the NIMROD-calculated fields, and the DREAM code to compute the runaway evolution in the presence of these transport coefficients. Compared with similar modeling in Tinguely, et al [2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 124003], considerably more conservative assumptions are made with the ASCOT5 results, zeroing low levels of transport, particularly in regions in which closed flux surfaces have reformed. Of three coil geometries considered in SPARC, only the $n=1$ coil is found to have sufficient resonant components to suppress the runaway current growth. Without the new conservative transport assumptions, full suppression of the RE current is maintained when the TQ MHD is included in the simulation or when the RE current is limited to 250kA, but when transport in closed flux regions is fully suppressed, these scenarios allow RE beams on the order of 1-2MA to appear. Additional modeling is performed to consider the effects of the close ideal wall. In DIII-D, the current quench is modeled for both limited and diverted equilibrium shapes. In the limited shape, the onset of stochasticity is found to be insensitive to the coil current amplitude and governed largely by the evolution of the safety-factor profile. In both devices, prediction of the q-profile evolution is seen to be critical to predicting the later time effects of the coil.

In this report, we propose a video-language pretraining (VLP) based solution \cite{kevin2022egovlp} for four Ego4D challenge tasks, including Natural Language Query (NLQ), Moment Query (MQ), Object State Change Classification (OSCC), and PNR Localization (PNR). Especially, we exploit the recently released Ego4D dataset \cite{grauman2021ego4d} to pioneer Egocentric VLP from pretraining dataset, pretraining objective, and development set. Based on the above three designs, we develop a pretrained video-language model that is able to transfer its egocentric video-text representation or video-only representation to several video downstream tasks. Our Egocentric VLP achieves 10.46R@1&IoU @0.3 on NLQ, 10.33 mAP on MQ, 74% Acc on OSCC, 0.67 sec error on PNR. V392 Persei is a known dwarf nova (DN) that underwent a classical nova eruption in 2018. Here we report ground-based optical, Swift UV and X-ray, and Fermi-LAT \gamma-ray observations following the eruption for almost three years. V392 Per is one of the fastest evolving novae yet observed, with a $t_2$ decline time of 2 days. Early spectra present evidence for multiple and interacting mass ejections, with the associated shocks driving both the \gamma-ray and early optical luminosity. V392 Per entered Sun-constraint within days of eruption. Upon exit, the nova had evolved to the nebular phase, and we saw the tail of the super-soft X-ray phase. Subsequent optical emission captured the fading ejecta alongside a persistent narrow line emission spectrum from the accretion disk. Ongoing hard X-ray emission is characteristic of a standing accretion shock in an intermediate polar. Analysis of the optical data reveals an orbital period of 3.230 \pm 0.003 days, but we see no evidence for a white dwarf (WD) spin period. The optical and X-ray data suggest a high mass WD, the pre-nova spectral energy distribution (SED) indicates an evolved donor, and the post-nova SED points to a high mass accretion rate. Following eruption, the system has remained in a nova-like high mass transfer state, rather than returning to the pre-nova DN low mass transfer configuration. We suggest that this high state is driven by irradiation of the donor by the nova eruption. Video-Language Pretraining (VLP), which aims to learn transferable representation to advance a wide range of video-text downstream tasks, has recently received increasing attention. Best performing works rely on large-scale, 3rd-person video-text datasets, such as HowTo100M. In this work, we exploit the recently released Ego4D dataset to pioneer Egocentric VLP along three directions. (i) We create EgoClip, a 1st-person video-text pretraining dataset comprising 3.8M clip-text pairs well-chosen from Ego4D, covering a large variety of human daily activities. (ii) We propose a novel pretraining objective, dubbed EgoNCE, which adapts video-text contrastive learning to the egocentric domain by mining egocentric-aware positive and negative samples. (iii) We introduce EgoMCQ, a development benchmark that is close to EgoClip and hence can support effective validation and fast exploration of our design decisions in EgoClip and EgoNCE. Furthermore, we demonstrate strong performance on five egocentric downstream tasks across three datasets: video-text retrieval on EPIC-KITCHENS-100; action recognition on Charades-Ego; natural language query, moment query, and object state change classification on Ego4D challenge benchmarks. OJ 287 is a BL Lacertae type quasar in which the active galactic nucleus (AGN) outshines the host galaxy by an order of magnitude. The only exception to this may be at minimum light when the AGN activity is so low that the host galaxy may make quite a considerable contribution to the photometric intensity of the source. Such a dip or a fade in the intensity of OJ 287 occurred in November 2017, when its brightness was about 1.75 magnitudes lower than the recent mean level. We compare the observations of this fade with similar fades in OJ 287 observed earlier in 1989, 1999, and 2010. It appears that there is a relatively strong reddening of the B$-$V colours of OJ 287 when its V-band brightness drops below magnitude 17. Similar changes are also seen V$-$R, V$-$I, and R$-$I colours during these deep fades. These data support the conclusion that the total magnitude of the host galaxy is $V=18.0 \pm 0.3$, corresponding to $M_{K}=-26.5 \pm 0.3$ in the K-band. This is in agreement with the results, obtained using the integrated surface brightness method, from recent surface photometry of the host. These results should encourage us to use the colour separation method also in other host galaxies with strongly variable AGN nuclei. Clustering analysis of daily load profiles represents an effective technique to classify and aggregate electric users based on their actual consumption patterns. Among other purposes, it may be exploited as a preliminary stage for load forecasting, which is applied in the same way to consumers in the same cluster. Several clustering algorithms have been proposed and developed in the literature, and the choice of the most appropriate set of clustering parameters is crucial for ensuring reliable results. In this paper, an automated service, suited for repeated clustering analysis, is presented. The pipeline is able to process a generic time series dataset and is easily adjustable to test other clustering input parameters; therefore, it may be utilized to find the best set of parameters with the specific dataset. Moreover, it facilitates repeated characterization on real-time load profiles with the aim of detecting sudden changes of consumers behaviors and variable external conditions, which influence the real power forecasting activity on a short temporal scale.

