5. Change of heat advection to the Barents sea

Abstract

At the present day flux of warm Atlantic waters into the Barents Sea influences on the change in the area of its ice cover. This paper estimates and analyzes the advective heat flux coming through a meridional section along 16.5° Еto the basin of the Barents Sea for the period from 1980 to 2015 based on ORAS4 reanalysis data. It was revealed that the Barents Sea entering heat flux is carried out by three jets in the southern, central and northern parts of the section and is62, 65, and 11 TW respectively, which are provided by water flows of 1.7, 2.1 and 0.5 Sv. A significant increase trend in heat flux occurs in central and northern streams, which is determined by trends in both water temperature and flow rates. The total heat flux into the Barents Sea basin has a significant positive trend with a value of 0.80 TW/year. Estimation of the trend revealed, that the central heat flux increased by 31% over the studied period, the northern heat flux increased most significantly – by 42%, which indicates the core of thermal activity on the sea border transfers to the north.

Abstract

Research on cognitive neurorehabilitation has shown the benefits of both neuropsychological therapy and physical activity on cognitive performance. In this article, we highlight the synergies between these approaches, particularly in the context of "cognitive exergames" that are video games combining cognitive and physical exercise. Even though this area of research is rather novel, the available data suggests cognitive and physical benefits in the elderly, as well as people with brain lesions or neurodegeneration, and point towards the development of multimodal cognitive neurorehabilitation.

Abstract

The Protvino accelerator facility located in the Moscow region, Russia, is in a good position to offer a rich experimental research program in the field of neutrino physics. Of particular interest is the possibility to direct a neutrino beam from Protvino towards the KM3NeT/ORCA detector, which is currently under construction in the Mediterranean Sea 40 km offshore Toulon, France. This proposal is known as P2O. Thanks to its baseline of 2595 km, this experiment would yield an unparalleled sensitivity to matter effects in the Earth, allowing for the determination of the neutrino mass ordering with a high level of certainty after only a few years of running at a modest beam intensity of ≈90kW. With a prolonged exposure (≈1500kWyear), a 2 σ sensitivity to the leptonic CP-violating Dirac phase can be achieved. A second stage of the experiment, comprising a further intensity upgrade of the accelerator complex and a densified version of the ORCA detector (Super-ORCA), would allow for up to a 6 σ sensitivity to CP violation and a 10 ∘- 17 ∘ resolution on the CP phase after 10 years of running with a 450 kW beam, competitive with other planned experiments. The initial composition and energy spectrum of the neutrino beam would need to be monitored by a near detector, to be constructed several hundred meters downstream from the proton beam target. The same neutrino beam and near detector set-up would also allow for neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements to be performed. A short-baseline sterile neutrino search experiment would also be possible. © 2019, The Author(s).

Abstract

The equations of V-antenna excitation by a pulse electromagnetic field are derived from Maxwell's equations considered in a space-time domain. The role of the magnetic field of the wave as a source of excitation has been clarified. The transient response of a V-antenna is calculated as a function of the material of a dielectric interlayer between the electrodes, the antenna opening angle and the electromagnetic wave incidence angle. Based on a nonsymmetric version of the V-antenna, transducers were fabricated and experimentally investigated. The results of calculations and measurements are in good agreement with each other. It is shown that one can obtain a transient response of an approximately step shape by adding signals from two oppositely directed antennas. The antenna proposed allows nanosecond low-amplitude electromagnetic pulses to be detected.

Abstract

Telegrapher's equations have been derived electrodynamically for the transmission line of two linear parallel conductors separated by a dielectric layer and excited by an electromagnetic field. The line coupling to a plane electromagnetic wave is illustrated for an arbitrary orientation of Poynting's vector and various polarization angles. The results are compared with the ones of other papers. Role of the magnetic field, while exciting the line, is clarified.

Abstract

Various lines of evidence accumulated over the past 30 years indicate that the cerebellum, long recognized as essential for motor control, also has considerable influence on perceptual processes. In this paper, we bring together experts from psychology and neuroscience, with the aim of providing a succinct but comprehensive overview of key findings related to the involvement of the cerebellum in sensory perception. The contributions cover such topics as anatomical and functional connectivity, evolutionary and comparative perspectives, visual and auditory processing, biological motion perception, nociception, self-motion, timing, predictive processing, and perceptual sequencing. While no single explanation has yet emerged concerning the role of the cerebellum in perceptual processes, this consensus paper summarizes the impressive empirical evidence on this problem and highlights diversities as well as commonalities between existing hypotheses. In addition to work with healthy individuals and patients with cerebellar disorders, it is also apparent that several neurological conditions in which perceptual disturbances occur, including autism and schizophrenia, are associated with cerebellar pathology. A better understanding of the involvement of the cerebellum in perceptual processes will thus likely be important for identifying and treating perceptual deficits that may at present go unnoticed and untreated. This paper provides a useful framework for further debate and empirical investigations into the influence of the cerebellum on sensory perception.

Abstract

We developed a mathematical analysis method of reflectometry data and used it to characterize the internal structure of TiO 2/SiO 2/Si and Ti/SiO 2/Si stacks. Atomic concentration profiles of all the chemical elements composing the samples were reconstructed from the analysis of the reflectivity curves measured versus the incidence angle at different soft x-ray reflection (SXR) photon energies. The results were confirmed by the conventional techniques of hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HXPES) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The depth variation of the chemical composition, thicknesses and densities of individual layers extracted from SXR and HXPES measurements are in close agreement and correlate well with the HRTEM images.
