Anachronistic Aspasian specters condense themselves into the uncertain figure of the Ionian foreigner who enchanted and conducted, particularly and, above all, politically, the foremost Athenian citizen, by far the most influential statesman of his time. Who truly was Aspasia of Miletus? Is it possible to craft an image of this mistress of persuasion that is not reduced to the rigid label of Pericles' concubine? Is it possible to escape this side role established by the classic Aspasian doxography? This article presents Aspasia as a sophist by retrieving the memory of her foreigner persuasive strength, the memory of her untamable oratory power and her seductive intellectual acumen. A woman who excelled in producing funeral orations, giving marriage advices and other matters of the, besides discussing relevant political issues in the most famous intellectual circle at the time. Aspasia dared to be a teacher and even to educate other women. Sometimes also serving as a matchmaker for those she educated. The educational space promoted by Aspasia, which likely privileged teaching the oratory and erotic arts, is remembered in a completely heterodox manner. The memory of the place as a polemic brothel gets confused and mixed with that which recalls it as a place of political-philosophical discussions. With the intention of reshaping Aspasia's legacy, highlighting the revolutionary presence of this woman who has creatively infiltrated herself into the history of oratory and claimed her place as a freethinker, I revisit various female images of the antiquity that were associated to the Aspasian political power. Placing Aspasia of Miletus among Omphale, Hera and Helena, among Rodogine, Telesilla, Tomyris and Thargelia. All of them, political lionesses. Whether mythical or real, Greek or foreigners. They have influenced directly and indirectly to the political, oratory, artistic and philosophical history of what is conventionally understood as the ancient world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tradução anotada do tratado anônimo sofístico datado do começo do séc. IV a.C., Dissoi Logoi, ou “Discursos Duplos”. A apresentação do texto traz informações básicas sobre transmissão do texto, autoria, datação e uma pequena discussão sobre a caracterização das teses nele presentes. As notas da tradução analisam passagens e conceitos importantes, sugerem questões e inter-relações com outras obras, buscando traçar um panorama possível de interpretação do texto. O tratado, incompleto, compõe-se de nove pequenos capítulos que versam sobre temas importantes durante o período de atuação do movimento sofista e pode ser considerado um exemplar das técnicas retóricas ensinadas por esses pensadores.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo ampliar o entendimento e o alcance das teses filosóficas e educacionais de John Dewey, as situando no interior da tradição discursiva retórica derivada da Sofística. Para isso, faz-se primeiramente o exame quantitativo das ocorrências da expressão “history of philosophy”, passando em seguida à análise qualitativa do tema “história da filosofia” nas obras publicadas em The collected works of John Dewey: 1882-1953 (Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, EUA). Esse exame revela duas características que permitem associar Dewey à tradição retórica: o valor educativo atribuído ao estudo da história e uma forma de argumentar baseada na genealogia de fatos e conceitos. Tendo por base as teses de Dewey sobre estética e sua conceituação de experiência, o artigo é finalizado com a proposta de uma história criativa da filosofia e da educação.

Casi de manera simultánea, en los comienzos del llamado post-estructuralismo los filósofos franceses Michel Foucault y Jean-François Lyotard se interesaron por la sofística. El primero mantuvo la clásica confrontación entre el pensamiento filosófico y el sofístico con vistas a afianzar su propio planteamiento sobre la cuestión de la “verdad”, mientras que el segundo autor intentó derribar las fronteras entre ambos saberes. Lo que estaba en juego en estas dos lecturas enfrentadas era una reflexión sobre los medios de que dispone la filosofía para intervenir en el ámbito político. Para Foucault, es el decirle la verdad al político “parresiásticamente” lo que caracteriza al filósofo frente al taimado sofista y garantiza una influencia en un gobierno de la polis recto. En cambio Lyotard, a partir de su idea de la política “pagana”, creía necesario operar un giro sofístico sobre la filosofía para que ésta, desde una posición no exterior a la política, pueda suscitar transformaciones de otro modo imposibles. Este artículo analiza las lecturas que de la sofística ofrecieron los dos pensadores franceses, mostrando su originalidad y relevancia para el panorama filosófico contemporáneo.

This paper analyzes the metaphor as a discursive strategy to explain and disseminate the concepts that support doctrines in general and educational doctrines in particular. It examines the Cultivation metaphor as a fundamental metaphor for education, as well as its supposed origin in Sophistry, and proposes to replace it with the Navigation metaphor. This substitution makes it possible to assign new meanings both to the practice of the sophists and to the profession of educating today and throughout history, imposing challenges on the training and continuing education of teachers.

