There is considerable evidence that the superconductivity of Sr2RuO4 has two components. Among this evidence is a jump in the shear elastic modulus $c_{66}$ at the critical temperature $T_c$, observed in ultrasound measurements. Such a jump is forbidden for homogeneous single-component order parameters, and implies that $T_c$ should develop as a cusp under the application of shear strain with $\langle 110 \rangle$ principal axes. This shear strain should split the onset temperatures of the two components, if they coexist, or select one component if they do not. Here, we report measurements of $T_c$ and the elastocaloric effect of Sr2RuO4 under uniaxial stress applied along the $[110]$ lattice direction. Within experimental resolution, we resolve neither a cusp in the stress dependence of $T_c$, nor any second transition in the elastocaloric effect data. We show that reconciling these null results with the observed jumps in $c_{66}$ requires extraordinarily fine tuning to a triple point of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter space. In addition, our results are inconsistent with homogeneous time reversal symmetry breaking at a temperature $T_2 \leq T_c$ as identified in muon spin relaxation experiments.

We report on a new technique for measuring the dynamic Young's modulus, $E$, of quantum materials at low temperatures as a function of static tuning strain, $\epsilon$, in piezoactuator-driven pressure cells. In addition to a static tuning of stress and strain, we apply a small-amplitude, finite-frequency a.c. (1 Hz$ \lesssim \omega \lesssim $1000 Hz) uniaxial stress, $\sigma_{ac}$, to the sample and measure the resulting a.c. strain, $\epsilon_{ac}$, using a capacitive sensor to obtain the associated modulus $E$. We demonstrate the performance of the new technique through proof-of-principle experiments on the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, which is known for its rich temperature-strain phase diagram. In particular, we show that the magnitude of $E$, measured using this a.c. technique at low frequencies, exhibits a pronounced nonlinear elasticity, which is in very good agreement with previous Young's modulus measurements on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under [100] strain using a d.c. method (Noad et al., Science 382, 447-450 (2023)). By combining the new a.c. Young's modulus measurements with a.c. elastocaloric measurements in a single measurement, we demonstrate that these a.c. techniques are powerful in detecting small anomalies in the elastic properties of quantum materials. Finally, using the case of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ as an example, we demonstrate how the imaginary component of the modulus can provide additional information about the nature of ordered phases., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

In bulk Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, the strong sensitivity of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\text{c}}$ to nonmagnetic impurities provides robust evidence for a superconducting order parameter that changes sign around the Fermi surface. In superconducting epitaxial thin-film Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, the relationship between $T_{\text{c}}$ and the residual resistivity $\rho_0$, which in bulk samples is taken to be a proxy for the low-temperature elastic scattering rate, is far less clear. Using high-energy electron irradiation to controllably introduce point disorder into bulk single-crystal and thin-film Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, we show that $T_{\text{c}}$ is suppressed in both systems at nearly identical rates. This suggests that part of $\rho_0$ in films comes from defects that do not contribute to superconducting pairbreaking, and establishes a quantitative link between the superconductivity of bulk and thin-film samples.

In the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, uniaxial stress along the $[100]$ direction tunes the Fermi level through a Van Hove singularity (VHS) in the density of states, causing a strong enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature $T_\textrm{c}$. Here, we report measurements of the London penetration depth $\lambda$ as this tuning is performed. We find that the zero-temperature superfluid density, here defined as $\lambda(0)^{-2}$, increases by $\sim$15%, with a peak that coincides with the peak in $T_\textrm{c}$. We also find that the low temperature form of $\lambda(T)$ is quadratic over the entire strain range. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we find that the gap increases from $\Delta_0 \approx 350~\mu$eV in unstressed Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ to $\Delta_0 \approx 600~\mu$eV in a sample strained to near the peak in $T_c$. With a nodal order parameter, an increase in the superconducting gap could bring about an increase in the superfluid density through reduced sensitivity to defects and through reduced non-local effects in the Meissner screening. Our data indicate that tuning to the VHS increases the gap throughout the Brillouin zone, and that non-local effects are likely more important than reduced scattering.