COVID-19 pandemic has been a disruptive event from health, social, and economic points of view. Besides that, changes in people's lifestyles, especially during the 2020 lockdowns, also affected energy networks. COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant decline in electricity demand. The lockdown measures applied to handle the health crisis have caused the most relevant energy impact of the last years. In this paper, the local experiences of the distribution network of Milano, a city in northern Italy, are reported. The analysis starts with a summary of the restrictions imposed during 2020 and focuses on both active and reactive power flows, and faults. To this end, a comparison with 2019 data has been performed, highlighting the main differences with 2020. The outcome of the analysis is a valuable tool to predict urban distribution networks behavior during times of disruption, helping distribution system operators to prepare feasible short-term and long-term resilience plans.

Instability to high toroidal mode number ($n$) ballooning modes has been proposed as the primary gradient-limiting mechanism for tokamak equilibria with negative triangularity ($\delta$) shaping, preventing access to strong H-mode regimes when $\delta\ll0$. To understand how this mechanism extrapolates to reactor conditions, we model the infinite-$n$ ballooning stability as a function of internal profiles and equilibrium shape using a combination of the CHEASE and BALOO codes. While the critical $\delta$ required for avoiding $2^\mathrm{nd}$ stability to high-$n$ modes is observed to depend in a complicated way on various shaping parameters, including the equilibrium aspect ratio, elongation and squareness, equilibria with negative triangularity are robustly prohibited from accessing the $2^\mathrm{nd}$ stability region, offering the prediction that that negative triangularity reactors should maintain L-mode-like operation. In order to access high-$n$ $2^\mathrm{nd}$ stability, the local shear over the entire bad curvature region must be sufficiently negative to overcome curvature destabilization on the low field side. Scalings of the ballooning-limited pedestal height are provided as a function of plasma parameters to aid future scenario design.

