Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from pseudostreamers represent a significant fraction of large-scale eruptions from the Sun. In some cases, these CMEs take a narrow jet-like form reminiscent of coronal jets; in others, they have a much broader fan-shaped morphology like CMEs from helmet streamers. We present results from a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a broad pseudostreamer CME. The early evolution of the eruption is initiated through a combination of breakout interchange reconnection at the overlying null point and ideal instability of the flux rope that forms within the pseudostreamer. This stage is characterized by a rolling motion and deflection of the flux rope toward the breakout current layer. The stretching out of the strapping field forms a flare current sheet below the flux rope; reconnection onset there forms low-lying flare arcade loops and the two-ribbon flare footprint. Once the CME flux rope breaches the rising breakout current layer, interchange reconnection with the external open field disconnects one leg from the Sun. This induces a whip-like rotation of the flux rope, generating the unstructured fan shape characteristic of pseudostreamer CMEs. Interchange reconnection behind the CME releases torsional Alfvén waves and bursty dense outflows into the solar wind. Our results demonstrate that pseudostreamer CMEs follow the same overall magnetic evolution as coronal jets, although they present different morphologies of their ejecta. We conclude that pseudostreamer CMEs should be considered a class of eruptions that are distinct from helmet-streamer CMEs, in agreement with previous observational studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oscillatory reconnection is a specific type of time-dependent reconnection which involves periodic changes in the magnetic topology of a null point. The mechanism has been reported for a variety of magnetic field strengths and configurations, background temperatures, and densities. All these studies report an oscillation in the current density at the null point, but also report a variety of periods, amplitudes, and overall behaviors. We conduct a parametric study for equilibrium magnetic field strength and initial background temperature, solving two-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations around a magnetic X-point. We introduce a parameter space for the ratio of internal to magnetic energy and find self-similar solutions for simulations where this ratio is below 0.1 (which represents a magnetically dominated environment or, equivalently, a low-beta plasma). Self-similarity can be seen in oscillations in the current density at the null (including amplitude and period), ohmic heating, and the temperature generated via reconnection jets. The parameter space of energy ratios also allows us to contextualize previous studies of the oscillatory reconnection mechanism and bring those different studies together into a single unified understanding. Magnetic reconnection is widely believed to be the fundamental process in the solar atmosphere that underlies magnetic energy release and particle acceleration. This process is responsible for the onset of solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and other explosive events (e.g., jets). Here, we report direct imaging of a prolonged plasma/current sheet along with quasiperiodic magnetic reconnection in the solar corona using ultra-high-resolution observations from the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory and the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly. The current sheet appeared near a null point in the fan–spine topology and persisted over an extended period (≈20 hr). The length and apparent width of the current sheet were about 6″ and 2″, respectively, and the plasma temperature was ≈10–20 MK. We observed quasiperiodic plasma inflows and outflows (bidirectional jets with plasmoids) at the reconnection site/current sheet. Furthermore, quasiperiodic reconnection at the long-lasting current sheet produced recurrent eruptions (small flares and jets) and contributed significantly to the recurrent impulsive heating of the active region. Direct imaging of a plasma/current sheet and recurrent null-point reconnection for such an extended period has not been reported previously. These unprecedented observations provide compelling evidence that supports the universal model for solar eruptions (i.e., the breakout model) and have implications for impulsive heating of active regions by recurrent reconnection near null points. The prolonged and sustained reconnection for about 20 hr at the breakout current sheet provides new insights into the dynamics and energy release processes in the solar corona. We present the identification and physical analysis of a possible magnetic island feature seen in white-light images observed by the Wide-field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR) on board the Parker Solar Probe. The island is imaged by WISPR during Parker's second solar encounter on 2019 April 6, when Parker was ∼38 R ⊙ from the Sun's center. We report that the average velocity and acceleration of the feature are approximately 334 km s−1 and −0.64 m s−2. The kinematics of the island feature, coupled with its direction of propagation, indicate that the island is likely entrained in the slow solar wind. The island is elliptical in shape with a density deficit in its center, suggesting the presence of a magnetic guide field. We argue that this feature is consistent with the formation of this island via reconnection in the current sheet of the streamer. The feature's aspect ratio (calculated as the ratio of its minor to major axis) evolves from an elliptical to a more circular shape that approximately doubles during its propagation through WISPR's field of view. The island is not distinct in other white-light observations from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory and the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory coronagraphs, suggesting that this is a comparatively faint heliospheric feature and that viewing perspective and WISPR's enhanced sensitivity are key to observing the magnetic island. The current sheet is an essential feature in solar flares and is the primary site for magnetic reconnection and energy release. Imaging observations feature a long linear structure above the candle-flame-shaped flare loops, which resembles the standard flare model with the current sheet viewed edge-on. We investigate the thermal properties of plasmas surrounding the linear sheet during flares, using EUV observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The differential emission measure analyses show evidence of high temperatures in the plasma sheets (PSs), containing hot emissions from only a narrow temperature range, suggestive of an isothermal feature. The sheet temperature remains constant at different heights above the flare arcade, peaking at around log T = 7.0–7.1; while the well-studied 2017 September 10 X8.2 flare serves as an exception in that the temperature decreases with increasing height and peaks higher ( log T = 7.25) during the gradual phase. Most PS cases also hold similar emission measures and thicknesses; while the PS emissions drop exponentially above the flare arcade, the sheet thicknesses show no significant height association as for all the measurements. The characteristics of isothermal and steady temperature suggest balanced heating and cooling processes along the current sheet; in particular, additional heating may exist to compensate for the conductive and radiative cooling away from the reconnection site. Minifilaments are widespread small-scale structures in the solar atmosphere. To better understand their formation and eruption mechanisms, we investigate the entire life of a sigmoidal minifilament located below a large quiescent filament observed by Big Bear Solar Observatory/Goode Solar Telescope on 2015 August 3. The H α structure initially appears as a group of arched threads, then transforms into two J-shaped arcades, and finally forms a sigmoidal shape. Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly observations in 171 Å show that two coronal jets occur around the southern footpoint of the minifilament before the minifilament eruption. The minifilament eruption starts from the southern footpoint, then interacts with the overlying filament and fails. The aforementioned observational changes correspond to three episodes of flux cancellations observed by SDO/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager. Unlike previous studies, the flux cancellation occurs between the polarity where the southern footpoint of the minifilament is rooted and an external polarity. We construct two magnetic field models before the eruption using the flux rope insertion method and find a hyperbolic flux tube above the flux cancellation site. The observation and modeling results suggest that the eruption is triggered by the external magnetic reconnection between the core field of the minifilament and the external fields due to flux cancellations. Spectral double power laws are common in solar high-energy phenomena such as flares and interplanetary energetic-electron events. However, the physical mechanism that produces the changes in power-law index within a single spectrum is unclear. We developed a fully analytical method of forming single power-law spectra from sequential acceleration of particles orbiting inside and hopping between simulated large-scale magnetic islands formed by flare reconnection. Here, we extend the analytical method to the formation of double power-law spectra by assuming sequential acceleration in two successive regions with different acceleration and particle-transport rates. The resulting spectral distribution is continuous and smooth, with a flattening at low energies, two power-law regions at mid-energies, and a steep rollover at high energies. The model provides analytical expressions for the spectral indices, all energy breaks, and normalization constants as functions of just three physical parameters of each acceleration region: (1) the energy gain in each accelerator, (2) the percentage of particles transferred between accelerators, and (3) the number of accelerators visited. One of the most salient predictions of our work is that the spectral index at high (low) energies is determined by the parameters of the first "seed" (second) acceleration region. By constructing the spectral distribution through an iterative analytical process, the evolution toward a double power law is easily characterized and explained. Our analytical model provides tools to interpret space- and ground-based observations from RHESSI, FOXSI, NuSTAR, Solar Orbiter/STIX, EOVSA, and future high-energy missions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic reconnection is understood to be the main physical process that facilitates the transformation of magnetic energy into heat, motion, and particle acceleration during solar eruptions. Yet, observational constraints on reconnection region properties and dynamics are limited due to a lack of high-cadence and high-spatial-resolution observations. By studying the evolution and morphology of postreconnected field-lines footpoints, or flare ribbons and vector photospheric magnetic field, we estimate the magnetic reconnection flux and its rate of change with time to study the flare reconnection process and dynamics of the current sheet above. We compare high-resolution imaging data to study the evolution of the fine structure in flare ribbons as ribbons spread away from the polarity inversion line. Using data from two illustrative events (one M- and X-class flare), we explore the relationship between the ribbon-front fine structure and the temporal development of bursts in the reconnection region. Additionally, we use the RibbonDB database to perform statistical analysis of 73 (C- to X-class) flares and identify quasiperiodic pulsation (QPP) properties using the Wavelet Transform. Our main finding is the discovery of QPP signatures in the derived magnetic reconnection rates in both example events and the large flare sample. We find that the oscillation periods range from 1 to 4 minutes. Furthermore, we find nearly cotemporal bursts in Hard X-ray (HXR) emission profiles. We discuss how dynamical processes in the current sheet involving plasmoids can explain the nearly cotemporal signatures of quasiperiodicity in the reconnection rates and HXR emission. Magnetic reconnection is believed to play an important role in the release and conversion of energy among magnetized plasma systems. So far, we have been unable to understand under what conditions magnetic reconnection can take place. Based on observations from the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), we study 16 magnetic reconnection events, and each event has a clear X-type configuration consisting of two sets of atmospheric structures. We focus on 38 footpoints that are relevant to these structures and can be clearly determined. By using SDO/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager line-of-sight magnetograms, we track the field evolution of these footpoints. Prior to the occurrence of magnetic reconnection, the associated fields at the footpoints underwent convergence and shear motions, and thus became enhanced and complex. During the converging period, the rates of increase of the mean magnetic flux densities (MFDs) at these footpoints are 0.03–0.25 hr−1. While the unsigned mean MFDs are 70–300 G, magnetic reconnection in the solar atmosphere takes place. Subsequently, the photospheric fields of these footpoints diffuse and weaken, with rates of decrease of the MFDs from 0.03 to 0.18 hr−1. These results suggest that, due to the photospheric dynamical evolution at the footpoints, the footpoint MFDs increase from a small value to a large one, and the corresponding atmospheric magnetic fields become complicated and nonpotential; then reconnection happens and it releases the accumulated magnetic field energy. We report on the first direct in situ measurements of a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) and shock in the corona, which occurred on 2022 September 5. In situ measurements from the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft near perihelion suggest two shocks, with the second one decayed, which is consistent with more than one eruption in coronagraph images. Despite a flank crossing, the measurements indicate unique features of the young ejecta: a plasma much hotter than the ambient medium, suggestive of a hot solar source, and a large plasma β implying a highly non-force-free state and the importance of thermal pressure gradient for CME acceleration and expansion. Reconstruction of the global coronal magnetic fields shows a long-duration change in the heliospheric current sheet (HCS), and the observed field polarity reversals agree with a more warped HCS configuration. Reconnection signatures are observed inside an HCS crossing as deep as the sonic critical point. As the reconnection occurs in the sub-Alfvénic wind, the reconnected flux sunward of the reconnection site can close back to the Sun, which helps balance magnetic flux in the heliosphere. The nature of the sub-Alfvénic wind after the HCS crossing as a low Mach-number boundary layer (LMBL) leads to in situ measurements of the near subsonic plasma at a surprisingly large distance. Specifically, an LMBL may provide favorable conditions for the crossings of the sonic critical point in addition to the Alfvén surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we report on small-scale magnetic flux ropes (SMFRs) observed as a compact series in a narrow Carrington longitudinal range during three Parker Solar Probe (PSP) encounters. First, during ∼1.5 days of PSP's inbound part of Encounter 4, we identified a series of 11 SMFRs within 1.°4 in longitude over the radial distance of ∼8.4 R ☉ (from ∼44 to 35 R ☉). The identified SMFRs lasted from ∼0.5 to 1.8 hr, and adjacent events were separated mostly by a few hours and up to ∼6.5 hr at the longest, but some events were very closely spaced with intervals of a few ∼tens of minutes or less apart. Most of the identified SMFRs are successfully fitted to the force-free model. The SMFRs are clearly distinguished from the surroundings by a notable reduction in plasma β, which itself was comparably low (less than unity) in the background plasma. Furthermore, the magnetic field and plasma flow within the SMFRs fluctuated significantly less than the more turbulent surroundings. The fluctuations in the surrounding medium exhibited occasional Br polarity reversal (possibly switchbacks) and were Alfvénic to a large extent with far weaker compressional components. The majority of these key features with some differences have also been found in the series of SMFRs and their surroundings identified within 1.°3 or less in longitude during Encounters 1 and 5. We speculate that these SMFRs were repetitively generated by successive reconnection within a very narrow angular zone located close to the Sun but not necessarily at the same radial position. Magnetic reconnection in the lower atmosphere is a critical process in determining the chromospheric dynamics, such as Ellerman bombs and UV bursts. Because the heating of the atmosphere significantly depends on the ionization degree and plasma β, which varies with height, it is essential to diagnose the height at which the magnetic reconnection takes place. Multiwavelength spectropolarimetry is a powerful solution to fulfill this requirement. We verify the diagnostic capabilities and usefulness of near-infrared multiwavelength spectropolarimetric observations for understanding magnetic reconnection phenomena by synthesizing the Stokes vector from a realistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation. The analysis considers two magnetic reconnection regions occurring at different heights. In the case of magnetic reconnection at low altitude, both red- and blueshifted components originating from reconnection bidirectional flow are identified in the photospheric lines, Fe i 8468 Å, K i 7664 Å, and K i 7698 Å. In the case of magnetic reconnection at high altitudes, chromospheric lines, Ca ii 8498 Å and 8542 Å, show emission due to the heating that occurs at the upper part of the formation layer. These results suggest that multiwavelength spectropolarimetric observations are capable of distinguishing the height where magnetic reconnection occurs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a failed solar filament eruption that involves external magnetic reconnection in a quadrupolar magnetic configuration. The evolution exhibits three phases of kinematic evolution: a slow rise, an acceleration, and a deceleration. In the early slow rise, extreme-ultraviolet brightenings appear at the expected null point above the filament and are connected to the outer polarities by the hot loops, indicating the occurrence of a breakout reconnection. Subsequently, the filament is accelerated outward, accompanied by the formation of low-lying high-temperature post-flare loops (>15 MK), complying with the standard flare model. However, after 2–3 minutes, the erupting filament starts to decelerate and is finally confined in the corona. The important finding is that the confinement is closely related to an external reconnection as evidenced by the formation of high-lying large-scale hot loops (>10 MK) with their brightened footpoints at the outer polarities, the fragmentation and subsequent falling of the filament along the newly formed large-scale loops, as well as a hard X-ray source close to one of the outer footpoint brightenings. We propose that, even though the initial breakout reconnection and subsequent flare reconnection commence and accelerate the filament eruption, the following external reconnection between the erupting flux rope and overlying field, as driven by the upward filament eruption, causes the eruption to finally fail, as validated by the numerical simulation of a failed flux rope eruption. The exploration of the inner heliosphere by the Parker Solar Probe has revealed a highly structured solar wind with ubiquitous deflections from the Parker spiral, known as switchbacks. Interchange reconnection (IR) may play an important role in generating these switchbacks, by forming unstable particle distributions that generate wave activity that in turn may evolve to such structures. IR occurs in very low-beta plasmas and in the presence of strong guiding fields. Although IR is unlikely to release enough energy to provide an important contribution to the heating and acceleration of the solar wind, it affects the way the solar wind is connected to its sources, connecting open field lines to regions of closed fields. This "switching on" provides a mechanism by which the plasma near coronal hole boundaries can mix with that trapped inside the closed loops. This mixing can lead to a new energy balance. It may significantly change the characteristics of the solar wind because this plasma is already preheated and can potentially have quite different density and particle distributions. It not only replenishes the solar wind, but also affects the electric field, which in turn affects the energy balance. This interpenetration is manifested by the formation of a bimodal ion distribution, with a core and a beam-like population. Such distributions are indeed frequently observed by the Parker Solar Probe. Here we provide a first step toward assessing the role of such processes in accelerating and heating the solar wind. Filaments are one of the most common features in the solar atmosphere and are of significance in solar, stellar, and laboratory plasma physics. Using data from the Chinese H α Solar Explorer, the Solar Upper Transition Region Imager, and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we report on multiwavelength imaging and spectral observations of the activation of a small filament. The filament activation produces several localized dynamic brightenings, which are probably produced by internal reconnections of the braided magnetic fields in the filament. The filament expands during the activation, and its threads reconnect with the ambient magnetic fields, which leads to the formation of hot arcades or loops overlying the filament. The thermal energy of each of these localized brightenings is estimated in the order of 1025–1027 erg, and the total energy is estimated to be ∼1.77 × 1028 erg. Our observations demonstrate that the internal magnetic reconnections in the filament can lead to localized heating in the filament threads and prompt external reconnections with ambient corona structures and thus could contribute to the energy and mass transferring into the corona. We investigate the origin of mesoscale structures in the solar wind called microstreams, defined as enhancements in the solar wind speed and temperature that last several hours. They were first clearly detected in Helios and Ulysses solar wind data and are now omnipresent in the "young" solar wind measured by the Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter. These recent data reveal that microstreams transport a profusion of Alfvénic perturbations in the form of velocity spikes and magnetic switchbacks. In this study, we use a very-high-resolution 2.5D MHD model of the corona and the solar wind to simulate the emergence of magnetic bipoles interacting with the preexisting ambient corona and the creation of jets that become microstreams propagating in the solar wind. Our high-resolution simulations reach sufficiently high Lundquist numbers that capture the tearing mode instability that develops in the reconnection region and produces plasmoids released with the jet into the solar wind. Our domain runs from the lower corona to 20 R ⊙, which allows us to track the formation process of plasmoids and their evolution into Alfvénic velocity spikes. We obtain perturbed solar wind flows lasting several hours with velocity spikes occurring at characteristic periodicities of about 19 minutes. We retrieve several properties of the microstreams measured in the pristine solar wind by the Parker Solar Probe, namely an increase in wind velocity of about 100 km s−1 during a stream's passage together with superposed velocity spikes of also about 100 km s−1 released into the solar wind. On 2024 May 10–11, the strongest geomagnetic storm since 2003 November occurred, with a peak Dst index of −412 nT. The storm was caused by NOAA active region (AR) 13664, which was the source of a large number of coronal mass ejections and flares, including 12 X-class flares. Starting from about May 7, AR 13664 showed a steep increase in its size and (free) magnetic energy, along with increased flare activity. In this study, we perform 3D magnetic field extrapolations with the NF2 nonlinear force-free code based on physics-informed neural networks (R. Jarolim et al.). In addition, we introduce the computation of the vector potential to achieve divergence-free solutions. We extrapolate vector magnetograms from the Solar Dynamics Observatory’s Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager at the full 12 minute cadence from 2024 May 5 00:00 to 11 04:36 UT, in order to understand the AR’s magnetic evolution and the large eruptions it produced. A decrease in the calculated relative free magnetic energy can be related to solar flares in ∼90% of the cases, and all considered X-class flares are reflected by a decrease in the relative free magnetic energy. Regions of enhanced free magnetic energy and depleted magnetic energy between the start and end times of major X-class flares show spatial alignment with brightness increases in extreme-ultraviolet observations. We provide a detailed analysis of the X3.9-class flare on May 10, where we show that the interaction between separated magnetic domains is directly linked to major flaring events. With this study, we provide a comprehensive data set of the magnetic evolution of AR 13664 and make it publicly available for further analysis.

