We present the identification and physical analysis of a possible magnetic island feature seen in white-light images observed by the Wide-field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR) on board the Parker Solar Probe. The island is imaged by WISPR during Parker's second solar encounter on 2019 April 6, when Parker was ∼38 R ⊙ from the Sun's center. We report that the average velocity and acceleration of the feature are approximately 334 km s−1 and −0.64 m s−2. The kinematics of the island feature, coupled with its direction of propagation, indicate that the island is likely entrained in the slow solar wind. The island is elliptical in shape with a density deficit in its center, suggesting the presence of a magnetic guide field. We argue that this feature is consistent with the formation of this island via reconnection in the current sheet of the streamer. The feature's aspect ratio (calculated as the ratio of its minor to major axis) evolves from an elliptical to a more circular shape that approximately doubles during its propagation through WISPR's field of view. The island is not distinct in other white-light observations from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory and the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory coronagraphs, suggesting that this is a comparatively faint heliospheric feature and that viewing perspective and WISPR's enhanced sensitivity are key to observing the magnetic island. A radio link directly probing the inner solar corona offers the possibility to characterize solar wind properties, including velocity, density, turbulence, and even the axial ratio. In this study, we leveraged radiometric data obtained during a joint superior solar conjunction of the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission and the JAXA Akatsuki mission. Our objective is to ascertain the solar wind velocity by analysing Doppler-shift timeseries of radio signals exchanged between the two spacecraft and two distinct ground stations. We conducted a cross-correlation analysis to determine the travel time of large-scale plasma density fluctuations as they intersect with the downlink signals of both spacecraft. This method is applied to the data collected on 2021 March 13 and 2021 March 14. The analysis of the March 13 data has shown that the two Doppler residuals timeseries present a clear correlation at a time-lag of 2910 s. Using the knowledge of the relative distance between the two probe-ground station lines of sight at the closest approach to the Sun, we estimated the solar wind velocity to be |$421\pm 21$| km s−1. Following the same procedure for the second experiment, we estimated the solar wind speed velocity to be |$336\pm 7$| km s−1. An analysis of solar flares with simple temporal structures can help us to understand the features and mechanisms of energy and particle propagation. A weak impulsive solar flare that occurred on 2021 June 3 provided such opportunity. For the purposes of the study, we used microwave observations with spatial resolution from the Siberian Radioheliograph (3–6 GHz) combined with various spectral radio and X-ray data. Flare topology analysis revealed a configuration consisting of a small loop or dome-like structure associated with a compact bright source, and a long high loop system associated with the diffuse source. This indicates a compact and relatively low-lying site of acceleration and initial energy release. The radio metre and the microwave emission demonstrated a peak-to-peak correlation in three of the four bursts. The delays obtained from comparing microwave and metre radio ranges are in good agreement with the delays from the metre dynamic spectrum analysis, but the different radio bursts had different delays. We found that the electron energies derived from metre dynamic spectrum analysis are lower than those shown by hard X-ray emissions. According to the results of theoretical simulations, this can be explained by the expansion of magnetic loops with altitude. The difference in drift velocities for various radio bursts can be the result of the different size of the loop where the electron beams are propagated. The current sheet is an essential feature in solar flares and is the primary site for magnetic reconnection and energy release. Imaging observations feature a long linear structure above the candle-flame-shaped flare loops, which resembles the standard flare model with the current sheet viewed edge-on. We investigate the thermal properties of plasmas surrounding the linear sheet during flares, using EUV observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The differential emission measure analyses show evidence of high temperatures in the plasma sheets (PSs), containing hot emissions from only a narrow temperature range, suggestive of an isothermal feature. The sheet temperature remains constant at different heights above the flare arcade, peaking at around log T = 7.0–7.1; while the well-studied 2017 September 10 X8.2 flare serves as an exception in that the temperature decreases with increasing height and peaks higher ( log T = 7.25) during the gradual phase. Most PS cases also hold similar emission measures and thicknesses; while the PS emissions drop exponentially above the flare arcade, the sheet thicknesses show no significant height association as for all the measurements. The characteristics of isothermal and steady temperature suggest balanced heating and cooling processes along the current sheet; in particular, additional heating may exist to compensate for the conductive and radiative cooling away from the reconnection site. Magnetic flux ropes are pivotal structures and building blocks in astrophysical and laboratory plasmas, and various equilibrium models have thus been studied in the past. However, flux ropes in general form at non-equilibrium, and their pathway from formation to relaxation is a crucial process that determines their eventual properties. Here we show that any localized current parallel to a background magnetic field will evolve into a flux rope via non-equilibrium processes. The detailed kinetic dynamics are exhaustively explained through single-particle and Vlasov analyses and verified through particle-in-cell simulations. This process is consistent with many proposed mechanisms of flux rope generation such as magnetic reconnection. A spacecraft observation of an example flux rope is also presented; by invoking the non-equilibrium process, its structure and properties can be explicated down to all six components of the temperature tensor. Flux ropes are fundamental structures that govern much of the dynamics in astrophysical and space plasmas. Coronal mass ejections from the Sun are not always initiated along a radial trajectory; such non-radial eruptions are well known to be caused by the asymmetry of the pre-eruption magnetic configuration, which is primarily determined by the uneven distribution of magnetic flux at the photosphere. Therefore, it is naturally expected that the non-radial eruptions should be rather common, at least as frequent as radial ones, given the typically asymmetrical nature of photospheric magnetic flux. However, statistical studies have shown that only a small fraction of eruptions display non-radial behaviour. Here we aim to shed light on this counterintuitive fact, based on a series of numerical simulations of eruption initiation in bipolar fields with different asymmetric flux distributions. As the asymmetry of the flux distribution increases, the eruption direction tends to deviate further away from the radial path, accompanied by a decrease in eruption intensity. In case of too strong asymmetry, no eruption is triggered, indicating that excessively inclined eruptions cannot occur. Therefore, our simulations suggest that asymmetry plays a negative role in producing eruption, potentially explaining the lesser frequency of non-radial solar eruptions compared to radial ones. With increasing asymmetry, the degree of non-potentiality the field can attain is reduced. Consequently, the intensity of the pre-eruption current sheet decreases, and reconnection becomes less efficient, resulting in weaker eruptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transition from subAlfvénic to superAlfvénic flow in the solar atmosphere is examined by means of Parker Solar Probe (PSP) measurements during solar encounters 8 to 14. Around 220 subAlfvénic periods with a duration ≥10 min are identified. The distribution of their durations, heliocentric distances, and Alfvén Mach number are analysed and compared with a global magnetohydrodynamic model of the solar corona and wind which includes turbulence effects. The results are consistent with a patchy and fragmented morphology, and suggestive of a turbulent Alfvén zone within