Este artigo analisa a metáfora como estratégia discursiva destinada a explicar e a difundir os conceitos que sustentam as doutrinas em geral e as doutrinas educacionais em particular. Examina a metáfora cultivo como metáfora fundamental da educação, bem como a sua suposta origem na Sofística, e propõe substituí-la pela metáfora navegação. Esta substituição permite atribuir novos significados tanto à prática dos sofistas quanto ao ofício de educar no decorrer da história e na atualidade, impondo desafios à formação inicial e continuada de professores.

el objetivo del presente artículo es doble; por un lado, se cuestionan las concepciones sobre la historia de la filosofía que insisten en partir por Platón, y, por otro, se enfoca en el movimiento filosófico conocido en la Grecia antigua como sofística, con el fin de reconocer y reflexionar sobre los aportes de este movimiento para el desarrollo posterior del pensamiento filosófico y científico occidental. En tal sentido, se explica el contexto de su origen y desarrollo en la Grecia antigua, la importancia de sus enseñanzas —en especial la retórica y el estudio del lenguaje— para la reflexión posterior en educación, política, derecho, psicología y antropología modernas, su redefinición de la moral centrada en una naturaleza humana constitutiva de sí misma, así como las críticas de que fueron objeto —principalmente por parte de Platón— y que en parte construyeron y consolidaron la imagen peyorativa que, durante siglos, acompañó su nombre. ¿En qué se fundamentaban estas críticas? ¿Eran fundadas estas críticas?

El artículo analiza la producción sofística a partir del caso singular de Antifonte, en virtud del problema de su identidad. Se acepta que el orador y el sofista son la misma persona, lo cual altera la configuración del corpus que se les atribuye. Esto permite analizar conjuntamente las Tetralogías del orador y el Sobre la verdad del sofista. Siguiendo estos textos se aborda su pensamiento centrado en dos núcleos fundamentales: el lógos y el nómos, con los que la sofística elabora un pensamiento sobre la organización de la pólis. Las posiciones de Antifonte son cotejadas con las de Protágoras y Gorgias, para indicar sus puntos de vista en común.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo refletir sobre os fundamentos teóricos que balizam os argumentos apresentados por Pausânias em seu célebre discurso no Banquete. Demonstrar-se-á a forte influência sofística que carrega tal encômio, devendo, por isso, ser entendido como uma forte crítica platônica ao modelo paidédito proposto por esse grupo de pensadores. Concluir-se-á ainda, evidenciando, que assim como os demais discursos, o elogio de Pausânias a Eros constitui-se, na verdade, um louvor a si mesmo, pretendendo-se conceber como amante/amado ideal.

Neste artigo comentarei a caracterização que Aristóteles faz do princípio de não-contradição, a impossibilidade de demonstrá-lo ontologicamente e a demonstração indireta do mesmo princípio, pondo em diálogo as interpretações de alguns dos mais importantes comentadores de Aristóteles.

The present research aims to analyse the method of discourse employed by Gorgias in his work entitled "The Defense of Palamedes" through an analytical philosophical appreciation of the text, based on the legal model adopted in Greece in the 5th century BC The research has as specific objectives to investigate the Gorgian method of defense in the Defense of Palamedes, to identify, in the same work, the rhetorical elements of persuasion employed by Gorgias, to understand the legal principles used by Gorgias in the work in question and to estimate which would be the real intention of Gorgias with the presentation of the Defense of Palamedes. We will deal in detail with two basic points pointed out in Palamedes' speech, which would be the absence of evidence and the verisimilitude of the allegations. An approach to these points will also be made in the light of the rhetorical manual proposed by Aristotle. The theme is relevant to the understanding of the development of philosophical reflections on legal processes and the means to effect persuasion. The understanding of these questions from ancient thinkers will shed light on the current discussions on these themes, enabling us to understand important aspects of this development as well as the transmission of these reflections over time. Resumo O ponto de partida deste artigo é uma polêmica que envolve o filósofo e educador John Dewey (1859-1952) desde século passado: tanto autores contrários quanto autores favoráveis às suas teses consideram as suas concepções educacionais associadas ao ceticismo, corrente filosófica criada por Pirro de Élis (360-270 a.C.). Essa polêmica é investigada neste artigo por meio da análise retórica proposta por Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca, comparando o discurso de Dewey com as formulações pirrônicas. Dessa investigação resulta a descoberta de algumas semelhanças e uma importante diferença entre os discursos examinados. Essa diferença, por sua vez, conduz ao exame de uma corrente filosófica anterior ao pirronismo, a sofística, cujo principal representante é Protágoras de Abdera (490-421 a.C.). A sofística é analisada neste trabalho segundo autores contemporâneos que divergem da caracterização tradicional instituída por Platão. As conclusões identificam importantes coincidências entre o discurso deweyano e o discurso sofístico, o que permite associar Dewey à tradição discursiva retórica e posicionar as suas propostas educacionais no âmbito da pedagogia retórica. Essa pedagogia propõe levar os estudantes a compor e expressar as suas inclinações pessoais, não no estreito espaço da vida individual, mas no horizonte mais amplo da coletividade, por meio de métodos que visam projetar o aluno no espaço público da deliberação e da ação.