Although extensive research on magnetic reconnection, e.g., current sheets, inflows/outflows, and plasma ejections, has been done, the dynamical evolution of newly formed structures during and after the reconnection between two sets of atmospheric structures is rarely studied. Here we investigate five reconnection events based on observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the New Vacuum Solar Telescope. In each event, two independent atmospheric structures are involved. While they meet, a plasma sheet is detected. After exchanging topological connectivity, new structures are formed in the outflow regions. For each new structure, it is composed of a part of one original structure and that of the other one. In this Letter, for the first time, we find that there are two types of evolution patterns of the new structures. The first type is that the new structures move away from the reconnection position as a whole and then undergo a to-and-fro motion (an oscillation). The second is that the new structures display a “throwing whip” movement. We suggest that the evolution patterns are relevant to the topological configuration of the original structures and the position of the reconnection site.

Magnetic reconnection plays a crucial role in the energy release process for different kinds of solar eruptions and activities. The rapid solar eruption requires a fast reconnection model. Plasmoid instability in the reconnecting current sheets is one of the most acceptable fast reconnection mechanisms for explaining the explosive events in the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scale, which is also a potential bridge between the macroscopic MHD reconnection process and microscale dissipations. Plenty of high-resolution observations indicate that the plasmoid-like structures exist in the high-temperature solar corona, but such evidences are very rare in the lower solar atmosphere with partially ionized plasmas. Utilizing joint observations from the Goode Solar Telescope and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we discovered a small-scale eruptive phenomenon in NOAA Active Region 13085, characterized by clear reconnection cusp structures, supported by nonlinear force-free field extrapolation results. The plasmoid-like structures with a size of about 150 km were observed to be ejected downward from the current sheet at a maximum velocity of 24 km s ^−1 in the H α line wing images, followed by enhanced emissions at around the postflare loop region in multiple wavelengths. Our 2.5D high-resolution MHD simulations further reproduced such a phenomenon and revealed reconnection fine structures. These results provide comprehensive evidences for the plasmoid-mediated reconnection in partially ionized plasmas, and suggest a unified reconnection model for solar flares with different length scales from the lower chromosphere to the corona.

