Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease-related death worldwide. Some studies suggested that the natural ingredients in coffee may negatively affect cardiovascular diseases, while other studies indicated that coffee contains anti-inflammatory compounds that are beneficial for cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to measure the expression of P-selectin in aortic endothelial cells and the level of serum apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1) in an atherosclerosis rat model after the administration of arabica and robusta coffee bean extracts at mild-moderate and high doses. An experimental study was conducted with a complete randomized design using 36 adult male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into six groups: negative control (NC), positive control (PC), arabica mild-moderate dose (A1), arabica high dose (A2), robusta mild-moderate dose (R1), and robusta high dose (R2). Animals were induced atherosclerosis with atherogenic feed and then were treated with arabica and robusta coffee bean extracts at two different doses for four weeks. The results showed that the expression of P-selectin in the group of rats treated with robusta coffee bean extract was lower than arabica coffee bean extract group. Rats with robusta coffee bean extract mild-moderate dose had the highest ApoA-1 levels compared to other groups significantly (p<0.05). The level of ApoA-1 was higher in both mild-moderate and high dose of robusta coffee groups compared to the negative control group (both with p<0.001). In conclusion, mild-moderate intake of robusta coffee bean extract could reduce aortic P-selectin immunoexpression and increase serum ApoA-1 levels in an atherosclerosis rat model.

Abstract

Increasing the quantity of Aceh beef must be accompanied by an increase in quality. Collagen connective tissue is one of the factors that affect meat tenderness. Evaluation of collagen connective tissue in Indonesian local beef cattle muscles has not been widely reported, including Aceh cattle. The aim in this study is to analyze the characteristics of the collagen connective tissue in the longissimus dorsi (LD) and the semitendinosus muscle (ST). The study used the LL and ST muscles of three adult Aceh bull that were taken from abattoirs. Samples were fixed and processed into histological preparations and stained with picrosirius red staining. The result showed that meat derived from the ST meat contained more collagen connective tissue than the longissimus dorsi muscle. Collagen connective tissue is distributed in the endomysium and perimysium layers of both muscles. The conclusion is that the longgissimus dorsi muscle has less collagen connective tissue content than the semitendinosus muscle, which is more highly distributed in the perimysial layer of both muscles. The research is expected to be able to promote and support Aceh cattle as the main livestock of customer choice for breeding and consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Tanjong Selamat is one of the villages directly adjacent to Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh. Its strategic location makes Tanjong Selamat Village a priority to be developed into an assisted village of Universitas Syiah Kuala. The main occupations of local Tanjong Selamat villagers are farmers and breeders. Efforts to increase the community income can be done through the cultivation of laying ducks and post-harvest management in the form of making salted eggs. This community service activity was carried out in the form of extension, demonstration, and training. The activity materials are knowledge about the prospects for laying ducks cultivation, prevention and treatment of diseases that often attack ducks, good cage systems, management of breeding, and the making of salted eggs. The cage system and breeding management were carried out by making a pilot cage consisting of the main cage of 15 m2 and a breeding area of50 m2. The cage was filled with 50 domestic ducks (peking ducks and tegal ducks) aged 4 months. During the community service activity, the participants were very enthusiastic and able to implement the technology package that had been given. Based on the activity that has been conducted, the villagers of Tanjong Selamat Village, especially the members of the livestock group, can understand well the extension material and have high enthusiasm in improving the management of laying ducks as observed during the demonstration of the cage plot as well as better understand the making of salted eggs that are in accordance with consumer desires and have a long shelf life.