The foundation of political philosophy, which means, according to Arendt, the attempt of producing an escape from politics altogether, can be understood as a moment of what Foucault called the history of Western’s will to knowledge. According to this hypothesis, we examine Arendt’s analysis of the transformation from action to rulership in Plato and Foucault’s reading of the exclusion of sophism by Aristotle. We show the differences between the archaeology of a pre-political philosophy world that Arendt reconstructs, based on an ambiguous restitution of Socrates, and the strategic theory of discourse which Foucault discovers in sophistic. We finally examine the political consequences of this difference, specially concerning a reconsideration of the traditional relations between thinking and acting.

O trabalho visa discutir as relações entre o discurso educacional de Agostinho de Hipona e as concepções de pensadores posteriores a ele, examinando as obras O mestre, publicada poucos depois de sua conversão ao catolicismo, e A instrução dos catecúmenos, quando ele já havia se tornado bispo. A análise segue os referenciais da sofística, que dão fundamento a uma proposição pedagógica cujo máximo expoente contemporâneo é John Dewey. A conclusão identifica nas fontes examinadas a ausência de um referencial da sofística, a forma discursiva chamada antilógica, o que sugere continuar a investigação por meio da análise de outras obras do filósofo. ABSTRACT: The work aims to discuss the relations between the educational discourse of Augustine of Hippo and the conceptions of thinkers after him, examining the works The master, published shortly after his conversion to Catholicism, and The instruction of the catechumens, when he had already became bishop. The analysis follows the frames of the sophistry, which base a pedagogic proposition whose capital contemporary exponent is John Dewey. The conclusion identifies in the sources examined the absence of a referential of the sophistry, the discursive form called antilogic, which suggests to continue the investigation through the analysis of other works of the philosopher. Several scholars have suggested that Isocrates' speeches Against the Sophists and Encomium of Helen attack some of Socrates' followers, mainly Plato, Antisthenes and Euclid. Nonetheless, most of these authors do not see the overall nature of Isocrates' criticism of the Socratics, which not only includes the figures mentioned above, but it is aimed at the group as a whole. This article seeks to defend that hypothesis. In order to do so, I will reconstruct, firstly, Isocrates' attack on the first group criticized in Against the Sophists and on the intellectuals from the prologue of Encomium of Helen. I will defend that both groups must be identified and that Isocrates attributes a set of shared doctrines and practices to all of them, among which he highlights an eristic methodology of argumentation and an intellectualist ethical position. Secondly, I will argue that these elements were practiced and defended by many of first-generation Socratics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Este artigo apresenta uma definição de Retórica a partir da obra de Górgias de Leontini, um dos mais importantes sofistas em atividade na Atenas do século V a.C. Além disso, busca demonstrar a influência de suas reflexões no pensamento de Friedrich Nietzsche para, em seguida, conectá-las à Análise Argumentativa do Discurso, tal como postulada por Ruth Amossy. Esse percurso teórico tem como objetivo resgatar uma concepção alternativa do processo argumentativo, não o reduzindo ao mapeamento exaustivo de técnicas conscientes ou tipos de argumento, como fazem algumas perspectivas herdeiras da vertente aristotélica e perelmaniana. Assim, tem-se como problema central a busca por uma definição de Retórica cada vez mais compatível com a abordagem de todo e qualquer mecanismo da estrutura da linguagem (modalizações, estruturas narrativas, ritmo etc.), o que ultrapassa a observação de tipologias de argumentos de caráter lógico ou quase-lógico. Como resultado teórico, mostra-se que a Retórica está ligada, primordialmente, à não transparência e à opacidade do discurso, o que implica em associá-la ao fato de a linguagem, em toda a sua estrutura material, não coincidir com o real. Para colocar em prática as reflexões teóricas desenvolvidas, o artigo faz uma sucinta análise de uma reportagem presente em uma revista brasileira (Revista Época), cujo tema é a atuação dos Black Blocs nas manifestações que tomaram as ruas do Brasil a partir de junho de 2013.

Texto de caráter ensaístico que discute as condições de possibilidades do filosofar num mundo – ou “cenário” – no qual se tem por certo e definitivo que “só há discursos”. Nesse sentido, incursiona pelas relações entre Filosofia e Música, bordejando as diferenças entre o filósofo e o sofista.