Lunar crustal magnetic anomalies (LCMA) are sub-ion-gyroradius structures that have been shown to stand off the solar wind (SW) plasma from the Moon’s surface, forming shock-like discontinuities and reflecting incident SW protons. In this Letter, the results of high-resolution, 2D fully kinetic simulations show a bursty electron-only magnetic reconnection in the SW-LCMA interaction region, characterized by the quasiperiodic formation and ejection of magnetic islands and strong parallel electron flows along the X-point separator lines. The islands are observed to modify the magnetic pressure pileup and Hall electric field above the LCMA, leading to sharp increases in reflected protons that drive electromagnetic fluctuations downstream and short distances upstream in the SW.

Fan-spine magnetic structure, as a fundamental three-dimensional topology in magnetic reconnection theory, plays a crucial role in producing solar jets. However, how fan-spine configurations form in the solar atmosphere remains elusive. Using the Chinese H α Solar Explorer (CHASE) and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we present a case study on the complete buildup of fan-spine topology driven by flux emergence and the subsequent jet production. Two fan-spine structures and the two associated null points are present. Variations in null-point heights and locations were tracked over time during flux emergence. The north fan-spine structure is found to be created through magnetic reconnection between the newly emerged flux and the background field. Gentle reconnection persistently occurs after formation of the north fan-spine structure, resulting in weak plasma outflows. Subsequently, as flux emergence and magnetic helicity injection continue, the formation and eruption of minifilaments after reconnection at the quasi-separatrix layer between the two nulls trigger three homologous jets. The CHASE observations reveal that the circular flare ribbon, inner bright patch, and remote brightening all exhibit redshifted signatures during these jet ejections. This work unveils the key role of flux emergence in the formation of fan-spine topology, and highlights the importance of minifilaments for subsequent jet production.

Space-based observations show that the solar atmosphere from the solar chromosphere to the solar corona is filled with small-scale jets and is linked with small-scale explosions. These jets may be produced by mechanisms similar to those of large-scale flares and such jets may be related to the heating of the corona and chromosphere as well as the acceleration of solar wind. The chromospheric anemone jets on the Sun remain puzzling because their footpoints (or bright knots) have not been well resolved and the formation process of such enigmatic small-scale jets remains unclear. We propose a new model for chromospheric jets using the 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations, which show that the continuous, upward rising of small-scale twisted magnetic flux ropes in a magnetized solar chromosphere drives small-scale magnetic reconnection and the launching of several small-scale jets during the evolution of the chromospheric anemone jets. Our new, self-consistent, 3D computer modeling of small-scale, but ever-changing flux rope emergence in the magnetized solar atmosphere is fully consistent with observations and provides a universal mechanism for nanoflare and jet formation.

The coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed by white-light coronagraphs, such as the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) C2/C3, commonly exhibit the three-part structure, with the bright leading edge as the outermost part. In this work, we extend previous work on the leading edge by performing a large-scale 3D magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulation on the evolution of an eruptive magnetic flux rope (MFR) in a near-Sun region based on a radially stretched calculation grid in spherical coordination and the incorporation of solar wind. In the early stage, the new simulation almost repeats the previous results, i.e., the expanding eruptive MFR and associated CME bubble interact with the ambient magnetic field, which leads to the appearance of the helical current ribbon/boundary (HCB) wrapping around the MFR. The HCB can be interpreted as a possible mechanism of the CME leading edge. Later, the CME bubble propagates self-consistently to a larger region beyond a few solar radii from the solar center, similar to the early stage of evolution. The continuous growth and propagation of the CME bubbles leading to the HCB can be traced across the entire near-Sun region. Furthermore, we can observe the HCB in the white-light synthetic images as a bright front feature in the large field of view of LASCO C2 and C3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We observe an enhanced stellar wind mass-loss rate from low-mass stars exhibiting higher X-ray flux. This trend, however, does not align with the Sun, where no evident correlation between X-ray flux and mass-loss rate is present. To reconcile these observations, we propose a hybrid model for the stellar wind from solar-type stars, incorporating both Alfvén wave dynamics and flux emergence-driven interchange reconnection, an increasingly studied concept guided by the latest heliospheric observations. For establishing a mass-loss rate scaling law, we perform a series of magnetohydrodynamic simulations across varied magnetic activities. Through a parameter survey concerning the surface (unsigned) magnetic flux (Φsurf) and the open-to-surface magnetic flux ratio (ξ open = Φopen/Φsurf), we derive a scaling law of the mass-loss rate given by M ̇ w / M ̇ w , ⊙ = Φ surf / Φ ⊙ surf 0.52 ξ open / ξ ⊙ open 0.86 , where M ̇ w , ⊙ = 2.0 × 10 − 14 M ⊙ yr − 1 , Φ ⊙ surf = 3.0 × 10 23 Mx , and ξ ⊙ open = 0.2. By comparing cases with and without flux emergence, we find that the increase in the mass-loss rate with the surface magnetic flux can be attributed to the influence of flux emergence. Our scaling law demonstrates an agreement with solar wind observations spanning 40 yr, exhibiting superior performance when compared to X-ray-based estimations. Anomalous ion heating is frequently observed to accompany magnetic reconnection, yet there is little consensus on its origin. Instead of the usual velocity-space analysis, we use phase-space analysis to exhaustively explain how ions are nonthermally energized during collisionless, antiparallel magnetic reconnection. There are both ordered and disordered aspects in the process; the former is explained in terms of conservative quantities, and the latter is explained by demonstrating chaos through a direct calculation of Lyapunov exponents. The former induces "multibeam-like heating" in all three directions, whereas the latter induces stochastic bulk heating. Profiles of the ion temperature tensor components during reconnection can be easily understood by the phase-space distributions of ions in different motional stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the magnetic field structures of solar filaments have been studied for several decades, the detailed evolution of the structure around a filament prior to its eruption is rarely observed. On 2021 October 28 in AR 12887, a major solar flare (X1.0 class) occurred at 15:35 UT. Based on the Solar Dynamics Observatory high-spatial-resolution observations, we find this flare is associated with the eruption of two filaments, namely F1 and F2. The two filaments are initially independent. The western leg (WLEG) of F1 approaches the northern leg of F2, due to the continuous movement and rotation of the magnetic field in which the WLEG roots in. We find first that there are some threads wrapping the WLEG. Brightening and bidirectionally plasmoid flows that originate from a brightening are detected in these threads, then the threads disappear, and the two filaments connect. NLFFF extrapolation reveals that there is a toroidal magnetic structure enveloping the WLEG and corresponding spatially to the threads. It is expected that a filament is enveloped by toroidal magnetic fields. According to the observations and extrapolation, we suggest that these threads represent the toroidal magnetic fields wrapping the WLEG. This paper provides new details about the dynamics of the toroidal magnetic fields. Magnetic reconnection takes place in the toroidal fields and thus destroys the fields, then F1 and F2 connect, and subsequently, the two filaments erupt and the flare occurs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Turbulence plays a key role in forming the complex geometry of the large-scale current sheet (CS) and fast energy release in a solar eruption. In this paper, we present full 3D high-resolution simulations for the process of a moderate coronal mass ejection (CME) and the thermodynamical evolution of the highly confined CS. Copious elongated blobs are generated owing to tearing and plasmoid instabilities, giving rise to a higher reconnection rate, and undergo the splitting, merging, and kinking processes in a more complex way in 3D. A detailed thermodynamical analysis shows that the CS is mainly heated by adiabatic and numerical viscous terms, and thermal conduction is the dominant factor that balances the energy inside the CS. Accordingly, the temperature of the CS reaches to a maximum of about 20 MK, and the range of temperatures is relatively narrow. From the face-on view in the synthetic Atmospheric Imaging Assembly 131 Å, the downflowing structures with similar morphology to supra-arcade downflows are mainly located between the post-flare loops and loop top, while moving blobs can extend spikes higher above the loop top. The downward-moving plasmoids can keep the twisted magnetic field configuration until the annihilation at the flare loop top, indicating that plasmoid reconnection dominates in the lower CS. Meanwhile, the upward-moving ones turn into turbulent structures before arriving at the bottom of the CME, implying that turbulent reconnection dominates in the upper CS. The spatial distributions of the turbulent energy and anisotropy are addressed, which show a significant variation in the spectra with height. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent spacecraft observations have shown that magnetic reconnection occurs commonly in turbulent environments at shocks. At quasi-perpendicular shocks, magnetic field lines are bent by the back-streaming reflected ions, which form a current sheet in the foot region, and then electron-scale reconnection occurs when the current sheet is fragmented at the shock front. Here we study magnetic reconnection at a quasi-perpendicular shock by using a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. Collective properties of the reconnection sites from the shock transition to the downstream region are analyzed by adopting a statistical approach to the simulation data. Reconnecting current sheets are found to be densely distributed near the shock front, with a reconnection electric field larger than those in the downstream region. By tracing a reconnection site from its formation until it is convected downstream, we show the reconnection proceeds intermittently after an active stage near the shock front. Our tracing further shows that, in addition to being originated from the shock front, reconnection in the downstream region can also occur locally, driven by turbulent flows therein. Although magnetic reconnection plays a key role in the formation of a solar filament, the detailed formation process is still ambiguous. Combining the observational data from the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we analyzed the formation of a U -shaped filament via successive magnetic reconnection in the AR NOAA 11598 on 2012 October 25. The successive reconnection occurred between a filament (F) and its nearby chromospheric fibrils (CF). The associated brightening and magnetic cancellation were observed. The changes in appearance of the CF at the reconnection site were accompanied by the formation and accumulation of some new magnetic loops, as well as plasmas propagated along the formed magnetic loops from the reconnection site, indicating the changes in the topology of the F and CF. These can provide comprehensive observational evidence for successive reconnection. After the reconnection, a longer U -shaped filament was formed. During the formation of the U -shaped filament, two major magnetic energy releases took place. While in the two energy release processes, the injected plasma from the reconnection site can provide part of the material for the formation of the U -shaped filament. Therefore, we conclude that the successive reconnection results in both the dynamical evolution and the subsequent formation associated with the U -shaped filament. And the results of nonlinear force-free field extrapolation demonstrated that the magnetic topology of the F was changed significantly; this is consistent with the observational results and further confirms the formation of the U -shaped filament. Plasma energization and thermalization in magnetic reconnection is an important topic in astrophysical studies. We select two magnetic reconnection exhausts encountered by Solar Orbiter and analyze the associated ion heating in the kinetic regime. Both cases feature asymmetric plasma merging in the exhaust and anisotropic heating. For a quantitative investigation of the associated complex velocity-space structures, we adopt a three-dimensional Hermite representation of the proton velocity distribution function to produce the distribution of Hermite moments. We also derive the enstrophy and Hermite spectra to analyze the free energy conversion and transfer in phase space. We find a depletion of Hermite power at small m (corresponding to large-scale structures in velocity space) inside the reconnection exhaust region, concurrent with enhanced proton temperature and decreased enstrophy. Furthermore, the slopes of the 1D time-averaged parallel Hermite spectra are lower inside the exhaust and consistent with the effect of phase mixing that creates small fluctuations in velocity space. These fluctuations store free energy at higher m and are smoothed by weak collisionality, leading to irreversible thermalization. We also suggest that the perpendicular heating may happen via perpendicular phase mixing resulting from finite Larmor radius effects around the exhaust boundary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we reanalyze the X1.7 class limb flare that occurred on 2013 May 13 (SOL2013-05-13T01:56 UT), concentrating on the energy-releasing process using microwave observations mainly made by Nobeyama and X-ray observations made by RHESSI. The analysis was carried out in the context of EUV observations made by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board Solar Dynamics Observatory. First, we complement the initiation process by showing that the initiation occurred together with material falling from a large-scale overlying prominence, a signature of drainage instability. The usual downward and upward motions of the microwave and X-ray sources are observed from their evolution. However, the microwave source's height shows a recurrent decrease and increase during its overall upward motion; it shows a kind of recurrent contraction and expansion. The time period of the recurrent contraction and expansion corresponds to the period of post-contraction oscillation of EUV loops, and the oscillatory motions are closely correlated with four microwave/hard X-ray peaks that unusually increased nonthermal emission levels by several times. X-ray spectra get hardened during the oscillation. In addition, the rapid contraction of magnetic loops located on the outside of the erupting flux rope occurs 5 minutes after the onset of the flare, showing that the contraction of the peripheral magnetic loops is more likely due to the vortex and sink flows generated by an upward erupting magnetic flux rope rather than a coronal implosion. The Larmor electric field (LEF) was previously suggested as a signature to identify the diffusion region in asymmetry reconnection. Using 2.5D particle-in-cell simulations, we show that the LEF also exists in symmetric reconnection, manifested as a transient structure upstream of the Hall electric field. The LEF emerges