The interplay of electronic and structural degrees of freedom in solids is a topic of intense research. Experience and intuition suggest that structural changes drive conduction electron behavior, because the large number of valence electrons dominate the structural properties. As part of a seminal paper written over sixty years ago, Lifshitz discussed an alternative possibility: lattice softening driven by conduction electrons at topological Fermi surface transitions. The effect he predicted, however, was small, and has not been convincingly observed. Using measurements of the stress-strain relationship in the ultra-clean metal Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, we reveal a huge softening of the Young's modulus at a Lifshitz transition of a two-dimensional Fermi surface, and show that it is indeed entirely driven by the conduction electrons of the relevant energy band., Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures (including supplementary information)

A circuit $\mathcal{C}$ samples a distribution $\mathbf{X}$ with an error $\epsilon$ if the statistical distance between the output of $\mathcal{C}$ on the uniform input and $\mathbf{X}$ is $\epsilon$. We study the hardness of sampling a uniform distribution over the set of $n$-bit strings of Hamming weight $k$ denoted by $\mathbf{U}^n_k$ for _decision forests_, i.e. every output bit is computed as a decision tree of the inputs. For every $k$ there is an $O(\log n)$-depth decision forest sampling $\mathbf{U}^n_k$ with an inverse-polynomial error [Viola 2012, Czumaj 2015]. We show that for every $\epsilon > 0$ there exists $\tau$ such that for decision depth $\tau \log (n/k) / \log \log (n/k)$, the error for sampling $\mathbf{U}_k^n$ is at least $1-\epsilon$. Our result is based on the recent robust sunflower lemma [Alweiss, Lovett, Wu, Zhang 2021, Rao 2019]. Our second result is about matching a set of $n$-bit strings with the image of a $d$-_local_ circuit, i.e. such that each output bit depends on at most $d$ input bits. We study the set of all $n$-bit strings whose Hamming weight is at least $n/2$. We improve the previously known locality lower bound from $\Omega(\log^* n)$ [Beyersdorff, Datta, Krebs, Mahajan, Scharfenberger-Fabian, Sreenivasaiah, Thomas and Vollmer, 2013] to $\Omega(\sqrt{\log n})$, leaving only a quartic gap from the best upper bound of $O(\log^2 n)$.

We present a top-down lower-bound method for depth-$4$ boolean circuits. In particular, we give a new proof of the well-known result that the parity function requires depth-$4$ circuits of size exponential in $n^{1/3}$. Our proof is an application of robust sunflowers and block unpredictability.

We report the evolution of the electronic structure at the surface of the layered perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under large in-plane uniaxial compression, leading to anisotropic $B_{1g}$ strains of ${\varepsilon_{xx}-\varepsilon_{yy}=-0.9\pm0.1\%}$. From angle-resolved photoemission, we show how this drives a sequence of Lifshitz transitions, reshaping the low-energy electronic structure and the rich spectrum of van Hove singularities that the surface layer of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ hosts. From comparison to tight-binding modelling, we find that the strain is accommodated predominantly by bond-length changes rather than modifications of octahedral tilt and rotation angles. Our study sheds new light on the nature of structural distortions at oxide surfaces, and how targeted control of these can be used to tune density of states singularities to the Fermi level, in turn paving the way to the possible realisation of rich collective states at the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ surface.