Este artigo possui o objetivo de construir uma reflexão sobre a inter-relação das provas retóricas - logos, ethos e pathos - no âmbito disciplinar da Análise do Discurso, dialogando com a tradição retórica, com a Sofística e com autores modernos que se ocupam do assunto, tais como Ruth Amossy, Michel Meyer, Christian Plantin e outros. Para tanto, parte-se do pressuposto de que, mais do que categorias estáveis e demarcáveis teoricamente, as provas retóricas são três dimensões ou "ângulos" de um mesmo discurso ou, em outros termos, três ferramentas ou "chaves de leitura" disponíveis à sua interpretação e à especulação de seus efeitos possíveis. Como são escassas análises discursivas aptas a ilustrar/demonstrar tais postulados teóricos, o artigo contém, além de uma primeira parte, destinada a uma reflexão teórica, uma segunda parte reservada exclusivamente à análise de um discurso de caráter político que circulou no Brasil no ano de 2010, num momento anterior às eleições presidenciais.

El siguiente artículo pretende llevar a cabo un análisis de la compleja relación entre Platón y los sofistas ubicada en el contexto de la Ilustración ateniense. El interés particular de la investigación gira en torno a la búsqueda de un discurso adecuado para la formación ciudadana y la construcción del espacio político. Para ello era necesario cierto tipo de aptitudes y valores que habrán de ser inculcados en la población por vía del logos. The next article is an approach to the long and complex relationship between Plato and the Sophists in the context of athenian Illustration. Our special interest on this topic deals with the search of an appropriate discourse for civic education and construction of the political ground. In order to define that space, Plato and the Sophists struggle with aptitudes and values that will be instilled on the citizens via the logos.

In this paper, we read Euripides’ Phoenissae as a metadramatic reflection which is developed through the opposition of two semantic fields: on the one hand, war and eris, political power, individual interest and public discourse associated to “sophistic” practices; on the other hand, peace and concord among members of the community; philia bonds, colective well-being and choral mousikē, which in turn are subject of self-referential passages. Through this opposition, we propose that the play poses a critique to the political and military situation faced by Athens between 411 and 409 b.C, and, at the same time, it develops a meta-dramatic reflection about the social function of tragic poetry, opposing it to the new kinds of discourses which, taught by the sophists, prevail in Athenian public sphere. The main subject of this article is the philosophical view often attributed to Antisthenes that it is impossible to contradict (ouk éstin antilégein) and to speak falsely (pseúdesthai) and it's link to the Sophist's nodal metaphysical problem, that of Not Being. The impossibility of contradiction is presented as the opposite position to sophistry as contradiction (antilogikós), thus defined in Sof., 232b ff., which is attributed to Protagoras, specifically to his statement that about any subject there are two opposite lógoi. We will argue that this position that is attributed to Parmenides in this dialogue belongs to Antisthenes, who was Socrates' disciple and Plato's theoretic rival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article has been originated from the presentation of my work at the Vo International Symposium Ousia. In this text I share reflections about a little-investigated split between Alcidamas and Isocrates, which took place at the heart of Gorgias Leontino's school. By one side of this disagreement has positioned itself Alcidamante, the heir disciple of Gorgias, in Athens, which was a champion of the technique of Gorgias of improvising speeches (autoschediastikê). And on the other side of the dispute, was placed Isocrates, the disciple of Gorgias who became leader of a school of philosophy where it prioritized the reading and writing practices in the transmission of knowledge. The text will be compared some of the positions of both thinkers, regarding the scope of the spoken word and writing, both as a means and end of training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the present work is to evidence the relevance of logos for two traditionally divergent activities: sophistic and philosophy. While the former considers logos as a domination and convincing power, philosophy conceives logos not only as the means, per excellence, to show the way things are, but to do show it in community with the interlocutor. Therefore, logos is dialogue by nature and philosophy a dialectic science.

En este trabajo sometemos a análisis crítico (desde el punto de vista de la lógica y del rechazo a la sofística) la conducta y discurso del maestro Platón en la obra destinada a perpetuar su gloriosa memoria: la “Apología de Sócrates”. Veremos que en su autodefensa Sócrates incurre en equívocos lógicos y usa diversos recursos de tipo sofístico (que bien hubieran podido servir a su principal acusador, Meleto). Así nuestra lectura humaniza al personaje y contribuye a hacer menos clara la neta línea divisoria que Platón intentó trazar entre su maestro y los sofistas (línea, que por cierto, no existía en la visión que de Sócrates nos pintó Aristófanes en “Las Nubes”).

Górgias de Leontinos, no Elogio de Helena, enfatiza o caráter sedutor das palavras em relação às almas humanas. A sedução das palavras, porém, não é senão um caso especial da sedução das coisas sensíveis e divinas sobre os homens, sedução que muitas vezes constrange e afoga o homem, que se vê imerso num mundo trágico onde os únicos objetos que ele pode contemplar com doçura e liberdade e sem o perigo de perder-se são as pinturas e as esculturas.
