Although long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) constitute the majority of the human transcriptome, the functional roles of most remain elusive. While protein-coding genes in macrophage biology have been extensively studied, the contribution of lncRNAs in this context is poorly understood. Given the vast number of lncRNAs (>20,000), identifying candidates for functional characterization poses a significant challenge. Here, we present two complementary approaches to pinpoint and investigate lncRNAs involved in monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation: RNA-seq for functional inference and a high-throughput functional screen. These strategies enabled us to identify four lncRNA regulators of monocyte differentiation: lincRNA-JADE1, lincRNA-ANXA3, GATA2-AS1, and PPP2R5C-AS1. Preliminary insights suggest these lncRNAs may act in cis through neighbouring protein-coding genes, although their precise mechanisms remain to be elucidated. We further discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these methodologies, along with validation pipelines crucial for establishing lncRNA functionality.

Nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) prevalence is a rising public health concern. We assessed the long-term healthcare systems perspective of costs incurred by 147 NTM-PD patients at a tertiary hospital in South Korea. Median cumulative total medical cost in managing NTM-PD patients was US $5,044 (interquartile range US $3,586–$9,680) over 49.7 months (interquartile range 33.0–68.2 months) of follow-up. The major cost drivers were diagnostic testing and medication, accounting for 59.6% of total costs. Higher costs were associated with hospitalization for Mycobacterium abscessus infection and pulmonary comorbidities. Of the total medical care costs, 50.2% were patient co-payments resulting from limited national health insurance coverage. As South Korea faces significant problems of poverty during old age and increasing NTM-PD prevalence, the financial and socio-economic burden of NTM-PD may become a major public health concern that should be considered with regard to adequate strategies for NTM-PD patients.

Background Despite the global increase in nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), clinical characteristics show geographical variations. We investigated the clinical characteristics of patients with NTM-PD in South Korea. Methods We systematically reviewed articles concerning patients with NTM-PD in South Korea until February 2022. Individual participant data, regardless of treatment, were collected using a standard case report form. Results Data of 6,489 patients from 11 hospitals between 2002 and 2019 were analyzed. The mean age was 61.5±11.7 years, of whom 57.7% were women. Mycobacterium avium (41.4%) and Mycobacterium intracellulare (38.4%) comprised most of the causative species, followed by Mycobacterium abscessus subspecies abscessus (8.6%) and M. abscessus subspecies massiliense (7.8%). Bronchiectasis (59.4%) was the most common pulmonary comorbidity. Although reported cases of NTM-PD increased over the years, the proportions of causative species and radiologic forms remained similar. Abstract Background Evidence-based interventions (EBIs) often address normative behaviors. If a behavior is also common among clinicians, they may be skeptical about the necessity or effectiveness of an EBI. Alternatively, clinicians’ attitudes and behaviors may be misaligned, or they may lack the knowledge and self-efficacy to deliver the EBI. Several EBIs address unhealthy alcohol use, a common and often culturally acceptable behavior. But unhealthy alcohol use may be particularly harmful to people with HIV (PWH). Here, we present an implementation trial using an experiential implementation strategy to address clinicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. Clinicians receive the experiential intervention before they begin delivering an evidence-based brief alcohol intervention (BAI) to PWH with unhealthy alcohol use. Methods Design: In this hybrid type 3 implementation-effectiveness cluster randomized controlled trial, ART clinics (n = 30) will be randomized 1:1 to facilitation, a flexible strategy to address implementation barriers, or facilitation plus the experiential brief alcohol intervention (EBAI). In the EBAI arm, clinicians, irrespective of their alcohol use, will be offered the BAI as experiential learning. EBAI will address clinicians’ alcohol-related attitudes and behaviors and increase their knowledge and confidence to deliver the BAI. Participants: ART clinic staff will be enrolled and assessed at pre-BAI training, post-BAI training, 3, 12, and 24 months. All PWH at the ART clinics who screen positive for unhealthy alcohol use will be offered the BAI. A subset of PWH (n = 810) will be enrolled and assessed at baseline, 3, and 12 months. Outcomes: We will compare implementation outcomes (acceptability, fidelity, penetration, costs, and sustainability) and effectiveness outcomes (viral suppression and alcohol use) between the two arms. We will assess the impact of site-level characteristics on scaling-up the BAI. We will also evaluate how experiencing the BAI affected clinical staff’s alcohol use and clinic-level alcohol expectations in the EBAI arm. Discussion This trial contributes to implementation science by testing a novel strategy to implement a behavior change intervention in a setting in which clinicians themselves may engage in the behavior. Experiential learning may be useful to address normative and difficult to change lifestyle behaviors that contribute to chronic diseases. Cap-assisted endoscopy refers to a procedure in which a short tube made of a polymer (mostly transparent) is attached to the distal tip of the endoscope to enhance its diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. It is reported to be particularly useful in: (1) minimizing blind spots during screening colonoscopy, (2) providing a constant distance from a lesion for clear visualization during magnifying endoscopy, (3) accurately assessing the size of various gastrointestinal lesions, (4) preventing mucosal injury during foreign body removal, (5) securing adequate workspace in the submucosal space during endoscopic submucosal dissection or third space endoscopy, (6) providing an optimal approach angle to a target, and (7) suctioning mucosal and submucosal tissue with negative pressure for resection or approximation. Here, we review various applications of attachable caps in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and their future implications.