during the rapid growth phase of the reconnection rate and has opposite polarity to the Hall field. The half-width of the current sheet spontaneously decreases to the electron scale as the evolution of reconnection, which gives rise to the LEF. The current sheet later thickens to maintain the fast reconnection rate, which causes the disappearance of the LEF. We further find that the magnitude of LEF is sensitive to the initial half-width current sheet, the background plasma temperature and density, the guide-field strength, and the ion–electron mass ratio. Our results provide new insight into the dynamics around the diffusion region. The LEF can help satellites not only locate the diffusion region but also identify the onset phase of reconnection in the magnetotail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nested ring-shaped line-of-sight (LOS) oriented flows in coronal cavities have been observed in recent years but rarely explained. Using a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a prominence-cavity system, we investigate the relationship between the simulated field-aligned flows, magnetic reconnection flows, and the LOS-oriented flows observed by the Coronal Multi-Channel Polarimeter. The field-aligned flows are along magnetic field lines toward the dips and driven by the hydrodynamic forces exerted by the prominence condensation. The reconnection flows are driven by the overlying reconnection and tether-cutting reconnection. The velocity of the reconnection flows increases from the quasi-static phase to the fast-rise phase, reaching several kilometers per second, which is similar to the speed of the field-aligned flows. We calculate the synthetic Doppler images by forward modeling and compare them with the observed LOS-oriented flows. The synthetic images show that the LOS-oriented flows of one ring with opposite internal flow driven by the field-aligned flows are identified in the simulation. And the synthetic images integrated along three different LOSs can resemble the observed direction reversal of the LOS-oriented flow in about 20 hr, when the included angle of two adjacent LOSs is about 10°. These results suggest that the observed LOS-oriented flows of one ring with an opposite internal flow may be explained by the LOS integration effect of field-aligned flows along different loops. Coronal jets are eruptions identified by a collimated, sometimes twisted spire. They are small-scale energetic events compared with flares. Using multiwavelength observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly and a magnetogram from Hinode/Spectro-Polarimeter (Hinode/SP), we study the formation and evolution of a jet occurring on 2019 March 22 in NOAA Active Region 12736. A zero- β magnetohydrodynamic simulation is conducted to probe the initiation mechanisms and appearance of helical motion during this jet event. As the simulation reveals, there are two pairs of field lines at the jet base, indicating two distinct magnetic structures. One structure outlines a flux rope lying low above the photosphere in the north of a bald patch region, and the other structure shows a null point high in the corona in the south. The untwisting motions of the observed flux rope were recovered by adding an anomalous (artificial) resistivity in the simulation. A reconnection occurs at the bald patch in the flux rope structure, which is moving upward and simultaneously encounters the field lines of the null point structure. The interaction of the two structures results in the jet, while the twist of the flux rope is transferred to the jet by the reconnected field lines. The rotational motion of the flux rope is proposed to be an underlying trigger of this process and responsible for helical motions in the jet spire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Connecting the solar wind observed throughout the heliosphere to its origins in the solar corona is one of the central aims of heliophysics. The variability in the magnetic field, bulk plasma, and heavy ion composition properties of the slow wind are thought to result from magnetic reconnection processes in the solar corona. We identify regions of enhanced variability and composition in the solar wind from 2003 April 15 to May 13 (Carrington Rotation 2002), observed by the Wind and Advanced Composition Explorer spacecraft, and demonstrate their relationship to the separatrix–web (hereafter, S-Web) structures describing the corona's large-scale magnetic topology. There are four pseudostreamer (PS) wind intervals and two helmet streamer (HS) heliospheric current sheet/plasma sheet crossings (and an interplanetary coronal mass ejection), which all exhibit enhanced alpha-to-proton ratios and/or elevated ionic charge states of carbon, oxygen, and iron. We apply the magnetic helicity–partial variance of increments (H m –PVI) procedure to identify coherent magnetic structures and quantify their properties during each interval. The mean duration of these structures are ∼1 hr in both the HS and PS wind. We find a modest enhancement above the power-law fit to the PVI waiting-time distribution in the HS-associated wind at the 1.5–2 hr timescales that is absent from the PS intervals. We discuss our results in the context of previous observations of the ∼90 minutes periodic density structures in the slow solar wind, further development of the dynamic S-Web model, and future Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter joint observational campaigns. Energetic electrons have been frequently observed during magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail. The acceleration process of the energetic electrons is not fully understood. In this paper, we select for a detailed study a case of energetic electron acceleration from the earlier reported interval of turbulent magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetotail observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. We use the first-order Taylor expansion method to reconstruct the magnetic topology of electron acceleration sites from the data. We find that the energetic electron fluxes increase inside the flux rope forming in front of the magnetic pileup region. We show that the energetic electrons are produced by a two-step process where two different acceleration mechanisms are successively operating outside and inside the flux rope. First, the thermal electrons are energized in the field-aligned direction inside the magnetic pileup region owing to the Fermi mechanism forming a cigar-like distribution. Second, those energized electrons are further accelerated predominately antiparallel to the magnetic field direction by a parallel electric field inside the flux rope. With high spatial and temporal resolution data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the New Vacuum Solar Telescope (NVST), we present observations of recurrent jets confined by coronal loops that occurred in the active region NOAA 11726 from 02:00 to 12:00 UT on 2013 April 21. Three jets are clearly observed by the NVST in H α line. These recurrent jets originate from the emerging bipolar magnetic region at the north of the active region. Half of them are related to the magnetic flux emergence, and the others are associated with the magnetic flux cancellation. Their velocities range from 80.6 ± 1.3 km s−1 to 433.6 ± 20.1 km s−1. Though they eject from the same source region, their shapes, sizes, and eruptive trajectories are not exactly the same. Most of them consist of cool (dark) and hot (bright) components. The differential emission measure distributions of the recurrent jets suggest that they are multithermal structures. The rotation directions of the recurrent jets are not consistent. Eight of them have a counterclockwise rotation, and the others have a clockwise rotation. The 12 recurrent jets are classified as blowout (accounting for 33%) and standard (accounting for 67%) jets. The velocity and density range of the blowout jets are slightly wider than those of the standard jets. The blowout jets have lower temperatures than the standard jets. These observational results suggest that the recurrent jets are probably triggered by recurrent magnetic reconnection between the emerging bipolar magnetic region and its overlying large-scale active region loops. We present observations and interpretation of a nonerupting filament in NOAA active region (AR) 12827 that undergoes splitting and restructuring on 2021 June 4, using the high-resolution data obtained by the New Vacuum Solar Telescope, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. At the beginning, the right footpoint of the filament is rooted in the AR positive polarity, and its right leg has a spread-out structure, which is confirmed by the extrapolated 3D magnetic structure. Many small positive and negative magnetic polarities connected by EUV-emitting loops gradually appear between two extensions of the right footpoint polarity as the extensions separate. The right leg of the filament is then observed to split into two parts, which continue to separate, while the left part of the filament still maintains a whole structure. As the newly emerged magnetic loops rise between the two parts of the right leg, magnetic reconnection occurs between the newly emerged magnetic loops and the magnetic fields supporting the southeastern splitting part. The longer magnetic loops resulting from this reconnection merge with the magnetic fields of the other part of the split filament leg, thus reforming an entire filament with a displaced right footpoint. We conclude that magnetic emergence is responsible for the splitting of the filament leg, while magnetic reconnection leads to the reconstruction of the filament. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present EUV solar observations showing evidence for omnipresent jetting activity driven by small-scale magnetic reconnection at the base of the solar corona. We argue that the physical mechanism that heats and drives the solar wind at its source is ubiquitous magnetic reconnection in the form of small-scale jetting activity (a.k.a. jetlets). This jetting activity, like the solar wind and the heating of the coronal plasma, is ubiquitous regardless of the solar cycle phase. Each event arises from small-scale reconnection of opposite-polarity magnetic fields producing a short-lived jet of hot plasma and Alfvén waves into the corona. The discrete nature of these jetlet events leads to intermittent outflows from the corona, which homogenize as they propagate away from the Sun and form the solar wind. This discovery establishes the importance of small-scale magnetic reconnection in solar and stellar atmospheres in understanding ubiquitous phenomena such as coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Based on previous analyses linking the switchbacks to the magnetic network, we also argue that these new observations might provide the link between the magnetic activity at the base of the corona and the switchback solar wind phenomenon. These new observations need to be put in the bigger picture of the role of magnetic reconnection and the diverse form of jetting in the solar atmosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although numerous works have concentrated on minifilament eruption in complex configurations, the detailed triggering mechanism is still an open question. Using the observational data from the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and Solar Dynamics Observatory, we studied a two-step magnetic reconnection process that triggered a minifilament that erupted intermittently within a fan-spine structure in the active region NOAA 13272. The first-step reconnection occurred between a set of low-lying small-scale magnetic loops and their nearby inner spine, resulting in the appearance of a brightening at the reconnection site and the reconfiguration of the inner spine. As the reconfigured inner spine approached the outer spine, reconnection occurred between them at the null point and led to the minifilament erupting partially. Subsequently, this two-step reconnection scenario occurred again and triggered the minifilament to erupt completely. The null point reconnection was supported by the changes in the topological structure of the inner spine and the outer spine, circular ribbon flares, remote brightenings, and the brightening of the outer spine. The null point reconnection related to the second eruption was also confirmed by some plasmoids expelled from the reconnection site. Further, the results of the magnetic field extrapolation reveal the existence of a fan-spine structure involving a three-dimensional null point. We suggest that the two-step reconnection triggers the two eruptions, in which the null point reconnection plays a direct role, but the dynamical evolution of the inner spine and the outer spine driven by the first-step reconnection might be a precursor of the subsequent null point reconnection.

