A new species of the genus Farranula Wilson, 1942 (Cyclopoida, Corycaeidae) is described based on both sexes collected off Chuuk Island in Micronesia (West Central Pacific). The new species F. dahlae differs from its close congener F. gibbula (Giesbrecht, 1891) in the following combination of characters in both sexes: body length is longer, length to width ratio of caudal rami is larger, basal element of maxilliped is distinctly longer, and terminal spine to distal segment ratio of P4 is smaller; while in females, lateral margins of fourth pedigerous somite are extended to mid-region of second urosomal somite, maximum width of the second urosomal somite is located at middle region in dorsal and lateral views, and length ratio of caudal seta III to seta V is much larger; and in males, sharply contracted portion of second somite is located at two-thirds distance from anterior margin. Some additional morphological details of F. gibbula are given and a key to species of the genus Farranula is provided.

The present study determined the microplastic distributions in the surface water of the Southern Sea of Korea (SS01–SS09) in September 2019, depending on three groups (Groups A, B, and C) categorized via the principal component analysis and cluster analysis using the water quality parameters (water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended particulate matter, and chlorophyll-a). The microplastic samples in the surface water were collected using a 300 μm-mesh neuston net. The microplastic abundance ranged from 0.10 to 5.08 (average 0.71 ± 1.64) particles/m3 in the entire sampling area. Median values in Groups A (SS01, SS02, and SS07), B (SS05, SS08, and SS09), and C (SS03, SS04, and SS06) were 0.14 ± 0.02, 0.12 ± 0.14, and 0.17 ± 2.85 particles/m3, respectively, and there were no statistically significant differences (p < 0.050). However, it was highlighted that the most considerably numerous microplastic abundance in SS04 (5.08 particles/m3) revealed relatively high water temperatures distinguished from other sampling areas. Polystyrene, consisting mainly of expanded polystyrene, was the predominant polymer type, accounting for 81.5% in Groups A, 84.4% in B, and 97.0% in C. The particle size in Group C (average 3.11 ± 1.08 mm) was statistically larger (p < 0.001) than those of Groups A (average 0.71 ± 1.06 mm) and B (average 0.98 ± 1.22 mm). Only fragment and sheet shapes were found in all the sampling points and the former, which consisted of the secondary microplastics regardless of the groups, was the dominant type. The fragment composition gradually increased from 77.3% in Group A, 96.7% in B, to 99.1% in C. However, the strategy studies should be investigated in the foreseeable future to supplement the current study limitations, such as verifying the effect of the Yangtze River and the Tsushima warm current, and seasonal fluctuation. This study assessed the taxonomic statuses of three lesser-known Magelona F. Müller, 1858 species collected from intertidal to sublittoral habitats in Korean coastal waters, basing identification on morphological features and comparing them with their closest congeners. We present a comprehensive description and illustration of taxonomically significant and standardized characters, covering all thoracic chaetigers of three newly discovered Magelona species from Korea. Within the documented Korean Magelona species, these three species exhibit the following distinctive characteristics. Magelona sachalinensis Buzhinskaja, 1985, possess diminutive superior dorsal lobes in the initial four chaetigers and specialized chaetae on chaetiger 9; Magelona lenticulata Gallardo, 1968, is characterized by foliaceous postchaetal superior dorsal lobes in chaetigers 1–8; and Magelona cf. longicornis Johnson, 1901, is distinguished by notably elongated noto- and neuropodial postchaetal lamellae on chaetiger 9. Methyl green staining patterns showed species-specific characteristics and were confirmed to be effective in distinguishing the examined Korean species from each other and useful for making comparisons with previously reported Magelona species. Our study suggests that further comprehensive research on the morphological and genetic characteristics of Magelona species will enhance our understanding of their diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated microplastic distribution characteristics by collecting surface seawater from sea areas to the south of Jeju Island in August 2020. The average microplastic abundance was 0.46 ± 0.27 particles/L (n = 23), and PE had a high ratio, averaging 53%. The levels of fragments and fibers were observed to be 69% and 31% on average, respectively. The most common size of the microplastics was on average 0.02–0.30 mm at a level of 69%. We found a higher abundance of microplastics in the study area than in other open waters such as the Arctic Central Basin and the Atlantic Ocean, whereas the abundance was lower than that in previous studies on coastal areas. We studied an area of open sea connecting China, Japan, and the Pacific Ocean, and, in this region, the microplastic distribution varies depending on sea currents in the surrounding areas. In the summer, the western and central regions of the study sea area have low salinity levels due to discharge from China's Yangtze River. This generally indicates that high-density plastic deposits are found in the Yangtze River estuary, and low-density plastics are found in the study area. Furthermore, this implies that low- and high-density plastics are transported in water for long periods of time due to the Taiwan Warm Current and because the eastern sea area has high salinity.