This paper presents a phased array system (PAS) with built-in calibration to reduce cost and improve the accuracy for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Unlike other high-complexity and high-cost calibration methods, our proposed built-in calibration achieves a lower cost and low complexity by detecting only the magnitude. Conventional built-in calibration uses a mixer, thus causing high power consumption and high cost. However, our proposed built-in calibration method searches for the minimum of the vector-sum point from the signal by sampled lines on-board, resulting in a higher accuracy. The vector-sum point goes to a minimum when the phase and magnitude are in balance. Therefore, the phase and magnitude imbalance can be easily monitored by controlling phase shifters and attenuators in PAS. To verify our proposed built-in calibration in PAS, a T/Rx with four RF-chains and sampled lines was fabricated at 5.8 GHz. Its performance was then demonstrated through simulated and measured results. Moreover, a communication performance evaluation using an actual vehicle was performed both before and after calibration. As a result, we found that a signal without distortion was transmitted after calibration.

Los resultados y las conclusiones de este estudio aportan información valiosa para los directores de las micro y pequeñas empresas (mypes) de San Juan del Río, Querétaro. El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar hasta qué grado la innovación representa una ventaja competitiva en las mypes del municipio de San Juan del Río, Querétaro. Se aplicaron de manera aleatoria 582 cuestionarios a los directivos de las mypes. Los hallazgos revelan que la capacidad de innovar no sólo mejora el desempeño de estas empresas, sino que también les otorga una ventaja competitiva en un entorno empresarial cada vez más desafiante. Abstract Results and conclusions of this study contribute valuable information to micro and small enterprise (MSE) directors in San Juan del Río, Querétaro. The aim of this research is to analyze to what degree innovation represents a competitive advantage in MSEs within the municipality of San Juan del Rio, Queretaro. 582 questionnaires were applied randomly to MSE directors. Findings revealed that the capacity for innovation not only improved these companies’ performance, but also gave them a competitive advantage in an increasingly challenging business environment.

Abstract As the importance of utilizing real‐world data (RWD)/real‐world evidence (RWE) for supporting regulatory scientific decision‐making continues to grow, experiences and inputs from experts become crucial for developing a systematic and practice‐oriented plan for the use of fit‐for‐purpose RWD/RWE. This study aimed to survey relevant experts from government agencies, industries, and academia to identify prerequisites for the drug life cycle in Korea. The questionnaire comprised the following: (A) the definition and categories of RWD/RWE, (B) the suitability and feasibility of using RWD/RWE at each authorization stage by the types of RWD, and (C) the challenges and solutions for the use of RWD/RWE. A total of 46 respondents completed the online survey, with 89.1% of them having prior experience with RWD/RWE usage. A majority of respondents agreed that RWD can be obtained from various sources. Among these sources, the registry was the most suitable source. It is suitable to compensate for the limitations of randomized control trials and ensure quality in data collection. Though there was consensus among the respondents for the use of RWD/RWE in post‐marketing surveillance, the use of such data in new drug application (NDA) was disagreeable. Respondents considered it necessary to write a protocol in advance for RWD collection and RWE generation, for all RWD types. In conclusion, this study examined the perceptions of experts for RWD/RWE use at each approval stage of drugs. The results suggest that guidelines for the fit‐for‐purpose use of RWD/RWE should be developed via careful deliberation among experts in the future.