which the transition from subAlfvénic to superAlfvénic flow occurs over an extended range of helioradii. These results inform and establish context for detailed analyses of subAlfvénic coronal plasma that are expected to emerge from PSP's final mission phase, as well as for NASA's planned PUNCH mission. Waves play an important role in the heating of solar atmosphere; however, observations of wave propagation and damping from the solar photosphere to corona through chromosphere and transition region are very rare. Recent observations have shown propagation of 3-min slow magnetoacoustic waves (SMAWs) along fan loops from the solar photosphere to corona. In this work, we investigate the role of area divergence and frequencies on the damping of SMAWs propagating from the photosphere to the corona along several fan loops rooted in the sunspot umbra. We study the Fourier power spectra of oscillations along fan loops at each atmospheric height which showed significant enhancements in 1–2, 2.3–3.6, and 4.2–6 min period bands. Amplitude of intensity oscillations in different period bands and heights are extracted after normalizing the filtered light curves with low-frequency background. We find damping of SMAW energy flux propagating along the fan loop 6 with damping lengths |$\approx 170$| and |$\approx 208$| km for 1.5- and 3-min period bands. We also show the decay of total wave energy content with height after incorporating area divergence effect, and present actual damping of SMAWs from photosphere to corona. Actual damping lengths in this case increases to |$\approx 172$| and |$\approx 303$| km for 1.5- and 3-min period bands. All the fan loops show such increase in actual damping lengths, and thus highlight the importance of area divergence effect. Results also show some frequency-dependent damping of SMAW energy fluxes with height where high-frequency waves are damped faster than low-frequency waves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coronal heating problem is considered one of the most puzzling problems in solar physics. It is based on the question of why the corona temperature reaches a temperature of over 2 × 10 6 K whereas the temperature of the surface of the sun has about 10 3 - 10 4 K. Since the corona is far away from the source of heat, it is realistic that the outer surface should be cooler. Solar physicists and astrophysicists have tried for several decades to solve this puzzle by supplying heat to the corona, despite several advances in MHD theory, computational and numerical simulations. Although these candidates' sources of energy hold a number of drawbacks, the problem is still open. A motivating approach has been proposed by Walsh which consists of supplying a time-dependent sinusoidal heating function to the heat to preserve the loop at coronal temperature. Yet, the loop temperature at ∼ 2 × 10 6 K is preserved and cools only if a critical frequency is exceeded. In this study, it was found that the MHD formulation of the Walsh approach in fractal dimensions may offer a potential solution to the problem. In particular, oscillations of the temperature in the space-fractal dimension close to unity relax quicker than those with smaller values. For time-fractal dimensions much smaller than unity, the temperature enters a state of steady state oscillations after a long time. Our analyses also reveal irregularities in the propagation of temperature over a long period of time. For low frequency and space-fractal dimensions close to unity and low time-fractal dimensions, the temperature enters a cycle of an oscillating phase by rising and falling gradually. It is probable that the loop will stay hot after a series of cycles, and extended periods of no heating are not possible for small frequencies. Solar type III radio bursts are crucial indicators of energetic electron activity in the solar corona and interplanetary space. Our assessment of 43 interplanetary type III bursts, recorded by the FIELDS instrument on board the Parker Solar Probe during Encounters 05 to 11, has led to significant and complex findings. We have analyzed time profile features across a frequency range of 19–0.5 MHz, revealing dependencies on frequency and providing insights into duration, burst speeds, bandwidths, and drift rates. This novel analysis has unveiled a spectral index of −0.63 ± 0.04 for rise, −0.69 ± 0.03 for decay time, and −0.68 ± 0.03 for the total duration. We have determined the average electron beam velocities for front, middle, and back as 0.15 c, 0.13 c, and 0.08 c, respectively. Our findings show that faster electron beams generate emissions with shorter duration. The average ratio of the front-to-back velocity is 1.87, and the ratio of front-to-middle velocity is 1.23. We have also discovered a strong relationship between burst duration with rise, peak, and decay times, particularly pronounced with decay time (correlation coefficient = 0.95). This indicates that the entire temporal profile, including rise, peak, and decay phases, collectively contributes to event duration and is not solely influenced by external factors like plasma conditions or electron beam dynamics but also by internal burst processes. These complex findings shed light on the physical mechanisms governing burst dynamics, revealing intricate interactions between electron beam characteristics and observed temporal and spectral traits of type III solar radio bursts. After leaving the Sun’s corona, the solar wind continues to accelerate and cools, but more slowly than expected for a freely expanding adiabatic gas. Alfvén waves are perturbations of the interplanetary magnetic field that transport energy. We use in situ measurements from the Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter spacecraft to investigate a stream of solar wind as it traverses the inner heliosphere. The observations show heating and acceleration of the plasma between the outer edge of the corona and near the orbit of Venus, along with the presence of large-amplitude Alfvén waves. We calculate that the damping and mechanical work performed by the Alfvén waves are sufficient to power the heating and acceleration of the fast solar wind in the inner heliosphere. The geomagnetic 'solar flare effect' (SFE) results from excess ionization in the Earth's ionosphere, famously first detected at the time of the Carrington flare in 1859. This indirect detection of a flare constituted one of the first cases of 'multimessenger astronomy', whereby solar ionizing radiation stimulates ionospheric currents. Well-observed SFEs have few-minute time-scales and perturbations of >10 nT, with the greatest events reaching above 100 nT. In previously reported cases, the SFE time profiles tend to resemble those of solar soft X-ray emission, which ionizes the D-region; there is also a less-well-studied contribution from Lyman α. We report here a specific case, from flare SOL2024-03-10 (M7.4), in which an impulsive SFE deviated from this pattern. This flare contained an 'early impulsive' component of exceptionally hard radiation, extending up to γ-ray energies above 1 MeV, distinctly before the bulk of the flare soft X-ray emission. We can characterize the spectral distribution of this early-impulsive component in detail, thanks to the modern extensive wavelength coverage. A more typical gradual SFE occurred during the flare's main phase. We suggest that events of this type warrant exploration of the solar physics in the 'impulse response' limit of very short time-scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since solar cycle 16, the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) has been found to be shifted southward during the late declining to minimum phase. However, this trend is broken at the end of solar cycle 24. In this paper, we analyse the shift of the HCS by using information obtained from coronal model and in situ data provided by the near-Earth OMNI data base and the Parker Solar Probe (PSP). Coronal potential field source surface modelling results show that the northward shift is established at the beginning of 2018 and remains stable for about 2 yr. Interplanetary magnetic field data obtained from and within 1 au also support the northward shift, as the southern polarity T appears more frequently than the northern polarity A between 2018 and 2020. Both model results and in situ observation obtained by PSP imply that the HCS shift is established in the corona, and then propagates into the heliosphere. On 21 April 2023, a significant M1.7 solar flare erupted from Active Region 13283, accompanied by a filament eruption and a full-halo Coronal Mass Ejection, which reached Earth on 23 April, triggering a severe geomagnetic storm, with Kp reaching 8 (G4) and Dst plummeting to −212 nT together with a sharply distinguished