U ovom radu pokušavam naznačiti određene elemente Sokratove filozofije kojima bi se odgojna praksa trebala voditi, kao i neke štetne implikacije sofističkog pristupa odgoju. Pri analizi Sokratove pozicije osobito se oslanjam na Vlastosove interpretacije, a posebice se osvrćem na Sokratovu tezu da se vrlina ne može poučavati. Pored ostaloga, ona upućuje na nedoktrinarni pristup moralno-odgojnoj praksi, kakav ne može proizaći iz suprotnih Protagorinih uvjerenja. Partikularno i utilitarno usmjeren odgoj kod sofista danas se osobito javlja u odgojnom (ili bolje: manipulatorskom) prijenosu nacionalnih, poslovnih i sličnih tobožnjih etika, nemoćnih po pitanju prepoznavanja i prevladavanja postojećih društveno-ekonomskih okvira, a za što Sokratova moralno-odgojna filozofija sadrži kritičku snagu koja prvenstveno proizlazi iz implicitnog naglaska na autonomiji., In this paper I try to indicate particular elements of Socrates’ philosophy by which educational practice should be guided, as well as certain harmful implications of Sophistic approach to education. In analysis of Socrates’ position, I especially rely on Vlastos’ interpretations, and particularly I refer to Socrates’ thesis that virtue cannot be taught. Among other things, it suggests a non-doctrinal approach to moral-educational practice, which cannot result from Protagoras’ opposite beliefs. Nowadays Sophistic particular- and utilitarian-oriented education occurs especially in the educational (or better: manipulative) transmission of national, business and similar so-called ethics, which are not able for recognizing and overcoming of the existing socio-economic framework, and for which Socrates’ moral-educational philosophy contains critical force, arising primarily out of the emphasis on autonomy.

U radu se ispituje razlika između filozofije i sofistike. Preciznije, raspravlja se o onome što razlikuje Sokrata od sofista svoga vremena te o onome što razlikuje Epikteta od sofista uopće. More precisely, it discusses the differences between Socrates and Sophists of the first generation, as well as the differences between Epictetus and Sophists of both first and second generation. While Sophists were the first professional teachers and Epictetus one of the greatest Stoic teachers of all times, Socrates, according to Plato, denied being a teacher by any means, despite many who thought otherwise. Sophists were known for their speeches that most attracted those with a wish to be successful politicians. Socrates and Epictetus were also excellent orators surrounded by Athenian and Roman politicians. However, that didn’t make them Sophists. Socrates and Epictetus opted for a life in accordance with excellence (virtue) that could be achieved by philosophy rather than rhetoric. Rhetoric could only have instrumental value, not an intrinsic one.

U identificiranju nastanka moralno-etičkog fenomena, autor polazi od uvjerenja da je on povijesnog, a ne »vječnog« karaktera. Rudimentarni oblik autor nalazi u proto-moralnoj svijesti i proto-etičkom filozofskom stajalištu sofista. U tome se obratu rađa moralno-etički fenomen kao učinak sofističkog konfrontiranja razumskog (razložnog) mišljenja tradicijskoj predodžbenoj svijesti., In order to identify genesis of moral-ethical phenomenon, author starts from certainty of its historical, and not “eternal”, character. Its rudimental form is found in proto-moral consciousness and proto-ethical philosophical standpoint of the Sophists. Resting upon Aristotle and Hegel, author reconstructs Hellenic system of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) and shows the meaning of historical turn the Sophists made within that system by their own philosophical and cultural mission. Within this turn, moral-ethical phenomenon was born as a product of sophistic confrontation of principle of reason (reasoning) with traditional representational consciousness.

Cilj ovog rada jest dati pregled osnovnih načela sofističkog podučavanja retorike u 5. stoljeću prije Krista i usporediti ih sa suvremenim postulatima retoričke poduke. Tijekom povijesti sofisti su vrlo često bili kritizirani i smatraju se odgovorima za negativne konotacije koje retorika ponekad i danas nosi. No, velik dio njihovih načela primjenjuje se i danas u suvremenom podučavanju retorike, argumentacije i javnoga govora.

Jedna je od glavnih rasprava vezanih uz temu »povijesnog svijeta« ona o odnosu pojmova physis i nomos. Historijski izvori ove rasprave mogu se pratiti sve do 5. i 4. stoljeća pr. Kr. Tijekom ovog razdoblja mnogi su filozofi, povjesničari i autori iznosili različite ideje o ovoj temi. Neki od njih su smatrali da je physis superioran nomosu dok je za druge nomos bio superioran physisu. Glavni je problem u ovoj raspravi sklonost stabiliziranju napetosti između ovih dviju sfera povlačenjem jasnih granica među njima. U tom smislu trebamo postaviti dva važna filozofska pitanja. The historical roots of this debate can be traced back to the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. many philosophers, historians, and authors revealed different ideas about this subject. Some of them considered physis to be superior to nomos, while others considered nomos to be superior to physis. The main problem that arises in this discussion is the inclination to stabilize the tension between these two concepts by drawing thick boundaries between them. In this respect, we need to ask two significant philosophical questions. Firstly, is it possible to say that physis and nomos have definite conceptual schemes? The second question is connected to the first one and it deals with whether the tension between physis and nomos can be handled in a fixed manner or not. This paper discusses these questions from the perspectives of the Sophists and contemporary thinkers involved in the physis–nomos debate. It will be based on the idea of how human beings think while constituting the world, and it will evaluate how physis and nomos ought to be related., Le débat physis–nomos a été l’une des discussions principales ayant trait au thème du « monde humain fabriqué ». Članak promišlja Protagorin utjecaj na sofističku retoriku i to u dva smisla ; prije svega izvornom, analizirajući odnos Protagorinih misli, posebice onih koje su imale utjecaj na sofistiku, a zatim se te iste misli promišljaju i u suvremenom kontekstu.