Centella asiatica, a traditional herb, is widely recognized for its pharmacologically active components, such as asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid. These components render it a highly sought-after ingredient in various industries, including cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This study aimed to enhance the production and activity of these pharmacological constituents of C. asiatica using the plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium Priestia megaterium HyangYak-01 during its cultivation. To achieve this goal, the researchers conducted field experiments, which revealed an increase in the production of pharmacologically active compounds in C. asiatica cultivated with a P. megaterium HyangYak-01 culture solution. Additionally, quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOF MS) confirmed that the composition ratios of the C. asiatica extract treated with the P. megaterium HyangYak-01 culture solution differed from those of the untreated control and type strain-treated groups. Skin cell experiments indicated that the C. asiatica extract treated with the P. megaterium HyangYak-01 culture solution exhibited greater skin barrier improvement and less pronounced inflammatory responses than those from plants grown without the bacterial culture solution. This study demonstrates that microbial treatment during plant cultivation can beneficially influence the production of pharmacological constituents, suggesting a valuable approach toward enhancing the therapeutic properties of plants.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection and invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) infection cause a significant global health and economic burden. This systematic review aims to investigate the reported economic burden of NTS and iNTS infection, identify research gaps, and suggest future research directions. Data from PubMed and Embase databases up to April 2022 were reviewed, and articles were screened based on predefined criteria. Cost data were extracted, categorized into direct medical costs (DMCs), direct non-medical costs (DNMCs), and indirect costs (ICs), and converted into US dollars (year 2022). Data primarily originated from high-income countries (37 out of 38), with limited representation from Africa and resource-limited settings. For inpatients, DMCs were the primary cost driver for both NTS and iNTS illnesses, with estimates ranging from USD 545.9 (Taiwan, a region of China) to USD 21,179.8 (Türkiye) for NTS and from USD 1973.1 (Taiwan, a region of China) to USD 32,507.5 (United States of America) for iNTS per case. DNMCs and ICs varied widely across studies. Although study quality improved over time, methodological differences persisted. This review underscores the lack of economic data on NTS and iNTS in resource-limited settings. It also highlights the need for economic burden data in resource-limited settings and a standardized approach to generate global datasets, which is critical for informing policy decisions, especially regarding future vaccines.

Background/Aims The short- and long-term effects of adalimumab (ADA) on Korean patients with intestinal Behcet’s disease (BD) for remain unclear. Therefore, a multicenter study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ADA in Korean patients with intestinal BD in a real-world setting. Methods The medical records of 67 patients with BD prescribed ADA between January 2012 and December 2020 at five referral centers in Korea were retrospectively analyzed and the safety and efficacy of ADA within 52 weeks were assessed. To evaluate the clinical efficacy of ADA, the Disease Activity Index for Intestinal BD (DAIBD) and representative blood biochemical markers were compared at 0, 12, 24, and 52 weeks of ADA treatment. Results During the follow-up period of 52 weeks, 46 patients continued ADA treatment. The cumulative drug survival rate was 83.5%. The DAIBD score decreased over the study period (p < 0.001). Abstract Group A Streptococcus causes a wide range of diseases from relatively mild infections including pharyngitis to more severe illnesses such as invasive diseases and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Our aim is to estimate the cost-effectiveness of a hypothetical Strep A vaccine on multiple disease manifestations at the global-level. Cost-effectiveness analyses were carried out by building on the potential epidemiological impact of vaccines that align with the WHO’s Preferred Product Characteristics for Strep A vaccines. Maximum vaccination costs for a cost-effective vaccination strategy were estimated at the thresholds of 1XGDP per capita and health opportunity costs. The maximum cost per fully vaccinated person for Strep A vaccination to be cost-effective was $385–$489 in high-income countries, $213–$312 in upper-income-income countries, $74–$132 in lower-middle-income countries, and $37–$69 in low-income countries for routine vaccination at birth and 5 years of age respectively. While the threshold costs are sensitive to vaccine characteristics such as efficacy, and waning immunity, a cost-effective Strep A vaccine will lower morbidity and mortality burden in all income settings.