long-lasting negative double-dip behavior of the z -component of the interplanetary magnetic field. This event led to remarkable auroral displays, even at mid-latitudes in Europe. The flare-induced filament eruption caused distinct intensity dimming in the solar corona, observed in specific EUV wavelengths. We observed the dimming region growing at its fastest rate before the flare reached its peak of intensity. Notably, the proximity of the flare to a large southern coronal hole influenced the expansion and propagation of the coronal mass ejection toward Earth, probably impacting the solar wind speed and density. Additionally, we observed a sudden expansion of the coronal hole during the flare, leading us to speculating that the adjacent flare may have further stimulated the flow of solar-wind particles along the open magnetic-field lines. In accordance with the severe Dst-index disturbance, we also report changes in the potential of the pipeline of an Italian energy infrastructure company with respect to the surrounding soil as well as double-dip variation in the H-component of the terrestial magnetic field observed locally (reminiscent to what reported in Dst-index and IMF Bz) temporal profiles, confirming the effects of the geomagnetic storm at Italy mid-latitudes. We report a rare regime of Earth's magnetosphere interaction with sub‐Alfvénic solar wind in which the windsock‐like magnetosphere transforms into one with Alfvén wings. In the magnetic cloud of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) on 24 April 2023, NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission distinguishes the following features: (a) unshocked and accelerated low‐beta CME plasma coming directly against Earth's dayside magnetosphere; (b) dynamical wing filaments representing new channels of magnetic connection between the magnetosphere and foot points of the Sun's erupted flux rope; (c) cold CME ions observed with energized counter‐streaming electrons, evidence of CME plasma captured due to by reconnection between magnetic‐cloud and Alfvén‐wing field lines. The reported measurements advance our knowledge of CME interaction with planetary magnetospheres, and open new opportunities to understand how sub‐Alfvénic plasma flows impact astrophysical bodies such as Mercury, moons of Jupiter, and exoplanets close to their host stars. Plain Language Summary: Like supersonically fast fighter jets creating sonic shocks in the air, planet Earth typically moves in the magnetized solar wind at super‐Alfvénic speeds and generates a bow shock. Here we report unprecedented observations of Earth's magnetosphere interacting with a sub‐Alfvénic solar wind brought by an erupted magnetic flux rope from the Sun, called a coronal mass ejection (CME). The terrestrial bow shock disappears, leaving the magnetosphere exposed directly to the cold CME plasma and the strong magnetic field from the Sun's corona. Our results show that the magnetosphere transforms from its typical windsock‐like configuration to having wings that magnetically connect our planet to the Sun. The wings are highways for Earth's plasma to be lost to the Sun, and for the plasma from the foot points of the Sun's erupted flux rope to access Earth's ionosphere. Our work indicates highly dynamic generation and interaction of the wing filaments, shedding new light on how sub‐Alfvénic plasma wind may impact astrophysical bodies in our solar and other stellar systems. Observations from NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory Atmospheric Imaging Assembly were employed to investigate targeted physical properties of coronal active region structures across the majority of solar cycle 24 (From 2010 May to end of 2020 December). This is the largest consistent study to date which analyses emergent trends in structural width, location, and occurrence rate by performing an automatic and long-term examination of observable coronal and chromospheric limb features within equatorial active region belts across four extreme ultraviolet wavelengths (171, 193, 211, and 304 Å). This has resulted in over 30 000 observed coronal structures and hence allows for the production of spatial and temporal distributions focused upon the rise, peak, and decay activity phases of solar cycle 24. Employing a self-organized-criticality approach as a descriptor of coronal structure formation, power-law slopes of structural widths versus frequency are determined, ranging from -1.6 to -3.3 with variations of up to 0.7 found between differing periods of the solar cycle, compared to a predicted Fractal Diffusive Self-Organized Criticality (FD-SOC) value of -1.5. The North–South hemispheric asymmetry of these structures was also examined with the Northern hemisphere exhibiting activity that is peaking earlier and decaying slower than the Southern hemisphere, with a characteristic 'butterfly' pattern of coronal structures detected. This represents the first survey of coronal structures performed across an entire solar cycle, demonstrating new techniques available to examine the composition of the corona by latitude in varying wavelengths. Multiple pieces of evidence have revealed the important role of turbulence in physical processes in solar eruptions, from particle acceleration to the suppression of conductive cooling. Radio observations of density variation have established a Kolmogorov-like spectrum for solar wind density disturbance. Close to the Sun, measurements from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) bands have been used to examine turbulence in the solar atmosphere. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO/AIA) has been frequently used for diagnosing plasma properties due to its complex coverage of temperature response. We compute structure functions (SFs) using SDO/AIA emission measurements for two example of plasma sheets. With the relationship of v ~ b ~ δη and δΙ ~ δ(η0 + δη)2 ~ δη (v, b, δη, and δΙ are turbulent velocity, magnetic field, number density, and intensity, respectively, and η0 is the background density), SFs of δΙ can be regarded as a proxy for those of the turbulent vand b fields in the plasma sheet. We show that by properly accounting for the radial dependence of the emission line intensity, an SF method is capable of probing the presence of turbulence from SDO/AIA emission lines. Compared to ίη situ observations, performing SFs on EUV emissions is advantageous in studying turbulence behavior in the wave-vector space, and it opens a new window for investigating turbulence from massive SDO/AIA observations. Aims. Kink oscillations are frequently observed in coronal loops. This work aims to numerically clarify the influence of the loop curvature on horizontally and vertically polarized kink oscillations. Methods. Working within the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), we conduct three-dimensional (3D) simulations of axial fundamental kink oscillations in curved density-enhanced loops embedded in a potential magnetic field. Both horizontal and vertical polarizations are examined, and their oscillation frequencies are compared with Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) expectations. We discriminate between two different density specifications. In the first (dubbed "uniform density"), the density is axially uniform and varies continuously in the transverse direction toward a uniform ambient corona. Some further stratification is implemented in the second specification (dubbed "stratified"), allowing us to address the effect of evanescent barriers. Results. Examining the oscillating profiles of the initially perturbed uniform-density loops, we found that the frequencies for both polarizations deviate from the WKB expectation by ∼10%. In the stratified loop, however, the frequency of the horizontal polarization deviates to a larger extent (∼25%). We illustrate the lateral leakage of kink modes through wave tunneling in 3D simulations, for the first time. Despite this, in the uniform density and the stratified loops, the damping time-to-period ratios are similar and are close to the analytical predictions for straight configurations under the thin-tube-thin-boundary (TTTB) assumption. Conclusions. The WKB expectation for straight configurations can reasonably describe the eigenfrequency of kink oscillations only in loops without an asymmetrical cross-loop density profile perpendicular to the oscillating direction. Lateral leakage via wave tunneling is found to be less efficient than resonant absorption, meaning that the latter remains a robust damping mechanism for kink motions even when loop curvature is included. A current sheet is a common structure involved in solar eruptions. However, it is observed in a minority of the events, and the physical properties of its fine structures during