Late blight (LB) caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary is the greatest threat to potato production worldwide. Current potato breeding for LB resistance heavily depends on the introduction of new genes for resistance to P. infestans (Rpi genes). Such genes have been discovered in highly diverse wild, primitive, and cultivated species of tuber-bearing potatoes (Solanum L. section Petota Dumort.) and introgressed into the elite potato cultivars by hybridization and transgenic complementation. Unfortunately, even the most resistant potato varieties have been overcome by LB due to the arrival of new pathogen strains and their rapid evolution. Therefore, novel sources for germplasm enhancement comprising the broad-spectrum Rpi genes are in high demand with breeders who aim to provide durable LB resistance. The Genbank of the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR) in St. Petersburg harbors one of the world's largest collections of potato and potato relatives. In this study, LB resistance was evaluated in a core selection representing 20 species of seven Petota series according to the Hawkes (1990) classification: Bulbocastana (Rydb.) Hawkes, Demissa Buk., Longipedicellata Buk., Maglia Bitt., Pinnatisecta (Rydb.) Hawkes, Tuberosa (Rydb.) Hawkes (wild and cultivated species), and Yungasensa Corr. LB resistance was assessed in 96 accessions representing 18 species in the laboratory test with detached leaves using a highly virulent and aggressive isolate of P. infestans. The Petota species notably differed in their LB resistance: S. bulbocastanum Dun., S. demissum Lindl., S. cardiophyllum Lindl., and S. berthaultii Hawkes stood out at a high frequency of resistant accessions (7–9 points on a 9-point scale). Well-established specific SCAR markers of ten Rpi genes—Rpi-R1, Rpi-R2/Rpi-blb3, Rpi-R3a, Rpi-R3b, Rpi-R8, Rpi-blb1/Rpi-sto1, Rpi-blb2, and Rpi-vnt1—were used to mine 117 accessions representing 20 species from seven Petota series. In particular, our evidence confirmed the diverse Rpi gene location in two American continents. The structural homologs of the Rpi-R2, Rpi-R3a, Rpi-R3b, and Rpi-R8 genes were found in the North American species other than S. demissum, the species that was the original source of these genes for early potato breeding, and in some cases, in the South American Tuberosa species. The Rpi-blb1/Rpi-sto1 orthologs from S. bulbocastanum and S. stoloniferum Schlechtd et Bché were restricted to genome B in the Mesoamerican series Bulbocastana, Pinnatisecta, and Longipedicellata. The structural homologs of the Rpi-vnt1 gene that were initially identified in the South American species S. venturii Hawkes and Hjert. were reported, for the first time, in the North American series of Petota species. Summary: Interploidal hybridisation can generate changes in plant chromosome numbers, which might exert effects additional to the expected due to genome merger per se (that is genetic, epigenetic and phenotypic novelties).Wild potatoes are suitable to address this question in an evolutionary context. To this end, we performed genetic (AFLP and single sequence repeart (SSR)), epigenetic (MSAP), and cytological comparisons in: (1) natural populations of the diploid cytotype of the hybrid taxonomic species Solanum × rechei (2n = 2×, 3×) and its parental species, the triploid cytotype of Solanum microdontum (2n = 2×, 3×) and Solanum kurtzianum (2n = 2×); and (2) newly synthesised intraploidal (2× × 2×) and interploidal (3× × 2×) S. microdontum × S. kurtzianum hybrids.Aneuploidy was detected in S. × rechei and the synthetic interploidal progeny; this phenomenon might have originated the significantly higher number of methylation changes observed in the interploidal vs the intraploidal hybrids. The wide epigenetic variability induced by interploidal hybridisation is consistent with the novel epigenetic pattern established in S. × rechei compared to its parental species in nature.These results suggest that aneuploid potato lineages can persist throughout the short term, and possibly medium term, and that differences in parental ploidy resulting in aneuploidy are an additional source of epigenetic variation. Wild potato species have substantial phenotypic and physiological diversity. Here, we report a comprehensive assessment of wild and cultivated potato species based on genomic analyses of 201 accessions of Solanum section Petota . We sequenced the genomes of these 201 accessions and identified 6 487 006 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 167 accessions in clade 4 of Solanum section Petota , including 146 wild and 21 cultivated diploid potato accessions with a broad geographic distribution. Genome-wide genetic variation analysis showed that the diversity of wild potatoes is higher than that of cultivated potatoes, and much higher genetic diversity in the agronomically important disease resistance genes was observed in wild potatoes. Furthermore, by exploiting information about known quantitative trait loci (QTL), we identified 609 genes under selection, including those correlated with