This research shows a case study of the Black-Box testing for Temperature Controller (TC) which is one of the typical embedded systems. A test automation tool, TEST, was developed and some kinds of TCs were tested using the tool. We presented statistical analysis for the test results of the automated testing and defined the properties of the software bugs for the embedded system. The main result of the study were the following: (a) test case prioritization technique was needed because the review phase, in the test process, takes long time; (b) there are three types of software defects for the embedded software; (c) the complexity of the system configuration have an effect on the software defect; (d) the software defect was distributed in vulnerable points of the software; and (e) testing activities reduce the number of the software defects. The result can be useful in the asymptotic study of test case prioritization. The European Southern Observatory (ESO) very large telescope interferometer (VLTI) got first fringes on March 17, 2001 at Mount Paranal in Chile. The VINCI instrument has played a key role in the achievement of this important milestone and is a fundamental component for the current VLTI operations. This paper, after a brief introduction of the VLTI and the instrument itself, will focus mainly on control software aspects. It describes the VINCI hardware and software architecture in the context of the whole VLT control concept. Particular emphasis is given to real-time control aspects, data acquisition, distribution of control over several hardware platforms, networks, standardization of hardware and software components, and software configuration control management. A method is described for creating a secure hierarchical group environment in Unix[R] where faculty have free access to student files but in which students have no access either to faculty files or other students' files. The environment is employed to implement a semiautomatic testing system for student software. Testing is used both for grading and for hands-on help for students. The tests generate a permanent, time-stamped record of the results. Samples are provided of a typical programming assignment, a testing script in Peri, and samples of the record for compliant and noncompliant programs.