Poynting flux generated by random shuffling of photospheric magnetic footpoints is transferred through the upper atmosphere of the Sun where the plasma is heated to over 1 MK in the corona. High spatiotemporal resolution observations of the lower atmosphere at the base of coronal magnetic loops are crucial to better understand the nature of the footpoint dynamics and the details of magnetic processes that eventually channel energy into the corona. Here, we report high spatial resolution (∼0.″1) and cadence (1.33 s) hyperspectral imaging of the solar H α line, acquired by the Microlensed Hyperspectral Imager prototype installed at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope, that reveal photospheric hot spots at the base of solar coronal loops. These hot spots manifest themselves as H α wing enhancements, occurring on small spatial scales of ∼0.″2, and timescales of less than 100 s. By assuming that the H α wings and the continuum form under the local thermodynamic equilibrium condition, we inverted the H α line profiles and found that the hot spots are compatible with a temperature increase of about 1000 K above the ambient quiet-Sun temperature. The H α wing integrated Stokes V / I maps indicate that hot spots are related to magnetic patches with field strengths comparable to or even stronger that the surrounding network elements. But they do not show the presence of parasitic polarity magnetic field that would support the interpretation that these hot spots are reconnection-driven Ellerman bombs. Therefore, we interpret these features as proxies of locations where convection-driven magnetic field intensification in the photosphere can lead to energy transfer into higher layers. We suggest that such hot spots at coronal loop footpoints may be indicative of the specific locations and onset of energy flux injection into the upper atmosphere.