Under in-plane uniaxial stress, the largest Fermi surface sheet of the correlated metal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ undergoes a Lifshitz transition from an electron-like to an open geometry. We investigate the effects of this transition on transport through measurement of the longitudinal resistivity $\rho_{xx}$ and the Hall coefficient $R_\text{H}$. At temperatures where scattering is dominated by electron-electron scattering, $R_\text{H}$ becomes more negative across the Lifshitz transition, opposite to expectations from the change in Fermi surface topology. We show that this change in $R_\text{H}$ is explainable only if scattering changes throughout the Brillouin zone, not just at the point in $k$-space where the Lifshitz transition occurs. In a model of orbital-dependent scattering, the electron-electron scattering rate on sections of Fermi surface with $xy$ orbital weight decreases dramatically. On the other hand, at temperatures where defect scattering dominates $\rho_{xx}$ and $R_\text{H}$ are essentially constant across the Lifshitz transition., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

In-plane uniaxial pressure has been shown to strongly tune the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4 by approaching a Lifshitz transition and associated Van Hove singularity (VHS) in the density of states. At the VHS, $T_c$ and the in- and out-of-plane upper critical fields are all strongly enhanced, and the latter has changed its curvature as a function of temperature from convex to concave. However, due to strain inhomogeneity it has not been possible so far to determine how the upper critical fields change with strain. Here, we show the strain dependence of both upper critical fields, which was achieved due to an improved sample preparation. We find that the in-plane upper critical field is mostly linear in $T_c$. On the other hand, the out-of-plane upper critical field varies with a higher power in $T_c$, and peaks strongly at the VHS. The strong increase in magnitude and the change in form of $H_\mathrm{c2||c}$ occur very close to the Van Hove strain, and points to a strong enhancement of both the density of states and the gap magnitude at the Lifshitz transition.

Construction of optimal deformations is one of the long standing problems of computational mathematics. We consider the problem of computing quasi-isometric deformations with minimal possible quasi-isometry constant (global estimate for relative length change).We build our technique upon [Garanzha et al. 2021a], a recently proposed numerical optimization scheme that provably untangles 2D and 3D meshes with inverted elements by partially solving a finite number of minimization problems. In this paper we show the similarity between continuation problems for mesh untangling and for attaining prescribed deformation quality threshold. Both problems can be solved by a finite number of partial solutions of optimization problems which are based on finite element approximations of parameter-dependent hyperelastic functionals. Our method is based on a polyconvex functional which admits a well-posed variational problem. To sum up, we reliably build 2D and 3D mesh deformations with smallest known distortion estimates (quasi-isometry constants) as well as stable quasi conformal parameterizations for very stiff problems.

One of the main developments in unconventional superconductivity in the past two decades has been the discovery that most unconventional superconductors form phase diagrams that also contain other strongly correlated states. Many systems of interest are therefore close to more than one instability, and tuning between the resultant ordered phases is the subject of intense research1. In recent years, uniaxial pressure applied using piezoelectric-based devices has been shown to be a particularly versatile new method of tuning, leading to experiments that have advanced our understanding of the fascinating unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Here we map out its phase diagram using high-precision measurements of the elastocaloric effect in what we believe to be the first such study including both the normal and the superconducting states. We observe a strong entropy quench on entering the superconducting state, in excellent agreement with a model calculation for pairing at the Van Hove point, and obtain a quantitative estimate of the entropy change associated with entry to a magnetic state that is observed in proximity to the superconductivity. When Heisenberg spins interact antiferromagnetically on a triangular lattice and nearest-neighbor interactions dominate, the ground state is 120$^{\circ}$ antiferromagnetism. In this work, we probe the response of this state to lifting the triangular symmetry, through investigation of the triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$ under uniaxial stress by neutron diffraction and resistivity measurements. The periodicity of the magnetic order is found to change rapidly with applied stress; the rate of change indicates that the magnetic anisotropy is roughly forty times the stress-induced bond length anisotropy. At low stress, the incommensuration period becomes extremely long, on the order of 1000 lattice spacings; no locking of the magnetism to commensurate periodicity is detected. Separately, the magnetic structure is found to undergo a first-order transition at a compressive stress of $\sim$0.4 GPa, at which the interlayer ordering switches from a double- to a single-q structure., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted by New Journal of Physics

