This Best Practice Guidance covers the requirements for the selection and validation of disinfectants for use in containment level 3 (CL3) farm animal facilities It is important any disinfectant used in CL3 animal facilities must be selected and validated as fit for purpose with regard to both the target organism and also the situation of use.

This review seeks to better define these terms, in addition to discussing the design, construction, and operation of safe and secure biocontainment facilites. These latter tasks require teams made up of architects, engineers, scientists, and public officials with complementary, but sometimes also conflicting interests.

Fumigation is defined as an operation in which a substance is releasedinto the atmosphere so as to form a gas to control or kill pests or other undesirable organisms. This document only applies to formaldehyde fumigation but a lot of the basic principles could be applied to otherfumigants such as hydrogen peroxide vapours treatment. This is part of a series of guidance documents produced by the NADIR FP7 project. There are various international and national standards in place for undertaking infectious work in animals with pathogens that require high containment facilities. These guidance documents be examples of how these can be practically interpreted.