a solar eruption are rarely investigated. Here, we report an on-disk observation that displays 108 compact, circular, or elliptic bright structures, presumably plasma blobs, propagating bidirectionally along a flare current sheet during a period of ∼24 min. Using extreme ultraviolet images, we investigated the temporal variation of the blob number around the flare's peak time. The current sheet connects the flare loops and the erupting filament. The width, duration, projected velocity, temperature, and density of these blobs are ∼1.7 ± 0.5 Mm, ∼79 ± 57 s, ∼191 ± 81 km s−1, ∼106.4 ± 0.1 K, and ∼1010.1 ± 0.3 cm−3, respectively. The reconnection site rises with a velocity of ≤69 km s−1. The observational results suggest that plasmoid instability plays an important role in the energy-release process of solar eruptions. The investigation of plasma motions in the solar chromosphere is crucial for understanding the transport of mechanical energy from the interior of the Sun to the outer atmosphere and into interplanetary space. We report the finding of large-amplitude oscillatory transverse motions prevailing in the non-spicular Hα chromosphere of a small quiet region near the solar disk center. The observation was carried out on 2018 August 25 with the Microlensed Hyperspectral Imager (MiHI) installed as an extension to the spectrograph at the Swedish Solar Telescope (SST). MiHI produced high-resolution Stokes spectra of the Hα line over a two-dimensional array of points (sampled every 0.066″ on the image plane) every 1.33 s for about 17 min. We extracted the Doppler-shift-insensitive intensity data of the line core by applying a bisector fit to Stoke I line profiles. From our time–distance analysis of the intensity data, we find a variety of transverse motions with velocity amplitudes of up to 40 km s−1 in fan fibrils and tiny filaments. In particular, in the fan fibrils, large-amplitude transverse MHD waves were seen to occur with a mean velocity amplitude of 25 km s−1 and a mean period of 5.8 min, propagating at a speed of 40 km s−1. These waves are nonlinear and display group behavior. We estimate the wave energy flux in the upper chromosphere at 3 × 106 erg cm−2 s−1. Context. Solar jets are collimated plasma flows moving along magnetic field lines and are accelerated at low altitude following magnetic reconnection. Several of them originate from anemone-shaped low-lying arcades, and the most impulsive ones tend to be relatively wider and display untwisting motions. Aims. We aim to establish typical behaviours and observational signatures in the low atmosphere that can occur in response to the coronal development of such impulsive jets. Methods. We analysed an observed solar jet associated with a circular flare ribbon using high-resolution observations from SST coordinated with IRIS and SDO. We related specifically identified features with those developing in a generic 3D line-tied numerical simulation of reconnection-driven jets performed with the ARMS code. Results. We identified three features in the SST observations: the formation of a hook along the circular ribbon, the gradual widening of the jet through the apparent displacement of its kinked edge towards (and not away) from the presumed reconnection site, and the falling back of some of the jet plasma towards a footpoint offset from that of the jet itself. The 3D numerical simulation naturally accounts for these features, which were not imposed a priori. Our analyses allowed us to interpret them in the context of the 3D geometry of the asymmetric swirled-anemone loops and their sequences of reconnection with ambient coronal loops. Conclusions. Given the relatively simple conditions in which the observed jet occurred, together with the generic nature of the simulation that comprised minimum assumptions, we predict that the specific features that we identified and interpreted are probably typical of every impulsive jet. Context. In 2020, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observed a rapidly rotating M7 dwarf, TIC 277539431, producing a flare at 81° latitude, the highest latitude flare located to date. This is in stark contrast to solar flares that occur much closer to the equator, typically below 30°. The mechanisms that allow flares at high latitudes to occur are poorly understood. Aims. We studied five sectors of TESS monitoring, and obtained 36 ks of XMM-Newton observations to investigate the coronal and flaring activity of TIC 277539431. Methods. From the observations, we infer the optical flare frequency distribution; flare loop sizes and magnetic field strengths; the soft X-ray flux, luminosity, and coronal temperatures; as well as the energy, loop size, and field strength of a large flare in the XMM-Newton observations. Results. We find that the corona of TIC 277539431 does not differ significantly from other low-mass stars on the canonical saturated activity branch with respect to coronal temperatures and flaring activity, but shows lower luminosity in soft X-ray emission by about an order of magnitude, consistent with other late M dwarfs. Conclusions. The lack of X-ray flux, the high-latitude flare, the star's viewing geometry, and the otherwise typical stellar corona taken together can be explained by the migration of flux emergence to the poles in rapid rotators like TIC 277539431 that drain the star's equatorial regions of magnetic flux, but preserve its ability to produce powerful flares. Context. Understanding the role of magnetic reconnection in the heating and dynamics of the solar atmosphere requires detailed observational data of any observable aspect of the reconnection process, including small-scale features such as plasmoids. Aims. Here, we examine the capability of active and upcoming instruments to detect plasmoids generated by reconnection in the corona including low-density regimes. Methods. We used the Bifrost code to perform simulations of plasmoid-mediated reconnection in the corona with a 2D idealized setup: a fan-spine topology with uniform density including thermal conduction. Through a forward-modeling of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) observables, we checked whether our simulated plasmoids could be detected with the instruments of Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Solar Orbiter (SO), as well as the upcoming Multi-Slit Solar Explorer (MUSE) and Solar-C missions. Results. Short-lived (∼10 − 20 s) small-scale (∼0.2 − 0.5 Mm) coronal plasmoids are not resolvable with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board SDO. In contrast, they could be captured with the EUV High-Resolution Imager at the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI-HRIEUV) of SO. The spatial and temporal high-resolution planned for the MUSE spectrograph (SG) is adequate to obtain full spectral information of these plasmoids. To achieve a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for ∼0.8 MK plasmoids in the MUSE/SG 171 Å channel, full-raster images are attainable for regions with electron densities above 109 cm−3, while sit-and-stare observations are recommended for lower-density regions. The future Solar-C mission could also capture these coronal plasmoids using the EUV High-Throughput Spectroscopic Telescope (EUVST), considering rapid changes in Doppler shift and line widths in different EUV lines caused by plasmoid motions along the current sheet. With the combined spectra of MUSE/SG and Solar-C/EUVST in multiple emission lines, along with high-resolution images from SO/EUI-HRIEUV and MUSE/CI, it should be possible to gain new insights about plasmoid formation in the corona. Context. Torsional Alfvén waves do not produce any intensity variation and are therefore challenging to observe with imaging instruments. Previously, Alfvén wave observations were reported throughout all the layers of the solar atmosphere using spectral imaging. Aims. We present a torsional Alfvén wave detected in an inverted Y-shaped structure observed with the HRIEUV telescope of the EUI instrument on board Solar Orbiter in its 174 Å channel. The feature consists of two footpoints connected through short loops and a spine with a length of 30 mm originating from one of the footpoints. Methods. We made use of the simultaneous observations from two other instruments on board Solar Orbiter. The first one is the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager, which is used to derive the magnetic configuration of the observed feature. The second is the Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) instrument, which provided observations of intensity maps in different lines, including Ne VIII and C III lines. We also address the issues of the SPICE point spread function and its influence on the Doppler maps via performed forward-modeling analysis. Results. The