the loss of bitterness in tubers and those involved in tuberization, two major domesticated traits of potato. Phylogenetic analyses revealed a north-south division of all species in clade 4, not just those in the S. brevicaule complex, and further supported S. candolleanum as the progenitor of cultivated potato and the monophyletic origin of cultivated potato in southern Peru. In addition, we analyzed the genome of S. candolleanum and identified 529 genes lost in cultivated potato. Solanum section Petota has been the subject of intensive taxonomic work since the description of the cultivated potato in 1753. In total, there are 494 epithets for wild taxa and 626 epithets for cultivated taxa. Different taxonomists applied various taxonomic philosophies and species concepts to the section. Hypotheses of the number of species and their interrelationships have differed greatly among authors. A taxonomic treatment of section Petota by Jack Hawkes in 1990 recognized 228 wild species and seven cultivated species, divided into 21 taxonomic series. In 2014 Spooner and collaborators more than halved this number to 107 wild species and four cultivated species, partitioned into four clades; not using series. The purpose of this paper is to provide a retrospective of the methods and philosophies that have resulted in this drastic decrease in the number of species and their infrasectional classification. Wild potato ( Solanum L. sect. Petota Dumort.) species contain diploids (2 n = 2 x = 24) to hexaploids (2 n = 6 x = 72). J.G. Hawkes classified all hexaploid Mexican species in series Demissa Bukasov and, according to a classic five-genome hypothesis of M. Matsubayashi in 1991, all members of series Demissa are allopolyploids. We investigated the genome composition of members of Hawkes's series Demissa with genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), using labeled DNA of their putative progenitors having diploid AA, BB, or PP genome species or with DNA of tetraploid species having AABB or AAAaAa genomes. GISH analyses support S. hougasii Correll as an allopolyploid with one AA component genome and another BB component genome. Our results also indicate that the third genome of S. hougasii is more closely related to P or a P genome-related species. Solanum demissum Lindl., in contrast, has all three chromosome sets related to the basic A genome, similar to the GISH results of polyploid species of series Acaulia Juz. Our results support a more recent taxonomic division of the Mexican hexaploid species into two groups: the allopolyploid Iopetala group containing S. hougasii, and an autopolyploid Acaulia group containing S. demissum with South American species S. acaule Bitter and S. albicans (Ochoa) Ochoa. The Role of Organic Acids in the Domestication of Oxalis tuberosa: A New Model for Studying Domestication Resulting in Opposing Crop Phenotypes. Though few crops display directly opposing domesticated phenotypes, these crops may be the key to understanding domestication processes that address conflicting selective pressures in the agricultural ecosystem. Two relatively well-known examples are cassava ( Manihot esculenta Crantz), which has high-cyanide and low-cyanide varieties, and potato ( Solanum section Petota). Among the potatoes are several species, including the common potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.), that have low levels of glycoalkaloids and there are other species of 'bitter potato' with elevated levels of glycoalkaloids. We propose that Oxalis tuberosa Molina, 'oca,' may represent a third example of such a crop system, with opposing high organic acid and low organic acid cultivars. Each cultivar set has different cultural food preparation practices ('use-categories'), similar to the 'use-categories' that have been described for potatoes in the Andes (Brush et al. Economic Botany 35;70-88, ; Zimmerer Journal of Biogeography 18;165-178, ). Our initial analyses suggest that organic acids in tubers may be an important biochemical difference between use-categories, based on both oxalic acid and pH data. Here, we review our understanding of organic acids in oca tubers, while highlighting areas that merit further investigation. Aunque pocos cultivos presentan fenotipos domésticos directamente opuestos , estos cultivos pueden ser la clave para entender los procesos de domesticación que muestran conflicto en la presión selectiva en el ecosistema agrícola. Dos ejemplos relativamente bien conocidos son la yuca (Manihot esculenta Crantz), que tiene variedades de alto y bajo contenido de cianuro, y la papa (Solanum sección Petota). The article focuses on the revision of the Solanum medians Complex (Solanum section Petota) which are widely distributed along the coastal lomas and up the western slopes of the Andes Mountains from central Peru and northern Chile. Research shows that its fertile diploid and sterile triploid cytotypes are common and believed to be associated with morphological variants. It was found that so much overlap of their taxonomy is impractical to use morphology for reliable identifications.