Abstract Considering the lack of existing evidence on economic burden for diseases caused by group A Streptococcus, we estimated the economic burden per episode for selected diseases. Each cost component of direct medical costs (DMCs), direct non-medical costs (DNMCs), and indirect costs (ICs) was separately extrapolated and aggregated to estimate the economic burden per episode by income group as classified by the World Bank. Adjustment factors for DMC and DNMC were generated to overcome related data insufficiencies. To address uncertainty surrounding input parameters, a probabilistic multivariate sensitivity was carried out. The average economic burden per episode ranged from $22 to $392 for pharyngitis, $25 to $2,903 for impetigo, $47 to $2,725 for cellulitis, $662 to $34,330 for invasive and toxin-mediated infections, $231 to $6,332 for acute rheumatic fever (ARF), $449 to $11,717 for rheumatic heart disease (RHD), and $949 to $39,560 for severe RHD across income groups. The economic burden for multiple Group A Streptococcus diseases underscores an urgent need to develop effective prevention strategies including vaccines.

Abstract Loss of function in the tumor suppressor gene TP53 is the most common alteration seen in human cancer. In mice, P53 deletion in all cells leads predominantly to the development of T-cell lymphomas, followed by B-cell lymphomas, sarcomas and teratomas. In order to dissect the role of P53 in the hematopoietic system, we generated and analyzed two different mouse models deficient for P53. A pan-hematopoietic P53 deletion mouse was created using Vav1-Cre based deletion; and a B-cell-specific deletion mouse was created using a CD19-Cre based deletion. The Vav1-P53CKO mice predominantly developed T-cell malignancies in younger mice, and myeloid malignancies in older mice. In T-cell malignancies, there was accelerated thymic cell maturation with overexpression of Notch1 and its downstream effectors. CD19-P53CKO mice developed marginal zone expansion in the spleen, followed by marginal zone lymphoma, some of which progressed to diffuse large B-cell lymphomas. Interestingly, marginal zone and diffuse large B-cell lymphomas had a unique gene expression signature characterized by activation of the PI3K pathway, compared with wild type marginal zone or follicular cells of the spleen. This study demonstrates lineage specific P53 deletion leading to distinct phenotypes secondary to unique gene expression programs set in motion.

Benign mediastinal cysts are challenging to diagnose. Although Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and EUS-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) can accurately diagnose mediastinal foregut cysts, little is known about their complications. This paper reports a rare case in which EUS-FNA performed on mediastinal hemangioma resulted in an aortic hematoma. A 29-year-old female patient was commissioned for EUS of an asymptomatic accidental mediastinal lesion. Chest CT revealed a 4.9×2.9×10.1 cm thin-walled cystic mass in the posterior mediastinum. EUS revealed a large, anechoic cystic lesion with a regular thin wall with negative Doppler. EUS-guided FNA was performed using a single-use 19-gauge aspiration needle (EZ Shot 3; Olympus, Tokyo, Japan), and approximately 70 cc of serous pinkish fluid was aspirated. The patient was in a stable condition with no signs of acute complication. One day after EUS-FNA, thoracoscopic resection for mediastinal mass was conducted. The purple and multi-loculated large cyst was removed. Upon removal, however, an aortic hematoma caused by a focal descending aortic wall injury was observed. After a few days of close observation, the patient was discharged upon stable 3D aorta angio CT findings. This paper reports a rare and severe complication of EUS-FNA, in which an aspiration needle caused a direct injury to the aorta. The injection must be performed carefully to avoid damaging the adjacent organs or digestive tract walls.

This paper presents a highly efficient phased array calibration system for phase and magnitude error correction. The proposed calibration system is based on far-field scanning of the array antenna under test at factory level. Since the proposed structure requires a magnitude detection only for vector calibration, low circuit complexity can be achieved. Unlike the conventional far-field calibration based on rotating-element electric-field vector (REV) method to find maximum vector-sum point, the proposed system detects the minimum vector-sum point and tracks the behavior of the null point. To verify the feasibility of the proposed system for large-scale array antenna, 4 × 4 phased array antenna is implemented at 5.8 GHz. Then, the proposed method is applied to the phased array antenna and compared with the conventional REV method.