The modified quasichemical model in the quadruplet approximation (MQMQA) considers the first- and the second-nearest-neighbor coordination and interactions, particularly useful in describing short-range ordering in complex liquids such as molten salts, slag in metal processing, and electrolytic solutions. The present work implements the MQMQA into the Python based open-source software PyCalphad for thermodynamic calculations. This endeavor facilitates the development of MQMQA-based thermodynamic database with uncertainty quantification (UQ) using the open-source software ESPEI. A new database structure based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) is proposed for ESPEI evaluation of MQMQA model parameters. Using the KF-NiF2 system as an example, we demonstrate the successful implementation of MQMQA in PyCalphad through thermodynamic calculations of Gibbs energy, equilibrium quadruplet fractions, and phase diagram, as well as database development with UQ using ESPEI. The recent and increasing interest in video-language research has driven the development of large-scale datasets that enable data-intensive machine learning techniques. In comparison, limited effort has been made at assessing the fitness of these datasets for the video-language grounding task. Recent works have begun to discover significant limitations in these datasets, suggesting that state-of-the-art techniques commonly overfit to hidden dataset biases. In this work, we present MAD (Movie Audio Descriptions), a novel benchmark that departs from the paradigm of augmenting existing video datasets with text annotations and focuses on crawling and aligning available audio descriptions of mainstream movies. MAD contains over 384,000 natural language sentences grounded in over 1,200 hours of videos and exhibits a significant reduction in the currently diagnosed biases for video-language grounding datasets. MAD's collection strategy enables a novel and more challenging version of video-language grounding, where short temporal moments (typically seconds long) must be accurately grounded in diverse long-form videos that can last up to three hours. Studying rotational variability of young stars is enabling us to investigate a multitude of properties of young star-disk systems. We utilise high cadence, multi-wavelength optical time series data from the Hunting Outbursting Young Stars citizen science project to identify periodic variables in the Pelican Nebula (IC5070). A double blind study using nine different period-finding algorithms was conducted and a sample of 59 periodic variables was identified. We find that a combination of four period finding algorithms can achieve a completeness of 85% and a contamination of 30% in identifying periods in inhomogeneous data sets. The best performing methods are periodograms that rely on fitting a sine curve. Utilising GaiaEDR3 data, we have identified an unbiased sample of 40 periodic YSOs, without using any colour or magnitude selections. With a 98.9% probability we can exclude a homogeneous YSO period distribution. Instead we find a bi-modal distribution with peaks at three and eight days. The sample has a disk fraction of 50%, and its statistical properties are in agreement with other similarly aged YSOs populations. In particular, we confirm that the presence of the disk is linked to predominantly slow rotation and find a probability of 4.8$\times$10$^{-3}$ that the observed relation between period and presence of a disk has occurred by chance. Results from the last FTU campaigns on the deuterium large (wrt FTU volume) pellet REs suppression capability, mainly due to the induced burst MHD activity expelling REs seed are presented for discharges with 0.5 MA and 5.3T. Clear indications of avalanche multiplication of REs following single pellet injection on 0.36 MA flat-top discharges is shown together with quantitative indications of dissipative effects in terms of critical electrical field increase due to fan-like instabilities. Analysis of large fan-like instabilities on post-disruption RE beams, that seem to be correlated with low electrical field and background density drops, reveal their strong RE energy suppression capability suggesting a new strategy for RE energy suppression controlling large fan instabilities. The widespread diffusion of electric mobility requires a contextual expansion of the charging infrastructure. An extended collection and processing of information regarding charging of electric vehicles may turn each electric vehicle charging station into a valuable source of streaming data. Charging point operators may profit from all these data for optimizing their operation and planning activities. In such a scenario, big data and machine learning techniques would allow valorizing real-time data coming from electric vehicle charging stations. This paper presents an architecture able to deal with data streams from a charging infrastructure, with the final aim to forecast electric charging station availability after a set amount of minutes from present time. Both batch data regarding past charges and real-time data streams are used to train a streaming logistic regression model, to take into account recurrent past situations and unexpected actual events. The streaming model performs better than a model trained only using historical data. The results highlight the importance of constantly updating the predictive model parameters in order to adapt to changing conditions and always provide accurate forecasts., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