Large gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) events can pose a radiation risk to crewed spaceflight and a significant threat to near-Earth satellites; however, the origin of the SEP seed particle population, and how these particles are released, accelerated and transported into the heliosphere are not well understood. We analyze NOAA active region (AR) 12673, which was the source responsible for multiple large gradual SEP events during 2017 September, and found that almost immediately after each significant eruptive event associated with SEPs an enhanced Si/S abundance ratio was measured by Wind, consistent with the previous work by Brooks et al. The EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode took data roughly 8 hr before the second SEP event on 2017 September 6, which allowed the regions of enhanced Si/S abundance ratio in the AR to be determined. We have shown that the AR contains plasma with elemental abundance values detected in situ by Wind. In particular, the plasma originates from the core of the AR, similar to Brooks et al., but in the moss (footpoints) associated with hot sigmoidal AR loops. The sigmoid, which contains highly fractionated plasma, erupts and propagates toward an Earth-connected magnetic null point, providing a direct channel for the highly fractionated plasma to escape and be detected in the near-Earth environment.

We report an M9.3 flare and filaments activities from NOAA Active Region 11261 that are strongly modulated by the 3D magnetic skeleton. Magnetic field extrapolation from the vector magnetic field suggests complex magnetic connectivity and the existence of a high coronal null point southeast of the active region. A small filament over the inversed V-shaped polarity inversion line erupted and resulted in the M9.3 flare associated with a weak ejection in the EUV hot channel and the formation of a relatively large filament. Both the weak ejection and the eruption of the large filament were toward the southeast. Comparative analyses have disclosed the following new facts. First, the trajectory of looptop hard X-ray emission provides solid evidence that the magnetic reconnection site propagated up toward the coronal null point as the flare and filaments erupted. Second, the EVU observations show coronal mass ejection-like eruption features in the ejection region of the magnetic skeleton. Third, the closed fan confined the west end of the large filament and the corresponding flare ribbons. We demonstrate a spatiotemporal relationship between the magnetic skeleton and the flare filament activity. We conclude that the magnetic skeleton can modulate and determine almost all the characteristics of the studied activity in the corresponding scale.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from pseudostreamers represent a significant fraction of large-scale eruptions from the Sun. In some cases, these CMEs take a narrow jet-like form reminiscent of coronal jets; in others, they have a much broader fan-shaped morphology like CMEs from helmet streamers. We present results from a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a broad pseudostreamer CME. The early evolution of the eruption is initiated through a combination of breakout interchange reconnection at the overlying null point and ideal instability of the flux rope that forms within the pseudostreamer. This stage is characterized by a rolling motion and deflection of the flux rope toward the breakout current layer. The stretching out of the strapping field forms a flare current sheet below the flux rope; reconnection onset there forms low-lying flare arcade loops and the two-ribbon flare footprint. Once the CME flux rope breaches the rising breakout current layer, interchange reconnection with the external open field disconnects one leg from the Sun. This induces a whip-like rotation of the flux rope, generating the unstructured fan shape characteristic of pseudostreamer CMEs. Interchange reconnection behind the CME releases torsional Alfvén waves and bursty dense outflows into the solar wind. Our results demonstrate that pseudostreamer CMEs follow the same overall magnetic evolution as coronal jets, although they present different morphologies of their ejecta. We conclude that pseudostreamer CMEs should be considered a class of eruptions that are distinct from helmet-streamer CMEs, in agreement with previous observational studies.