difference movie constructed from the HRIEUV images shows clear signatures of propagating rotational motions in the spine. We measured propagation speeds of 136 km s−1–160 km s−1, which are consistent with the expected Alfvén speeds. Evidence of rotational motions in the transverse direction with velocities of 26 km s−1–60 km s−1 serves as an additional indication of torsional waves being present. Doppler maps obtained with SPICE show a strong signal in the spine region. Under the assumption that the recovered point spread function is mostly correct, synthesized raster images confirm that this signal is predominantly physical. Conclusions. We conclude that the presented observations are compatible with an interpretation of either propagating torsional Alfvén waves in a low coronal structure or the untwisting of a flux rope. The geometry of a coronal hole (CH) affects the density profile of the reflected part of an incoming global coronal wave (CW). In this study, we perform for the first time magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of fast-mode MHD waves that interact with CHs of different geometries, such as circular, elliptic, convex, and concave shapes. We analysed the effect of these geometries on the density profiles of the reflected waves, and we generated the corresponding simulation-based time-distance plots. Within these time-distance plots, we determined regions that exhibit specific density features, such as large reflected density amplitudes. In a further step, these interaction features can be compared to actual observed CW–CH interaction events, which will enable us to explain interaction parameters of the observed interaction events, such as the density structure of the reflected wave. These parameters are usually difficult to understand comprehensively based on an analysis of the measurements alone. Moreover, we show that the interaction between a concave CH and CWs, whose density profile includes an enhanced as well as a depleted wave part, can lead to reflected density amplitudes that are more than twice larger than the incoming density amplitudes. Another effect of the interplay between the constructive and destructive interference of the reflected wave parts is a strongly depleted region in the middle of the CW–CH interaction process. In addition, we show that the choice of the path that is used to generate the time-distance plots is important and that this choice affects the interpretation of the CW–CH interaction results. The transition of an impulsively excited kink oscillation of a solar coronal loop to an oscillation with a stationary amplitude, i.e. the damping pattern, is determined using the low-dimensional self-oscillation model. In the model, the decayless kink oscillations are sustained by the interaction of the oscillating loop with an external quasi-steady flow. The analytical solution is based on the assumption that the combined effect of the effective dissipation, for example, by resonant absorption, and interaction with an external flow, is weak. The effect is characterized by a dimensionless coupling parameter. The damping pattern is found to depend upon the initial amplitude and the coupling parameter. The approximate expression shows a good agreement with a numerical solution of the self-oscillation equation. The plausibility of the established damping pattern is demonstrated by an observational example. Notably, the damping pattern is not exponential, and the characteristic decay time is different from the time determined by the traditionally used exponential damping fit. Implications of this finding for seismology of the solar coronal plasmas are discussed. In particular, it is suggested that a very rapid, in less than the oscillation period, decay of the oscillation to the stationary level, achieved for larger values of the coupling parameter, can explain the relative rareness of the kink oscillation events. We seek to understand the composition and variability of fast solar wind (FSW) and slow Alfvénic solar wind emerging from coronal holes (CHs). We leverage an opportune conjunction between Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe (PSP) during PSP Encounter 11 to include compositional diagnostics from the Solar Orbiter Heavy Ion Sensor as these variations provide crucial insights into the origin and nature of the solar wind. We use potential field source surface and magnetohydrodynamic models to connect the observed plasma at PSP and Solar Orbiter to its origin footpoint in the photosphere and compare these results with the in situ measurements. A very clear signature of a heliospheric current sheet crossing as evidenced by enhancements in low first ionization potential (FIP) elements, ion charge state ratios, proton density, low Alfvénicity, and polarity estimates validates the combination of modeling, data, and mapping. We identify two FSW streams emerging from small equatorial CHs with low ion charge state ratios, low FIP bias, high Alfvénicity, and low footpoint brightness, yet anomalously low alpha particle abundance for both streams. We identify high-Alfvénicity slow solar wind emerging from the overexpanded boundary of a CH having intermediate alpha abundance, high Alfvénicity, and dips in ion charge state ratios corresponding to CH boundaries. The use of magnetometers arranged in a gradiometer configuration offers a practical and widely used solution, particularly in archaeological applications where the sources of interest are generally shallow. Since magnetic anomalies due to archaeological remains often have low amplitudes, highly sensitive magnetic sensors are kept very close to the ground to reveal buried structures. However, the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is increasingly becoming a reliable and valuable tool for the acquisition of magnetic data, providing uniform coverage of large areas and access to even very steep terrain, saving time and reducing risks. However, the application of a vertical gradiometer for drone-borne measurements is still challenging due to the instability of the system drone magnetometer in flight and noise issues due to the magnetic interference of the mobile platform or related to the oscillation of the suspended sensors. We present the implementation of a magnetic vertical gradiometer UAV system and its use in an archaeological area of Southern Italy. To reduce the magnetic and electromagnetic noise caused by the aircraft, the magnetometer was suspended 3m below the drone using ropes. A Continuous Wavelet Transform analysis of data collected in controlled tests confirmed that several characteristic power spectrum peaks occur at frequencies compatible with the magnetometer oscillations. This noise was then eliminated with a properly designed low-pass filter. The resulting drone-borne vertical gradient data compare very well with ground-based magnetic measurements collected in the same area and taken as a control dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-resolution observations with GRAVITY-Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) instrument have provided abundant information about the flares in Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in our Galactic centre, including the time-dependent location of the centroid (a 'hotspot'), the light curve, and polarization. Yuan et al. (2009) proposed a 'coronal mass ejection' model to explain the flares and their association with the plasma ejection. The key idea is that magnetic reconnection in the accretion flow produces the flares and results in the formation and ejection of flux ropes. The dynamical process proposed in the model has been confirmed by three-dimensional general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations in a later work. Based on this scenario, in our previous works the radiation of the flux rope has been calculated analytically and compared to the observations. In the present paper, we develop the model by directly using numerical simulation data to interpret observations. We first identify flux ropes formed due to reconnection from the data. By assuming that electrons are accelerated in the reconnection current sheet and flow into the flux rope and emit their radiation there, we have calculated the time-dependent energy distribution of electrons after phenomenologically considering their injection due to reconnection acceleration, radiative and adiabatic cooling. The radiation of these electrons is calculated using the ray-tracing approach. The trajectory of the hotspot, the radiation light curve during the flare, and the polarization are calculated. ADITYA-L1 is India's first dedicated mission to observe the Sun and its atmosphere from a halo orbit around L1 point. Visible emission line coronagraph (VELC) is the primary payload on board