ABSTRACT Potato virus Y (PVY) is one of the foremost plant viruses affecting potato plants and production. Many diagnostic and detection techniques are available to detect and prevent the spread of this virus. Serological analyses, such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), are widely used in laboratories as well as in the field. In addition, recently, serological methods using whole or recombinant antibodies have been developed. However, these antibodies are unstable under certain chemical conditions and can be easily degraded by exposure to enzymes. M13KO7, a derivative of bacteriophage M13, with a filamentous structure similar to PVY, was used for antibody screening. We found that PVY and “bald” M13KO7 had binding activity similar to that of antigen-antibody in ELISA analyses. The binding interactions between PVY and M13KO7 were highly specific. A new method for detecting PVY using ELISA analysis with M13KO7 was developed in this study. These results provide new insights into two virus-binding interactions and novel systems for the detection of plant viruses. IMPORTANCE In this study, we confirmed the binding of M13KO7 to Potato virus Y (PVY) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. M13KO7 is a “bald” bacteriophage in which no recombinant antibody is displayed. M13KO7 is easy to propagate by using Escherichia coli, making this method more reasonable in economic perspective. This paper presents a compact broadband stepped bow-tie antenna for ambient RF energy harvesting (RFEH). The proposed antenna consists of stepped shapes for wide bandwidth, making it possible to investigate ambient RF energy in entire cellular bands. In addition, the antenna is composed of a bow-tie shape to achieve compactness for internet of things (IoT) sensors. We explain the design steps taken to achieve this wide bandwidth, analyzing the surface current distributions with respect to the number of stepped shapes through an EM simulation. In addition, we cut the broadband antenna in half and integrated it with the RFEH circuit for compactness, causing impedance matching to deteriorate. The novel modified bow-tie shaped half antenna improved impedance matching, which is analyzed with the surface current distribution. We found that the proposed antenna has a fractional bandwidth of 125% of $S_{11} < -10$ dB, ranging from 0.85 GHz to 3.66 GHz with a compact dimension of 68 mm $\times107$ mm ( $0.19\,\,\lambda _{0} \times 0.30\,\,\lambda _{0}$ ). With the proposed antenna, we investigated ambient RF energy at several outdoor sites and chose the feasible frequency bands (0.9 GHz and 1.8 GHz). For the bands, the RFEH circuit was designed consisting of a rectifier and power management unit (PMU), and integrated into the proposed antenna. In one site, we experimented and verified the RFEH with the antenna. The broadband and compact antenna in this paper can contribute to implementing the RFEH prototype for the capability to be used as a power source for IoT sensors.

Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in humans, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including fatality. The molecular mechanisms surrounding the effects of viral infection on the host RNA machinery remain poorly characterized. We used a comparative transcriptomics approach to investigate the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the host mRNA and sRNA expression machinery in a human lung epithelial cell line (Calu-3) and an African green monkey kidney cell line (Vero-E6). Upon infection, we observed global changes in host gene expression and differential expression of dozens of host miRNAs, many with known links to viral infection and immune response. Additionally, we discovered an expanded landscape of more than a hundred SARS-CoV-2-derived small viral RNAs (svRNAs) predicted to interact with differentially expressed host mRNAs and miRNAs. svRNAs are derived from distinct regions of the viral genome and sequence signatures suggest they are produced by a non-canonical biogenesis pathway. 52 of the 67 svRNAs identified in Calu-3 cells are predicted to interact with differentially expressed miRNAs, with many svRNAs having multiple targets. Accordingly, we speculate that these svRNAs may play a role in SARS-CoV-2 propagation by modulating post-transcriptional gene regulation, and that methods for antagonizing them may have therapeutic value.

Abstract Background The global prevalence and incidence of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection are increasing. However, the prevalence of NTM infection-associated comorbidities remains understudied. Thus, we investigated the comorbidities associated with NTM infection using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS–NSC) 2.0 database of the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Methods In this case–control study, patients with NTM infection and controls aged 20–89 years of age were matched 1:4 by sex, age, region, and income. A total of 26 comorbidities were selected based on previous reports and claims data analysis. The distribution of comorbidities was compared between patients with NTM infection and controls by sex and age using logistic regression analysis. Results In total, 893 patients (379 men and 514 women) with NTM infection (mean age, 56.1 years) and 3,572 controls (mean age, 55.6 years) were included. The odds ratio for prevalence of respiratory diseases, metabolic diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, skin diseases, mental diseases, and neoplasms was significantly higher in patients with NTM infection than in the control group. Among comorbid diseases, the odds ratios (ORs) for the prevalence of the respiratory diseases such as bronchiectasis (OR [95% confidence interval (CI)]: 26.79 [19.69–36.45]) and interstitial pneumonitis (OR [95% CI]: 15.10 [7.15–31.89]) were the highest. No significant differences were observed in NTM infection-related comorbidities between men and women. In the younger age group (20–39 years old), the prevalence of respiratory and systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes was higher in the patient group than in the control group. Conclusions NTM infection is associated with several respiratory and systemic diseases that should be considered when providing medical care to patients with NTM infection.

