Abstract

Turnera sidoides (x=7) is one of the few well-studied South American autopolyploid complexes. Since polyploidy has played a prominent role within this complex, ongoing studies in T. sidoides focus on understanding the mechanisms involved in the origin and the establishment of polyploids using integrative approaches. This paper synthesises the results of more than 20 years of research on this topic. Cytogenetics analysis provided evidences for the production of unreduced male and female gametes, supporting the hypothesis of bilateral sexual polyploidization as the mechanism of origin of polyploids in T. sidoides. The finding of viable triploids suggested that unilateral sexual polyploidization could also be an important mechanism for the origin of tetraploids in T. sidoides. The occurrence of plants continuously forming many unreduced gametes would play a key role in the establishment of neopolyploids in natural populations. Also, the higher number of propagules that tetraploids contribute to subsequent generations, the ability to multiply asexually by rhizomes, and the occurrence of occasional cases of self-compatibility and successful illegitimate crosses in polyploids increase the likelihood that a low frequency of neopolyploids can be maintained in natural populations of T. sidoides. In addition, integration of cytogeographic and genetic divergence data together with past niche modelling provided further insights supporting the hypothesis that historical climatic and geomorphological events provided favourable conditions for the establishment of autopolyploids, with the wider distribution of tetraploids of T. sidoides being the result of their range expansion.

Abstract

Considering the importance of the 26Al nuclei in Astrophysics, in this work, preliminary results regarding a campaign of measurements related with this radioisotope production, are presented. We have taken advantage of two different facilities: first, the radio-nucleus is produced by means of irradiation of targets selected in correlation with particular reactions; once the enrichment with 26Al was made, the targets are analyzed in an AMS machine to obtain the concentration of 26Al produced during the irradiation. With this off-line method, it is possible to measure acceptable small cross sections of a selected low energy reaction. In this work, our preliminary results for three different energies of 28Si(d,α)26Al reaction cross sections are shown, as well as our first considerations to commence with measurements of 25Mg(p,γ)26Al reaction cross sections below 1 MeV.

15. Facile sol-gel synthesis of ZnAl2O4 spinel nanoceramics for photocatalytic applications: H2 production and MB dye degradation.

Abstract

ZnAl2O4 spinel nanoceramic was successfully synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method and subsequent annealing at temperatures as low as 500 °C. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized spinels was evaluated for the H2 photocatalytic production and photodegradation of methylene blue dye (MB) under UV light irradiation. ZnAl2O4 spinels were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy, and Photoluminescence (PL). XRD revealed that the low-temperature calcination ZnAl2O4 spinel nanoceramics have a cubic crystalline structure and nanocrystallites sizes between 10–21 nm. The presence of carbon dot (CDs) nanoparticles is suggested by FTIR, UV-vis, and EDS characterization. Band gap values, estimated from diffuse reflectance spectra, are between 2.00 eV and 4.26 eV, for ZnAl2O4 calcined between 500 °C and 900 °C. The best H2 evolution was achieved with ZnAl2O4 treated at 500 °C reaching a 145 μmol g−1 production after 2 h. The highest percentage of MB dye degradation of 84%, after 120 min of UV irradiation, was achieved with ZnAl2O4 spinel treated at 900 °C. Highlights: Simple, rapid, efficient and low-cost sol-gel combustion synthesis method. Crystalline ZnAl2O4 spinel is obtained at temperatures as low as 500 °C. A nanostructured material with photocatalytic capacity for redox reactions is obtained. ZnAl2O4 spinel shows good photocatalytic activity without need of sacrificial agents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent decades, interest in the measurement of 10Be has increased due to its relevance in various fields of science. Trace amounts of 10Be produced from meteoric sources require sensitive accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements and robust sample preparation. The extraction, separation, and preparation of the appropriate oxide form for AMS require extensive and careful laboratory processing and certified reference materials to validate the chemical performance of the protocols used and the calibration of the AMS system in the measurement. In this work, the meteoric 10Be concentrations in two certified reference materials are characterized to establish their suitability as internal control standards for laboratory chemical preparation and AMS measurements of this radioisotope in our laboratory and the whole AMS community.