Applying in-plane uniaxial pressure to strongly correlated low-dimensional systems has been shown to tune the electronic structure dramatically. For example, the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ can be tuned through a single Van Hove singularity which results in a strong enhancement of both $T_\text{c}$ and $H_\text{c2}$. Out-of-plane ($c$ axis) uniaxial pressure is expected to tune the quasi-two-dimensional structure even more strongly, causing it to approach two Van Hove singularities simultaneously. Here we achieve a record value of $3.2$ GPa compression along the $c$ axis of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Although the rise in $H_\text{c2}$ shows that we are indeed approaching the van Hove points, $T_\text{c}$ is suppressed, a result that contradicts expectations based on simple two-dimensional models. As a first attempt to take the third dimension into account, we present three-dimensional calculations in the weak interaction limit, and discuss the extent to which they are consistent with observation. Our experimental results highlight the importance of out-of-plane effects in low-dimensional systems in general and provide new constraints on theories of the pairing interaction in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

We perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the oxygen-17 Knight shifts for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, while subjected to uniaxial stress applied along [100] direction. The resulting strain is associated with a strong variation of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the inferred magnetic response. A quasi-particle description based on density-functional theory calculations, supplemented by many-body renormalizations, is found to reproduce our experimental results, and highlights the key role of a van-Hove singularity. The Fermi liquid coherence scale is shown to be tunable by strain, and driven to low values as the associated Lifshitz transition is approached.

Recent experiments suggest that the superconducting order parameter of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has two components. A two-component order parameter has multiple degrees of freedom in the superconducting state that can result in low-energy collective modes or the formation of domain walls -- a possibility that would explain a number of experimental observations including the smallness of the time reversal symmetry breaking signal at T$_\mathrm{c}$ and telegraph noise in critical current experiments. We perform ultrasound attenuation measurements across the superconducting transition of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS). We find that the attenuation for compressional sound increases by a factor of seven immediately below T$_\mathrm{c}$, in sharp contrast with what is found in both conventional ($s$-wave) and high-T$_\mathrm{c}$ ($d$-wave) superconductors. We find our observations to be most consistent with the presence of domain walls between different configurations of the superconducting state. The fact that we observe an increase in sound attenuation for compressional strains, and not for shear strains, suggests an inhomogeneous superconducting state formed of two distinct, accidentally-degenerate superconducting order parameters that are not related to each other by symmetry. Whatever the mechanism, a factor of seven increase in sound attenuation is a singular characteristic with which any potential theory of the superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ must be reconciled.

A key question regarding the unconventional superconductivity of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ remains whether the order parameter is single- or two-component. Under a hypothesis of two-component superconductivity, uniaxial pressure is expected to lift their degeneracy, resulting in a split transition. The most direct and fundamental probe of a split transition is heat capacity. Here, we report measurement of heat capacity of samples subject to large and highly homogeneous uniaxial pressure. We place an upper limit on the heat-capacity signature of any second transition of a few per cent of that of the primary superconducting transition. The normalized jump in heat capacity, $\Delta C/C$, grows smoothly as a function of uniaxial pressure, favouring order parameters which are allowed to maximize in the same part of the Brillouin zone as the well-studied van Hove singularity. Mapping a triangulated surface to 2D space (or a tetrahedral mesh to 3D space) is the most fundamental problem in geometry processing.In computational physics, untangling plays an important role in mesh generation: it takes a mesh as an input, and moves the vertices to get rid of foldovers.In fact, mesh untangling can be considered as a special case of mapping where the geometry of the object is to be defined in the map space and the geometric domain is not explicit, supposing that each element is regular.In this paper, we propose a mapping method inspired by the untangling problem and compare its performance to the state of the art.The main advantage of our method is that the untangling aims at producing locally injective maps, which is the major challenge of mapping.In practice, our method produces locally injective maps in very difficult settings, and with less distortion than the previous work, both in 2D and 3D. We demonstrate it on a large reference database as well as on more difficult stress tests.For a better reproducibility, we publish the code in Python for a basic evaluation, and in C++ for more advanced applications.