Abstract There is currently large uncertainty over the impacts of climate change on precipitation trends over the US west coast. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are a significant source of US west coast precipitation and trends in ARs can provide insight into future precipitation trends. There are already a variety of different methods used to identify ARs, but many are used in contexts that are often difficult to apply to large climate datasets due to their computational cost and requirement of integrated vapor transport as an input variable, which can be expensive to compute in climate models at high temporal frequencies. Using deep learning (DL) to track ARs is a unique approach that can alleviate some of the computational challenges that exist in more traditional methods. However, some questions still remain regarding its flexibility and robustness. This research investigates the consistency of a DL methodology of tracking ARs with more established algorithms to demonstrate its high‐level performance for future studies.

Abstract Bacterial infection is a common finding in patients, who develop medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) by the long-term and/or high-dose use of anti-resorptive agents such as bisphosphonate (BPs). However, pathological role of bacteria in MRONJ development at the early stage remains controversial. Here, we demonstrated that commensal microbiota protects against MRONJ development in the pulp-exposed periapical periodontitis mouse model. C57/BL6 female mice were treated with intragastric broad-spectrum antibiotics for 1 week. Zoledronic acid (ZOL) through intravenous injection and antibiotics in drinking water were administered for throughout the experiment. Pulp was exposed on the left maxillary first molar, then the mice were left for 5 weeks after which bilateral maxillary first molar was extracted and mice were left for additional 3 weeks to heal. All mice were harvested, and cecum, maxilla, and femurs were collected. ONJ development was assessed using μCT and histologic analyses. When antibiotic was treated in mice, these mice had no weight changes, but developed significantly enlarged ceca compared to the control group (CTL mice). Periapical bone resorption prior to the tooth extraction was similarly prevented when treated with antibiotics, which was confirmed by decreased osteoclasts and inflammation. ZOL treatment with pulp exposure significantly increased bone necrosis as determined by empty lacunae and necrotic bone amount. Furthermore, antibiotics treatment could further exacerbate bone necrosis, with increased osteoclast number. Our findings suggest that the commensal microbiome may play protective role, rather than pathological role, in the early stages of MRONJ development.

This paper presents a pattern reconfigurable dual-polarized dipole antenna with staggered parasitic elements operating in 3.5 GHz band. The proposed antenna is designed by assembling two linearly polarized antennas to be orthogonally polarized, and each antenna includes two parasitic elements and a single dipole element. A circuit including a varactor is inserted into each parasitic element, and the current phase of the parasitic element changes according to the capacitance of the varactor. Each antenna has a beam steering range of about ±30° in the E-plane, and the beamwidth and gain are maintained uniformly regardless of the steering angle due to the angled parasitic element. Also, because of the continuously changing characteristic of the varactor, the beam of the proposed antenna is steered continuously, and only four varactors are used. The size of the fabricated dual-polarized antenna is $1.40\lambda _{0}\times 1.40\lambda _{0}\times 0.47\lambda _{0}$ , and the measured results confirm that the antenna has an average gain of around 6 dB with 0.3 dB gain variation.

On-board data reduction is a major concern in designing of a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system since the volume of acquired SAR data is generally much higher than the downlink capability to the ground-station. The dechirp-on-receive (DoR) method is considered the state-of-the-art SAR data reduction technique. If there is deramping hardware in the SAR instrument, DoR is an effective method to reduce the volume of images for high resolution modes. In this paper, we use a digital signal processing method which applies a modified discrete Fourier transform (MDFT) filter bank for SAR data reduction. We call this method MDFT band selection filter (MDFT-BSF). This paper presents a quantitative analysis of the MDFT-BSF on data reduction performance. In addition, we provide a relationship between the data reduction performance and the number of sub-bands ( $M$ ), and show that there is an optimal value of $M$ that minimizes the volume of on-board SAR data. An evaluation of MDFT-BSF including a comparison with the DoR method presents that MDFT-BSF has an advantage for SAR data reduction. We show that MDFT-BSF can be implemented and operated on commercial space-grade FPGAs by the development of a spaceborne SAR digital receiver.