A new fluid model for runaway electron simulation based on fluid description is introduced and implemented in the magnetohydrodynamics code M3D-C1, which includes self-consistent interactions between plasma and runaway electrons. The model utilizes the method of characteristics to solve the continuity equation for the runaway electron density with large convection speed, and uses a modified Boris algorithm for pseudo particle pushing. The model was employed to simulate magnetohydrodynamics instabilities happening in a runaway electron final loss event in the DIII-D tokamak. Nonlinear simulation reveals that a large fraction of runaway electrons get lost to the wall when kink instabilities are excited and form stochastic field lines in the outer region of the plasma. Plasma current converts from runaway electron current to Ohmic current, and get pinched at the magnetic axis. Given the good agreement with experiment, the simulation model provides a reliable tool to study macroscopic plasma instabilities in existence of runaway electron current, and can be used to support future studies of runaway electron mitigation strategies in ITER., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures

We present our photometric and spectroscopic observations on the peculiar transient AT2018cow. The multi-band photometry covers from peak to $\sim$70 days and the spectroscopy ranges from 5 to $\sim$50 days. The rapid rise ($t_{\mathrm{r}}$$\lesssim$2.9 days), high luminosity ($M_{V,\mathrm{peak}}\sim-$20.8 mag) and fast decline after peak make AT2018cow stand out of any other optical transients. While we find that its light curves show high resemblance to those of type Ibn supernovae. Moreover, the spectral energy distribution remains high temperature of $\sim$14,000 K after $\sim$15 days since discovery. The spectra are featureless in the first 10 days, while some broad emission lines due to H, He, C and O emerge later, with velocity declining from $\sim$14,000 km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim$3000 km s$^{-1}$ at the end of our observations. Narrow and weak He I emission lines emerge in the spectra at $t>$20 days since discovery. These emission lines are reminiscent of the features seen in interacting supernovae like type Ibn and IIn subclasses. We fit the bolometric light curves with a model of circumstellar interaction (CSI) and radioactive decay (RD) of \Ni and find a good fit with ejecta mass $M_{\mathrm{ej}}\sim$3.16 M$_{\odot}$, circumstellar material mass $M_{\mathrm{CSM}}\sim$0.04 M$_{\odot}$, and ejected \Ni mass $M_{^{56}\mathrm{Ni}}\sim$0.23 M$_{\odot}$. The CSM shell might be formed in an eruptive mass ejection of the progenitor star. Furthermore, host environment of AT2018cow implies connection of AT2018cow with massive stars. Combining observational properties and the light curve fitting results, we conclude that AT2018cow might be a peculiar interacting supernova originated from a massive star., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

A database of DIII-D plasmas without ELMs compares the operating space and plasma performance of stationary no-ELM regimes: RMP-ELM suppression, QH-mode, I-mode, EDA H-mode, L-mode, and negative triangularity L-mode (Neg-D). Operational space is documented in terms of engineering and physics parameters, revealing divergent constraints. Some operational space discriminants (such as pedestal collisionality) are well known, while others, such as low torque & safety factor, or high power & density, are less commonly emphasized. Normalized performance (confinement quality and normalized pressure) also discriminate the no-ELM regimes and favor the regimes tolerant to power in DIII-D: RMP, QH, and Neg-D. Absolute performance (triple product $\langle p\rangle\tau$) also discriminates no-ELM regimes and is found to rise linearly with IaB and also benefits from tolerance to power. The highest normalized performance using the metric $\langle p\rangle\tau$/IaB is found in QH and RMP regimes. Though comparable QH and RMP performance is found, the pedestal pressure (p_ped) is very different. p_ped in RMP plasmas is relatively low, and the best performance is found with a high core $\langle p\rangle$ fraction alongside high core rotation, consistent with an ExB shear confinement enhancement. p_ped of QH plasmas is significantly higher than RMP, and QH performance does not correlate with core rotation. However, the highest QH p_ped are found with high carbon fraction. While normalized performance of Neg-D plasmas is comparable to QH and RMP plasmas, the absolute confinement of Neg-D is lower, owing to low elongation and low p_ped achieved thus far. Only the EDA-H, Neg-D, and L-mode scenarios have approached divertor-compatible high separatrix density conditions, with Neg-D preserving the highest performance owing to its compatibility with both high power and density., Comment: 43 figures