Stoichiometric SnTe is theoretically a small gap semiconductor that undergoes a ferroelectric distortion on cooling. In reality however, crystals are always non-stoichiometric and metallic; the ferroelectric transition is therefore more accurately described as a polar structural transition. Here we study the Fermi surface using quantum oscillations as a function of pressure. We find the oscillation spectrum changes at high pressure, due to the suppression of the polar transition and less than 10 kbar is sufficient to stabilize the undistorted cubic lattice. This is accompanied by a large decrease in the Hall and electrical resistivity. Combined with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements this suggests the Fermi surface $L$-pockets have lower mobility than the tubular Fermi surfaces that connect them. Also captured in our DFT calculations is a small widening of the band gap and shift in density of states for the polar phase. Additionally we find the unusual phenomenon of a linear magnetoresistance that exists irrespective of the distortion that we attribute to regions of the Fermi surface with high curvature., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Unambiguous identification of the superconducting order parameter symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has remained elusive for more than a quarter century. While a chiral $p$-wave ground state analogue to superfluid $^3$He-$A$ was ruled out only very recently, other proposed $p$-wave scenarios are still viable. Here, field-dependent $^{17}$O Knight shift measurements are compared to corresponding specific heat measurements, previously reported. We conclude that the shift results can be accounted for by the expected field-induced quasiparticle response only. An upper bound for the condensate magnetic response of $<10\%$ of the normal state susceptibility is sufficient to exclude odd-parity candidates., Comment: Main Article: 4 pages 3 figures Supplement: 6 pages 4 figures

Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has stood as the leading candidate for a spin-triplet superconductor for 26 years. Recent NMR experiments have cast doubt on this candidacy, however, and it is difficult to find a theory of superconductivity that is consistent with all experiments. What is needed are symmetry-based experiments that can rule out broad classes of possible superconducting order parameters. Here we use resonant ultrasound spectroscopy to measure the entire symmetry-resolved elastic tensor of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ through the superconducting transition. We observe a thermodynamic discontinuity in the shear elastic modulus $c_{66}$, requiring that the superconducting order parameter is two-component. A two-component $p$-wave order parameter, such as $p_x+i p_y$, naturally satisfies this requirement. As this order parameter appears to be precluded by recent NMR experiments, we suggest that two other two-component order parameters, namely $\left\{d_{xz},d_{yz}\right\}$ or $\left\{d_{x^2-y^2},g_{xy(x^2-y^2)}\right\}$, are now the prime candidates for the order parameter of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Among unconventional superconductors, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has become a benchmark for experimentation and theoretical analysis because its normal-state electronic structure is known with exceptional precision, and because of experimental evidence that its superconductivity has, very unusually, a spontaneous angular momentum, i.e. a chiral state. This hypothesis of chirality is however difficult to reconcile with recent evidence on the spin part of the order parameter. Measurements under uniaxial stress offer an ideal way to test for chirality, because under uniaxial stress the superconducting and chiral transitions are predicted to split, allowing the empirical signatures of each to be identified separately. Here, we report zerofield muon spin relaxation (ZF-$\mu$SR) measurements on crystals placed under uniaxial stresses of up to 1.05 GPa. We report a clear stress-induced splitting between the onset temperatures of superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry breaking, consistent with qualitative expectations for chiral superconductivity. We also report the appearance of unexpected bulk magnetic order under a uniaxial stress of ~ 1.0 GPa in clean Sr$_2$RuO$_4$., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures

We show exponential lower bounds on resolution proof length for pigeonhole principle (PHP) formulas and perfect matching formulas over highly unbalanced, sparse expander graphs, thus answering the challenge to establish strong lower bounds in the regime between balanced constant-degree expanders as in [Ben-Sasson and Wigderson '01] and highly unbalanced, dense graphs as in [Raz '04] and [Razborov '03, '04]. We obtain our results by revisiting Razborov's pseudo-width method for PHP formulas over dense graphs and extending it to sparse graphs. This further demonstrates the power of the pseudo-width method, and we believe it could potentially be useful for attacking also other longstanding open problems for resolution and other proof systems.