El objetivo de la presente investigación es analizar la influencia del liderazgo en la comunicación organizacional de la micro y pequeña empresa del municipio de San Juan del Río, Querétaro. Se consideró un muestreo probabilístico, aplicándose 582 encuestas a los directivos de las empresas de San Juan del Río, obteniendo como principal resultado que el liderazgo tiene un impacto significativo en la comunicación organizacional, y depende del estilo y forma de comunicación del líder el éxito de la organización. Abstract One of the relevant aspects of a micro and small enterprise’s (MSE) success is leadership, and a fundamental aspect of this is communication. The objective of this research is to analyze how leadership influences organizational communication in micro and small enterprises in the municipality of San Juan del Río, Querétaro. Probabilistic sampling was considered, applying 582 surveys to managers of companies from San Juan del Río. The main result obtained was that leadership has a significant impact on organizational communication, and the success of the organization depends on the style and the manner of communication of its leader.

Background and objective: The global prevalence and incidence of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infections are increasing; however, population-level data on healthcare use and medical costs for people with NTM infections are limited. Thus, we investigated the rates of healthcare use and medical costs of people with NTM infections in South Korea using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 to 2015. Methods: In this cohort study, people with and without NTM infection aged 20–89 years were matched 1 to 4 by sex, age, Charlson comorbidity index, and year of diagnosis. The overall and annual average healthcare use and medical costs were calculated. In addition, trends in healthcare use and medical costs for each of the 3 years before and after NTM diagnosis were investigated for people diagnosed with NTM infection. Results: A total of 798 individuals (336 men and 462 women) diagnosed with NTM infection and 3192 controls were included in the study. This paper investigates a retrospective on the Journal of Derivatives and Quantitative Studies (JDQS) on its 30th anniversary based on bibliometric. JDQSs yearly publications, citations, impact factors, and centrality indices grew up in early 2010s, and diminished in 2020. Keyword network analysis reveals the JDQS's main keywords including behavioral finance, implied volatility, information asymmetry, price discovery, KOSPI200 futures, volatility, and KOSPI200 options. Citations of JDQS articles are mainly driven by article age, demeaned age squared, conference, nonacademic authors and language. In comparison between number of views and downloads for JDQS articles, we find that recent changes in publisher and editorial and publishing policies have increased visibility of JDQS.

Abstract Industry 4.0 has encouraged micro and small enterprises (MSEs) to undertake a transformation of their processes allowing the use of their resources more efficiently creating an image of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The objective of this research is the analysis of the degree of integration of CSR within MSE 4.0, where a probabilistic sample was considered by applying 407 surveys to company directors in San Juan del Río, Queretaro, primarily resulting that CSR in ISO 2600 is not integrated in industry 4.0, although it is evident that good practices for the care of the environment and social commitment cannot be discarded.

Objective The incidences of prehospital advanced airway management by emergency medical technicians in South Korea are increasing; however, whether this procedure improves the survival outcomes of patients experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the association between prehospital advanced airway management and neurologic outcomes according to a transport time interval (TTI) using the Korean Cardiac Arrest Research Consortium database. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the favorable database entries that were prospectively collected between October 2015 and December 2016. Patients aged 18 years or older who experienced cardiac arrest that was presumed to be of a medical etiology and that occurred prior to the arrival of emergency medical service personnel were included. The exposure variable was the type of prehospital airway management provided by emergency medical technicians. The primary endpoint was a favorable neurologic outcome. Results Of 1,871 patients who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, 785 (42.0%), 121 (6.5%), and 965 (51.6%) were managed with bag-valve-mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation (ETI), and supraglottic airway (SGA) devices, respectively. SGAs and ETI provided no advantage in terms of favorable neurologic outcome in patients with TTIs ≥12 minutes (odds ratio [OR], 1.37; confidence interval [CI], 0.65–2.87 for SGAs; OR, 1.31; CI, 0.30–5.81 for ETI) or in patients with TTI