The article presents the morphometric study of species boundaries of the wild potato Solanum series Piurana (Solanaceae) and putatively related species from seven other series in Solanum section Petota in Peru. The morphological similarity of its constituent species has led to conflicting taxonomic treatments. Solanum series Piurana's limits and validity of constituent species are unresolved. Among its other series are Conicibaccata, Cuneoalata, Ingifolia, Megistacroloba and Simplicissima.

Solanum sect. Petota (tuber-bearing wild and cultivated potatoes) are a group of approximately 190 wild species distributed throughout the Americas from the southwestern United States south to Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. Solanum series Conicibaccata are a group of approximately 40 species within sect. Petota, distributed from central Mexico to central Bolivia, composed of diploids (2n = 2x = 24), tetraploids (2n = 4x = 48) and hexaploids (2n = 6x = 64); the polyploids are thought to be polysomic polyploids. This study initially was designed to address species boundaries of the four Mexican and Central American species of series Conicibaccata with AFLP data with the addition of first germplasm collections of one of these four species, Solanum woodsonii, as a follow-up to prior morphological, chloroplast DNA, and RAPD studies; and additional species of series Conicibaccata from South America. AFLP data from 12 primer combinations (1722 polymorphic bands) are unable to distinguish polyploid species long thought to be distinct. The data suggest a complex reticulate history of the tetraploids or the need for a broad downward reevaluation of the number of species in series Conicibaccata, a trend seen in other series of sect. This article presents a study regarding the wild potato Solanum series Conicibaccata. It discusses that Conicibaccata consists about 40 wild potato species distributed from southern Mexico to central Bolivia, which contains diploids, tetraploids, hexaploids, and some polyploids are likely allopolyploids.

Solanum section Petota, containing the cultivated potato and its wild relatives, is a group of around 200 species. Many of these species are morphologically very variable with unclear boundaries, and the group as a whole appears to be somewhat over-classified. Describing a new species in this group should only be undertaken with caution, and molecular data can be used to test the distinctness of any putative new taxon. AFLP markers have shown the ability to reliably distinguish species in several groups within the genus Solanum. We tested the distinctness of a new tuber-bearing Solanum species using morphological and AFLP data, and tried to establish its affiliation to the series within the section. There was clear support for the species status of the material known as Solanum hannemanii in genebank collections, but the AFLP data were inconclusive about its relationships to the other investigated species. Morphological data and single- to low-copy nuclear DNA restriction enzyme site data were used to test subspecies circumscriptions of Solanum bulbocastanum and S. cardiophyllum. A prior chloroplast DNA analysis showed these species to be part of two main clades: 1. S. bulbocastanum subsp. bulbocastanum, S. bulbocastanum subsp. dolichophyllum, S. bulbocastanum subsp. partitum, S. cardiophyllum subsp. cardiophyllum and S. cardiophyllum subsp. lanceolatum, and 2. S. cardiophyllum subsp. ehrenbergii and other Mexican diploid species. The nuclear DNA and morphological data showed S. cardiophyllum subsp. ehrenbergii to be slightly distinguishable from the other subspecies of S. cardiophyllum, and do not support the distinction of subspecies within either species.