We report new theories and simulations for electron acceleration in magnetic islands generated by magnetic reconnection in the shock turbulence in a quasi-parallel shock, using a 2 and 1/2 dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. When an island is moving, unmagnetized electrons are accelerated by the Hall electric field pointing toward the island center. In a stationary island, some electrons are energized by “island betatron acceleration” due to the induction electric field when the island core magnetic field changes with time. In the simulation, almost all of the high-energy electrons in the shock transition region that show a power-law distribution are accelerated in ion-skin-depth-scale magnetic flux ropes, and about half of them are accelerated by the Hall electric field and island betatron acceleration. These mechanisms can produce a power-law electron distribution, and also inject electrons into the diffusive shock acceleration. The mechanisms are applicable to quasi-parallel shocks with high Alfvén Mach numbers ( M _A > 10), including planetary bow shocks and shocks in astrophysical objects such as supernova remnants.

The present study has investigated the statistical distribution of the current sheet width across the reconnection diffusion region by means of the 3D particle-in-cell simulations. The 3D reconnection layers are unstable to the flow shear instabilities, which results in electromagnetic (EM) turbulence generating effective magnetic dissipation around the x-line. The simulations are performed for several ion-to-electron mass ratios and computational domain sizes, which determine the fastest-growing mode in each simulation run. When the turbulence is weak, the current sheet width increases with the turbulence intensity, following a theoretical curve independent of the mass ratio and domain size. However, when the turbulence is stronger, the width saturates at a low level around 2 times the local electron inertia length, i.e., much smaller than the ion kinetic scales. It is found that the intense inductive electric field due to the EM turbulence is partly canceled out by the eddy viscous effect. As a result, the reconnection electric field is almost unchanged during the quasi-steady phase, regardless of the turbulence intensity. The result implies that the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence models are unlikely to be applicable to the reconnection diffusion region.

Oscillatory reconnection is a specific type of time-dependent reconnection which involves periodic changes in the magnetic topology of a null point. The mechanism has been reported for a variety of magnetic field strengths and configurations, background temperatures, and densities. All these studies report an oscillation in the current density at the null point, but also report a variety of periods, amplitudes, and overall behaviors. We conduct a parametric study for equilibrium magnetic field strength and initial background temperature, solving two-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations around a magnetic X-point. We introduce a parameter space for the ratio of internal to magnetic energy and find self-similar solutions for simulations where this ratio is below 0.1 (which represents a magnetically dominated environment or, equivalently, a low-beta plasma). Self-similarity can be seen in oscillations in the current density at the null (including amplitude and period), ohmic heating, and the temperature generated via reconnection jets. The parameter space of energy ratios also allows us to contextualize previous studies of the oscillatory reconnection mechanism and bring those different studies together into a single unified understanding.

We analyze the spectral properties of ^3 He and ^4 He as well as the heavy ions (oxygen, neon, magnesium, silicon, and iron) in 80 ^3 He-rich solar energetic particle (SEP) events observed by the Ultra-Low-Energy Ion Spectrometer on board the Advanced Composition Explorer spacecraft since its launch in 1997 until 2024. We split the spectral analysis into two criteria: events with fast and wide coronal mass ejections (CMEs; called “FW events”) and events with slow, narrow, or no observed CMEs (called “non-FW events”). Overall, we find that events with fast and wide CMEs exhibit more uniform spectra across all species, and their low-energy spectral indices are strongly correlated, suggesting a CME provides an additional reacceleration mechanism for the ^3 He-rich SEPs. When comparing each species’ low-energy spectral index for events with no associated fast-and-wide CME, we find a primary peak in the spectral hardness of ^3 He, and a secondary peak in Mg and Si. If we consider a plasma temperature of 1.0–1.3 MK, Mg and Si have a charge-to-mass ratio ( Q / M ) nearest to one-third (1/3), directly half that of ^3 He. Thus, our results support the results of Roth & Temerin, which suggest heavy ions resonate with the second harmonic of the same ion cyclotron waves energizing ^3 He. However, it is unclear why the Fe enhancement is not reflected in its spectral index, and we propose that additional acceleration and/or transport mechanisms are playing a role in the abundance enhancement of Fe and heavier ions.

Magnetic reconnection is widely believed to be the fundamental process in the solar atmosphere that underlies magnetic energy release and particle acceleration. This process is responsible for the onset of solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and other explosive events (e.g., jets). Here, we report direct imaging of a prolonged plasma/current sheet along with quasiperiodic magnetic reconnection in the solar corona using ultra-high-resolution observations from the 1.6 m Goode Solar Telescope at the Big Bear Solar Observatory and the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly. The current sheet appeared near a null point in the fan–spine topology and persisted over an extended period (≈20 hr). The length and apparent width of the current sheet were about 6″ and 2″, respectively, and the plasma temperature was ≈10–20 MK. We observed quasiperiodic plasma inflows and outflows (bidirectional jets with plasmoids) at the reconnection site/current sheet. Furthermore, quasiperiodic reconnection at the long-lasting current sheet produced recurrent eruptions (small flares and jets) and contributed significantly to the recurrent impulsive heating of the active region. Direct imaging of a plasma/current sheet and recurrent null-point reconnection for such an extended period has not been reported previously. These unprecedented observations provide compelling evidence that supports the universal model for solar eruptions (i.e., the breakout model) and have implications for impulsive heating of active regions by recurrent reconnection near null points. The prolonged and sustained reconnection for about 20 hr at the breakout current sheet provides new insights into the dynamics and energy release processes in the solar corona.

We analyze the interaction between an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) detected in situ at the L1 Lagrange point on 2016 October 12 with a trailing high-speed stream (HSS). We aim to estimate the region in the interplanetary (IP) space where the interaction happened/started using a combined observational-modeling approach. We use minimum variance analysis (MVA) and the Walen test to analyze possible reconnection exhaust at the interface of ICME and HSS. We perform a graduated cylindrical shell reconstruction of the CME to estimate the geometry and source location of the CME. Finally, we use a two-step drag-based model (DBM) model to estimate the region in IP space where the interaction took place. The magnetic obstacle observed in situ shows a fairly symmetric and undisturbed structure and shows the magnetic flux, helicity, and expansion profile/speed of a typical ICME. The MVA together with the Walen test, however, confirms reconnection exhaust at the ICME–HSS boundary. Thus, in situ signatures are in favor of a scenario where the interaction is fairly recent. The trailing HSS shows a distinct velocity profile which first reaches a semi-saturated plateau with an average velocity of 500 km s ^−1 and then saturates at a maximum speed of 710 km s ^−1 . We find that the HSS's interaction with the ICME is influenced only by this initial plateau. The results of the two-step DBM suggest that the ICME has started interacting with the HSS close to Earth (∼0.81 au), which compares well with the deductions from in situ signatures.