Pre-mRNA splicing is an essential step of eukaryotic gene expression carried out by a series of dynamic macromolecular protein/RNA complexes, known collectively and individually as the spliceosome. This series of spliceosomal complexes define, assemble on, and catalyze the removal of introns. Molecular model snapshots of intermediates in the process have been created from cryo-EM data, however, many aspects of the dynamic changes that occur in the spliceosome are not fully understood. Caenorhabditis elegans follow the GU-AG rule of splicing, with almost all introns beginning with 5' GU and ending with 3' AG. These splice sites are identified early in the splicing cycle, but as the cycle progresses and "custody" of the pre-mRNA splice sites is passed from factor to factor as the catalytic site is built, the mechanism by which splice site identity is maintained or re-established through these dynamic changes is unclear. We performed a genetic screen in C. elegans for factors that are capable of changing 5' splice site choice. We report that KIN17 and PRCC are involved in splice site choice, the first functional splicing role proposed for either of these proteins. Previously identified suppressors of cryptic 5' splicing promote distal cryptic GU splice sites, however, mutations in KIN17 and PRCC instead promote usage of an unusual proximal 5' splice site which defines an intron beginning with UU, separated by 1nt from a GU donor. We performed high-throughput mRNA sequencing analysis and found that mutations in PRCC, and to a lesser extent KIN17, changed alternative 5' splice site usage at native sites genome-wide, often promoting usage of nearby non-consensus sites. Our work has uncovered both fine and coarse mechanisms by which the spliceosome maintains splice site identity during the complex assembly process.

Summary: The circulating metabolome provides unique insights into multiple sclerosis (MS) pathophysiology, but existing studies are relatively small or characterized limited metabolites. We test for differences in the metabolome between people with MS (PwMS; n = 637 samples) and healthy controls (HC; n = 317 samples) and assess the association between metabolomic profiles and disability in PwMS. We then assess whether metabolic differences correlate with changes in cellular gene expression using publicly available scRNA-seq data and whether identified metabolites affect human immune cell function. In PwMS, we identify striking abnormalities in aromatic amino acid (AAA) metabolites (p = 2.77E−18) that are also strongly associated with disability (p = 1.01E−4). Analysis of scRNA-seq data demonstrates altered AAA metabolism in CSF and blood-derived monocyte cell populations in PwMS. Treatment with AAA-derived metabolites in vitro alters monocytic endocytosis and pro-inflammatory cytokine production. We identify shifts in AAA metabolism resulting in the reduced production of immunomodulatory metabolites and increased production of metabotoxins in PwMS.

The primary aim of this study was to investigate the compositional differences of the first passed meconium microbiome in preterm and term infants, and the secondary aim was to compare the meconium microbiomes of preterm and term infants that later developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)/Feeding intolerance (FI) compared to those that did not develop NEC/FI. During the study period, a total of 108 preterm and term newborns' first passed meconium occurring within 72 hours of birth were collected and microbiome analyzed. Meconium microbiomes showed a disruption in the percentages of the core microbiome constituents in both the phylum and genus levels in infants born < 30 weeks of gestational age (GA) compared to those born ≥ 30 weeks of GA. In the phylum level, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, and in the genus level, Prevotella and Bacteroides, were predominant, with Prevotella accounting for 20–30% of the relative abundance. As GA increased, a significant increase in the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes (P for trend < 0.001) and decrease in Proteobacteria (P for trend = 0.049) was observed in the phylum level. In the genus level, as GA increased, Prevotella (P for trend < 0.001) and Bacteroides (P for trend = 0.002) increased significantly, whereas Enterococcus (P for trend = 0.020) decreased. Compared to the control group, the meconium of infants that later developed NEC/FI had significantly lower alpha diversities but similar beta-diversities. Furthermore, the NEC/FI group showed a significantly lower abundance of Bacteroidetes (P < 0.001), and higher abundance of Firmicutes (P = 0.034). To conclude, differences were observed in the composition of the first passed meconium in preterm and term infants that later develop NEC/FI compared to those that did not.

To simulate the ADME process such as absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion in the human body after drug administration and to confirm the applicability of the mass production process, a microfluidic chip injection molded with polycarbonate (injection-molded chip (I-M chip)) was fabricated. Polycarbonate materials were selected to minimize drug absorption. As a first step to evaluate the I-M chip, RPTEC (Human Renal Proximal Tubule Epithelial Cells) and HUVEC (Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells) were co-cultured, and live and dead staining, TEER (trans-epithelial electrical resistance), glucose reabsorption, and permeability were compared using different membrane pore sizes of 0.4 μm and 3 μm. Drug excretion was confirmed through a pharmacokinetic test with metformin and cimetidine, and the gene expression of drug transporters was confirmed. As a result, it was confirmed that the cell viability was higher in the 3 μm pore size than in the 0.4 μm, the cell culture performed better, and the drug secretion was enhanced when the pore size was large. The injection-molded polycarbonate microfluidic chip is anticipated to be commercially viable for drug screening devices, particularly ADME tests.
