Abstract

This article explores a semi-analytical method for the Thermo-Magneto-Elastic-Plastic analysis of functionally magnetoelastic (FM) thick cylinders. The FM cylinder is subjected to a uniform magnetic field and combined pressure and temperature loads. Material properties vary radially according to a power-law distribution. The elastic and elastic-plastic distribution of stresses and radial displacement through the radius are obtained. Also, Tresca's yield criterion is used to describe material behavior in plastic zone. The effects of the grading index (β), pressure, temperature, and magnetic intensity vector are discussed. The results indicate that increasing the value of β, internal pressure, external temperature, and magnetic intensity vector lead to the expansion of the yield point from the inner to the outer surface. Abstract

The effects of stress relief on the magnetic characteristics of Fe-based metallic glass (MG) ribbons are investigated under external stress through various annealing treatments. We found that long-time annealing treatments benefit for making softer magnetic MGs under applied bending stress. We show that the irreversible domain wall movement region and the irreversible domain wall rotation region in the M-H curve represent the stress relief, which can be well reflected by the demagnified magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic coercivity and effective permeability variations in the lower frequency regime also represent the stress relief state. These observations have implications for understanding the relationship between the stress relief, microstructure change, and magnetic softness in magnetic MGs and might be helpful for the performance improvement of the ferromagnetic glassy materials. Abstract

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of information regarding the provision of parental leave for surgical careers. This survey study aims to evaluate the experience of maternity/paternity leave and views on work-life balance globally.METHODS: A 55-item online survey in 24 languages was distributed via social media as per CHERRIES guideline from February to March 2020. It explored parental leave entitlements, attitude towards leave taking, financial impact, time spent with children and compatibility of parenthood with surgical career.RESULTS: Of the 1393 (male : female, 514 : 829) respondents from 65 countries, there were 479 medical students, 349 surgical trainees and 513 consultants. Consultants had less than the recommended duration of maternity leave (43.8 versus 29.1 per cent), no paid maternity (8.3 versus 3.2 per cent) or paternity leave (19.3 versus 11.0 per cent) compared with trainees. Females were less likely to have children than males (36.8 versus 45.6 per cent, P = 0.010) and were more often told surgery is incompatible with parenthood (80.2 versus 59.5 per cent, P < 0.001). Males spent less than 20 per cent of their salary on childcare and fewer than 30 hours/week with their children. More than half (59.2 per cent) of medical students did not believe a surgical career allowed work-life balance.CONCLUSION: Surgeons across the globe had inadequate parental leave. Significant gender disparity was seen in multiple aspects.

Abstract

In most of the investigations, the active noise barriers are configured placing both secondary sources and error sensors close to the edge of barriers, but it is unclear how far is this approach from the maximum theoretical performance of the active noise barrier. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of the active noise barrier when error sensors are on the top edge of the barrier with the maximum attainable reduction at a target zone and then two positions proposed for locating the error sensors which improves the performance of active noise barrier. The maximum achievable reduction at the shadow zone computes when the control sources are 0.5 m far from the edge and along the line which connects the noise source to the edge. The control sources are adjusted to minimize the total squared pressure at receivers placed in the shadow zone. Then the minimization procedure is performed to minimize the squared pressure at the error sensors. The results show poor attenuations when the sound is canceled at the diffractive edge and the new configuration for the error sensors improves the performance of the control system.

Abstract

Amongst many important factors that affect the performance of active noise barrier, namely, the location of error microphones, and secondary sources, the intervals of adjacent error microphones and secondary sources, etc. this study focused on investigate the effect of secondary sources’ interval when they minimized the squared pressure at a set of 15 receivers located in the shadow zone of an infinite barrier. Three different positions around the top edge of barrier considered for secondary sources and best position which achieve the most reduction is selected. Also, the effect of ground reflections on the optimal secondary sources’ interval is investigated.

Abstract

A numerical study was performed to find the best position for error sensors and secondary sources of an active noise barrier. In this paper, a numerical study has been done, using MacDonald's solution, to calculate diffracted sound pressures of barrier's edges. In addition to the barrier's top edge diffraction, the vertical edges diffractions considered too, so this study is independent of barrier lenght. In order to consider the effect of ground, image theory is used. In order to have the maximum attenuation in shadow zone, one needs to know the best position for the error sensors and secondary sources as well as their numbers. This paper considered different positions for the error sensors and secondary sources and the best arrangement is determined in the results. In addition, according to the lenght of barrier, the optimum number of error sensors and secondary sources defined.

Abstract

Asmari Formation is one of the most prolific and important hydrocarbon reservoirs in Iran. This formation in the Cheshmeh-Khosh oilfield shows mixed carbonate-siliciclastic lithology and its elastic modulus changes are correlatable with facies changes. To address these changes, we investigated the relation between sedimentary environment (facies) and texture with various elastic moduli. The Young's modulus shows higher correlation with the facies changes. Data from three wells are analyzed and used for the construction of rock mechanical facies. Based on elastic properties, facies and texture changes as well as petrophysical characteristics seven rock mechanical facies (RMFs) are recognized in the studied formation. To predict RMFs at inter-well spaces more efficiently and capturing the lateral formation property variationsa 3D rock mechanical facies model is constructed based on seismic attributes. In this method, RMFs are correlatable between the studied wells and mappable by seismic attribute in the field scale. Finally, the distribution of RMFs and their related properties is investigated in the studied field.

46. Cerebral glucose metabolism is associated with verbal not visual performance in community-dwelling older adults

Abstract

Increasing evidence suggests that Alzheimer's disease (AD) sufferers show region-specific reductions in cerebral glucose metabolism, as measured by [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET). We investigated preclinical disease stage by cross-sectionally examining the association between global cognition, verbal and visual memory, and 18F-FDG PET standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) in 43 healthy control individuals, subsequently focusing on differences between subjective memory complainers and non-memory complainers. The 18F-FDG PET regions of interest investigated include the hippocampus, amygdala, posterior cingulate, superior parietal, entorhinal cortices, frontal cortex, temporal cortex, and inferior parietal region. In the cohort as a whole, verbal logical memory immediate recall was positively associated with 18F-FDG PET SUVR in both the left hippocampus and right amygdala. There were no associations observed between global cognition, delayed recall in logical memory, or visual reproduction and 18F-FDG PET SUVR. Following stratification of the cohort into subjective memory complainers and non-complainers, verbal logical memory immediate recall was positively associated with 18F-FDG PET SUVR in the right amygdala in those with subjective memory complaints.There were no significant associations observed in non-memory complainers between 18F-FDG PET SUVR in regions of interest and cognitive performance. We observed subjective memory complaint-specific associations between 18F-FDG PET SUVR and immediate verbal memory performance in our cohort, however found no associations between delayed recall of verbal memory performance or visual memory performance. It is here argued that the neural mechanisms underlying verbal and visual memory performance may in fact differ in their pathways, and the characteristic reduction of 18F-FDG PET SUVR observed in this and previous studies likely reflects the pathophysiological changes in specific brai