Aditya-L1 to observe the Sun's corona. VELC is designed as an internally occulted reflective coronagraph to meet the observational requirements of wide wavelength band and the field of view close to the solar limb (1.05 R Sun ). Images of the solar corona in continuum and spectra in three emission lines 5303 Å [Fe xiv], 7892 Å [Fe xi] and 10747 Å [Fe xiii] obtained with high cadence are to be analyzed using software algorithms automatically. A reasonable part of these observations will be made in a synoptic mode in which the data are processed through a standard pipeline and the resulting products will be made available for public use. The procedure involves the calibration of instrument and detectors, converting the images into the FITS format, correcting the images and spectra for the instrumental effects, and aligning the images (in terms of position angles and image scales) etc. Then, develop image processing algorithms to detect the occurrence of energetic events using continuum images. Also derive physical parameters, such as temperature and velocity structure of solar corona using emission line observations. Parker Solar Probe, the closest spacecraft to the Sun, has renewed our understanding of the solar corona and the interplanetary space. One of its important findings is the prevalence of switchbacks, which display localized magnetic reversals along the otherwise Parker spirals. While some switchbacks might disappear quickly, others can maintain for a long period of time, and there are indications that many switchbacks strengthen from the solar corona to the interplanetary space despite their magnetic tension force, which tends to straighten the magnetic field lines. Therefore, how these switchbacks could be maintained for a long period of time remains a mystery. In this paper, we employed a 3D data-driven global full magnetohydrodynamics numerical model to explore the evolution of switchbacks formed in the dynamic corona. Our simulations indicate that two factors can affect the lifetime of a switchback. One factor is the combination of angle and leg length ensures that the switchback with greater curvature after reconnection can last longer, and the greater the angle, the more magnetic field lines that can be reconnected, and thus the longer the duration. We call this influencing factor flux tube shape factor. The other factor is the velocity shear, i.e., when the solar wind at the convex-outward turning of a switchback is faster than that at the concave-outward turning, the switchback becomes enhanced during propagation, and it weakens when the velocity difference is opposite. The paper examines differences in the phase speed dispersion of transverse harmonics of slow magnetoacoustic (MA) waves propagating inside coronal loops along magnetic field lines. Using the magnetic slab approximation for conditions corresponding to the solar corona plasma, the dependencies of the phase speeds of the first four transverse harmonics of slow MA waves on their periods are calculated. It is shown that the greatest differences are between the fundamental transverse harmonic and the higher harmonics in the region of short periods. With an increase in the ratio of gas-dynamic pressure to magnetic pressure (plasma beta), the effect manifests itself for higher values of periods. Magnetoacoustic waves are actively used as a means of diagnosing plasma parameters and processes occurring in it. In this paper, we study the problem of the evolution of a weak perturbation specified at the base of a coronal loop. The analysis is carried out under the assumption that the plasma is in a strong magnetic field, such that the evolution of slow magnetoacoustic and entropy modes can be described within the framework of gas dynamics equations with a high degree of accuracy. The spectrum of the waves in question is assumed to be such that the main source of dispersion and dissipation of the waves is the thermal conduction of the medium. Within the framework of the specified approximations, an exact solution to the boundary value problem for the linear evolution equation is found using the Fourier method and Duhamel's principle. The obtained exact analytical solution can be used to interpret the observation results, as well as numerical modeling of slow magnetoacoustic and entropy waves in the solar corona. The magnetic field strength and its topology play an important role in understanding the formation, evolution, and dynamics of the solar corona. Also, it plays a significant role in addressing long-standing mysteries such as coronal heating problem, origin and propagation of coronal mass ejections, drivers of space weather, origin and acceleration of solar wind, and so on. Despite having photospheric magnetograms for decades, we do not have reliable observations of coronal magnetic field strengths today. To measure the coronal magnetic field precisely, the spectropolarimetry channel of the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) on board the Aditya-L1 mission is designed. Using the observations of coronal emission line Fe XIII [10747Å ], it is possible to generate full Stokes maps (I, Q, U, and V) that help in estimating the Line-of-Sight (LOS) magnetic field strength and to derive the magnetic field topology maps of solar corona in the Field of View (FOV) (1.05 – 1.5 R ⊙ ). In this article, we summarize the instrumental details of the spectropolarimetry channel and detailed calibration procedures adopted to derive the modulation and demodulation matrices. The geo-effectiveness of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is determined primarily by their magnetic fields. Modeling of gyrosynchrotron (GS) emission is a promising remote sensing technique to measure the CME magnetic field at coronal heights. However, faint GS emission from CME flux ropes is hard to detect in the presence of bright solar emission from the solar corona. With high dynamic-range spectropolarimetric meter wavelength solar images provided by the Murchison Widefield Array, we have detected faint GS emission from a CME out to ∼8.3 R ⊙, the largest heliocentric distance reported to date. High-fidelity polarimetric calibration also allowed us to robustly detect circularly polarized emission from GS emission. For the first time in the literature, Stokes V detection has jointly been used with Stokes I spectra to constrain GS models. One expects that the inclusion of polarimetric measurement will provide tighter constraints on the GS model parameters. Instead, we found that homogeneous GS models, which have been used in all prior works, are unable to model both the total intensity and circular polarized emission simultaneously. This strongly suggests the need for using inhomogeneous GS models to robustly estimate the CME magnetic field and plasma parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stellar mass black holes in X-ray binaries (XRBs) are known to display different states characterized by different spectral and timing properties, understood in the framework of a hot corona coexisting with a thin accretion disc whose inner edge is truncated. There are several open questions related to the nature and properties of the corona, the thin disc, and dynamics behind the hard state. This motivated us to perform 2D hydrodynamical simulations of accretion flows onto a |$10 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| black hole. We consider a two-temperature plasma, incorporate radiative cooling with bremmstrahlung, synchrotron, and Comptonization losses and approximate the Schwarzschild space–time via a pseudo-Newtonian potential. We varied the mass accretion rate in the range |$0.02 \le \dot{M}/\dot{M}_{\rm Edd} \le 0.35$|⁠. Our simulations show the natural emergence of a colder truncated thin disc embedded in a hot corona, as required to explain the hard state of XRBs. We found that as |$\dot{M}$| increases, the corona contracts and the inner edge of the thin disc gets closer to the event horizon. At a critical accretion rate |$0.02 \le \dot{M}_{\text{crit }}/\dot{M}_{\rm Edd} \le 0.06$|⁠ , the thin disc disappears entirely. We present the formation of quasi-periodic cool spicule-like jets in the solar atmosphere using 2.5-D numerical simulation in two-fluid regime (ions+neutrals) under the presence of thermal conduction and ion-neutral collision. The nonlinear, impulsive Alfvénic perturbations at the top of the photosphere trigger field aligned magnetoacoustic perturbations due to ponderomotive force. The transport of energy from Alfvén pulse to such vertical velocity perturbations due to ponderomotive force is considered as an initial trigger mechanism. Thereafter, these velocity perturbations steepen into the shocks followed by quasi-periodic rise and fall of the cool jets transporting mass in