Abstract

In this work, we investigate the magnetic structures of $(Fe_{1-x}Mn_x)_2AlB_2$ solid-solution quaternaries in the $x = 0$ to $1$ range using x-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetization measurements, and mean-field theory calculations. While $Fe_2AlB_2$ and $Mn_2AlB_2$ are known to be ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM), respectively, herein we focused on the magnetic structure of their solid solutions, which is not well understood. The FM ground state of $Fe_2AlB_2$ becomes a canted AFM at $x \approx 0.2$, with a monotonically diminishing FM component until $x \approx 0.5$. The FM transition temperature ($T_C$) decreases linearly with increasing $x$. These changes in magnetic moments and structures are reflected in anomalous expansions of the lattice parameters, indicating a magnetoelastic coupling. Lastly, the magnetocaloric properties of the solid solutions were explored. For $x = 0.2$ the isothermal entropy change is smaller by 30% than it is for $Fe_2AlB_2$, while the relative cooling power is larger by 6%, due to broadening of the temperature range of the transition., Comment: Final version as published in physical review materials

Abstract

Herein we report on the reactivity between palladium, Pd, and the MAX phases, Ti${_2}$AlC, Ti${_3}$AlC${_2}$, Ti${_3}$SiC${_2}$ and Cr${_2}$AlC. Diffusion couples of Pd/MAX were heated to 900 {\deg}C under uniaxial stress of ~20 MPa for 2, 4, and 10 h in a vacuum (<1 Pa) hot press. The diffusion couples were examined using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. After heating to 900 {\deg}C for 10 h, the diffusion layer thicknesses in the Ti${_2}$AlC/Pd, Cr${_2}$AlC/Pd, Ti${_3}$AlC${_2}$/Pd and Ti${_3}$SiC${_2}$/Pd couples were found to be 35, 45, 105 and 410 mm, respectively. Thus, Ti${_2}$AlC is the most resistant to reaction, while Ti${_3}$SiC${_2}$ is least resistant, with Cr${_2}$AlC and Ti${_3}$AlC${_2}$, in between. In all cases, the reaction occurred by the diffusion of the A-group element into Pd, concomitant with Pd diffusion into the MAX phase. Abstract

We report on a study of laser plasma instabilities with 527 nm laser pulses in an intensity range of 0.5 × 10 13 − 1.1 × 10 15 W cm − 2 and plasma parameters entering a regime that is relevant for direct drive inertial confinement fusion. Using the kilojoule high repetition rate L4n laser at the Extreme Light Infrastructure—Beamlines, more than 1300 shots were collected, and the onset and the growth of stimulated Brioullin scattering (SBS) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) were studied with a high confidence level. The measured onset intensities are 0.2 × 10 14 W cm − 2 for SBS and 1.4 × 10 14 W cm − 2 for SRS. At the maximum intensity, the total fraction of backscattered energy reaches 2.5% for SBS and 0.1% for SRS. These results are of high relevance for advanced concepts for inertial fusion energy, which rely on the use of 527 nm laser light to drive the implosion of the fuel target, and in particular, they can be used as a benchmark for advanced simulations. Abstract

We report on the commissioning of a full aperture backscatter diagnostics station for the kilojoule, nanosecond high repetition rate L4n laser operating at a wavelength of 527 nm at the Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) - Beamlines, Dolni Brezany, Czech Republic. Light scattered back from laser–plasma interaction into the cone of the final focusing lens is captured and split into different channels to measure the signatures of laser plasma instabilities from stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering, and two plasmon decay with respect to back scattered energy, its spectrum, and its temporal profile. The performance was confirmed in a commissioning experiment with more than 800 shots at laser intensities ranging from 0.5 × 1013 to 1.1 × 1015 W cm−2. These diagnostics are permanently installed at ELI Beamlines, and can be used to understand the details of laser–plasma interactions in experiments with kJ and 527 nm light. The large number of shots that can be collected in an experimental campaign will allow us to study the details of the laser–plasma interaction with a high level of confidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