Uniaxial pressure applied along an Ru-Ru bond direction induces an elliptical distortion of the largest Fermi surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, eventually causing a Fermi surface topological transition, also known as a Lifshitz transition, into an open Fermi surface. There are various anomalies in low-temperature properties associated with this transition, including maxima in the superconducting critical temperature and in resistivity. In the present paper, we report new measurements, employing new uniaxial stress apparatus and new measurements of the low-temperature elastic moduli, of the strain at which this Lifshitz transition occurs: a longitudinal strain $\varepsilon_{xx}$ of $(-0.44\pm0.06)\cdot10^{-2}$, which corresponds to a B$_{1g}$ strain $\varepsilon_{xx} - \varepsilon_{yy}$ of $(-0.66\pm0.09)\cdot10^{-2}$. This is considerably smaller than the strain corresponding to a Lifshitz transition in density functional theory calculations, even if the spin-orbit coupling is taken into account. Using dynamical mean-field theory we show that electronic correlations reduce the critical strain. It turns out that the orbital anisotropy of the local Coulomb interaction on the Ru site is furthermore important to bring this critical strain close to the experimental number, and thus well into the experimentally accessible range of strains.

In the triangular layered magnet PdCrO2 the intralayer magnetic interactions are strong, however the lattice structure frustrates interlayer interactions. In spite of this, long-range, 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic order condenses at $T_N = 38$~K. We show here through neutron scattering measurements under in-plane uniaxial stress and in-plane magnetic field that this occurs through a spontaneous lifting of the three-fold rotational symmetry of the nonmagnetic lattice, which relieves the interlayer frustration. We also show through resistivity measurements that uniaxial stress can suppress thermal magnetic disorder within the antiferromagnetic phase., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

The gap structure of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, which is a longstanding candidate for a chiral p-wave superconductor, has been investigated from the perspective of the dependence of its specific heat on magnetic field angles at temperatures as low as 0.06 K ($\sim 0.04T_{\rm c}$). Except near $H_{\rm c2}$, its fourfold specific-heat oscillation under an in-plane rotating magnetic field is unlikely to change its sign down to the lowest temperature of 0.06 K. This feature is qualitatively different from nodal quasiparticle excitations of a quasi-two-dimensional superconductor possessing vertical lines of gap minima. The overall specific-heat behavior of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ can be explained by Doppler-shifted quasiparticles around horizontal line nodes on the Fermi surface, whose in-plane Fermi velocity is highly anisotropic, along with the occurrence of the Pauli-paramagnetic effect. These findings, in particular, the presence of horizontal line nodes in the gap, call for a reconsideration of the order parameter of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures (main text) + 3 pages, 3 figures (supplemental material), accepted for publication in J. We report that the lowest energy transverse-optic phonon in metallic SnTe softens to near zero energy at the structural transition at $T_C=75 \text{~K}$ and importantly show that the energy of this mode below $T_C$ increases as the temperature decreases. Since the mode is a polar displacement this proves unambiguously that SnTe undergoes a ferroelectric displacement below $T_C$. Concentration gradients and imperfect stoichiometry in large crystals may explain why this was not seen in previous inelastic neutron scattering studies. Despite SnTe being metallic we find that the ferroelectric transition is similar to that in ferroelectric insulators, unmodified by the presence of conduction electrons: we find that (i) the damping of the polar mode is dominated by coupling to acoustic phonons rather than electron-phonon coupling (ii) the transition is almost an ideal continuous transition (iii) comparison with density functional calculations identifies the importance of dipolar-dipolar screening for understanding this behaviour., Comment: 5 pages main text with 4 figures. 5 pages of supplementary material with 7 figures