the overlying corona. In this paper, we study the role of radiative cooling (RC) in a two-fluid model consisting of coupled neutrals and charged particles. We first analyse the linearized two-fluid equations where we include radiative losses in the energy equation for the charged particles. In a one-dimensional geometry for parallel propagation and in the limiting cases of weak and strong coupling, it can be shown analytically that the instability conditions for the thermal mode and the sound waves, the isobaric and isentropic criteria, respectively, remain unchanged with respect to one-fluid radiative plasmas. For the parameters considered in this paper, representative for the solar corona, the RC produces growth of the thermal mode and damping of the sound waves. In the weak coupling limit, the growth of the thermal instability and the damping of the sound waves is as derived in Field (Field 1965 Astrophys. J.142, 531 (doi:10.1086/148317)) using the charged fluid properties. When neutrals are included and are sufficiently coupled to the charges, the thermal mode growth rate and the wave damping both reduce by the same factor, which depends on the ionization fraction only. For a heating function that is constant in time, we find that the growth of the thermal mode and the damping of the sound waves are slightly larger. The numerical calculation of the eigenvalues of the general system of equations in a three-dimensional geometry confirm the analytic results. We then run two-dimensional fully nonlinear simulations that give consistent results: a higher ionization fraction or lower coupling will increase the growth rate. The magnetic field contribution is negligible in the linear phase. Ionization-recombination effects might play an important role because the RC produces a large range of temperatures in the system. In the numerical simulation, after the first condensation phase, when the minimum temperature is reached, the fraction of neutrals increases four orders of magnitude because of the recombination. Coronal loops are bright, filamentary structures formed by thermal plasmas constrained by the sun's magnetic field. Studying coronal loops provides insights into magnetic fields and their role in coronal heating processes. We propose a new automatic coronal loop detection method to optimize the problem of existing algorithms in detecting low-intensity coronal loops. Our method employs a line-Gaussian filter to enhance the contrast between coronal loops and background pixels, facilitating the detection of low-intensity ones. Following the detection of coronal loops, each loop is extracted using a method based on approximate local direction. Compared with the classical automatic detection method, Oriented Coronal Curved Loop Tracing (OCCULT), and its improved version, OCCULT-2, the proposed method demonstrates superior accuracy and completeness in loop detection. Furthermore, testing with images from the Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) at 173 Å, the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) at 193 Å, and the High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) at 193 Å and 172 Å confirms the robust generalization capabilities of our method. Statistical analysis of the cross-section width of coronal loops shows that most of the loop widths are resolved in Hi-C images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solar surges are collimated flows of plasma that occur in the periphery of active regions (ARs). The kinematics, physical properties, and triggering mechanisms of a solar surge were studied through imaging and spectroscopic diagnosis. The surge has a typical inverted Y-shape, and it moves with a speed of more than 200 km/s in the transition-region (TR) which is much higher than the sound speed of TR. The observational findings suggest that the surge was triggered due to magnetic reconnection. In addition, a hot jet formed after around 03 minutes and propagated at a speed that is comparable to the sound speed of the corona. Hence, most probably, the hot jet forms due to the chromospheric evaporation. The spectroscopic diagnosis reveals that electron densities are log10 10.82±0.90 and log10 9.93±1.27 in the base and spire of the surge, respectively. Further, it is found that the Si iv line ratio is around 1.85 in the base and 1.80 in the spire of the surge. Hence, we say that most of the Si iv profiles are forming under optically thick conditions in the surge. Most importantly, some Si iv spectral profiles from the base and spire of the surge are double peak profiles with a dip close to the central wavelength. Also, in the same region, optically thick conditions exist, therefore, most probably, the central dip in the profiles is a result of the self-absorption. The Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMUS), aboard the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), has been conducting observations of ultraviolet emissions within the Martian exosphere. Taking advantage of the distinctive orbit of the EMM around Mars, EMUS utilizes a dedicated strafe observation strategy to scan the illuminated Martian exosphere at tangential altitudes ranging from 130 to over 20,000 km. To distinguish between emissions of Martian origin and those from the interplanetary background, EMUS conducts specialized background observations by looking away from the planet. This approach has allowed us to investigate the radial and seasonal variations in Martian coronal emission features at H Lyman‐α, β and γ wavelengths. Our analysis supports the previous studies indicating that Martian exospheric hydrogen Lyman emission brightness attains its highest levels around the southern summer solstice and reaches its lowest levels when Mars is near aphelion. Additionally, a secondary peak emission at all altitudes is observed after perihelion during Martian Year (MY) 36, which can be attributed to a Class C dust storm. Our study establishes a strong correlation between solar flux and coronal brightness for these emissions, highlighting the impact of solar activity on the visibility of Martian corona. In addition, we have examined interannual variability and found that emission intensities in MY 37 surpassed those in MY 36, primarily due to increased solar activity. These observations help to understand potential seasonal patterns of exospheric hydrogen, which is driven by underlying mechanisms in the lower atmosphere and solar activity, eventually suggesting an impact on water loss in the Martian atmosphere. The Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMUS), on the Emirates Mars Mission spacecraft, is currently studying the Martian atmosphere using the ultraviolet light emissions of different atoms and molecules on Mars. In this study, we have analyzed EMUS observations and determined that atomic hydrogen emission intensities increase during the Martian southern summer and decrease as Mars moves farther away from the Sun. Furthermore, we have compared the hydrogen brightness between two consecutive Martian years and have found that the hydrogen brightness is higher in the most recent year primarily due to increased solar radiation. These observations help us understand possible patterns that occur during different seasons on Mars and the mechanisms underlying water loss in the Martian atmosphere. Interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) is a massive, coherent magnetic structure emitting from the Sun in interplanetary space and plays an essential role in space weather processes. Here, we focus on determining the turbulent characteristics of magnetic field fluctuations in 358 ICMEs magnetic flux ropes (MFR) at 1 au using Wind spacecraft data. We observed that during injection, inertial, and dissipation scales, the average spectral index of the analysed MFRs is −1.70 ± 0.26, −1.64 ± 0.06, and −2.31 ± 0.40, respectively. It implies that overall the turbulence inside the ICME MFR has a Kolmogorow (f −5/3) type spectrum. We observe the nature of the spectral index to be unaffected by the MFR boundary and the presence of a background magnetic field. Thus, coherent MFRs show some turbulent characteristics. The low compressibility value during injection and the inertial scale indicate that Alfvénic fluctuations may dominate at these scales. We observe spectral break at the dissipation scale, but low normalized magnetic helicity denied the role of wave activity. Therefore, thorough research of the causes of a spectral break during the ICME MFR is necessary. Using non-linear force free field (NLFFF) extrapolation, 3D magnetic fields were modeled from the 12-min cadence Solar Dynamics Observatory Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) photospheric vector magnetograms, spanning a time period of 1 hour before through 1 hour after the start of 18 X-class and 12 M-class solar flares. Several magnetic field parameters were calculated from the modeled fields directly, as well as from the power spectrum of surface maps generated by summing the fields along the vertical axis, for two different regions: areas with photospheric |6z| > 300 G (active region -- AR) and areas above the photosphere with the magnitude of the non-potential field (BNP) greater than three standard deviations above |BNP| of the AR field and either the unsigned twist number |Tw| > 1 turn or the shear angle ¥ > 80° (non-potential region -- NPR). Superposed epoch (SPE) plots of the magnetic field parameters were analyzed to investigate the evolution of the 3D solar field during the solar flare events and discern consistent trends across all solar flare events in the dataset, as well as across subsets of flare events categorized by their magnetic and sunspot classifications. The relationship between different flare properties and the magnetic field parameters was quantitatively described by the Spearman ranking correlation coefficient, rs. The parameters that showed the most consistent and discernable trends among the flare events, particularly for the hour leading up to the eruption, were the total unsigned flux 0), free magnetic energy (EFree), total unsigned magnetic twist (rTot), and total unsigned free magnetic twist (pTot). Strong (|rs| e [0.6, 0.8)) to very strong (|rs| e [0.8, 1.0]) correlations were found between the magnetic field parameters and the following flare properties: peak X-ray flux, duration, rise time, decay time, impulsiveness, and integrated flux; the strongest correlation coefficient calculated for each flare property was 0.62, 0.85, 0.73, 0.82, -0.81, and 0.82, respectively. Nanoflares are thought to be one of the prime candidates that can heat the solar corona to its multimillion kelvin temperature. Individual nanoflares are difficult to detect with the present generation of instruments, but their presence can be inferred by comparing simulated nanoflare-heated plasma emissions with the observed emission. Using HYDRAD coronal loop simulations, we model the emission from an X-ray bright point (XBP) observed by the Marshall Grazing Incidence X-ray Spectrometer (MaGIXS), along with the nearest available observations from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) on board the Hinode observatory. The length and magnetic field strength of the coronal loops are derived from the linear force-free extrapolation of the observed photospheric magnetogram by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board SDO. Each loop is assumed to be heated by random nanoflares, whose magnitude and frequency are determined by the loop length and magnetic field strength. The simulation results are then compared and matched against the measured intensity from AIA, XRT, and MaGIXS. Our model results indicate the observed emission from the XBP under study could be well matched by a distribution of nanoflares with average delay times 1500–3000 s. Further, we demonstrate the high sensitivity of MaGIXS and XRT for diagnosing the heating frequency using this method, while AIA passbands are found to be the least sensitive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a multiwavelength study of AB Doradus, combining modelling that incorporates a spectropolarimetric magnetic field map with 8.4 GHz radio interferometry to measure the coronal extent and density of this young star. We use the surface magnetic field map to produce a 3D extrapolation of AB Dor's coronal magnetic field. From this model we create synthetic radio images throughout the stellar rotation period which we can compare with the interferometric radio observations. Our models reproduce the two-lobe structure seen in the radio observations. We successfully fit the observed flux magnitude and lobe separation with our model. We conclude that that the features seen in the radio images are a result of centrifugal containment of hot gas at the peak of closed magnetic loops, and that the corona of AB Dor extends to about 8–10 stellar radii, making it much more extended than the present-day solar corona. The soft excess in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may arise through a combination of relativistic reflection and the effects of a warm corona at the surface of the accretion disc. Detailed examination of the soft excess can therefore constrain models of the transport and dissipation of accretion energy. Here, we analyse 34 XMM–Newton observations from 14 type 1 AGNs with the reXcor spectral model that self-consistently combines emission from a warm corona with relativistic reflection assuming a lamppost corona. The model divides accretion energy between the disc, the warm corona, and the lamppost. The XMM–Newton observations span a factor of 188 in Eddington ratio (λobs) and 350 in black hole mass, and we find that a warm corona is a significant contributor to the soft excess for 13 of the 14 AGNs with a mean warm corona heating fraction of 0.51. The reXcor fits reveal that the fraction of accretion energy dissipated in the lamppost is anticorrelated with λobs. In contrast, the relationship between λobs and both the optical depth and the heating fraction of the warm corona appears to transition from an anticorrelation to a correlation at λobs,t ≈ 0.15. Therefore, at least one other physical process in addition to the accretion rate is needed to explain the evolution of the warm corona. Overall, we find that a warm corona appears to be a crucial depository of accretion energy in AGNs across a broad range of λobs and black hole mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observed spectral profiles of emission lines from the corona are found to have widths exceeding the thermal line width. To investigate the physical mechanism, we run a 3D magnetohydrodynamics model of a single, straightened loop in which we partially resolve turbulent motions that form in response to the driving by self-consistently evolving magneto-convection in the photosphere. The convective motions shear and twist the magnetic field lines, leading to heating. From the model, we synthesize spectral profiles of emission lines forming at temperatures around and above 1 MK. The coronal heating process generates a range of velocity amplitudes and directions structured on a scale much smaller than the resolving power of current instruments, leading to a broadening of the spectral lines. Our model includes the mass exchange between corona and chromosphere, thus we also capture flows parallel to the loop axis. We find that the spectral lines show a non-thermal line broadening roughly consistent with observations for a viewing angle perpendicular to the axis. The broadening through field-parallel flows is comparable, although slightly smaller. The line broadening is independent of the instrument resolution for a perpendicular line of sight (LOS). We can connect the non-thermal line broadening to heating events and flows. While small-scale velocities along the LOS are mainly responsible for the broadening observed perpendicular to the loop, chromospheric evaporation is important for the line broadening observed along the loop. The model reproduces observed values for non-thermal line widths. The activity of the solar corona has a significant impact on all aspects of human life. People typically use images obtained from astronomical telescopes to observe coronal activities, among which the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is particularly widely used. However, due to resolution limitations, we have begun to study the application of generative adversarial network super-resolution techniques to enhance the image data quality for a clearer observation of the fine structures and dynamic processes in the solar atmosphere, which improves the prediction accuracy of solar activities. We aligned SDO/AIA images with images from the High-Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) to create a dataset. This research proposes a new super-resolution method named SAFCSRGAN, which includes a spatial attention module that incorporates channel information, allowing the network model to better capture the corona's features. A Charbonnier loss function was introduced to enhance the perceptual quality of the super-resolution images. Compared to the original method using ESRGAN, our method achieved an 11.9% increase in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and a 4.8% increase in Structural Similarity (SSIM). Additionally, we introduced two perceptual image quality assessment metrics, the Natural Image Quality Evaluator (NIQE) and Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS), which improved perceptual quality by 10.8% and 1.3%, respectively.
